This year, Kreutz Creek Library, 66 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam, is celebrating its 40th anniversary serving the residents of eastern York County and beyond. Since 1979, the library has served the community from a 1,200square-foot FEMA trailer. More than 40,000 visitors were welcomed through the small library’s doors in 2018. The library had originally considered constructing a new building to provide more space. However, in March, Hellam Township supervisors voted to construct a new township facility on their Walnut Street campus and to allow
the library to use their current municipal building. The library will grow more than seven times in size when it moves from its 1,200-square-foot FEMA trailer into the adjacent 8,800-square-foot Hellam Township building. Friends of See Kreutz Creek Library pg 9

Fire Company Plans Mountville Days Carnival By Dayna M. Reidenouer
they’re back this year, and it’ll be our biggest display ever,” said Mountville Fire Company deputy chief Andrew Kalbach. Folks who watch the fireworks, which will be set off on Friday, May 17, beginning around 8:30 p.m., will hopefully notice a difference. Duquin noted that the fire company hired a different group to handle the fireworks, and that business uses a computerdriven deployment system. Folks may bring chairs or blankets to sit and watch the
“We’re one of the few carnivals left in Lancaster County,” said Mountville Days committee chair Bryan Duquin Jr. In contrast to the other events that petered out, the Mountville Days carnival is growing and improving, he said, adding, “We have new vendors. We’re trying to bring in more local family-owned businesses.” “We had no fireworks last year, but

fireworks. Saturday, May 18, has been set as the rain date. The fireworks are just one aspect of Mountville Days, which is an annual event run by the Mountville Fire Company. It is held at Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville. This year’s event will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, May 15 and 16, from 6 to 9 p.m., as well as on May 17 and 18 from 5 to 11 p.m. There will be rides, concessions, vendors, face painting, a midway, games, and a disc jockey every day. On May 15 and 16, wristbands for unlimited rides will be available for purchase. During all four days, rides may be purchased a la carte. The food available at Mountville Days will be provided by local brick-and-mortar eateries as well as food trucks and caterers. The offerings will include hot dogs, burgers, chicken fingers, soft pretzels, fries, funnel cake, cotton candy, ice cream, and smoothies, as well as beverages. “It’s a fun time that families can have together and support the fire company and local businesses and organizations,” said fire company chaplain Jimmy Fannin. Parking will be available by donation.
Signs will direct drivers to the parking lot off Fridy Street. Handicapped-accessible parking will be located at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. The organizers are hoping for clear skies during Mountville Days. If it rains too much, the event will be canceled. Updates will be posted on the Mountville Fire Company No. 1 Facebook page. “We were set up to have a really good year (last year),” Kalbach recalled. He noted that unfortunately, rain put a kibosh on the fun. “It’s our only fundraiser. We run on donations, with contributions from Mountville borough and West Hempfield Township.” Mountville Fire Company’s first due is the borough of Mountville, approximately 25 percent of West Hempfield Township, and a small portion of East Hempfield Township. Every household in the first due should have received a postcard with coupons for discounted wristbands. Those who do not have a postcard may visit the “2019 Mountville Days Carnival” event page on Facebook or

with Prokofiev and Shostakovich. His works span many genres, including concertos, symphonies, ballets and music for film, which can still be regularly heard today. The “Waltz” from the “Masquerade Suite” was written in 1941 for a play with the same name created by Russian poet and playwright Mikhail Lermontov. Despite the play having a tragic theme, the waltz is particularly spirited. Peck was a composer from Detroit, Mich., who was heavily influenced by the soul music being played in the city in the 1950s. A musician from a very early age, Peck graduated from the University of Michigan with a doctorate in composition in 1972. He went on to be a professor at prestigious universities, including the Eastman School of Music. In his later years, he left teaching to pursue his passion - advocating for an end to world hunger. “The Glory and the Grandeur” is one of his most well-known pieces and is a work of Americana. Shostakovich was 19 when he began composing music. His career spanned a timeframe similar to the reign of Stalin, and artists of this era were severely punished, even executed, if their craft was perceived as going against the views and parameters set forth by the Communist Party. Shostakovich’s opera “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” received public criticism from Stalin, causing Shostakovich to fear his career, and even his life, would end. Shostakovich
pressed on with composing, and about a year after the Stalin criticism, he debuted a new work, his Symphony No. 5. Reflecting a much more conservative approach than his previous works, the symphony met with approval. A turning point in Shostakovich’s career, the premier of the Fifth Symphony reportedly had a standing ovation that lasted over 30 minutes. To purchase tickets to the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra concert, readers may call the box office at 717-291-4420 or visit www.lancastersymphony.org.

Khachaturian is considered one of the leading Soviet composers and the most well-known Armenian composer of the 20th century. He was born in 1903 to poor Armenian parents in present-day Georgia and grew up with little formal music training until age 18 when he enrolled in the Gnessin Musical Institute. He studied cello, composition and biology, and he was awarded many prestigious awards and privileges for his compositions, which predominantly exhibited folk Armenian flavors. Khachaturian was known as one of the “three titans of Soviet music,” along

however, right the ship and ended the year on a positive note, defeating York School of Technology 10-9 on May 10. The offensive side of the game has been the struggle all year for the Tide. They lost 10-0 and Emily Waugh was once again handed the ball as the starter. She ended the game with one punch out and three walks while unfortunately getting hit with the loss. The talented freshman has been the workhorse in the circle for the Tide as she has started over half their games while only picking up one win on the season. She has recorded 41 strikeouts on the year. In non-league action Thursday afternoon, the girls defeated York School of Technology at home. Waugh got the start, striking out eight in the process. The ladies did their damage late in the game putting up four runs in the sixth and seventh innings. They even needed extra innings to decide the contest which ultimately saw the Tide come out on top. So they walked off their last game of the season to end on a high note. The young squad ended the year 3-15 in the section and 4-15 overall. They finished fifth in the Section Four standings only ahead of a winless Lebanon Catholic. They were
three games away from catching Lancaster Mennonite. BASEBALL It was a gorgeous afternoon for some baseball as the Tide traveled to Lancaster Mennonite Monday May 6th. Zac Nikolaus got the ball for Columbia and pitched a gem only allowing two runs in a 9-3 victory. The rest of the team followed his lead. The Tide got rolling early as Ryan Redding singled, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch. Nikolaus made the bottom frame look easy, as he did much of day, by striking out the side. He followed it up with a quick 1-2-3 second inning. He did surrender a few walks but he came out unscathed. “The bats have been inconsistent but lately we have been heating up,” head coach Brandon Robinson said. The bats really broke out in the fourth when Matt McCleary walked. Then, after two quick outs David Hershey hit his second double on the day bringing in Mcleary. Matt Gambler then doubled into left center field to score Hershey. Mathew Derr walked to
extend the inning. Nikolaus helped his cause with an RBI single and also stole a bag. Redding stayed hot with a single that brought in two runs. Collin McCartey doubled to bring in Redding and McCleary picked up his second walk of the inning. Columbia scored six runs in the inning while batting around giving themselves a 7-1 lead they would not relinquish. The Tide also put up two runs in the next inning when Nikolaus connected with a bloop single that scored Hershey and Gambler. 9-1 Tide. They ended the game with 13 hits and only gave up three runs on five hits as Nikolaus and Redding truly led the way both on the mound and in the batters box. Nikolaus ended the day with eight strikeouts while Redding recorded four while giving up a single run in game they easily won 9-3. They also got in done with the stick as well with Redding going 3-4 with three steals and 2 RBI’s, Nikolaus brought in three runs and Hershey went 3-4 on the day with a RBI. This gave them their sixth section win
of the year and their seventh win overall which is a huge improvement from last year when they did not win at all. They finished with eight wins overall as they knocked off York School of Technology 8-3 at home on May 9th to wrap up their season. “The kids are just playing with a lot of effort and heart this year,” Robinson said. “Getting out of that losing mentality and getting that winning mentality.” Robinson credits the players with simply changing their mentalities. They now have a winning mentality and it really started from other sports because football and basketball also started winning. Being a smaller school in the county means most athletes play multiple sports, seven of them being a part of the baseball team. He also praises the boys for working hard in the offseason and coming in prepared, and focused ready to produce. Although he knows they were not always consistent, Robinson thinks they surprised people and will continue to do so in the future. He looks forward to seeing the See Tide pg 6

Knights Push K-D Despite 3-2 Loss by Eric Pyles
The 2109 season officially came to a close on May 7th for the Eastern York boys’ volleyball team and the Golden Knights saved their best for last. The result was a loss but Eastern pushed Kennard-Dale to the limit before falling 3-2. With a 25-21 opening set victory and a 25-14 fourth set win the Golden Knights were able to extend the match to a decisive fifth set for the first time all season. Unfortunately, the Rams claimed that set, 15-13, securing KD’s win after backto-back 25-22 victories in the second and third sets. Brady Bixler and Nolan Reichard were at the forefront of the attack with Reichard dishing out 21 assists to go with six kills while Bixler had 15 kills and two assists. The pair helped with the defensive side as well with matching five dig efforts and a combined nine blocks, six by Bixler. Jake Kennell offered 13 digs, three kills, two blocks and an assist with Nick Spotts posting a team high 16 digs. Devyn Sanders chipped in with 10 assists and seven digs. Eastern York’s second to last match was a 3-0 loss to Susquehannock on the 2nd. The Golden Knights were unable to avoid the sweep but they made the Warriors work for the 25-18, 25-19 and 26-24 wins. Reichard posted a team high 12 assists with Bixler and Spotts matching that tally in digs. Bixler added a team high 10 kills to go
with four blocks, one ace and one assist while Reichard finished with five digs, four kills, two blocks and a team high two aces. Sanders collected five assists, three digs and one block with Spotts adding two kills to his 12 digs. BASEBALL The baseball team’s march to the postseason hit a bump on May 6th with a 7-5 loss to Kennard-Dale that snapped a three-game winning streak and left the Golden Knights with an 11-6 record. They did find the going smoother on the 8th with a walk-off victory over West York bumping their record to 12-6 overall, good enough for seventh place in the District 3-4A rankings. If the rankings hold until becoming official on May 16th the Golden Knights would host West Perry on the 20th in a first-round tilt. As for the loss to KD, it appeared that Eastern was on their way to a win after a three-run spurt in the top of the sixth put them up 3-2. Jacob Bardo pushed the first run across with the popular based loaded hit-by-pitch RBI. Bren Taylor knotted the game at 2-2 when he stole home and Quinton McNew put his squad up with a fielder’s choice RBI that also counted as the second out of the inning. The Rams countered with a five-run bottom half to regain the lead, 7-3. Taylor mounted another charge in the seventh with a one out double to left that cut Kennard-Dale’s lead to two runs but the Golden Knights could not
continue their rally as KD forced two quick outs to end the game. Evan Rishell covered five and two third innings before hitting his pitch limit allowing Owen Shimmel to cover the final one third of an inning. Rishell had six strikeouts and four walks and was on the hook for five of KD’s runs. Eastern York regained their winning swagger on the 8th with that walk-off win over Division III leading West York. Bardo provided the heroics with a walk off single that scored Taylor who had knotted the game at 4-4 two batters prior. While Bardo gave Eastern their last lead, it was Emmit Silar that gave Eastern their first with a first inning fielder’s choice. The Golden Knights picked up a second run in the frame thanks to a Bulldog error. West York provided the game’s first tie with a two-run top of the third but Eastern York moved right back in front with a McNew sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning. McNew ended up with the win despite throwing just three pitches after relieving Shimmel who had reached his pitch limit in the top of the seventh. That meant that Shimmel’s day ended with a no decision after pitching six and two thirds innings. He allowed all six West York hits and all four of their runs but added five strikeouts with
just one walk. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The girl’s lacrosse team moved one step closer to the end of the regular season with their May 2nd battle with South Western. The Lady Golden Knights suffered a 19-11 setback despite seven goals from Addy Malone. Summer Breen finished with three saves while Regan Young, Victoria Zerbe, Haley Holtzinger and Ellie Lippy finished out the scoring with one goal apiece. TRACK On Friday May 3rd the Golden Knight track and field team welcomed nine other teams to Wrightsville for the Battle for the Bridge Invitational. Both sides performed well with the Lady Golden Knights outpacing the boy’s side in podium finishes, 13-12 while the boy’s collected more top three hardware by a 5-4 count. The boy’s push was fronted by Demonte Martin and his hurdle prowess. The senior captured gold in the 110H with a time of 14.97 and nabbed bronze in the 300H with a time of 41.80. Martin added a fourthplace finish in the high jump to his day. Drake Brown also picked up a gold with a toss of 139-1 in the discus. Weston McLain gave the Golden
Knights two throwing medals with a third-place throw of 147-10 in the javelin. Tyrel Emig secured the final top three finish, collecting bronze in the 800m with a time of 2:04.90. Tyler Druck clocked in just over five seconds later to take seventh. Hailu Barrow cleared 9-6 in the pole vault to finish in a fourth-place tie with Solanco’s Marci Revoloria-Morales while Dylan Zurin ended up fifth in the long jump with a top distance of 18-8.75. Gavin Johnson picked up the final medal in the field with a sixth-place finish in the triple jump. Bryce Currier claimed eighth in the 400m (55.76) while James Johnson took seventh in the 200m (24.74). For the Lady Golden Knights three athletes accounted for nine of their 13 podium finishes. Sarah Moore led the way with four, all coming in the field. Her top finish was sixth with a throw of 27-2.5 in the shot put. She added eighth place finishes in the discus (8011) and javelin (80-10) to go with her seventh-place finish in the high jump. Emily Smith secured one of Eastern’s two bronze medals with a toss of 96-2 in the javelin. She added a fourthplace finish in the discus with a top throw of 94-8. Maya Stump rounded
out Eastern York’s top trio. She picked up Eastern’s second bronze with a 310.5 in the triple jump and their lone silver by clearing 4-8 in the high jump. Stump’s final podium finish came in the pole vault where she finished in a four-way tie for eighth along with Mia Shrom and two others. Olivia McLain brought home the Lady Golden Knights lone gold medal with a 5:19.67 in the 1600m while Emily Hoyer and Cassidy Shetter made it five different events with multiple medals. The pair did their work in the 100m where Hoyer finished fifth (13.53) and Shetter seventh (13.76). SOFTBALL The Eastern York softball team saw their five-game winning streak snapped on May 8th with a 9-1 loss to New Oxford. Maelynn Leber took the loss, allowing seven of the Lady Colonials runs on 10 hits and one walk. She tallied all six of Eastern’s strikeouts after covering the first five innings. Analise Fenwick pitched the final two innings and surrendered the final two runs on three hits. Gillian Toomey plated Eastern’s lone run with a double in the fourth but New Oxford followed with a three See Knights pg 6

We will try to get 14 wins and make districts. “We were goal oriented this year and we didn’t make districts but to get to eight wins that is huge,” Robinson said of the season in review. The wins placed them fourth in Section Four ahead of Lebanon Catholic and Lancaster Mennonite while being just one game being Pequea Valley.
Lady Shamrock runs fell under the unearned column. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boy’s lacrosse team closed their regular season with a 1-1 stretch that put their overall record at 8-8, good enough for 10th in the final District 3-2A rankings. That sets up another game with York Suburban in the opening round of the district playoffs that kick off May 14th where Eastern hopes to reverse the previous outcome, a 16-10 loss back on April 4th. Eastern got the loss out of the way first, falling to South Western by a 19-12 count. Gavin Evans led the way with four goals and two assists while Cayden Michael tacked on three goals and an assist. Bryce Henise and Jake Crumling finished with matching two goal, two assist games while Rylan Emlet picked up the final score. Kade Wiley turned away eight shots. The Golden Knights rebounded by closing out the regular season with a 11-7 victory over Daniel Boone on the 8th. Michael netted the lone hat trick while Henise added three assists to two scores. comes with it. Eastern plated eight of their 10 runs in the top of the fifth to enact the mercy rule. Leber earned the win for her efforts on the mound as well as posting a three hit, three RBI game at the plate. Her work in the circle included three strikeouts and one walk with just two hits allowed. Her day at the plate included three singles with a third inning hit kickstarting the scoring. She picked up her final two RBIs in her second at bat of the fifth with help from a Susquehannock error. McKenzie Buchmyer also picked up two RBIs in the fifth, doing so with a single to center that made it 6-0. Morgan Winter’s lone RBI of her three-hit game also came in the fifth and made it 8-0. A few days prior, the Lady Golden Knights topped Trinity 7-2. Leber put on another show, this time collecting five RBIs with a two home run game. Her first blast came in the bottom of the first, accounting for Eastern’s first two runs. Her second homer came in the fourth and capped the Lady Golden Knights scoring. Katie Lehman picked up Eastern York’s only other RBI with a third inning sac fly that pushed the lead to 4-1. Leber also pitched all seven innings and tallied 13 strikeouts with just two walks to earn the win. She scattered four hits and allowed two runs but both the

“Methodists love to sing,” commented Elaine Savukas, historian and longtime member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 100 W. Main St., Mountville, explaining why the kickoff of the celebration of the congregation’s 175th anniversary will include lots of congregational singing. “Our church has evolved from three separate denominations - United Brethren in Christ, Evangelical United Brethren, and Methodist - and the hymns that we will be singing that day represent all three,” said St. Paul’s music coordinator Betty Simora. The kickoff to a yearlong celebration of the anniversary will be a worship service on Sunday, May 19, at 10 a.m. An instrumental ensemble will perform a prelude beginning at 9:45 a.m. Throughout the service, the chancel choir will sing an anthem; the chime choir will play a medley of songs honoring the congregation’s German heritage, as early services were conducted in both English and German; and the congregation will sing several hymns dated from 1846 to 1913. “These are hymns our congregation loves,” Simora said, listing “Church in the Wildwood,” “The Church’s One Foundation,” and “Fairest Lord Jesus” as those slated to be sung. The service will also include remarks by four pastors who previously served at
St. Paul’s. The Rev. John Lynch, the Rev. Art Rettew, the Rev. Ted Mefford, and the Rev. Janet Steger will reflect on their times with the congregation. District superintendent Bumkoo Chung will offer a blessing, and the current pastor, the Rev. James Cavallero, will preside. Nursery care will be available during the service. Following the service, a catered meal will be served in the fellowship hall. There is a cost, and reservations are required by calling the church at 717-285-5020. During the meal, 30 people who have been members of St. Paul’s for more than 50 years will be recognized, and a time capsule from the 150th anniversary will be opened. Savukas, who will be one of the honorees, said that she remembers boys shooting spit balls from the balcony in the sanctuary during Sunday school. Another longtime member, Wendy Weitzel, recalls the live Nativity St. Paul’s used to hold outside when she was a child. Both Savukas and lay leader John Hostetter Jr. have memories of the steeple and the meeting that took place in 1991 when it needed repairs. “After several hours when they couldn’t figure out how to lower the cost, I went to the copier, ran off a picture of the church, then cut out a chunk of the steeple, and made a copy of the adjusted image,” Savukas related. The meeting wrapped up

quickly once everyone realized that by shortening the steeple by 15 feet, the cost of repairs would be manageable, and St. Paul’s has had a shorter steeple ever since. The bell that once pealed out over the borough was moved to St. Paul’s northeast vestibule, and an electric carillon donated by a church member took its place in the steeple, broadcasting hymns at noon and 6 p.m. A display of memorabilia will be set up during the May 19 event. Wooden tabletop crosses built by the late Bob Stoner will be a significant part of the display, along with photographs of St. Paul’s and its members by the late Donald Millhouse, who was the church historian and Mountville’s unofficial town photographer. While the worship service will be focused on celebrating the past, St. Paul’s UMC has an ongoing mission to practice hospitality and love by nurturing faith in Jesus Christ. Cavallero said that the congregation sponsors Bible2School for young students, and the church liaises with Mountville Elementary School to provide bus passes, food cards, coats, emergency clothing, and other necessities for families in need. At Christmas, the church collects warm winter accessories for LUMINA, and throughout the year, St. Paul’s supports care homes in the borough. “This is an old church but a busy church,” Cavallero remarked.

L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment, with three locations in Lancaster and Mechanicsburg, is celebrating its 87th anniversary. In 1932, Lester H. Brubaker opened a store providing the sales and service of farm equipment in Strasburg. At that time, the only appliances offered were large International freezers used mostly by farmers. In 1960, Donald H. Frank joined the sales and parts department at L.H. Brubaker. Shortly thereafter, Lester permitted General Electric (GE) to display appliances in the showroom. The first year L.H. Brubaker offered appliances, only 90 sold, but those sales were thanks to Donald. Considering appliance sales not to be a good business decision, Lester informed GE that he had decided to get out of the appliance business. GE countered with a compliment, saying that the manufacturer never liked to end business relationships with a reputable company that paid its bills on time, and it requested that a few pieces be displayed in a corner of the showroom and that Donald be allowed to sell them with the tractors and lawn mowers. Lester agreed. That year, Donald sold 295 pieces, and the following year saw sales of 525 appliances. The sales numbers continued to climb as years went by. In 1972, Donald and his wife, Elnora, bought L.H. Brubaker from Lester, and it became solely an appliance store. Counting

Community Invited To Plant Flowers Susquehanna Heritage invites the community to help plant 300 flowers for native wildlife on Sunday, May 19, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, 4 miles south of Wrightsville. The event is free and open to nature lovers of all ages. The center is creating a pollinator garden adjacent to its existing raingarden to demonstrate effective stewardship. Pollinators such as butterflies and bees rely on nectar-producing flowers for food and habitat, and pollinator species help to produce food that humans eat. The garden will provide a habitat and a food source for these species. As with the raingarden, all the plants used will be native species and will be labeled for identification. Plants are being provided through a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust as part of a Chesapeake Conservation Corps project.
Zimmerman Center manager Paul Nevin tends to plants destined for the Center’s new pollinator garden. The community is invited to help plant 300 flowers on May 19 at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, located south of Wrightsville. the Kreutz Creek Library member Laurie Ward said that the estimated start date for the renovation project is dependent upon the township, and no estimate for the date of completion has been set at this point. The cost of renovations will be the same as the proposed library building project; however, Ward noted that renovating the township building will allow for more square footage than the new building would have. The renovation will include expanded open service areas, additional computers with added technology, dedicated program spaces for children and teenagers, and additional seating and meeting space. The Friends of the Kreutz Creek Library have several campaign fundraisers for the renovation project underway and in the works for the coming months. The Friends’ “Wall of Envelopes” campaign is set up inside of the library. Area residents are encouraged to stop by, grab an envelope with a listed donation amount, and save up or work together with family or friends to fill the envelope and return it to the library. Groups and individuals who complete the task have the option of having their photo taken with their envelope for the scrapbook the Friends are creating. The first donor for the project was 9-year-old Anna, who saw the envelope display and gave the very first dollar to the capital campaign. An online auction is planned for Saturday, June 8, through Sunday, June 16. A link will be posted one week prior to that

Names of members of Columbia’s founding families, such as the Wrights, Blunstons, Houstons, and Barbers, occupy the memorials in the Brick Burial Yard, which is the oldest section of the cemetery. Three mausoleums stand out on the grounds, one of which belongs to prominent Columbia businessman William Fordney Lockard. Moore noted that more than 600 veterans from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, and the Vietnam War have burial sites within the grounds. Four of the five men who were known to be responsible for the burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge during the Civil War are also buried in the cemetery.
