JULY IS NATIONAL ANTI-BOREDOM MONTH!

Chamber To Offer Online Marketplace By Francine Fulton

Since its annual Antique, Art and Craft Show in June had to be canceled because of COVID-19, the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce has come up with a new fundraiser that will benefit vendors and shoppers alike. The Chamber will host its first-ever virtual marketplace, which will run from Saturday, Aug. 1, through Saturday, Aug. 29. The market can be accessed at www.svmarketplace.shop. According to event organizers, it will be a one-of-a-kind shopping experience that will allow people to visit a website where they can shop from local businesses, restaurants, artists and others. The hope is that those who exhibited

or shopped at the traditional show will also participate in the virtual event. “I talked to some local vendors, and they depend on these events,” said Beverly Shank, Chamber director, explaining how the idea came about. “We tried to figure out something we could do to benefit the (shoppers) and allow our members and small businesses in town to participate. We’ve never done it before, but we felt there was huge need out there.” People may find crafts, antiques and possibly clothing while shopping virtually. “ We are trying to encourage restaurants to promote their businesses with a gift certificate or coupon,” said Shank. “Or (vendors may offer) things people would like for unique Christmas gifts.” The Chamber is partnering with Alegre Events to present the virtual

fundraiser. The company will set up the online marketplace, which will allow shoppers to view a list of vendors. They can then click on the ones they are interested in. “It will be like shopping on Etsy,” noted Shank, adding, “If a vendor is having trouble getting things set up, Alegre will help them. They should not shy away from (the virtual marketplace) because of technology.” According to Shank, vendors and artisans will have multiple opportunities to be discovered on the marketplace site through various search options. Vendors may also share demonstration videos online to educate shoppers about their craft or business. “We’re hoping to get people who want to do educational demonstration videos,” said Shank. “For example, maybe someone who makes animal balloons may do a demonstration or See Online Marketplace pg 3

Rotary’s Annual Tournament To Support Local, Global Efforts CWM

The 31st annual Rotary Club of Eastern York County Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, Aug. 7, at Cool Creek Golf Club, 300 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. Start times will be available from 7:30 a.m. to noon or later, depending on the number of registered golfers. The tournament will feature a two-person scramble format. Gross and net scoring will be available to all teams; there will be one gross division, one net division, and one Callaway division. Teams must have a valid See Rotary pg 2

Inviting the community to take part in the 31st annual Rotary Club of Eastern York County Memorial Golf Tournament on Aug. 7 are (from left) Rotarian Phil Lehman; tournament chair Chris Leiphart, outgoing Rotary president; and Rotarian Kenneth Stoner, who has been a member for more than 60 years and a tournament committee member and chair for 31 years.

In 2019, the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce held its annual Antique, Art and Craft Show featuring nearly 200 vendors that were located along Locust Street and in Columbia’s Locust Street Park. Because this year’s event was canceled, the Chamber will instead hold its first-ever virtual marketplace from Aug. 1 to 29.

EPC Golf Outing To Aid Good Samaritan Services By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Now more than ever, thanks to jobs and wages lost while the stay-at-home order was in place, resources for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their homes are in demand. Thankfully, Good Samaritan Services (GSS), which serves individuals and families in Lancaster and Chester counties who have poverty-related needs, is prepared to help. “We provide a wide spectrum of services that are customizable to each individual or family at whatever place they are at in their journey to stability,” said Shadoe Settle, GSS development and communications coordinator. “Our services are always expanding. Right

now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in

Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.” See EPC pg 2

The annual EPC Golf Outing on Sept. 25 will benefit Good Samaritan Services, which provides a range of services to assist individuals overcoming homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties.

Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its existing participants stable, thanks to support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance during this time enabled all of our participants to remain in their housing, pay their bills, and continue life as normally as possible during such an abnormal time,” Settle said. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining state-issued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes for new clients. GSS family resource coordinators met with participants via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, and other virtual-meeting software to provide housing support services. The financial impact of COVID-19 will be felt for a long time to come, and GSS expects the need for its services to increase, Settle said. The nonprofit organization depends on donations and fundraisers to operate. One such fundraiser is the golf outing hosted by

Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). “Our partnership with EPC and their willingness to organize such a wonderful event has been an incredible blessing, financially and relationally,” Settle remarked. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and it has continued to provide funds needed to perform all of our services.” “We recognize the impact that this nonprofit has on our own neighbors in the same areas that we serve as a company,” said EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “We’re honored to build this relationship with GSS to assist them in aiding families right here in our community.” The 2019 EPC Golf Outing raised $20,000, and the goal this year is to meet or surpass that total with the help of golfers and sponsors, Hillegas said. The 13th annual EPC Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times of 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. are available. The event had initially been planned for June. “Like many other events this year, we were faced with the decision to cancel or reschedule our event,” Hillegas commented. “We know how much this event impacts

families right here in our Lancaster County and Chester County communities, so we made the decision to reschedule the June outing for September. The health and safety of our golfers and volunteers was the main driving force behind this decision, and we look forward to what a fall golf outing for this event will look like.” The Tee It Forward contest hole that was introduced last year will be continued. Hillegas noted that while this year’s event will include bag lunches from Trio Bar and

Grill, chicken barbecue from Peters’ BBQ will also be available. Chicken barbecue had been a feature of the EPC Golf Outings a few years ago, and Hillegas and her team are pleased to bring it back. MERCHANDISER - Columbia/Hellam/Wrightsville Edition - July 15, 2020 - 5

For more than a half-century, thousands of people have flocked to the western edge of Lancaster County for the annual Washington Boro Tomato Festival. The event has looked similar from year to year, featuring carnival games, performances by country music bands, and the ubiquitous tomato sandwiches made with the famous Jet Star variety. Even when the organizers changed from a civic group to a fire company, the festival essentially remained unchanged. Until COVID-19. For the first time, the Tomato Festival will be suspended. In its place, the Blue Rock Fire Rescue support group will host a food truck event. Rather than occur on two Saturdays as the festival does, the food truck event will be held on consecutive days. Vendors will be ready for business on Friday, July 17, from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, July 18, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We do not feel comfortable with big crowds gathering and playing games, Blue Rock Fire Rescue support group member Dick Schock commented on the change. “A lot of people are doing (food truck events), and we thought we’d give it a try. If it goes well, we might do it again. The event’s location will also differ somewhat from the Tomato Festival, which takes place in Washington Boro Community Park, 2010 River Road, Washington Boro. The food trucks will be set up in the nearby field where vehicles park for the festival. Schock described the field’s location as “around the S turn south of the park. The field is owned by Lancaster Area Sewer Authority and is also the site of Manor FFA tractor pulls in the fall. The food truck event will be a drive-in, not a drive-through such as the one Mountville Fire Company offered in May. “There’s plenty of parking up there, Schock said. “We are in a green stage right now, so they can walk right up and get their food. Socially distanced tailgating will be welcome, but alcoholic beverages will

be prohibited. Hess’s Barbecue Catering will sell its signature pork, brisket, sausage, and chicken sandwiches. Other vendors will offer cod sandwiches and fish tacos, popcorn, cotton candy, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, soft pretzels, french fries, and funnel cakes. The Tomato Barn will serve up pizza, pies, fruit, locally grown tomatoes, and salsa. Additionally, the support group will sell its Tomato Festival favorites: tomato sandwiches and BLTs along with Turkey Hill beverages and soft-serve ice cream. Hot dogs will be available, but chicken corn soup will not. Donations for the support group will be accepted at the event, with proceeds earmarked for the recruitment and retention of Blue Rock Fire Rescue members. Schock explained that availability is one of the greatest issues the fire company faces. “It’s not how many people. It’s whether they’re there when you need them, he said, adding that individuals working a variety of shifts are needed to join the fire company to ensure sufficient coverage of Millersville and Manor Township is available around the clock. The feedback on the change from Tomato Festival to food truck event has been mostly positive. “Most of the people realize what’s going on (and are understanding), Schock said. “There’s some upset because people use the (festival) as a social get-together. The most challenging aspect of the entire thing was making the decision on what to do, Schock said. The support group had to decide at the beginning of June how it would proceed, even in the midst of uncertainty about what stage of reopening Lancaster County would be in. There is a silver lining, however. “It’ll be easier to do this way because we won’t have to set up so much, Schock remarked. For more information about the food truck event, readers may call Schock at 717-951-6411. Anyone interested in volunteering with the fire company may visit www.bluerockfire.com.

Landis-Burkholder The wedding of Ashley Burkholder and Kegan Landis took place on May 23 at the bride’s grandparents’ farm in Washington Boro. Pastor Jim Hottenstein officiated at the 2:30 p.m. ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Jeff and Michelle Burkholder of Maytown. She graduated from Donegal High School in 2015 and Montana Wilderness School of the Bible in 2019. She is employed by COBYS Family Services in Lancaster. The groom is the son of John and Boni Landis of Manheim. He graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2013 and Montana Wilderness School of the Bible in 2019. He is employed by Richard L. Sensenig Company in Ephrata. The maid of honor was Alexis Risser of Lancaster. Bridemaids were Morgan Wesson of Michigan; Lauren Landis of Lancaster, sister-in-law of the bride; Karissa Burkholder of Mount Joy, cousin-in-law of the bride; and Jade Ranger of India, sister of the groom.

Rite Aid Launches Miracle Balloon Campaign Rite Aid customers can support the lifesaving work of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals during a critical time through Rite Aid’s annual Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign, running through Saturday, Aug. 8. Rite Aid customers can add a donation to their in-store transactions, as well as donate online through Rite Aid’s social media channels. All proceeds will be received by the local community’s children’s hospital to fund critical treatments and health care services and to provide pediatric medical equipment and charitable care for 53 children’s hospitals in the communities that Rite Aid serves. This year will mark the 26th year that Rite Aid has conducted the Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign benefiting CMN Hospitals, raising and donating $95 million in support of children’s hospitals. This year’s

effort comes with an unprecedented pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing supplies have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Relay For Life To Offer Drive-Through Format Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the previously scheduled Relay For Life of Lancaster County has been rescheduled as a drive-through event on Saturday, July 18, at the Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster. The lot will open at 7:30 p.m., and the showing will begin at 8:30 p.m. From the safety of their own vehicle,

attendees will celebrate survivors, caregivers, and Relay participants; remember loved ones; and fight back against cancer. At the conclusion of the service, participants will be directed to exit through a drive illuminated with luminaria bags. Readers may visit www.relayforlife .org/palancaster for more information about the event.

Blood samples will be sent to a thirdparty reference lab for antibody testing. Results will generally be available in about 2 to 5 days. Patients may opt to receive their result via text message. Otherwise, patients will be contacted by phone about the result. For most patients, there is no out-ofpocket expense for antibody testing. For insured patients, the visit will be submitted to patients’ insurance plans. Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. The lab will determine what, if anything, it bills the patient. For those with symptoms of COVID-19 and those who wish to determine if they have an active infection, Patient First also offers drive-up COVID-19 active virus testing at designated centers by appointment. Appointments for testing are made by calling a select designated testing center. Updates about testing sites, instructions about how to make an appointment, and other information is available at www.patient first.com/covid-19-testing. All Patient First Medical Centers remain open on a walk-in basis from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily for patients who have an urgent need for medical or injury care.

Patient First now offers COVID-19 antibody testing at all its medical centers on a walk-in basis. Testing is available from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Appointments are not needed for antibody testing. The antibody test is used to determine if someone previously had COVID-19 and not to diagnose an active infection. Antibody testing is for patients who believe they may have had COVID-19 in the past, who are not currently experiencing symptoms of COVID19, and who are at least age 5. Patient First recommends being tested at least 14 days after onset of symptoms of COVID-19 or 14 days after possible exposure, as it may take as long as two weeks for antibodies to develop. The COVID-19 antibody test used at Patient First tests to see if the blood has antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibodies may be found in the blood when the body is responding or has responded to an infection, such as COVID-19. Antibodies may give full or partial immunity to the virus to which they develop. However, it is not known at this time how long the body will have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 or whether they actually give immunity to future infections from this virus.

Plenty of Space!

Lead Camp Security archaeologist John Crawmer has announced approval for the archaeological work at the Camp Security site. Phase one will occur from Wednesday, July 22, through Thursday, July 30. This phase will consist of excavation and/or laboratory work. Volunteers can register for the sessions for which they are available. Since spaces are limited and the work will start soon, volunteers need to sign up for this phase by Friday, July 17. Phase two will primarily include surface collection and metal detecting surveys over a larger area, as well as laboratory work, including cleaning and labeling objects found during the fieldwork. This phase will run from Thursday, Sept. 10, through Thursday, Oct. 8. The deadline to register for phase two is Friday, Sept. 4. This year’s archaeological explorations at Camp Security are funded in part by a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Keystone Historic Preservation Grant. These grants, which much be matched by the recipients, are designated for projects such as cultural resource surveys and archaeological research. For more information or to register, readers may visit www.campsecurity.org, click on Our Newsletters under About Us, and select the latest newsletter. There is also a link to the form on the “Friends of Camp Security Facebook page. Prospective volunteers are asked to register as soon as possible. There are instructions on the form on submitting it to the lead archaeologist. Camp Security is situated in Springettsbury Township. It is the last known Revolutionary War camp for British prisoners of war that has not been almost completely developed over. Many artifacts have been found through past archaeological work at the site to confirm the camp’s location, but the exact location of the stockade, which is documented to have existed, is still being sought so that Camp Security can be properly interpreted. Any questions may be directed to campsecurity@campsecurity.org.
