“Insta-Worthy Moments”

Eastern York students reminded to love one another

When the members of the Class of 2023 graduated from Eastern York High School on May 31, the Golden Knights present heard speeches from three of their peersvaledictorian Jessica Lynn Rose, salutatorian Daniel Graham Slater and senior class president Cameron Elizabeth Wolf.

Jessica is the daughter of John and Sherry Rose of Hellam. At Eastern York, she was an executive officer of Student Council and served as president of the Interact Club. She also competed in Science Olympiad, played soccer and managed the football and basketball teams. She plans to attend Wake Forest University to

major in health and exercise science and biology on the pre-med track. Jessica’s speech talked about taking the life lessons learned in high school and applying them to the future. “Every class mattered,” she said, “but there was much more to be learned than just the content.” She advised her fellow graduates to acknowledge their support systems. “Be grateful for the people throughout your life who have helped you get to where you are,” she remarked. “Strive to do your best, but only compare yourself to your past self.”

Daniel is the son of Michael and Maggie Slater and the brother of Isabella Slater of Wrightsville. His activities during high school included serving as National Honor Society

“Insta-Worthy

Moments” was the theme of speeches delivered at Columbia High School’s Class of 2023 graduation. The ceremony took place on June 1 at the high school. Kenny Tran was named valedictorian.

“We had open audition tryouts for students who wanted to speak,” explained teacher Linda Eckman Wissler. “We asked them to prepare a one- to two-minute speech, and we selected three students to speak.”

The speakers were Ciara Ramos, Mercyangelis Gonzalez Morillo and salutatorian Mallory Conroy.

Ciara is the daughter of Michelle Ramos of Columbia and Julio Ramos. She said she was hesitant

initially about speaking, but she’s glad she tried out. “Something just called me to do it,” she recalled. “I said I’d take a chance, and I did.” Her speech focused on what the various moments throughout high school meant to her and her classmates and all of the things the Class of 2023 has gone through. At Columbia, Ciara was active in the theater program. She plans to attend HACC, Central Pennylvania’s Community College for two years before transferring to a university.

Mercyangelis is the daughter of Jose Rosado and Mercybel Morillo of Columbia. She was a member of the volleyball team at Columbia and plans to play volleyball for Penn State University. “My speech talked about the situations that made me

the person who I am today,” she stated. “I talked about how I moved here from Puerto Rico without knowing any English when I was 12.”

Mallory is the daughter of Michael and April Conroy of Columbia. She took the theme of “Insta-Worthy Moments” to heart in her speech, noting, “I specifically wanted to talk about the discrepancy in social media between what you see and what is actually going on behind the scenes.” She plans to attend Shippensburg University and major in psychology. At Columbia, she participaticed on the track and cross-country teams, was a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council, served as yearbook editor and was a class officer for all four years.

“Riverfest commemorates the involvement the river towns of Columbia and Wrightsville had in the Civil War,” said Sophia Vayansky, Columbia Crossing River Trails Center program coordinator. “It’s a really nice opportunity for us to connect to that larger, national story, but also connect to and feature local stories.”

Riverfest will be held from Friday, June 23, through Sunday, June 25. Activities will take place throughout Columbia, Wrightsville and Marietta, all with the goal of

highlighting the 160th anniversary of the burning of the bridge over the Susquehanna River during the Civil War.

The weekend will be full of heritage walks, talks, trolley tours and more. “We have an architectural tour premiering this year, and that’s going to focus on all of the different styles of buildings you’ll find in Columbia,” Vayansky noted. Hosted by the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, architectural tours will run all three days and will leave from the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St.

Marietta Garden Tour will highlight beauty

There are treasures hiding in the backyards of Marietta, and you’ll have the chance to explore them during the Marietta Garden Tour. The tour will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 25. It will be held rain or shine.

“Driving by the houses in Marietta, you’d never believe what’s behind those homes,” said Linda Mylin Ross, whose home will be on the tour. “Most of the lots are very deep, and the average person doesn’t see what’s there. You’ll get a chance on this tour to see things you would never see otherwise.”

Eight gardens will be highlighted on the self-guided tour. “This year, it’s spread out from the east end of Marietta to the middle, to the square,” said Karen Sullivan, tour chair. “It’s walkable for anyone who wants to do that,

but it’s also drivable, and we have designated areas for parking.”

Although the tour is only one day, finding the gardens is a yearlong project for Sullivan. “I drive up and down the alleys all year, but especially in the spring and the summer, looking for prospective gardens,” she stated.

The results of her efforts can be seen in the unique gardens featured each year. Describing her own garden, Mylin Ross noted, “It could be classified as mainly a shade garden, with lots of large, mature trees and shrubs and little pathways, plus a couple of surprises.”

Other highlights include magnolia trees, climbing hydrangea, fountains, ponds and garden gates. “This year, the majority of the gardens are at historic homes, and each of those historic homes is unique to Marietta,” said

Lauralee Baker, whose own home on the tour was built in 1850. “Every one of the homes has different architecture as well.”

Along with the tour, a pork barbecue dinner will be available to purchase from 11 a.m. until sold out at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. The meal will include a pulled pork sandwich, chips, baked beans, slaw, a dessert and a drink.

Linda Ferich, a Pennsylvania Master Naturalist from the Lancaster Conservancy, will present two seminars on native plants at the Community House during the tour.

Ferich’s presentations will be held at 1 and 3 p.m., and admission is included with a tour ticket. The First National Bank and Mulberry Thrill will also be open at 100 W. Market St. for tours and refreshments during the garden tour. Proceeds from the garden tour and barbecue will benefit the Marietta Community House, a historic property now used by nonprofits and for private functions such as weddings. Work is underway to paint the exterior of the building, and funds from the tour will help pay for painting of the building’s east

Also new this year, bus tours will be offered in Wrightsville, featuring actors portraying notable characters from the town’s Civil War history. Additional tours will include paddling on the river, rides on the Chief Uncas river boat, an iron industryfocused tour and exploration of the Burning of the Bridge diorama in Wrightsville. A river recreation expo will be held at Columbia River Park from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 24, and a Riverfest music street fair will run from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday along Front Street in Marietta.

Most of the tours require preregistration, and early sign-up is encouraged, said Megan Salvatore, visitor services representative for Columbia Crossing. “Last year, we sold out of all of our heritage tours, so we made a

huge effort to bulk it up and provide more activities this year,” she noted. “We added more activities for kids … to make it fun for the whole family.” Kids’ activities will include Bucket Brigade Races with prizes on Saturday from 10:15 to 11 a.m. at Columbia River Park.

“There are so many things happening with Riverfest and so many things people have yet to discover in our river towns,” Salvatore stated. “We want to invite people to rediscover the area or discover it

for the first time.”

Vayansky emphasized that although history is a big part of Riverfest, the weekend incorporates both education and fun. “We will be having music, paddle tours, kids’ activities and lots more,” she said. “Even though it’s all centered around commemorating a historic event, it’s also an opportunity to have some summertime fun.”

president and yearbook club secretary and treasurer. Outside of school, he created a youth boxing class and cofounded the Elizabethtown Fitness and Performance Gardening Club. His postgraduation plans include attending Villanova University, with the goal of earning a master’s degree in electrical engineering.

“The purpose of my speech was not to preach to my classmates how to be successful,” Daniel said. “Instead, I opted to encourage them to embrace some core values. ... I advised them to always contribute their utmost effort to everything they do, even if that means facing great difficulty or failure.”

As for advice for his peers, Daniel remarked, “A person’s social network is one of his or her greatest tools in life, and networks can only be built

vative and unique social and recreational programs in an atmosphere of acceptance that embraces the child and family. Among Aaron’s Acres’ programs is a summer camp program for people ages 5 to 21.

A fast-growing female collective giving group with a focus on the Lancaster County region, Lancaster County Women for Good seeks to help local women build connections and enrich their professional and personal lives while doing good for the greater community. The group’s more than 270 members come together once every quarter to network, donate, learn about local nonprofits, and vote on which ones to support together. upon strong connections that must start somewhere. On that note, always seize a good opportunity when you see one. Work extremely hard for what you want, and for what you know will help elevate others, but be patient for the results. Good things come to those who wait ... while working hard.”

Cameron, the daughter of Lucas and Tricia Wolf of Hellam, was a member of the varsity soccer and football teams and participated in both the National Honor Society and Student Council. “My speech was about how we need to go out into the world and love one another,” she said. She plans to attend Lancaster Bible College and major in business administration and biblical studies. Her advice for her classmates is simple: “to love one another like Jesus loves us.”

The Junior League of Lancaster (JLL) has announced the two winners of this year’s 2023 Deborah P. Altman Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award: Lauren Leister, an 18-year-old graduating senior from Warwick High School, and Caleb Miller, an 18-yearold graduating senior from Donegal High School. Leister and Miller each received a $1,500 scholarship prize, of which a $300 contribution will be donated by JLL to a charity of each student’s choice. Leister’s chosen charity is Four Diamonds, and Miller selected the Old Line Youth Livestock Foundation.

Leister’s commitment to volunteerism has been illustrated throughout her high school career. She participated in and served as the chairperson of UNITE for MiniTHON Club. Leister has been an active member of the Lititz Leo Club, and she was also appointed to the National Honor Society (NHS), where she was elected as secretary and was involved in fundraisers for local nonprofit organizations.

Miller’s scholastic accomplishments have included his induction into the NHS, National Math Honor Society,

and Key Club. He has also been involved in 4-H, undertaking a project to install cattle gates at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds. He has been a five-year volunteer with the Marietta Fireworks Team. Named a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Junior Committee, Miller was recently selected as one of 12 youths from Pennsylvania to assist with ensuring the success of the Farm Show.

The annual award is named in honor of Deborah P. Altman, a past president of the Junior League of Lancaster, whose life exemplified a commitment to volunteering, a love of children, and service to the community. The purpose of the award is to recognize young people who demonstrate an exceptional interest and involvement in volunteerism as well as inspiring their peers to volunteer in their communities. Since the award was established in 1984, more than $48,800 has been awarded to outstanding youths in Lancaster County.
