With its recent pop-up distribution in Wrightsville, the York County Food Bank aimed to supplement the Eastern York Food Pantry’s work to serve the community and serve everyone in need of food. The York County Food Bank has worked to support its partner agencies to ensure that no one in York County goes hungry. It has also hosted a weekly food distribution at its Emergency Hub in East York and additional pop-ups throughout the county, serving thousands of families each week. When the picnic was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Cole wanted to re-create a part of the picnic in time for Mother’s Day, which was held on May 10. Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, has created a virtual flower garden that mothers and other family members may use to honor the child they lost. Although the virtual garden was created for Mother’s Day, it will be available into the future for those who would like to dedicate a flower to their child.

Tests, treatments, and cures for the novel coronavirus are advertised online and even by text or phone call, but those products may only leave buyers with less money and no good outcomes. “Fraudsters prey on public fears during times like these,” said Master Trooper Kelly Osborne, community service and public information officer with Troop J - Lancaster of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). She added that scammers often target seniors, and worry about contracting COVID-19 may cause people to make decisions they would not make in other circumstances. Osborne noted that recent scams that have surfaced involve the economic stimulus, claims about products marketed as coronavirus treatments,

or the promise of services related to the virus in an attempt to distract someone in order to commit theft or another property crime. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has published a long list of frauds that have sprung up around See Preventing Scams pg 3

As part of its COVID-19 response, the York County Food Bank held a pop-up drive-through food distribution on May 16 at the John Wright Restaurant in Wrightsville. The event was made possible with the support of the John Wright Restaurant, MidAtlantic Industrial Equipment, Living Word Community Church, and the Eastern York Food Pantry. Recipients received a free emergency food box containing shelf-stable items like peanut butter, rice, and canned tuna, as well as fresh and frozen items including meat, produce, and dairy products. Each household received enough food to feed a family of four for approximately four to five days. Currently, the Eastern York Food Pantry is open by appointment on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons for those in need of food. COVID-19 and good strategies for avoiding them at www.justice.gov/coronavirus/combattingfraud. “Families can help (loved ones) see that the scammers are there en force and that coronavirus is now a new trigger to alarm potential scam targets,” Osborne said. “Warn them to get any information about ‘medical breakthroughs’ from either the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Daily updates get posted with truthful information on these sites.” Osborne offered four tips that can be useful in protecting an individual from a scam. -Never accept an online offer for a coronavirus vaccine. “We don’t have one,

cure, or vaccine against the coronavirus. “The best families can do is keep our aging loved ones informed by alerting them to what is a present danger,” Osborne advised. If someone believes they or a loved one is a victim of a scam, they should contact their local police department or the PSP, if they live in an area covered by the state police, using the respective agency’s nonemergency number. The PSP nonemergency number is 717-299-7650, and Lancaster County Radio may be reached at 717-6641180. The latter will route phone calls to the appropriate police department. Osborne stressed that 911 should be called only in the case of an emergency.

of flowers, and our logo and sign is there,” said Cole, who noted that she is continually amazed at how the siblings flock to the garden during the picnic. “There’s pizza, ice cream, and roller coasters, and these (siblings) stop in the middle of this super fun day to plant a flower,” she said. “It has been the most meaningful part of our picnic.” To give bereaved mothers and their families an opportunity to join together in a similar and safe way, Sweet Pea created a virtual flower garden. “I thought we should try to create a sense of community and salvage that flower piece,” said Cole, who noted that families do not forget the feeling of losing a child. She added that because of the quarantine, the spring of 2020 may have been even more difficult for those who lost a child. “Parents who (have lost a child) are already feeling isolated, and then they come to Mother’s Day,” explained Cole. “The isolation was really piling up this year.” The virtual flower garden, which can be reached on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtags #stillamothergarden and #sweetpeaproject, acknowledges bereaved mothers and honors the children they love and miss. “We are still their mothers. That deserves to be

remembered and celebrated,” wrote Cole in an invitation to mothers to take part. Those who participated posted a photograph of a flower on Facebook or Instagram along with the child’s name and the hashtags. Those wishing to post flowers may continue to do so. Cole recalled the struggles she endured facing her first Mother’s Day after losing her daughter. “When you lose a child, you feel like you’re the only one who ever suffered through this,” she said. “(It can be beneficial to have) a place you can scroll through quietly without having to (leave your home), and yet know you are part of something … you’re not alone.” “It gives a sense of unity,” Cole continued. “Even though we didn’t join together and put the flowers in the ground the way we usually do, it’s pretty nice to have some beautiful pictures to look at online.” Cole said she is looking forward to scheduling more Sweet Pea events in the fall, but in the meantime, she is glad the virtual flower garden is available for bereaved family members, especially as Father’s Day approaches. The Giant Company recently announced that more than 100 businesses were recipients of funds through its emergency grant program. Announced in partnership with Team Pennsylvania, The Giant Company originally designated $250,000 for the program, but due to the overwhelming response, the company decided to double the amount of funding available to $500,000. In all, the company is awarding 110 grants to help support small businesses in Pennsylvania’s food supply chain impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. More than 500 applications were received during the two-week application period, with more than 60 in the first 24 hours. The 110 recipients span the entire commonwealth and represent multiple areas of the food supply chain, including dairy farms; beef, pork and poultry farms; processors; orchards; produce farms; apiaries; maple syrup producers; artisan cheesemakers; craft breweries, winemakers and cider producers; specialty yogurt, snack, sauce and condiment manufacturers; and a coffee roastery and confectioner. In addition, with grants ranging from $2,500 up to $15,000, 55% of grants awarded are going to PA Preferred companies and businesses with and special designations account for more than half of the grants awarded. These designations include veteranowned, woman-owned, minority-owned, USDA defined beginner rancher/farmer, USDA defined socially disadvantaged and limited resource farmer. The following local small businesses are the recipients of an emergency grant from The Giant Company: Brown’s Orchards & Farm Market, Loganville; Brubaker Farms, Mount Joy; Caputo Brother’s Creamery, See Grants pg 8

Red Accordion Studios To Livestream Musical

QUALITY Driveway Seal Coating • For Homes, Churches and Businesses • Material Hand-Applied (owner on every job) • Line Striping/ Hot Rubber Crack Filling

Red Accordion Studios will present an online musical, adapted to be rehearsed and performed entirely remotely. “The Big One-Oh! Online Edition,” with music by Doug Besterman, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and libretto by Timothy Allen McDonald, will have six performances. The show will be livestreamed at 7 p.m. on Fridays, June 12 and 19, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, June 13 and 20.

The show was adapted from a full-length theater for young audiences show, which was adapted from a children’s book of the same name. In the musical, a friendless boy decides to throw a 10th birthday party for himself, featuring a “House of Horrors” theme. This 20-minute Zoomsical features a cast of 20 actors, ranging from age 8 to adults. Many of the actors are local children from Hempfield,

Penn Manor, and various other school districts, including some in Lebanon and York. However, actress Reagan McCartney, who plays Swampy, joins from Arkansas, and college student Seth Jerabek, who plays Zombie King, is currently in Ohio. The cast uses Zoom to rehearse. Singing and dancing together is a challenge, so the big song and dance numbers will be prerecorded.
