moment in high school - graduation. Like Robert, she said she enjoyed attending a high school where people feel connected. “I like that you’re close to everybody at Columbia, and you know everybody,” she commented. Alayna, the daughter of Kimberly and Christian Morales, used a moment from the fall of 2019 as the focus on her speech. “I talked about my spinal surgery and the effects it had on me afterwards,” she noted. Alayna plans to attend Millersville University to major in music education and wants to become a music teacher. “I loved all of the opportunities we had at

Columbia because we’re a small school,” she said. “We had a chance to try so many things.” Ereny is the daughter of Emad Hanna and Amal Georges and Magda Sewaha. “My defining moment wasn’t really mine. It was my parents’ decision to come to America,” she said, of her family members who came from Egypt when she was a 1 year old. She plans to attend Penn State Harrisburg to major in bio behavioral science and become a physician assistant. “I’m so glad I went to Columbia because I love that I don’t feel like an outsider here,” she remarked. Marietta is a community full of creative gardens, and several of them will be on display when the Marietta Garden Tour is held on Sunday, June 5. The selfguided tour will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature eight stops. Proceeds will benefit the preservation of the Marietta Community House. Highlights of the tour will include a newly placed rock garden on a property whose history can be traced back as far as the 1760s. Other gardens will feature fountains, raised vegetable beds, heirloom plants, fruit trees and colorful perennials. “One garden on the tour has more than 150 varieties of daylilies,” noted Lauralee Baker, one of the tour coordinators. Along with private homes, the tour will feature the gardens of a local business and a prayer garden at a Marietta church. The First National Bank and Mulberry Thrill will be open at 100 W. Market St. for tours and refreshments during the garden tour.

Sarah is the daughter of Jodi Hollerbush. Her defining moment was the strength she found to survive a domestic abuse situation. Her plans include attending Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences to pursue a career in nursing. “I’m so glad I went to Columbia because it’s given me opportunities to work closely with the community,” she said.
Ethan, the son of John and Nina Schmitt, gave a speech about the lessons he learned from his first job. “I realized I want to work hard to get where I want to be in life,” he noted. He plans to attend Penn State Harrisburg for mechanical engineering. Of his time at Columbia, he said simply, “I met my best friends here.”

Grants were also awarded to Landis Woods Nature Preschool for improving and expanding its previously launched sustainable garden by adding archways between raised beds, an outdoor composter, and a tiller for mixing compost into the soil, and Montessori Academy of Lancaster for acquiring several unassembled turning compost bins for use with the restart and rejuvenation of its handson composting program. Awarded once a year, the grants are funded primarily with money generated through the club’s annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike. Charitable, educational, or business organizations in Lancaster County that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet are eligible to apply for a grant of $500 or less, according to program rules. The deadline to apply for the next cycle of awards is Friday, March 31, 2023. Recipients will be announced on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22. For complete details about the Green Project grant program, visit http://lancastersierra club.org/grant-program or contact 717-475-0586 or jimsmeenan@gmail.com.
Karen Sullivan in one of the gardens on the Marietta Garden Tour
Educational seminars will be held on the porch of the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., and admission is included for tour ticket holders. At noon and 2 p.m., Rosemarie Curcio will present “Bats in the Garden.” At 1 and 3 p.m., Carrie Lyn Strong will present “Garden Recipes.” A pulled pork barbecue meal will be served from 11 a.m. until sold out in the Marietta Community House during the tour for an additional charge. Karen Sullivan, one of the tour coordinators, said the tour has been held in Marietta for more than 10 years, after a group of garden enthusiasts revived a tradition started years earlier. “ We wanted to have a garden tour again because there are so many nice gardens in Marietta,” she stated. Sullivan noted that she and Baker often discover places to highlight during walks through town in the

summer. “We go up and down alleys and we’re always looking,” she said with a laugh. “If something looks like a good option for the tour, we’ll knock on the door and ask if the people want to participate. People are really interested in the Marietta Community House and want to see it thrive.” The Marietta Community House is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and supporting Marietta through community events. Along with the greenery on display, the tour will give participants a chance to take in some of the unique architecture in town, Baker said, adding, “There’s a nice historical aspect to the tour. Marietta has so many older homes and even if you’re not really into gardening, it will be fun
to see these homes up close from the outside.” Marietta Garden Tour tickets are available for a discount in advance at Floral Designs of Mount Joy, 1599 W. Main St., Mount Joy; Bron’s Deli, 34 W. Market St., Marietta; River Road Produce, 1835 River
Road, Marietta; and Murphy’s Mercantile and Co., 261 Locust St., Columbia. Fullprice tickets will be available at the Marietta Community House on the day of the event. For more information, visit https://mariettacommunity house.org.

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group awarded its Green Project grants to eight more Lancaster County organizations, each of which had showed a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards of up to $500, a total of 71 Lancaster County organizations have received green grants from the club over the past seven years. Organizations receiving the grants, along with their projects, include Gnome Countryside, for establishing a Sustainability Summit in September for leaders from local college environmental clubs, businesses, and the community; Hamilton Park United Church of Christ, launching a church group, called Creation Care Kids, whose overall goal is to teach families, friends, and neighbors the value of understanding and preserving the Earth; and Historic Poole Forge, rebuilding and renovating raised beds and setting new plants at its Enrichment and Children’s Education Garden, which was damaged during a summer flood. In addition, grants were awarded to Homefields Inc. to expand “Talks in the Fields” events to include activities that engage volunteers and community members in creating useable goods from its farm products that can be shared at Millersville’s monthly Manor Market; Kraybill Mennonite School to purchase a greenhouse that will expand its organic learning garden, which was developed in partnership with the Edible Garden; and Landis Homes - Friends of the Woods and Wetlands to develop a speakers series that will include presentations by professionals on a variety of
