When a child walks into Wrightsville Presbyterian Church, not only can she pick up a free lunch, but she can also find fun and fellowship. The church, located at 205 N. Second St., offers the Summer Food Service Program weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program is coordinated through

ill up on food and fun when Wrightsville celebrates the Fourth of July. The festivities will be held on Monday, July 5, beginning with a chicken barbecue hosted by the Rotary Club of Eastern York County. The barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wrightsville Hope United Methodist Church, 404 Hellam St. Preorders are encouraged and may be made by calling 717-252-1116 or 717-252-1856. Limited delivery will also be available and can be arranged by calling 717-968-0679. In past years, the Wrightsville Fourth of July Celebration has been a daylong event, but the majority of the activities are canceled this year due to the pandemic, said Phil Lehman, chair of the committee. “ We hope to bring them back next year,” he said of
He encouraged everyone to come out to Wrightsville for the festivities. “It’s a nice community day,” he stated. “It’s a time for neighbors to get together and have fun, have some good conversations. It really brings people together.” Lehman has been overseeing the Fourth of July activities since the early 1970s, but his participation goes back even further. “I used to ride my bike in the bike contest in the 1950s,” he recalled. Now 75 years old, he’s looking to find someone to take over his duties. “I’m hoping to be stepping down this year,” he explained. “It’s time for somebody else to step up and take over. I have enjoyed doing this, but it’s time for a change.” For more information on the Wrightsville Fourth of July Celebration or to volunteer, contact Lehman at 717-252-1856.

The co-owner of Mixed Medley, a discount retail store in Columbia, wanted to support other businesses, individuals and nonprofits in her community. “I thought I could try and raise some money to help people, especially because so many people are struggling after this past year,” she stated. activities that included a baby contest, bike show, pet contest and basketball shoot. “But for this year, we’re still doing food and music and, of course, fireworks.” Evening festivities will begin at 6 p.m. at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville. The Rotary Club will sell french fries and funnel cakes, and Wrightsville Fire and Rescue Company 41 will sell sandwiches and beverages. Live music will begin at 6:30 p.m. “We’ll have the Twin Rose Community Band performing, and they’ll play until about 9 p.m. or dusk,” Lehman said. The fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. Proceeds from the Fourth of July events will benefit projects of the Rotary Club. “We support a lot of community groups and organizations,” Lehman said. “Eastern York School District is a big recipient of our funds.”
Hands Across the Street at Columbia Presbyterian Church. “Everything is set up to be graband-go, but they are welcome to stay and eat here. We provide plenty of space for them,” said pastor Jesse North. “When it’s really hot out, we provide an opportunity for the kids to come in off the streets and into the air conditioning, have lunch and hang out.” Ilean Ball, who oversees the program with Rick Schmidt, noted that anywhere from 60 to 90 children could be served on a typical day. This year, in addition to the food, participants are enjoying spending time with Stephen Wisler, an Elizabethtown College student who is interning with the program. “I love kids. This is the best job I’ve ever had,” stated Wisler, who grew up in Wrightsville Presbyterian. “I feel like I’m making a difference, and I’m serving kids who really need this.”

Marietta had a fireworks show for years, but eventually the organizers of the event were no longer able to put on the display. In 2017, after two years without fireworks in Marietta, Schatz came on board. The first fireworks show under his direction happened in 2018. “I jumped in and was like, ‘We can do this. We can get this done,’” he recalled, noting that he handles fundraising for the fireworks and also recruits people to help with the event. “I don’t give up.” Still, passion alone isn’t enough to put on a successful show. It takes a lot of hard work, Schatz emphasized. “It’s so expensive to do a good fireworks show, and it’s so in-depth in terms of planning,” he stated. “I work on this year-round, from getting the proper permits to fundraising to getting people on board to help with our committee.” Marietta Fireworks is run entirely by volunteers. Most of the fundraising comes from donation request letters and Facebook posts. “We’ve gotten a really great response from the community,” Schatz noted. “If it wasn’t for individuals, businesses and organizations supporting us, it wouldn’t happen.” Before the fireworks
begin, Community Bible Church will host a variety of family-friendly activities beginning at 5 p.m. The church, located at 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, makes a perfect spot for viewing the fireworks, Schatz said. Festivities at the church include will food trucks, a barrel train for children, yard games and a bounce house. Juggler Chris Ivey will perform at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted upon entrance to the parking lot, and all proceeds will go to Marietta Fireworks. Schatz said the fireworks display will be bigger and better than ever this year, noting that last year’s show opened with 13 “cakes” or boxes containing hundreds of firework shells. “It looked so incredible,” he said. “I’m planning on doing even more cakes this year. Last year we had the biggest finale I’ve ever seen in a show. It was two minutes and 21 seconds, and that length is just unheard of. Wait ’til you see what we have in store for this year.” For more information on Marietta Fireworks, to donate or to watch a livestream of the event, search for “Marietta Fireworks” on Facebook. Donations are also accepted by PayPal.

Full from pg 1 Although Wisler is only at the program on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, he’s making an impact, said Ball, adding, “After his first day here, the kids came in the next day asking for Stephen. He’s really reaching every kid on their level.” Wisler might spend time playing foosball with the children, building with Legos or even just doodling. “I love to draw pictures with the kids, and they love it,” he said. “I can cater to their interests. … I try to do things that engage their fine motor skills. I also try to offer activities that are diversified to keep their attention and get their brains going.” North said the food program offers a way for the church to connect with its community. “We think the kingdom of God is about serving other people,” he remarked. “The church
ought to be a place that, if it closed today, people would realize something is missing. We should be an integral part of the community. This program is a way we can meet a need.” The program will run through August, until school starts again, and it’s open to any school-age children in the community. “To a kid who is unsure about coming through the doors, I would say that this is a great place for anyone looking to have fun in an uplifting, positive environment,” Wisler stated. “We guarantee you’ll be walking away with a full belly and a smile.” The entrance to the Summer Food Service Program is located at the rear of the church, off of Centre Alley. The church holds a Sunday worship service at 10 a.m. For more information on Wrightsville Presbyterian Church, visit www.wpcpa.org.

Ketchup On The Fun: Washington Boro Tomato Festival When the Goodwill Fire Company No. 1 merged with three other Manor Township fire companies to become Blue Rock Fire Rescue (BRFR) in 2011, the Blue Rock Support Group (BRSG) was created. As an auxiliary to the new entity, BRSG coordinates Blue Rock apparel for BRFR members, hosts annual banquets, and contributes to the purchases of new apparatus. It also hosts the annual Washington Boro Tomato Festival.
Last year’s event morphed into a food truck festival due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year’s Tomato Festival will return to its true form when it is held on Saturdays, July 10 and 17, from 3 to 9 p.m. The rain-or-shine event will take place at the Washington Boro Community Park, 2010 River Road. Stands will begin serving food at 3 p.m., two hours before the carnival games and live music will kick off. For the first time, Barnett’s Farm Market and Greenhouse

will supply the tomatoes. Folks traditionally queue up for tomato sandwiches and, in recent years, BLTs. In 2017, the BRSG sold 3,000 bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches during the two days of the festival. In addition to tomato sandwiches, there will be hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue, soft-serve ice cream, corn soup, fruit, candy, and more. On July 10, the bands Border Line and Relics will perform songs from many genres, and two bluegrass bands, Hammer Creek and Barley & Steele, will perform on July 17. There will be opportunities to enter a drawing for a Vizio 50-inch LED smart television, a Samsung Chromebook laptop, a Fitbit, or $100 cash prizes. “I’m looking forward to people coming out to enjoy the big community event and the food,” said BRSG member Richard Schock. Proceeds from the festival will benefit BRFR. Additional help is needed to make the Tomato Festival a success.

some of the references and corrections to some misinformation in the 1921 article. Topics of the new booklet include how Hallam was named, industries, business establishments, railroad station activity, the schoolhouse, churches, leaders of the community, older residents, physicians, the tannery and the trolley. Katina Snyder, who worked on the project, noted that many properties mentioned in Mrs. Snyder’s article are still standing, although they may currently have a different purpose. Jeffrey Clinton did the layout and computer enhancement for the booklet, in addition to including some never-before-seen photographs from his private collection.

The Kreutz Creek Valley Preservation Society (KCVPS) presented a copy of its recently printed booklet “Hallam in 1921 - A Glimpse of the Past” to the Hallam Borough Council on May 10 to commemorate the past 100 years of Hallam’s history. In creating the booklet, KCVPS compared the Hallam of today to the Hallam of 1921, as described in an article written that year by Mrs. S. A. Snyder, a newspaper correspondent. Mrs. Snyder, married to pastor Samuel Snyder, was also branch secretary of the United Evangelical Church Conference’s Women’s Missionary Society. The new booklet includes photographs, comments on current locations, dates for

She does homemade skin care (products). We’ll have Scentsy and Paparazzi vendors.” The animal shelter will have a table set up as well, with merchandise including glassware and T-shirts for sale. “I wanted to do this event to raise awareness of some of the people in our community who are running their own businesses, while also letting people know about the nonprofits that are out there who need support,” Hadaway said. “It’s going to be a fun community day.” Space is still available for participants, she noted. The event will be held at the shelter, 265 S. 10th St., from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 10. “This is my first time organizing something like this,” she said. “I wasn’t sure how it was going to go, but it’s coming together.” Hadaway’s business is located across the street from the shelter, and she is a frequent visitor to the nonprofit. “I have met quite a few of the volunteers who work there, and they are wonderful,” she remarked. “I thought, ‘How can I help this place?’ and then I realized there are so many people in the community I’d like to help.” Vendors at the flea market are charged a fee to rent their space for the day, with proceeds benefiting the shelter. LOHF (Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation) has approved funding to five programs meeting youths and child behavioral health needs in Lancaster County. These programs seek to improve the mental well-being of youth and children, especially those who may not otherwise get the support they need. Bench Mark Program Open Gym was awarded $10,000. The mentors at Bench Mark Program aim to use exercise, academics, and career counseling to help atrisk youths have a successful future. Although life on the streets is temporary, the mentors commit to students’ well-being for as long as needed.
Mom’s House - Positive Behavioral Health Intervention and Support Services was awarded $15,800. Mom’s House is open to all singleparent students enrolled in school full time. The organization serves young females trying to earn a GED diploma, high school diploma, or college degree. Children receive a comprehensive early childhood curriculum designed for child development - including health, resiliency, social competence, and language - and kindergarten readiness. Patients R Waiting - Diversifying Doulas Initiative received a $12,000 grant. This program addresses health disparities through workforce
development in various aspects of care. The program connects with the community through its doula program, a health equity book club, and medical activism through COVID-19 vaccination events and more. It also serves students and is currently helping 12 students with test preparation, resume, and personal statement workshops and graduate school application strategy. Advoz - Diversifying Restorative Justice was awarded $10,000. Advoz provides services for youths in the restorative justice program by partnering with the Office of Juvenile Probation. Trained facilitators work with victims and offenders in vic-
tim-offender conferencing, so youths can take responsibility for their actions through a meeting with the victim. They can learn how to make amends and move on from what has happened. Horizons at Lancaster Country Day School - School Counselor was awarded $7,000. This summer program is designed to stop learning loss for low-income public school children. The program offers a structured environment with an academic focus, nurturing staff, and individualized attention. Additional funds will be available in the fall. serving injured clients while adhering to COVID-19 and post-pandemic safety measures. The new office offers ample space to accommodate physically distanced meetings, an air purification system and enhanced professional CDCrecommended cleaning and sterilization procedures to ensure that the legal staff and clients remain safe even after the pandemic ends. Rankin & Gregory opened its first office, in Rohrerstown at 2173 Embassy Drive, Lancaster, in January 2014. The legal team at Rankin & Gregory will also continue to meet with clients at its former headquarters office on Embassy Drive as well as its offices at 342 E. Main St., Leola, which opened in
2015, and 357 Locust St., Suite 100, Columbia, which opened in 2019, shortly before the pandemic caused businesses to temporarily serve clients through fullyonline services. The 10,000-square-foot Lititz Pike building underwent a transformation from its previous use by a clothing store. This location houses an accessible reception area, 15 offices, three conference rooms, three bathrooms, a copy center and a kitchenette staff room. Calabrese Good Architects (CGA) designed the project and served as general contractor. Visitors will experience special design touches upon entering the new Lititz Pike office. The reception area features a floor-to-ceiling wood-
en wall, a glass-walled interior showcasing a centralized conference room and a traditional iron chandelier. Pennsylvanian artisan Bradlyn Zimmerman, owner of The Ole Wood Shack in Shippensburg, was involved in the renovation project. Zimmerman custom-crafted the new office’s main conference room table and credenza with live-edge kiln-dried slabs of wood using wood from locally-sourced black walnut trees. It is the little acts of kindness that make a world of difference in the lives of our residents. Some of the little acts of kindness that our staff do for our residents include.... • Delivering the newspapers to the residents so that they can read the newspaper while they enjoy breakfast in bed. • Driving a resident to a medical appointment and taking the long way home in order to go past the neighborhood where he lived as a child and listening to him describe how the area used to look. • Taking the time to iron a resident’s pair of slacks just like the way she used to iron them for herself.
Our staff make it their mission to do those little things for our residents. Please call Lisa or Rebecca at 717-755-7600 if you would like more information about the Personal Care Services and Memory Care Services that are available at The Brunswick at Longstown.

The VBS programs will be held during the weeks of Monday to Friday, July 12 to 16, and Monday to Friday, July 19 to 23. Register a child at the aforementioned website. Camp Good News allows children ages 6 to 12 to attend a week of daylong camp at a local church where they will hear Bible lessons and a missions story, learn Bible verses, take part in daily devotions, make a
craft, sing songs and play games. Camp Good News runs on Mondays through Fridays for six hours each day. Families are invited to a Friday picnic where the campers put on a short program, exhibiting what they have learned throughout the week.
