EYHS Celebrates Class Of 2020 Graduation festivities for the Class of 2020 at Eastern York High School (EYHS) began on May 26 and concluded one month later. With York County in the yellow phase of reopening at the

end of the school year, an in-person commencement was unable to take place when originally scheduled. With the county moving to green in midJune, however, a live event was slated for the school’s stadium on June 26. “The rain date is 10 a.m. the next

morning, but right now, the forecast is beautiful,” EYHS principal Tim Mitzel said on June 23. Mitzel reported that beginning on May 26, the graduating seniors were filmed in individual diploma presentations in the EYHS performing arts center.

the two organizations. Together they will build on a foundation of 75 years of service in housing advocacy and financial empowerment to area residents. “With the affordable housing crisis in the backdrop, we approached the important question of merging two strong organizations,” said Mike McKenna, Tabor Community Services president. Rick Jackson, LHOP board chair, noted that the organizations were different in origin, but similar in mission. “The vision and goals of our two organizations are indeed shared,” he said. “We also share ... values including empowerment, innovation, and accountability.” See Tabor And LHOP pg 2

Tabor And LHOP - Merging For Good

The students scheduled appointments when they could hear their names being called, walk across the stage, and receive diploma covers from their parents, caregivers, or guardians. Graduation speakers were also recorded giving their speeches. The completed video will be ready by Friday, July 17, Mitzel said. The actual diplomas were presented on June 3, which was the last day of the school year. EYHS administration and commencement advisers conducted a drive-through distribution in an event livestreamed on YouTube. That evening, the graduates gathered via Google Meet and their families watched via a separate link while Eastern York School District officials offered words of encouragement and conducted a virtual conferring of diplomas, officially certifying the seniors as graduates. Mitzel noted that a formal program was put together to normalize the event. See EYHS pg 2

When York County entered the green phase of reopening, planning for the June 26 ceremony began in earnest. The event was set in the stadium, where the spectators could be socially distanced, and only a limited number of admission tickets were available. “We’re doing our best to follow CDC guidelines and still provide our seniors with a quality and solemn program,” Mitzel commented during the planning process. Five speeches were planned for the ceremony, including those from class president Alexandria Willich, valedictorian Tiffany Sarver, and salutatorian Timothy Leaman. Then, the names of all 160 members of the Class of 2020 were read aloud, and those in attendance crossed the stage to be recognized. A total of 110 graduates

confirmed that they would be there. Mitzel suggested that the remaining individuals may have already reported to military bases or started college or have other summer commitments. “(For the Class of 2020), this will be their closure to the school year. They get to see each other (one last time),” Mitzel said. The ceremony was livestreamed on YouTube, and a link to the recording was slated to be placed on all of the district’s webpages. Mitzel praised the Class of 2020 for its patience. “They were appreciative of communications and followed regulations,” Mitzel commented. “They responded with character and dignity.” For more information about EYHS and to watch the recorded commencement, readers may visit www.easternyork.com.

stable housing after a period of homelessness, protecting their rights under the Fair Housing Act, (and helping them in) avoiding evictions and foreclosure, or buying their first home,” said Stacks. Stacks added that the merger will allow the organization to place “greater emphasis on prevention of homelessness, new loan products, and expanded financial empowerment services.” “We will assess where gaps exist,” explained Stacks, who noted that possibilities include innovative pilots such as home repair loans, expansion of the existing rental housing location services, and shared housing that matches individuals who need affordable housing with homeowners with rooms to rent. In addition, there is a plan to offer an educational curriculum cover-

ing budgets, savings, credit and debt, and fair housing, as well as more transparency on how to obtain assistance. “The combined service offerings will be available more fully throughout the county, and potentially, regionally,” said Stacks. Both organizations are looking forward to a future as one stronger and better organization. “(We) can build off long-standing relationships with landlords to provide greater education, partnership, and advocacy,” said Stacks, who noted that this may influence the availability of safe, quality housing throughout the county. “Together, we will increase ease of collaboration with other partners in the community.” Stacks said that the boards of LHOP and Tabor will combine to form a single board of directors.

Walnut Street may be closed from Third to Front streets. Fire police and local police will oversee traffic control.

Phyllis Stacks, vice president for development with Tabor, noted that the two organizations had been considering the move for nearly a year. “The … value of a possible merger emerged through both organizations’ strategic planning processes these past summers,” she reported, noting that the pair’s shared commitment to the concept that “everyone deserves a place to call home” was a motivating factor. Benefiting clients of both organizations is one main goal of the merger. “Together … we can empower clients (on) a journey from crisis to stability to achieving long-term goals like homeownership,” said Stacks, noting that the two organizations help by lending to developers as well as partnering with landlords. “On the housing demand side, (we will be) helping people find

Columbia Public Library, 24 S. Sixth St., Columbia, is offering a virtual Summer Reading Program. For the past 12 years, library staff have prepared sign-up sheets, printed logs, and given children their ticket packs. Now, the program is moving into a paperless format. Using Beanstack, an application that is available for both computers and handheld devices, children will track their minutes, complete their activities, and receive their prizes. Beanstack went live on June 20. Parents may use it to register their children.

To use Beanstack on a desktop computer or laptop, readers may visit https://lancasterlibraries .beanstack.org and select the Register an Individual or a Family button. In order to complete their information, parents or caregivers may fill out the Adult screen. All family members can be accessed with one log-in. After registration, they will be directed to Current Challenges. They may select the Log Reading and Activities button and begin logging their minutes and activities. To use Beanstack on a handheld device, readers may download the Beanstack Tracker app from

GooglePlay or the App Store, search for their library by typing “Lancaster” and choosing the bottom selection, tap “Sign Up,” create an account, add readers (children), follow the prompts to complete their registration, tap “Discover” and register for Challenges, and touch the “+” icon to log reading minutes and activities. The app allows users to track statistics and badges. Readers with questions may email info@lancasterlibraries.org and allow 24 to 48 hours for a response. Summer programs will also be held virtually.

year’s show in Marietta will last approximately 45 minutes, featuring a rapid-fire opening, a ground show, a memorial barrage, and a grand finale - all thanks to a crew of 55 volunteers who give of their time and expertise. One hundred percent of donations from parking will go toward funding the annual Marietta fireworks. Schatz noted that the organization’s funds have dwindled due to the economic effects that the coronavirus shutdowns have had across the board. Financial donations are appreciated and more information about how to contribute may be found by emailing mariettafireworks @outlook.com or by searching for “Marietta Fireworks” on Facebook. Individuals will have another way to support the fireworks as well. A photo taken by Kathleen Griffey Harrison as she viewed the 2019 fireworks display from CBC has been made into a print on canvas. The print will be auctioned off on the Marietta Fireworks Facebook page starting on Wednesday, July 1, with the winner to be announced on Monday, July 6. Proceeds will support the fireworks. Schatz believes that Marietta’s first Independence Day fireworks display would have taken place around 1959 or 1960 as part of a grassroots town gathering. In the 1970s, the former Marietta Jaycees organization took over planning the fireworks, as well as a popular two-day carnival that eventually grew to be a weeklong event. Later on, Schatz said, the fireworks were organized by an independent carnival committee before that dropped off. In 2014 and 2015, Pioneer Fire Company organized a carnival and fireworks.

The annual Marietta fireworks display is a community treasure to many people - and particularly to Gary Schatz and other dedicated residents who worked diligently to bring back the event in 2018 after a hiatus. Starting from scratch raising funds for a spectacular show then was no small task. The Marietta Fireworks volunteer committee formed an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and sought donations in order to fund a fireworks show for local residents. This summer, even as many public fireworks displays have been canceled amid coronavirus concerns, organizers of the Marietta event have opted for the show to go on. “Even though a lot of places canceled their events, we really felt that it was what people need right now for morale,” noted Schatz. “The community needs this.” The fireworks display is set to go off on Saturday, July 4, at Marietta War Memorial Park, 344 E. Walnut St., at approximately 9:15 p.m. or when conditions permit. Last year, for

instance, Schatz said that the show’s start time was delayed approximately 15 minutes due to heavy rain. Parking will be available by donation on the baseball field at the park, as well as in the lot at Community Bible Church (CBC), 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta. Beginning at 5 p.m., CBC will have music playing on outside speakers, and food trucks will be set up in the church parking lot with food and beverages available for people to purchase. Those who choose to view fireworks at either location should plan to follow the standard social distancing protocol. Schatz emphasized that all volunteers involved in the event will be taking all of the recommended safety precautions to prevent the spread of COVID19, including using PPE kits and undergoing temperature checks prior to the start of the event. A trained pyrotechnician, Schatz has been setting off fireworks displays for the public throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware since the early 1980s. He estimates that this

York County Libraries opened for curbside pickup of library materials on June 15. Members must reserve books in advance at www.yorklibraries.org and are then notified when the items are ready for pickup at the library. Members may also return checked out materials to library book drops. The decision to offer curbside service is in alignment with the direction and recommendations of the Office of Commonwealth Libraries, Gov. Tom Wolf, Pennsylvania’s Department of Health, and the CDC. York County libraries will gradually reintroduce the breadth of library services while working to provide a safe library environment for employees and members. Staff have received training on recommended cleaning and disinfection procedures and will follow safe handling and quarantine protocols for returned library materials. Protective barriers have been put in place, and

The Lancaster County Conservation District and the Federated Sportsmen of Lancaster will host the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School for students ages 14 to 16. Rather than canceling the field school due to COVID-19 concerns, organizers have opted to restructure the program and host a virtual experience instead. The school will run from 9 to 11 a.m. daily on Monday to Friday, July 20 to 24. By redesigning programming, organizers are securing opportunities to help keep students involved and motivated. The virtual programming expands the reach of their conservation messaging because of increased capacity, allowing more students to participate and also being available to those from outside Lancaster County or those who may have been hesitant to attend in person. Students who

attend the virtual experience in 2020 still have the option to apply to attend the traditional program in 2021. Youth participants may miss the in-person camaraderie and camping each night at the Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association, but they will still have access to educational experiences through virtual field trips and live-streamed activities and instruction. There is no cost, but registration is required. Youth Conservation School kits containing printed materials and activities for the week will be mailed to each participant registering by Monday, July 6. To learn more about the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School, readers may visit http://lancasterconservation.org /education/youth-conservation -school/.

The print will be auctioned to raise funds for Marietta Fireworks. Fireworks returned in 2018, along with events and activities in Marietta War Memorial Park. While preliminary events during the day leading up to the fireworks had to be canceled for 2020 due to space limitations

that would not be conducive to social distancing, Schatz is thrilled that at least the fireworks will be happening - and hopeful that the weather will be just right for another memorable display above Marietta.

YWCA Seeks Nominations

National Quality Forum Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., but the conference was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last Pennsylvania health system to win an Eisenberg Award was the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2004. Previous award winners have included well-known health care organizations across the country, including the Mayo Clinic, Memorial Hermann Health System in Texas, Kaiser Permanente, and Henry Ford Health System in Michigan. WellSpan Health received the Eisenberg Award in the category of Local Level Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality, which recognizes a project or initiative that focuses on making an impact at the local community, organization, or regional level. WellSpan’s Sepsis Central Alert Team program earned the award as an example of successful system changes or interventions that make care safer or advocate on a patient’s behalf. Begun in 2017, the Sepsis Cen-

tral Alert Team is a group of registered nurses who have critical care and emergency medicine experience and who continuously monitor patients for signs of sepsis at five WellSpan hospitals from a remote location. The team is notified when WellSpan’s electronic health record system detects symptoms of sepsis in a patient’s vital signs, including temperature and heart rate, and lab results. When notified of these markers, the Sepsis Central Alert Team directly contacts the patient’s physician or nurse, so they can determine if the patient may be septic or clinically unstable and can consider administering life-saving drugs, fluids, and other interventions. The team has saved an estimated 350 lives since its inception, as it dramatically shortened the time it takes WellSpan to respond to sepsis cases and speeded up the time that patients receive lifesaving medications. Early identification and screening times improved from

67 minutes to 12 minutes. As a result, the percentage of WellSpan patients who receive both timely and effective sepsis care is better than both state and national averages. WellSpan reported that WellSpan York Hospital now boasts a sepsis survival rate in the top 1% of its peers nationally. Nominations will be accepted for the fourth annual Women of Achievement Luncheon. YWCA Lancaster will honor four women in the community and help to raise money and awareness for YWCA Lancaster’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. YWCA Lancaster seeks to recognize local extraordinary women who selflessly give of their time and energy to make the community a better place. This event recognizes and honors women who have demonstrated qualities of leadership and excellence in their personal and professional endeavors while supporting, embodying, and complementing YWCA Lancaster’s mission. The Women of Achievement Luncheon is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 6, at noon. It may look a bit different this year as staff plan, observing the current

guidelines for public gatherings. Regardless of how many people are able to gather in one room, four outstanding women in the community will be honored. A new category has been added for young women ages 16 to 20. The YWCA also wants to offer a special opportunity and recognition for women who have served on the front lines during the coronavirus pandemic, such as a health care worker, grocery store clerk, first responder, police woman, or anyone who was in the midst of the crisis and exhibited grace under fire while embracing the mission of YWCA. Nominations will be accepted through Monday, July 20. To nominate a woman, readers may visit https://ywcalancaster .org/womenofachievement/ and download a nomination packet. Partner opportunities are still available. For more information, readers may call 717-393-1735.

WellSpan reported that it is the first Pennsylvania health system to achieve the honor in 15 years. The Joint Commission is known as the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care, and the National Quality Forum sets national standards for health care performance measurement. Checking In With Black Rock Retreat By Dayna M. Reidenouer

R060276

Find problem gambling help 717-299-2831

Like nearly every other organization, Black Rock Retreat (BRR), 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, has been impacted by the shutdown due to COVID-19. While the impact on the Christian camping ministry’s finances is notable, the organization’s leaders used it as impetus to create new programs to meet its own needs and those of the community. “We have been working with several local food banks and churches to store and help order food as well as make some meals that have been distributed to local families. So far, we have supplied meals for almost 2,000 people in the Lancaster area,” BRR outdoor education director Jon Hill said on June 18. “We are also partnering with two local ministries to help provide temporary, transitional emergency housing for families who have been economically impacted by the pandemic.” BRR has also created Family Weekend Getaways, a program to give family members the opportunity to slow down, enjoy the beauty of God’s creation, and connect with each other. Dates are available every weekend in July. Checkin will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. on Fridays, and checkout will be 2 p.m. on Sundays. Lodging will primarily be available in cabins or the retreat center, with all options including private bathrooms. A limited number of tent campsites are available for those who want a more rustic experience. Additionally, meal packages will be offered to take the stress out of cooking. Hill noted that the menus will be planned by BRR’s chef and will include family-friendly options. “We want this to be a relaxing

weekend for families, and (we) have plenty of recreation areas available including basketball, volleyball, gaga court, (and) hiking trails, and the pool will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday,” Hill said. “Due to the current guidelines, we are asking families to bring their own sports equipment.” For safety, families are asked to reschedule their visit if anyone in their homes has a fever or other signs of sickness, and they must sign a waiver at check-in stating that they are healthy and will abide by physical distancing guidelines if they interact with other guests. Masks will be required in indoor public spaces or whenever physical distancing is not in use. BRR’s summer camp program will restart on Sunday, July 5, with both overnight and day camp programs. Guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Pennsylvania Department of Health will be in use. Hill noted that although campers will be getting picked up while families arrive for the getaways, there will be minimal interactions between the two groups. Additionally, the Family Weekend Getaways will not use the cabins that are used by summer camp guests. The getaways will take place rain or shine, and rescheduling due to weather

will be handled on a case-by-case basis. “Rainy days can be part of the fun of camping,” Hill remarked. Two other programs BRR has rolled out include a matching gift challenge and a nine-month Christian gap year program. The gap year will be run through a partnership with OneLife Institute. Beginning in August, recent high school graduates will live at BRR for nine months and receive discipleship training, serve in different areas of camp, and earn college credits through Cairn University. The matching gift challenge was created by a BRR supporter, who pledged to match donations up to $100,000. More than $80,000 in contributions has already been received, but more will be welcome. Supporting BRR now will enable the ministry to continue for years to come, Hill suggested. For more information about BRR and its new programs, readers may visit www.brr.org or call 800-858-9299.

Black Rock Retreat will host Family Weekend Getaways this summer. The Christian camping ministry located south of Quarryville is also fundraising to meet a $100,000 matching grant.

Dutch Apple To Reopen Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster, will reopen on Friday, July 17, with “Clue The Musical,” a murder mystery based on the classic board game. Dutch Apple has made numerous adjustments to ensure the health and safety of its cast members, employees and customers. In adhering with the CDC recommendations and the green phase guidelines set by Gov. Wolf, the theater will operate at a reduced capacity with social distancing being encouraged throughout the theater. The seating arrangement has been altered to appropriately space the tables, and all tables will be private. In addition to the main stage show, Dutch Apple will host a children’s theater performance of “How I Became a Pirate” starting on Friday, July 24, and two tribute concerts, “Manilow and Streisand” on Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26, and “ABBAFAB” on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15 and 16, that were rescheduled from earlier this year. The show will be performed on Tuesday through Sunday evenings with select matinees through Sunday, Aug. 30.
