History frompg 1

The building that houses the historical museum was built in 1871 and was the home of John and Mary Redman during the mid-20th century. Upon the death of the Redman daughters, the family donated the house to Historic Wrightsville, which had been looking for a home for its museum.

Historic Wrightsville also operates the Burning of the Bridge Diorama, which is located in a building that formerly housed a post office and barber shop. “The diorama is a model that gives a visual of Wrightsville in 1863, the advancing Confederate troops, and the eventual burning of the bridge, which prevented Gen. Gordon from moving toward Philadelphia and Harrisburg,” explained diorama director and former history teacher Bob Heiserman. “The model is accompanied by a narrated video, and docents answer questions and provide additional information during the presentation.”

To help raise funds for the museums, Historic Wrightsville will host a community yard sale and food truck event beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 5. “We’ll have it set up at the museum on Locust Street, and we’ll have a list of other yard sales in town happening that same day,” said Kostas.

The Wrightsville Historical Museum is open on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and by appointment on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The diorama is also open on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and by appointment for special showings. For more information on the yard sale event or Historic Wrightsville, search for “Historic Wrightsville Incorporated” on Facebook or call 717-252-1169.

Golfing For A Good Cause

BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Playing golf on Friday, June 11, can help support economic development in Columbia. That’s when the Columbia Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) will hold a golf tournament at Cool Creek Golf Club, 300 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and the tournament will kick off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

“We are a not-for-profit organization … dedicated to promoting business development and expansion within Columbia,” explained Bill Kloidt, executive director of CEDC. “Proceeds from the golf tournament help finance our organization in promoting Columbia and assisting new businesses that wish to open in the borough.”

This is the fourth year the CEDC has hosted a golf tournament, said Keith Lutz, CEDC president. The organization had to cancel last year’s tournament, so this year is especially exciting, he noted. “We are very optimistic about this event,” he said. “People are ready to come out to an outdoor event like this, and we’re ready for them.”

People may sign up to participate as individuals or as a team of four, Kloidt said. “If you sign up individually, we will assign you to a team,” he stated. The event will

“This design was picked by two judging panels, one being student judges from York County schools and then a professional panel,” said Tracy Linn of The Center for Traffic Safety in York. “More weight is put on the student judging comments, which included several explaining that they picked this design because the bear made them think of others, including family members, and that they should drive safer for (those family members) and themselves.”

Hill noted that the team took the challenge seriously from the start. “Mackenzie, Ethan and Stephen are at the age where they and their friends are starting to drive or will start driving soon,” Hill said. “The safety of using seatbelts was important to them. … In the middle of a pandemic, they collaborated online and worked hard to create their design. I am very proud of them.” For their win, each team member received $100, and Columbia High School earned a $1,000 grant.

Linn emphasized that focusing on safe driving for teens is paramount in Pennsylvania, where teen drivers have accounted for 22% of all crashes in Lancaster County in the last five years. Teen drivers were also the cause of 34 fatalities. “Based on crash data, the location of the billboard was selected due to the fact this in a high incident area for crashes involving teen drivers,” she stated.

The billboard design contest has been a project of The Center for Traffic Safety for about 10 years, Linn noted, adding, “We offer this billboard in hopes that this peer-topeer education resonates with teens. Who else better to learn from than your peers?”
