“Follies” Looks Back At The Past BY CATHY MOLITORIS
f you had a chance to relive the past, would you take it? That’s the question at the center of “Follies,” which will be performed at Susquehanna Stage from Friday, July 23, through Sunday, Aug. 1. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “Follies” reunites performers from a musical revue that ran between World War I and World War II until closing in 1941. “The theater where the Follies were is being torn down,” said Sharon Boyer, who portrays Heidi Schiller in the show and is also the vocal director. “The characters come together 30 years after the last Follies, in 1971, to reminisce.” The show focuses on two couples - Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers Stone. The two women were showgirls in the Follies and, despite their outwardly successful lives, all four people are fundamentally unhappy. The cast features young adults who portray various Follies performers in their younger years. “They are sort of ghosts on stage,
who are going through life, but they are not truly happy. They’re just going with the flow of life and where it takes them, and I think a lot of people can relate to that.” Mike Kohler, who portrays Ben, said “Follies” isn’t performed often because it’s a technically challenging show. “The music is hard, the lyrics are hard, the costumes are elaborate and there’s a lot of different styles of dance in the show,” he noted. Gagliano said that despite the challenges of putting on “Follies,” the result is well worth it. “The music is fabulous, the costumes are incredible, and the dancing is great,” she stated. “It’s just an allaround wonderful show.” “Follies” celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Broadway debut this year, and Susquehanna Stage will hold a special event, “Follies at 50,” on opening night, July 23. The event will feature a wine and cheese social before the performance and a catered event after the show. For more information or to purchase tickets to “Follies,” visit www.susquehannastage.com.

There’s a wealth of support and resources for the community in Hellam Township. That’s the message the township hopes to convey at Hellam Township Police Department’s National Night Out celebration. The event will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hellam Township municipal building, 44 Walnut Springs Road, York. “We are very proud of our police department,” said Corina Mann, township manager. “They do so much for our community, so we wanted to let our community know that our police are here to help, they are friendly, and they are approachable.”

The Columbia Economic Development Corporation (CEDC), in conjunction with the Columbia Historic Preservation Society and Rivertown Theatre Productions, will sponsor a walking tour of 15 historic properties in Columbia. The tour will take place on Saturday, Aug. 21, with the first group of tours commencing at 6 p.m. In 2018, the CEDC received a
grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation to promote the CEDC’s targeted economic development implementation plan for the Columbia Downtown Business District. The board chose to recognize buildings in the Old Columbia section of town due to this area’s great historical significance. The campaign promotes police-community partnerships and seeks to build camaraderie while emphasizing neighborhood safety. Along with members of the Hellam Township Police Department, the Night Out will include representatives from the Hellam Fire Company and the Wrightsville Fire and Rescue Company as well as Susquehanna Valley EMS. “Our police department recently got a K-9, so we’ll be having K-9 demonstrations as well,” Mann said. The K-9 unit is funded wholly by fundraisers and donations, so the police will have merchandise for sale at the event to benefit the program. The municipal offices opened in their new facility in October, but because of the pandemic, there wasn’t an opportunity at the time for an open house, Mann noted, so

setting for the play, said Sara Mimnall, who, along with Rebecca Wright, wrote the show. “Edward Keller has just died tragically, and his immediate family has come together for his funeral,” she explained. “There is definitely some inner family fighting going on.” After the drama comes to a boiling point, the characters storm off in a rage before returning to settle down and continue the funeral. They soon discover not all have returned - and one person won’t be coming back. “The show is a mix of comedy and drama,” noted Mimnall, who plays Anne Keller in the show. “There are moments of laughs, but there are also times when you’ll be sitting on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next.” In addition to Mimnall, the cast of “The Deadly Affair” is Emily Barnhart as Clara Adams, Rick Barnhart as Edward Keller, Chris Raudabaugh as William Keller, Jayden Smith as James Keller, Nick Kaehler as Charles Dansen and Sylvia Garner as Martha Keller. “We are a very close cast, and we play well together on stage,” Mimnall stated. “We have all been acting together before as friends or family members.” Wright said when she and Mimnall started writing “The Deadly Affair,” they planned to create a historical play, similar to their other production this year, “Murder at the Miller
Mansion.” As they began writing, however, they changed their focus. “We said, ‘Let’s try something modern,’” Wright recalled, noting that the previous show was held at the historic Miller mansion, 131 Locust St., Columbia. “We had wanted to partner with the church for a long time and try a different venue, so we thought, ‘Let’s see what we can write that can take place in a church.’” Wright and Mimnall founded Rivertown Theatre Productions in 2019. In addition to murder mysteries, the organization will partner with the Columbia Historical Society and the Columbia Economic Development Committee to host the Columbia Historical Walking Tour on Saturday, Aug. 21. Additionally, the production company operates Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, which will run in October. “We’re a nonprofit organization, so any money we make from shows and events, we put it toward future productions or into renovation of the Miller mansion,” Wright said. Although educational goals, skill building and job attainment are always on the forefront for adult learners entering our program, skilling up after the pandemic takes on a whole new meaning and will be an important step for many workers who lost their jobs during COVID-19 restrictions. For some, it will mean improving basic literacy in reading, math, or English. For others, it will mean career exploration and sharpening skills to move into postsecondary education or training. The Success Centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties are places where adults can get the support they need to build skills so that they can transform their lives, sustain their families and strengthen their communities.* What skills and knowledge do you have to share with an adult student to help them reach their goals? To find out more and to explore the possibilities, please contact: Lancaster County Jane Myers jane@literacysuccess.org 717-295-5523

*As the safety and health of everyone is a priority to us, we will continue to offer options for both face-to-face and remote learning to adapt to individual levels of comfort in providing instruction.
