townlively.com 5K frompg 1 the 1700s. “There used to be a Memorial Day weekend 5K that was organized through the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce, but when the Chamber dissolved, so did the 5K,” explained Kathy Hohenadel, who is coordinating the Mount Bethel race with Claire Storm. “We wanted to bring the race back to Columbia.”

The coordinators tapped Charles Leader to map the course. “He’s been the crosscountry coach for Columbia High School and an avid runner his whole life,” Hohenadel stated. “I went to him for some insight in putting together a course that would have minimal street closures.” Although she initially considered holding the race in the cemetery, she soon realized there wasn’t enough room, but the high school made a perfect location. Leader created a mixed-terrain course that will include sidewalks, macadam, grass and the Columbia High School track. “It will feature different inclines, and it’s a good course for both walkers and runners,” Hohenadel said. Because of the terrain, the race is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers, and no pets or cleats are allowed.

Awards will be presented in a variety of categories, including overall male and female winners and the first three male and female finishers in 13 age brackets. Proceeds from the race will be used for maintenance of the cemetery, located at 700 Locust St.

“Come out and enjoy a beautiful view overlooking the town and the Susquehanna River,” Hohenadel said, encouraging people to register for the 5K. “There will be plenty of parking, and it’s easy to register. It’s also a great way to help us maintain the history of the cemetery.”

The event is made possible by the sponsorships of multiple businesses and organizations, including Columbia Fraternal Association, Foresters of America Court Susquehanna 235, Columbia American Legion Post 372, Columbia Lions Club, KleenRite Corp., Melanie B. Scheid Funeral Directors & Cremation Services, Nikolaus & Hohenadel, Sunsnappers and Truist Bank.

To register for the 5K, visit www.mtbethelcemetery.org. Same-day registration will also be available. For more information, call 717-681-6768.

The Lancaster County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has begun a 30-day public review and comment period for the Draft Lancaster County FY20232026 Transit and Highway Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The TIP outlines the county’s federally funded transportation improvement priorities and is required for the county to receive and spend federal transportation dollars. The public will have the opportunity to provide comments on the TIP and related documents until Monday, June 13.

The TIP is a listing of highway, bridge, transit, and miscellaneous transportation projects that are expected to move through the project development process over the next four years. The accompanying Air Quality Conformity Analysis (AQCA) document demonstrates project conformity to federal air quality standards.

The draft TIP, the AQCA report, and related documents are available for review at www.lancompo.org/2023-tip. These documents are also available for review at the Lancaster County Planning Department at the Lancaster County Government Center, 150 N. Queen St., Lancaster.

Three public meetings will be held on the TIP and related documents. On Monday, May 23, at 2:30 p.m., the Lancaster County Planning Commission will receive comments at its regularly scheduled meeting at the Lancaster County Government Center or online via Lifesize. On Wednesday, June 1, a virtual public meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Lifesize. On June 13, the Transportation Technical Advisory Committee will receive comments at its regularly scheduled meeting at 12:30 p.m. at the Lancaster County Government Center or via Lifesize. Feline frompg 1

In April, Columbia Animal Shelter launched Senior Cats for Senior Laps, bringing some of its older felines to visit residents at local retirement homes. “It’s a great opportunity to match seniors with senior cats,” Jalbert said. “It’s been proven that seniors do so much better with daily companionship, and senior pets are often overlooked when all they want to do is be somebody’s lap cat. It’s a perfect match.”

Jalbert remarked that the summer tends to be an especially active time for the shelter, with this year’s events including a concert series held on the second Saturday of each month through October; a cornhole tournament on Sunday, May 22; and a Cruisin’ for Cats car show on Saturday, July 30.

McMenemy noted that it’s the perfect time to come on board at the organization. “I came from a background in shelter medicine, and to have the opportunity to build affordable vet services from the ground up is very exciting,” she said.

Columbia Animal Shelter is located at 265 S. 10th St. For more information, visit https://columbiaanimal shelter.com.
