Take it outside with Art in the Gardens

Create Columbia will present Art in the Gardens on Saturday, June 10. The tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature music, artists working en plein air and plenty of foliage.

“Attending Art in the Gardens provides an opportunity to enjoy the creative designs, innovative use of space and artistry of local

gardeners,” said Kathy Hohenadel, a member of the garden tour committee. “Many attendees leave the tour with their own ‘Aha!’ moment when they realize that they could modify an idea used in a host garden as a way to enhance their own garden. Attendees also have an opportunity to interact with artists located in the gardens to discuss inspiration and methods or to just watch the creative process unfold.”

Thunder on the River

OnSaturday, June 17, be prepared for the sound of thunder in Columbia. This isn’t ordinary thunder from a storm, however. Instead, it will be sound of hundreds of engines revving at noon as part of the Thunder on the River event. Hosted by the Columbia Lions Club, Thunder on the River will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along and around Locust Street and in Locust Street Park.

“It’s going to be a really nice event,” said Grant Shultz, who is organizing the event with Paul Resch. “We have 475 vehicles registered.”

Trophies will be awarded in a variety of categories, including Best of Show and the Barry Doutrich Memorial, named for the local auto service center owner who originated the car show in 2005. “We have

about 85 trophies we’ll be giving out,” Shultz stated.

A variety of food options will be available during the event, including several food trucks and local vendors on Locust Street. “We have a lot of Columbia organizations setting up stands, and we encourage people to eat at restaurants in Columbia,” Shultz remarked, adding that a list of restaurants may be found at https://columbiamerchants.com.

Activities for children will be held at CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, 401 Locust St. “The Columbia Borough Police will be handing out Hot Wheels cars to all the kids, and there will be a Hot Wheels racetrack set up,” Shultz commented.

Proceeds from Thunder on the River will benefit three local charities - 96.1 SOX Toy Challenge on the Bridge, Janson Park playground

and the 11-11-11 Club. Since 2014, the Lions Club has donated more than $43,000 to local nonprofits. Additionally, car show participants are required to donate canned goods for the Columbia Food Bank as part of the registration process for Thunder on the River, Shultz said.

He noted that the day offers fun for the whole family, from adult car enthusiasts to children. “We’ll have music playing all day, including the Kracker Beez band, who will be performing around noon,” he stated. “It’s a great time to come to Columbia, hang out, walk up and down Locust Street, check out the cars, enjoy some food and have fun with your family.”

The Columbia Historic Preservation Society works to protect and promote the rich history of Columbia, and you can help support the organization’s mission by attending events happening this month. Columbia Railroad Day will be held on Saturday, June 10, and a Juneteenth Dinner will be held on Saturday, June 17, followed by a presentation at Zion Hill Cemetery on Sunday, June 18.

“We are going to have events at three different locations during Railroad Day,” said Chris Vera, president of the Historic Preservation

Society. “You’ll be able to hop on the trolley and go to each place.” Events will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. At Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., two Civil War re-enactment units will be demonstrating, along with a World War II transportation group. Lectures on the railroad’s importance in Columbia will also be offered. People can ride the trolley to Columbia Historic Preservation Society, 21 N. Second St., where visitors can take in a 2,500-squarefoot model railroad display upstairs and check out a smaller display on the ground floor. Next, people can travel by trolley to the Columbia

The Juneteenth Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. on June 17 at the Columbia Market House and will feature a speaker talking about the Zion Hill Cemetery in town, where African American veterans and other residents of the Tow Hill neighborhood are buried. “We are also going to have Nelson Polite Jr. as our special speaker, and he’ll be giving a talk about African American history,” Vera said, adding that Polite is the president of the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania. A meal will be served by South Lime restaurant, located in the market house. “They’re going to be preparing food from West Africa,” Vera noted.

Proceeds from the Railroad Day and the dinner will bene-

fit ongoing restoration work at Zion Hill Cemetery. “I have just had eight interpretative panels made, and they are going to tell people about the Tow Hill people who are buried at the cemetery,” Vera shared. The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the cemetery, 553 N.

Fifth St. “We’ll be talking about what our future plans are as well as unveiling the panels and a memorial wall,” he remarked. “The wall is going to be made using floor bricks from the Market House.”

Vera encourages everyone to come to the events and help support the Columbia Historic Preservation Society. “You can learn all about the

history of Columbia and get out and enjoy a relaxing day in town,” he stated. “It’s a great opportunity to learn about African-American history and railroad history in Columbia.”

Making friends through film

In 2018, Hempfield High School (HHS) teacher Matt Binder and Chris Schwalm from Cedar Crest High School were discussing ideas for new media programs in the area. Local schools typically only have one media or journalism teacher per district, so the two brainstormed how they could find a way to unite students across the region.

Binder, who teaches CommTech at HHS, wanted to create an event that would stray from a typical film contest that focuses on students’ competition with each other. “Usually in our field, contests pit school against school. But when students get to college, they’ll need to learn how to work with people who aren’t their friends,” Binder said.

Binder and Schwalm came up with the idea to host a film festival for students and partnered with Elizabethtown College, which agreed to have the event on its campus. The first contest was held in the spring of 2019 and returned last year after taking a break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students returned to Elizabethtown College on May 22 for this year’s event, which

included middle school and high school students from Hempfield, Solanco, Cedar Crest, Donegal, Eastern York and Waynesboro school districts. Upon arriving at the college, the students were divided into groups with kids from different schools and were assigned a prompt that they needed to use to make a video. Certain students in each group were assigned roles such as director or editor.

For the first portion of the day, the groups dispersed across the campus to come up

with an idea and find a location to film. While the director and other group members shot the footage, the editors got to tour Elizabethtown College’s communications facility, which includes a radio station, an editing room and television studio. Once the director and company were done filming, they handed the footage to the editors and took their own tour. After about an hour, each group’s editor submitted their group’s video for the contest.

“This is great experience for

students to work with people they don’t know yet and to meet new people,” said Tony Mendez, the technology education teacher at Solanco High School. “They’ll have to do this in college, and it was awesome to see them so excited and working together.”

At the end of the day, the students gathered in the college’s auditorium for a screening of the videos. Some groups created advertisements for items that would be important for one to take to college; others were tasked with making a music video with a part of a song. After watching each video, each student voted on his or her favorite one, and winners were named in the middle school and high school categories. “The main goal was to get students and teachers together at the end of the year by using the subject or hobby they love to bond,” Binder said. “Since our programs are relatively small within each school district, the kids get to meet and find people like them from other schools.”

“Overall, it was a great day for not only my students, but every student who participated,” Mendez added.

Trail application available for Apple devices

The Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has announced that the Susquehanna NHA app is now available on the App Store for IOS users. Created through a partnership with Franklin & Marshall College computer science course students in 2021, the app was first made available through Google Play under the name Susquehanna NHA Trails.

The app is part of SNHA’s ongoing mission to connect visitors to the outdoor recreation amenities along the Susquehanna River. In the

app, trail access areas, parking information, restroom facilities, and heritage sites are listed individually for major regional trails and nature preserves. The app also allows Susquehanna NHA to send notifications about trail updates or construction.

Users can also check to see if the James D. Warner Passageway under the Shock’s Mill Bridge on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail is flooded. This waterfront passageway floods during spring freshets and on occasion in the summer. There is no avail-

able trail detour, so it is helpful for users to check before hitting the trail.

The application has event and contact information for Susquehanna NHA to better connect its community to riverfront initiatives. Another feature of the app allows users to submit trail maintenance requests. Trail users can submit the trail name, the mile marker, and a photo of the issue. This interactive component is designed to help trail managers keep local trails clear and accessible.

Local Boys & Girls Club alumnus to speak at event

Stand-up comedian and professional caddie Michael Collins will return to his hometown of Lancaster on Thursday, June 15, to be the keynote speaker at the Club to CLUBS event benefiting Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster. The festivities will start at 5:30 p.m. at Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster.

The event will help to launch a new opportunity at the Boys & Girls Club, which will connect youths in Lancaster city and Columbia to

the game of golf. Mentors, ranging from volunteer everyday golfers to clubhouse pros, will help youths to understand the game, the strategy, and the etiquette so they may feel comfortable on the green. In addition, youth members will have the opportunity to become trained caddies at Lancaster Country Club as well as to caddie for scholarship opportunities through the J. Wood Platt Scholarship Trust.

For the past 30 years,

Collins has been making people laugh on and off the course. He has combined his comedy and caddying talents in his role as an ESPN golf analyst and host of “America’s Caddie” on ESPN+. Collins travels across the country covering the professional golf tour and interviewing golf’s biggest stars.
