Death At A Funeral BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Family feuds can be dramatic, dysfunctional or - in the case of Rivertown Theatre Productions’ newest show - deadly. “The Deadly Affair” will be performed on Friday, July 23, at 6 and 8 p.m.; Saturday, July 24, at 4, 6 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, July 25, at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. Performances will be held at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 616 Locust St., Columbia.
“Follies” cast members include (from left) Lydia Alkinburgh, Lorraine Ford, Mike Kohler, Lindsay Bretz-Morgan and Charis McMellen.
“Follies” Looks Back At The Past BY CATHY MOLITORIS
f you had a chance to relive the past, would you take it? That’s the question at the center of “Follies,” which will be performed at Susquehanna Stage from Friday, July 23, through Sunday, Aug. 1. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “Follies” reunites performers from a musical revue that ran between World War I and World War II until closing in 1941. “The theater where the Follies were is being torn down,” said Sharon Boyer, who portrays Heidi Schiller in the show and is also the vocal director. “The characters come together 30 years after the last Follies, in 1971, to reminisce.” The show focuses on two couples - Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers
Gagliano noted that audience members may seem themselves in the characters. “Think about going to your high school reunion,” she remarked. “You might go in with preconceived notions of who people were or what you thought you would be or who you would become, but now maybe your life hasn’t turned out the way you thought it would.” Lindsay Bretz-Morgan, who plays Sally in the show, said the musical doesn’t have a typical happy ending or saccharine sweetness to it. “The characters in this show are very relatable,” she stated. “These are people who are going through life, but they are not truly happy. They’re just going with the flow of life and where it takes them, and I think a lot of people can relate to that.”

Stone. The two women were showgirls in the Follies and, despite their outwardly successful lives, all four people are fundamentally unhappy. The cast features young adults who portray various Follies performers in their younger years. “They are sort of ghosts on stage, playing the performers from the past,” explained choreographer Jill Gagliano. “They are onstage, but they don’t really interact with the current-day characters.” “Follies” is a bittersweet show, said Lorraine Ford, who portrays Phyllis. “The show is a really interesting exploration of life,” she stated. “Wouldn’t you like to look back and watch a movie of your life and see, as a mature adult, how the decisions you made as a 21-year-old are affecting you now?”
The church makes the perfect setting for the play, said Sara Mimnall, who, along with Rebecca Wright, wrote the show. “Edward Keller has just died tragically, and his immediate family has come together for his funeral,” she explained. “There is definitely some inner family fighting going on.” After the drama comes to a boiling point, the characters storm off in a rage before returning to settle down and continue the funeral. They soon discover not all have returned and one person won’t be coming back. “The show is a mix of comedy and drama,” noted Mimnall, who plays Anne Keller in the show. “There are moments of laughs, but there are also times when you’ll be sitting on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next.”

Mike Kohler, who portrays Ben, said “Follies” isn’t performed often because it’s a technically challenging show. “The music is hard, the lyrics are hard, the costumes are elaborate and there’s a lot of different styles of dance in the show,” he noted. Gagliano said that despite the challenges of putting on “Follies,” the result is well worth it. “The music is fabulous, the costumes are incredible, and the dancing is great,” she stated. “It’s just an all-

School supplies for children and youths in grades kindergarten through 12 will be collected, along with sweatshirts, sweatpants and children’s socks. The items will then be dispersed to the Donegal, Elizabethtown, Hempfield and Columbia Borough school districts. The food bank collection is an extension of the church’s ongoing service project within its congregation. Food collected will benefit the Mount Joy Food Bank and the East
Donegal Conoy Christian Food Bank. Everyone who donates three items either to stuff the bus or to the food bank collection will receive three tickets for a basket giveaway drawing at the bazaar. The bazaar will include 30 vendors, offering everything from crafts to art. A Chinese auction will be held, and hundreds of baskets will be featured in a giveaway drawing. Items include restaurant gift cards, trips to local attractions and more. “This is truly a ‘love thy neighbor’ event,” said Claudia, who noted that the church typically holds its bazaar over three days in the fall but had to change plans this year due to the pandemic. “People

“When the pandemic shut down our facilities, outdoor recreation was still incredibly popular,” said Hope Byers, director of Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, which is managed by Susquehanna NHA. “We were figuring out a way to direct people to what was available to them, but we couldn’t talk to them in person. Normally, we give out a lot of paper guides, but we couldn’t do that.” Instead, Byers and Megan Salvatore, visitor services representative, created a custom map of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail on the Google Maps platform. In early 2021, they were contacted by Franklin & Marshall College about developing a mobile app. Professor Ed Novak led a computer science course that taught students how to create fully functional Android app prototypes for community partners, Byers stated. Susquehanna NHA applied to participate and was chosen as one of four projects. “Our goal was to take the popular Google Map and expand it beyond a single trail so visitors and residents would have a single-source trail information app,” she said. Byers and Salvatore worked on expanding information to include in the app while the F&M students Rafael Silva, Waleed Kamal Butt, Molly Sproul, Quang Anh Tran and Thu Do - developed the code. “It was obvious that these were passionate, dedicated students,” said Byers. “They managed the project so professionally and really treated it as if I was their client. They taught me how to use tools to keep the app

functioning, send notifications and walked me through the app launch. Susquehanna NHA is so grateful for their dedication to create not just a prototype but a live application.” Features of the app include trail information such as access areas, parking, restroom facilities and heritage sites. Notifications about trail updates, construction or trail conditions can be sent out to users as well. “You can also interact with us,” said Byers. “If you’re on a trail and you notice that a tree is down, or you see an invasive species, you can report a problem to us directly through the app.” The app is currently only available for Android phones, but Byers said she hopes to be able to add it for Apple users in the future. For now, Apple users can access the custom Google Map by clicking on “Explore” and then “SNHA Maps & Guides” at www.susquehanna heritage.org. Android users can access the app by searching for “Susquehanna NHA Trails” in the Google Play store.

wanted to partner with the church for a long time and try a different venue, so we thought, ‘Let’s see what we can write that can take place in a church.’” Wright and Mimnall founded Rivertown Theatre Productions in 2019. In addition to murder mysteries, the organization will partner with the Columbia Historical Society and the Columbia Economic Development Committee to host the Columbia Historical Walking Tour on Saturday, Aug. 21. Additionally, the production company operates Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, which will run in October. “We’re a nonprofit organization, so any money we make from shows and events, we put it toward future productions or into renovation of the Miller mansion,” Wright said.
