Almost Like Being There PA Family Travel Fair Goes Virtual By Ann Mead Ash
When Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the third PA Family Travel Fair, realized that the 2020 fair, which was scheduled for April 18, would have to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, she was heartbroken for the more than 50 exhibitors. When she learned that all of them were committed to doing the 2021 event, she wanted to do something to help them. On April 21, Royal finalized plans to take the fair virtual starting during National Travel and Tourism Week, which was held from May 3. The virtual PA Family Travel Fair launched on May 4 and will continue through Saturday, May 30. The virtual fair can be accessed at www.whereand when.com/virtual-pa-family-travel-fair or by using the QR code found with this article. Where & When Pennsylvania may also be found by See PA Family Travel Fair pg 2
DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash and the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon will be among the many destinations highlighted during the virtual PA Family Travel Fair, which can be accessed using the QR code found with this article or by visiting www.whereandwhen.com/virtual-pa-family-travel-fair.
Reaching 1,400 Girls At Home By Ann Mead Ash
CWM
Under normal circumstances, Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a 10-week in-person program that couples physical activity with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development for girls in third through eighth grades. The GOTR curriculum is designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and
healthy living. However, since mid-March, the 1,400 girls in Lancaster and Lebanon counties who were to take part in GOTR this spring have not been living in normal circumstances. Since they are not attending school due to COVID-19 restrictions, they are not able to meet with their coaches and teams regularly after school. GOTR has responded to this situation with two new virtual lessons released each Tuesday as part of the GOTR At See GOTR pg 2
The Oles family of Manheim Township, including (from left) Luke, Mary Beth, Mary Kate, and Mark Oles, is taking part in the Girls on the Run At Home curriculum by completing weekly lessons that include discussions and exercises based on a specific theme.
Volunteers Make Masks For Seniors Milagros “Millie” Ortiz of Columbia recently led a project to aid senior citizens who may not have masks to wear during the COVID-19 pandemic and who may not be able to purchase masks. Millie, who attends the Miracle Center Church in Mount Joy, decided to create 140 masks to deliver to Trinity House Apartments in Columbia. Millie did not know how to sew and did not own a sewing machine or have the finances to purchase the materials needed. Friends and family partnered with her to help her reach her goal. Millie’s boyfriend purchased a used sewing machine for her, but the machine broke. She then borrowed another sewing machine from Heather
Lindsey of Creation Inspirationz. Millie’s sister, Jessica Ortiz, who attends Columbia Presbyterian Church, and her friend Ana Elliott of the See Masks pg 3
Milagros “Millie” Ortiz (center) made masks with assistance from her niece Alize Ortiz (left) and her friend Ana Elliott.

searching for “Where & When Pennsylvania” on Facebook or at @whereandwhenpa on Instagram. “Every day, we will feature a different exhibitor,” said Royal. “Each one of them will take over our social media for a day.” The first organization to take over Where & When’s social media was the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau, which is spotlighting a giveaway in conjunction with the fair consisting of a weekend kayaking getaway for four. “The package includes two nights lodging, a kayaking trip, and $200 toward meals,” said Royal, who noted that a basket of Endless Mountains products will be included. Visitors to the virtual travel fair may enter to win the package at the website. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing by Friday, June 5. Lining up to take over the Where & When social media are a mix of visitors’ bureaus, historic attractions, amusement parks, museums, and all-inclusive resorts. Among them are the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, Pennsylvania Great Outdoors, Pioneer Tunnel
Coal Mine, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash, and Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. Fort Roberdeau in Altoona will also have a day manning the social media accounts. Virtual tours of areas will be available on some days as well. “We have 18 different destination marketing organizations involved,” noted Royal. “Some of those will include virtual tour links for their areas.” Among the destination marketing areas that will be part of the virtual fair are the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau and The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau. One of the exciting aspects of the travel fair is that the exhibitors bring information about interesting and beautiful parts of Pennsylvania to those who attend. The virtual fair can accomplish that goal by putting the spotlight on special attractions in different areas of the state. “Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Sullivan counties are for people who really like to get away to open spaces,” noted Royal. “Worlds End State Park (in Sullivan County) is really pretty, and in Franklin County,
GOTR from pg 1 there are beautiful vistas.” Royal added that the town of New Castle in Lawrence County is considered the fireworks capital of America because it is the home of two fireworks enterprises that trace their origins to the mid-1800s. The county is also home to a craft burger trail. Royal said that through the virtual fair, she is encouraging involvement by the whole family, including the youngest members. “We will have children’s activity pages, and there’s a downloadable crossword puzzle and some coloring pages,” Royal pointed out. “I am encouraging parents of tweens and teens to involve those children in their travel plans (as well).”

Home curriculum. The first lesson, which was released the week of March 16, is called “We Are Unique; We Are Similar.” The lessons can be completed by a girl alone, but they are designed for all household members. “This is a family, at-home, shared experience,” said GOTR Lancaster program director Jennifer West. “We want to lift up the community and bring everyone together to share in the GOTR experience.” Each lesson includes a main concept called a big idea and an explanation of why that idea matters. Games and discussion questions based on ways to explore the theme are included, along with physical activities. “What we have are called Movement Mixes,” explained West, who said that suggestions might include skipping, running in place, or doing star jumps for a certain amount of time. “Not everybody can get outside (to exercise),” West explained. “(The lessons) are encouraging whatever activity you can do at home.” West said that the lessons are sent via email and text to all the families and coaches each week. “We encourage the coaches to reach out to the families and see how the girls are enjoying the lessons and keep them involved in whatever capacity they can,” said West, who noted that she realizes many of the coaches, who are often teachers or parents of the girls who take part, are still working at some level. “(We appreciate) whatever they can do,” said West. The annual GOTR spring 5K, which is normally held at Franklin & Marshall College in mid-May, will be a virtual event this year. “We are calling it the Virtual GOTR 5K Your Way presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster,” said West, who added that the 5K will be available to complete from Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31, and will include various options in addition to running and walking. “We have a bingo card sheet of activities,” explained West. “If (a participant) wants to run the 5K distance over those three days, they can, (but) if they can’t or don’t want to, they can do the different activities on the bingo sheet.” This year’s 5K will be free for those who sign up, but donations will be accepted. “We will email a 5K bib (to those who register) that can be printed out and colored and made their own to wear while doing the activities,” said West. Interested individuals may register at www.gotrlancaster .org/5k-detail. #GOTRGotYourBack is an effort that GOTR has undertaken to engage the broader community during this time. “It’s our social media piece, which is all about planting positive messages in the homes of anyone who follows us,” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “There are challenges (to complete) … and encouraging words. It’s all about bringing our mission to life.” Johnson noted that the organization feels it is especially important to spread a message of kindness. “Just as our 5K is like opening a bottle of sunshine, that’s what we want to be able to do during this time,” said Johnson.

Together, we can save lives. Are you in? Even as we make strides against COVID-19, it’s not time to let up. Following the proper guidelines remains critical — because that is still the most effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. • Stay home as much as you can • Practice social distancing — keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others • Wear a mask in public, covering your nose and mouth • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash hands often — for at least 20 seconds For a quicker return to the things you love, we need everyone to be in this together.
