Couple To Bicycle Across Country By Chelsea Peifer
Bicycling across the United States has always been a dream of Erin Steinweg’s, and this summer that dream will come to fruition as she and her fiancé, Garrett Collins, make the trek across the country. The pair will fly to the West Coast in August to set off on a selfsupported bicycle ride from Eugene, Ore., to Yorktown, Va. Steinweg and Collins will be on the road for approximately 60 days to cover a total of 4,200 miles - all while carrying their own tents, sleeping bags, and other supplies. “We weren’t sure when we would get to do it, because there are three main things you need to do a trip like this: time, money, and health,” explained Collins. “But we both had time off and everything else just came into place, so we’re really excited to be going now.” Steinweg, 22, graduated from Manheim
Central High School in 2015 and from Messiah College in May with a degree in biology. Steinweg is in the process of applying to physician assistant graduate programs. Collins, 24, graduated from Lebanon Valley College with his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in May and decided to delay his job search a bit so he and Steinweg could bike across the country. Collins, who completed a portion of this bicycling journey with a friend a few years ago, noted, “It’s really amazing some of the people you’ll meet along the way.” For Collins, that included someone trying to set a record while riding a unicycle and members of a group from Harvard University who were using bicycle touring to travel into various parts of the country to teach at-risk children. As Steinweg and Collins ride, they will be raising awareness of and money for Lifecycles, a mentoring program based in Lancaster County that uses bicycling as a means to instill character in young adults. “We wanted to use this trip as an opportunity to raise money for See Lifecycles pg 7
Beginning on Aug. 6, Erin Steinweg (left) and Garrett Collins plan to bicycle approximately 4,200 miles from the Pacific coast of Oregon to the Atlantic coast of Virginia in about 60 days. The couple will raise funds to support Lifecycles, a Lancaster-based organization that mentors youths through bicycling experiences.

To make it easier for customers to find products that have been grown or produced in Pennsylvania, Giant Food Stores has introduced PA Preferred shelf tags at all of its 156 stores located within Pennsylvania. PA Preferred is the official brand of food and agricultural products grown, produced, or processed in Pennsylvania. Giant has supported the program, which is designed to help the state’s farmers and food suppliers grow their businesses, since its inception in 2004. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding recently joined Giant vice president and chief marketing officer Matt Simon at a press conference in Camp Hill to unveil the shelf tag program. More than 900 items, including meat, poultry, dairy, snacks, condiments, sauces, and even pet food, are now identified by tags with the PA Preferred logo displayed at the shelf level, helping customers to identify Pennsylvania products. The PA Preferred shelf tags will be displayed in stores year-round. With the arrival of the local produce

For parents - or campers - who may be a bit apprehensive about the campers paddling on the river, Columbia Crossing manager Hope Byers noted that safety will be emphasized in all activities. Tandem kayaks will be offered for students who may not feel comfortable navigating the water alone, and the campers will have adult guides accompanying them at all times. “It’s a progressive experience,” said Byers, adding that campers will learn skills and techniques before going out on the water. In addition to developing new skills, Scholz and Byers hope that participants will gain an appreciation for the Susquehanna River and become more comfortable on the water - perhaps making them lifelong river connoisseurs. “We find that kids who do get out on the water (at a younger age) are

Designed for youths ages 12 to 15, SUSQ Camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day from Monday, July 29, through Friday, Aug. 2. Columbia Crossing program coordinator Allison Scholz explained that campers will spend half the day paddling on the Susquehanna River with professional guides and instructors from Chiques Rock Outfitters to learn proper technique and water safety. Paddling will include out-andback exercises on the section of the Susquehanna River at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and other excursions down the river to destinations that will require taking a shuttle ride back. The rest of the day will feature onland activities with Susquehanna Heritage staff members leading activities including water quality exploration, arts and crafts, and games. Participants will also explore the Northwest River Trail. Other potential recreational activities may include bicycling on the Northwest

Lifecycles from pg 1 an organization that brings honor to God,” Steinweg shared. “We wanted to make it bigger than just ourselves.” Volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Plus, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. Lifecycles leaders are planning to embark on a cross-country bicycle tour with a group of boys next summer. Steinweg and Collins are hoping that their own journey will inspire those riders as they train and prepare. “We want to show them that anyone can do it,” said Collins. Training for Steinweg and Collins has mostly consisted of lots of bicycle rides. Meals will generally be purchased from gas station convenience stores, with the occasional sit-down meal to refuel. Generators that attach to and are powered by bicycle wheels will enable Steinweg and Collins to keep their phones charged. The pair plans to utilize an app called Warm Showers that connects bicycle tourists worldwide with hosts that offer free hospitality - whether a place to wash up, get a beverage, or spend the night. “A lot of churches will open up their doors too, letting cyclists utilize their youth centers or other spaces like a hostel,” Collins noted. The cross-country ride is not the first incredible physical feat for either Steinweg or Collins, who first met while competing in the annual Lititz recCenter adult triathlon. Collins got hooked on triathlons in high school and recently accomplished an Ironman. Steinweg began doing triathlons during college and completed the Boston Marathon in 2018. The two are planning a May 2020 wedding. To donate toward the couple’s campaign for Lifecycles, readers may visit www.gofundme.com/coast-to-coastcampaign-for-lifecycles. Parking will be available on the baseball field, and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. Earlier in the day, folks will be invited to cheer on participants in the Historic Marietta Bike Race, with the first division beginning at 10:45 a.m. and the last set at 2 p.m. The start and finish lines for each competition will be in front of Lancaster Recumbent, 103 W. Market St., Marietta. In addition to the fireworks and bike race, plenty of entertainment will be offered in the Marietta War Memorial Park. A cornhole tournament will begin at 2 p.m., and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams. Registration will open at noon, and there is a set fee per person. A Kids Zone from 3Monkeys Inflatables will be open in the park from 4 to 9 p.m., featuring a bounce house, a “Wacky World obstacle course, and a 65-foot obstacle and slide challenge. Wristbands may be purchased for a set rate for children to enjoy the inflatables throughout the evening. Mascot Smokey Bear will also visit the park. At 7 p.m., character juggler Chris Ivey will take the stage to showcase his unique blend of technical juggling and theatrical flair. Local bands and musicians will also be performing on stage before and after Ivey’s show. Morning traffic anchor and reporter Corinne Lillis will serve as master of ceremonies for the evening. Food will be available to purchase from area food trucks and novelty vendors throughout the day. Trained pyrotechnician and Marietta native Gary Schatz said that this year’s fireworks display is going to be even more fantastic than last year’s. He estimated that the show will last approximately 45 minutes. “We have at least 40 people on our (fireworks) team, and we are completely volunteer, said Schatz. The fireworks will feature a huge opening, a ground show, a memorial barrage, and a grand finale. The opening part of the show will be offered in honor of Ben Thompson, a Marietta World War II and Korean War veteran who passed away in February 2019 at age 94. Thompson served his country in the United States Air Force from 1942 to 1972. Schatz was instrumental in bringing fireworks back to Marietta in 2018 after a twoyear hiatus. He believes that the town’s first Independence Day fireworks display would have been around 1960 as part of a grassroots town gathering. In the 1970s, the former Marietta Jaycees organization took over planning the fireworks, as well as a popular two-day carnival that eventually grew to be
a weeklong event. Later on, Schatz said, the fireworks were organized by an independent carnival committee before that dropped off. In 2014 and 2015, Pioneer Fire Company organized a carnival and fireworks. “Fireworks have always been a community thing in Marietta, remarked Schatz. “There were some years it didn’t happen, but not many. Donations to support the Marietta Fireworks are needed, and interested individuals may email mariettafireworks@outlook.com to learn more about how to contribute. Readers may also visit www.facebook .com/mariettafireworks for more details.
