Rebels With A Cause “Star Wars” Fans Feed Homeless In Lancaster By Ann Mead Ash
Kaden Stetler of Lancaster, one of the founders of Rebel Cause, an organization that began feeding homeless people in Lancaster on March 19, credits “Star Wars” with the inspiration behind the group’s mission. “‘Star Wars’ has always been my inner mythology,” explained Stetler. “It’s about helping others and hope and inspiring other people to do the right thing.” Rebel Cause, a group made up of about 15 members living in the Lancaster area and beyond, was founded in 2015 with a dedication to uniting “Star Wars” fans and doing good in the community. The Rebel Cause mission statement reads in See Rebel Cause pg 2

Members of the Plain community are working with Mennonite Disaster Service to produce masks for health care workers and others in the county in need. The effort produced more than 20,000 masks in its first week.
FIA Offers Opportunity To Support Relief Efforts While many local residents may be feeling the effects of staying home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Friends in Action (FIA), a nonprofit headquartered in Middletown, is offering an opportunity to have a global impact. Since 1992, FIA has used infrastructure projects as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached people groups in extremely remote areas. On April 6, Cyclone Harold, a Category 5 cyclone and the secondlargest storm in Vanuatu’s history, almost leveled the South Pacific island country. Here are a few ways to say thank you:
In early April, when Larry Stoner, Region 1 operations coordinator with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS), 583 Airport Road, Lititz, learned that Bird-in-Hand Fabric, owned by Sylvan and Loraine Stoltzfus, had been creating masks for anyone who requested one in response to the COVID-19 crisis, he was moved to involve MDS to help. “They had been making them for about two weeks out of the kindness of their hearts, and they were giving fabric and getting elastic and (wire) for the nose (to others who were making them),” Stoner explained. Bird-in-Hand resident Manny Flaud, who is associated with the Lancaster MDS unit, knows the Stoltzfuses, and he contacted them on behalf of MDS. “(The Stoltzfuses) were overwhelmed with thousands of requests (for masks),” recalled Stoner, who noted
that requests had come from the Lancaster County Prison, Red Rose Transit Authority, and Water Street Mission, along with retirement homes. “Everyone was desperate for face masks made of fabric.” Stoner noted that the sewers associated with the fabric shop had produced about 20,000 masks in the two weeks prior to MDS becoming involved in production. On April 3, a conference call with the MDS unit board was held. Initially, MDS representatives made a decision to help the fabric store cut the material for masks. “We got a pattern from WellSpan (Ephrata Community) Hospital (for an approved fabric mask),” said Stoner, who noted that specifications included the type of material to be used and the length of elastic. “We switched to their pattern as soon as we understood that it was acceptable to the hospital for the health care workers,” said Stoner. part, “We are committed to helping the homeless in Lancaster County with dignity and compassion.” Until recently, Rebel Cause aided local members of the homeless community with regular events. “We sponsored community meals on the weekends and held fundraisers for needs of the homeless community,” said Stetler. “We would use whatever space was available to us, including churches and community centers.” When Gov. Tom Wolf announced that all non-essential

businesses would be closed, Stetler found himself out of work. “I knew Rebel Cause was in a position to do something (for the homeless),” said Stetler. “We started the very next day making food and handing it out to the homeless, and through that I became officially connected with the city to use one area to serve meals.” Rebel Cause volunteers hand out dinners each evening of the week, including weekends, at 6:30 p.m. from the sidewalk on the Beaver Street side of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, which is located at 119 S. Prince St., Lancaster. Food for the meals is donated by a large number of area contributors. The dinners are cooked at Rumplebrewskin’s, located at 834 N. Plum St. in Lancaster, a restaurant that has been closed by the COVID-19 restrictions. According to Stetler, about five volunteers arrive at the restaurant daily around 2 p.m. to start cooking. “We package meals at 5:30 and head to St. Mary’s around 6 p.m.,” reported Stetler. Since the group members began providing meals, they have given out an average of 700 to 1,000 meals weekly. In addition to handing out meals, Rebel Cause has opened a day center at Crossroads Mennonite Church at 401 Church St., Lancaster. The day center is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The center offers coffee, snacks, movies, books, art classes and art therapy, yoga classes, and live music. “We have a 20-person limit, and we are close to full each day,” Stetler said. Stetler noted that about 20 volunteers per day take part in the efforts to hand out meals and run the day center. To promote safety and comply with Pennsylvania COVID-19 recommendations, volunteers wear masks reminiscent of “Star Wars” characters and also hand them out to those who need them. The masks are made by MADS Enterprises in Lancaster, and Stetler reported that about 300 masks had been given away by mid-April. Readers who would like to know more about Rebel Cause may visit http://rebelcause lancaster.com or search for “Rebel Cause Lancaster” on Facebook.

The Lancaster County Board of Elections is in need of poll workers for the general primary election on Tuesday, June 2. Many of its usual poll workers are considered in the high-risk group and have expressed concern about working in the polls due to coronavirus. Full-day judges of election and inspectors of election are especially needed. Clerks are welcome. The board is presently looking for roles to be filled in Lancaster city, East Cocalico Township, East Donegal, Lancaster Township, Manheim Township, Millersville, Strasburg Borough, West Hempfield Township, and West Lampeter Township. Poll workers do not need to live in the precinct where they work. Online poll worker training is provided, and there is financial compensation. Those who are registered to

There is little to no palm leaf left, and it will take two to three years to regrow. With no income to buy building supplies, the people are in dire need of shelter. “Thirty to forty of us women and children packed into a larger hut while the wind was pulling at the roof and sides and rain pounded through. The men ran outside and stood around the hut to hold the roof on. I was scared we all would die,” shared a NiVan village woman, recalling her village’s harrowing tale of survival. Partnering with missionaries, national pastors, and workers in the region, FIA is raising funds to secure cyclone relief supplies for the villages of Suranda, Mataloi, and Valui. Food bundles of tin tuna, rice, and noodles feed a family of eight for a week, totaling less than $3.25 per person daily. some of whom still wear leaves or traditional loincloths for clothing and survive on subsistence farming, the storm was catastrophic. Dense jungle was shredded into barren sticks, entire villages were wiped out, roads were destroyed by flooding, and mudslides and debris caused a delay in the efforts to account for hundreds of villagers. Any food gardens and crops were decimated. To cope, people foraged what was left of gardens and root crops for food. Rivers and creeks have been used as water sources, but contamination from livestock has led to waterborne illnesses. “We’ve been eating what we can find on the ground, but that will soon be gone. I don’t know how we will survive,” a NiVan man speaking his native Bislama tongue told FIA missionary partners in the area. An estimated 80% to 90% of the villagers’ bamboo huts with grassthatched roofs were destroyed.

“Word was put out on April 3 that we needed volunteers willing to cut the patterns and get (cut material) to sewers,” recalled Stoner, who noted that shortly after that the Groffdale Conference Mennonite Community began cutting and sewing face masks to assist the other sewers. Because the Groffdale community does not drive cars, MDS provided drivers to move material. “On April 7, we started cutting material and getting it to sewers,” Stoner stated, sharing that the 100 volunteers created 20,000 masks the first week. “ We are calling every fabric shop in the county,” said Stoner on April 13, who had traveled to Schaefferstown for material as well as to pick up 70 rolls of quarter-inch elastic. “We are getting connected with the right people to know where to buy things we need,” he noted. By mid-April, MDS was being asked to help make clinical masks for WellSpan. “The goal

is to have groups manufacture 100,000 per week for the next eight weeks starting (the week of April 13),” said Stoner, who noted that the masks, which will be used by doctors, will be used one time and then thrown away. “The pattern is a little different and the material is not fabric,” shared Stoner, who said that he believes the volunteers can manufacture 25,000 of the masks per week. Stoner is recruiting members of the Plain community to help with the mask effort, and he has also been spreading information about COVID-19 best practices. “We are trying to get the word out about wearing masks, social distancing, and washing of hands … to take this seriously,” he said. Virtual Heart Ball Slated

GREEN VALLEY GREENHOUSES
Volunteers, survivors and supporters will gather for the American Heart Association’s annual York Heart Ball, a virtual event, on Saturday, May 30, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The theme will be “Night With the Stars - at Home.” The annual gala will highlight the need to advance scientific research and expand community programs that protect the cardiovascular health of York County residents. The association is working to provide reliable, science-based information for the approximately 120 million people in the United States who currently have one or more cardiovascular conditions which could put them at higher risk for COVID-19 complications. The event will feature the story of 15-year-old local congenital heart defect survivor Nathan Campisi. Nate’s parents, Jason Campisi and Amy Foxwell, learned that Amy was pregnant after three years of trying. After some early tests revealed that their baby might have spina bifida, they started going for ultrasounds more frequently. Additional testing showed the earlier test may have been a false positive. However, during a 33rd-week ultrasound, doctors noticed

something wrong with the baby’s heart. One week later, Nate was born. Doctors moved the baby to the NICU, where they learned that Nate had a congenital heart defect called anductus arteriosus and would need open heart surgery right away. While they waited for surgery day, Nate developed a life-threatening infection that only added to their worry. He fought the infection and made it through his surgery successfully. He recovered from the surgery, but a regular hearing test revealed that Nate was deaf, a possible side effect of the medicine he received to fight his infection. He was diagnosed with auditory neuropathy, but with the help of a hearing aid he received at age 3, he is able to live a normal life. “After all of that, Nate is on the dean’s list at school, loves basketball and video games, and we couldn’t be more proud or happy for him and what his future holds,” said Jason. “If it weren’t for all of the screening, testing, medications and surgical expertise available to him, Nate would not be with us today. We’re helping the American Heart Association with their fight to advance research and
healthier lives, because you never know if those advancements could just save someone in your family.” The York Heart Ball is a premier event for the American Heart Association and is attended by philanthropists and supporters committed to the lifesaving work of the organization. Attendees are encouraged to dress formally for a virtual red carpet. The event will highlight milestones in the fight against heart disease and stroke, provide healthy recipe tips during a cooking demonstration from UPMC, and offer auction items up for bids. All proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association, which recently announced a $2.5 million fund for rapid response scientific research projects to investigate the specific cardiovascular implications of coronavirus. The York Heart Ball will be hosted by local news anchor Amy Lutz and her husband, Peter Smith. The American Heart Association is an organization focused on heart and brain health for all. For more information and to register for the York Heart Ball, readers may visit http://york heartball.heart.org or follow #YorkHeartBall on social media.
The virtual York Heart Ball will take place on Saturday, May 30. The event will feature the story of 15-yearold congenital heart defect survivor Nathan Campisi.
