Columbia Students Climb To The Top Spotlight On Eastern York’s Class Of 2021 BY CATHY MOLITORIS
or Columbia High School’s Class of 2021, Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” served as the perfect choice for class song, said class president Emma Grove. “We felt that the lyrics of this song represent the journey we’ve been through the last 13 years,” she said, speaking at the graduation ceremony on June 4. She added that the lyrics “I can almost see it, that dream I’m dreaming” spoke to her and her
F
career goals, which include becoming a pediatric emergency physician. “Throughout high school, we have faced a lot of adversity,” she said. “But we are strong. We are from Columbia.” Grove, one of 68 students who participated in the ceremony held in the school’s auditorium, also spoke about the importance of mental health. She quoted the song’s lyrics “The struggles I’m facing, the chances I’m taking, sometimes might knock me down, but no, I’m not breaking.” “I was
knocked down a lot,” she said. “There were many nights I laid awake, crying, hoping I was good enough. Hoping I would be able to make it to the next mountain.” She said she often worried she would break before being diagnosed with depression and anxiety. “There is a stigma around mental health,” she told the audience. “I was worried I would be viewed as weak. … I am and always will be Emma Grove. A diagnosis does not define you. … The struggles we face do not define us.”

he Eastern York High School Class of 2021 graduated on June 8 at the school’s football stadium. Of the 154 graduates, Justin Ranker was named valedictorian and Taralyn Andes was named salutatorian. A baccalaureate service was held on June 7 at Christ United Methodist Church, Yorkana. To celebrate graduation,
T
members of the Class of 2021 paid a visit to younger students in the district. “The seniors dressed in their graduation regalia and participated in an outside parade around the school buildings at Eastern York Middle School, Canadochly Elementary, Kreutz Creek Elementary and Wrightsville Elementary,” said Terry Anne Doutrich, senior class adviser and commencement co-adviser. “It was an exciting time for the seniors
to revisit their elementary schools and have an opportunity to have an impact on future generations.” Speakers at the graduation ceremony included Joseph Mancuso, superintendent of Eastern York School District, as well as high school principal Timothy Mitzel and school board president Jason Malone. Student speakers were Ranker, Andes and class president Nickolaus Dilley.

Mrs. Snyder, married to pastor Samuel Snyder, was also branch secretary of the United Evangelical Church Conference’s Women’s Missionary Society. The new booklet includes photographs, comments on current locations, dates for some of the references and corrections to some misinformation in the 1921 article. Topics of the new booklet include how Hallam was named, industries, business establishments, railroad station activity, the schoolhouse, churches, leaders of the community, older residents, physicians, the tannery and the trolley. Katina Snyder, who worked on the project, noted that many properties mentioned in Mrs. Snyder’s article are still standing, although they may currently

Lighting Up The Sky In Marietta Ivey will perform at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted upon entrance to the parking lot, and all proceeds will go to Marietta Fireworks. Schatz said the fireworks display will be bigger and better than ever this year, noting that last year’s show opened with 13 “cakes” or boxes containing hundreds of firework shells. “It looked so incredible,” he said. “I’m planning on doing even more cakes this
year. Last year we had the biggest finale I’ve ever seen in a show. It was two minutes and 21 seconds, and that length is just unheard of. Wait ’til you see what we have in store for this year.” For more information on Marietta Fireworks, to donate or to watch a livestream of the event, search for “Marietta Fireworks” on Facebook. Gary Schatz likes to blow things up, and the Marietta community can thank him for it. Schatz, a certified pyrotechnician, is the driving force behind Marietta Fireworks, a nonprofit organization that puts on an annual fireworks show. This year’s display will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, in War Memorial Park, 344 E. Walnut St. The rain date for the event is Sunday, July 4. “Fireworks have been a passion of mine since the early ’80s,” said Schatz. “I like doing the layout and the design of the show.” Marietta had a fireworks show for years, but eventually the organizers of the event were no longer able to put on the display. In 2017, after two years without fireworks in Marietta, Schatz came on board. The first fireworks show under his direction happened in 2018. “I jumped in and was like, ‘We can do this. We can get this done,’” he recalled, noting that he handles fundraising for the fireworks and also recruits people to help with
the event. “I don’t give up.” Still, passion alone isn’t enough to put on a successful show. It takes a lot of hard work, Schatz emphasized. “It’s so expensive to do a good fireworks show, and it’s so indepth in terms of planning,” he stated. “I work on this year-round, from getting the proper permits to fundraising to getting people on board to help with our committee.” Marietta Fireworks is run entirely by volunteers. Most of the fundraising comes from donation request letters and Facebook posts. “We’ve gotten a really great response from the community,” Schatz noted. “If it wasn’t for individuals, businesses and organizations supporting us, it wouldn’t happen.” Before the fireworks begin, Community Bible Church will host a variety of familyfriendly activities beginning at 5 p.m. The church, located at 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, makes a perfect spot for viewing the fireworks, Schatz said. Festivities at the church include will food trucks, a barrel train for children, yard games and a bounce house. Juggler Chris

Eastern York from pg 1 Dilley spoke of the importance of making your own decisions. He played baseball for three years at Eastern York and also participated in this year’s spring musical. He will attend Elon University to study psychology. Doutrich noted the accomplishments of the Class of 2021, adding that 42% of students will be going into four-year programs, 10% will be entering two-year programs and 6% will be joining the military. While last year’s graduation ceremony was very different due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year offered a chance for a return to normalcy for the seniors. “For the Class of 2021, with the CDC guidelines less restricted near the end of the school year, this year seniors (were) able to have a full-fledged outside graduation program,” Doutrich said.

It really brings people together.” Lehman has been overseeing the Fourth of July activities since the early 1970s, but his participation goes back even further. “I used to ride my bike in the bike contest in the 1950s,” he recalled. Now 75 years old, he’s looking to find someone to take over his duties. “I’m hoping to be stepping down this year,” he explained. “It’s time for somebody else to step up and take over. I have enjoyed doing this, but it’s time for a change.” For more information on the Wrightsville Fourth of July Celebration or to volunteer, contact Lehman at 717252-1856.

Columbia from pg 1 Breanna Murphy, class valedictorian, said one line in particular from “The Climb” stood out to her: “Lost with no direction, my faith is shaking.” She noted that she lost her grandmother this past year and that she relied on her faith to get her through a tough year. “As we end the climb up one mountain, there will be another mountain to climb on the other side,” she stated. “No matter your plans - college, gap year, workforce or the military - we did this. We climbed the past 13 years to get on this stage.” Salutatorian Tanner Ness spoke about the uncertainty of the future and all of the unanswered questions in his life. “It is not the start or the end, but our journey through life that really matters,” he said. “Our
journey is what we should all care about. We should hold on to our memories, the good, the bad and the sad.” Superintendent Ashley Rizzo addressed the Class of 2021 and noted specific achievements of its members, including the boys’ basketball team’s section championship for the second year in a row. “You, the Class of 2021, rose above the challenges and persevered,” she said. Principal Robert Kedney reminded the class that the challenges of the past year only helped to make the students stronger. “You have overcome a tremendous amount of adversity to get to this point,” he stated. “Every experience in life is a chance for you to learn and grow.”
