Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance opens Columbia location

When Stacy Emminger helped form Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) a few years ago, she knew she wanted to someday expand the program beyond its Mount Joy location. That someday is now.

DSAA will open a satellite location in Columbia on Tuesday, Aug. 15. It will be located inside the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., and will be open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“I have known the mayor of Columbia, Leo Lutz, for years,” Emminger noted, adding that she met him through an anti-heroin task force she joined shortly after her son died of a drug overdose in 2014. “When he learned what we were trying to do with DSAA, he said, ‘We need you in Columbia.’ It’s been on my mind that Columbia has a need for our services. Really, every community has a need.”

Beth Brandt will run the Columbia location, Emminger said, adding that the goal is to partner with social services in the community to set up a permanent office. For now, Brandt will work with clients inside the public market space.

“She will be available to meet with people and do the initial contact,” Emminger said. “She might meet with somebody who wants to talk about getting inpatient or outpatient treatment. She might work with family members who have someone who is struggling and want some help.”

Brandt is the ideal person to head up the branch location, Emminger said, because she’s passionate about DSAA’s services. “I call her my ‘crisis management person,’” Emminger stated. “She knows the questions to ask. She’s really good at navigating the system, and she has so many connections in the treatment world.”

Hellam will hold National Night Out

When people come to National Night Out in Hellam, they have the chance to interact with police officers in a positive manner, said Courtney Bullman, police administrator.

“We hold this event to encourage

residents to socialize with their neighbors and support local businesses and law enforcement officials in a fun, relaxed environment,” she stated. “This event bolsters the residents’ familiarity with our officers and helps build trust and partnerships between our communities.”

the state. “People don’t have to live in Mount Joy to get assistance,” Emminger said. “I’ve worked virtually with people in California.”

Part of Brandt’s job will be to network and introduce herself to social services in the Columbia community, spreading the word about what DSAA offers. Along with providing referrals to services and treatment programs, Brandt will also have a supply of free naloxone on hand during her Columbia sessions. At its Mount Joy location, DSAA provides

It may be hot outside, but things will be even hotter inside the East Prospect Community Building when the Eastern York Area Recreation Commission (EYARC) and the East Prospect Playground Association host a chili cook-off. The organizations are looking for participants to sign up for the event, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, beginning at 2:30 p.m. The registration deadline is Tuesday, Aug. 1.

“This is going to be our first

annual chili cook-off,” said Amanda Wompler, director of EYARC. “There had been chili cook-offs in the area before, but it’s been quite a few years since one has been done, and I wanted to bring something back to the community that used to happen annually.”

She encourages people from Eastern York and beyond to sign up. “We’d love to have people from our local community as well as people from outside the area who can come in and see what our community is all about,” she said.

More than 25 years ago, HOPE International, a Christ-centered global nonprofit that equips men and women to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their community, gave out its first micro loan in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Just recently, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, recounted the story of a Ukrainian blueberry farmer named Anastasiya. “Anastasiya decided not to let the war cause her to leave, which is a big deal,” said Rutt. “She had gotten a loan from HOPE prewar for seedlings for her blueberry farm, and in 2022, she was able to secure a second loan for irrigation to increase her crop.” Last year, Anastasiya and her family harvested their first blueberry crop.

HOPE has given out a total of $1.2 million in Ukraine since the war began.

he said, adding that many people who had no interest in spiritual discussions prior to the war want to pray with the HOPE team. “I believe it will have an impact on the generations to come,” he said. Rutt pointed out that before the war, 5.5% of Ukrainians lived below the poverty line. That number is now at 24%, and it is estimated that it could take a decade for the Ukrainian economy to recover.

offer a demonstration with his K9 partner, Cerberus.

Held annually on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out began in 1984 as a way to bring police and community members together.

The first year, 2.5 million people across 400 communities in 23 states participated in the event. Over the years, the celebration has grown to encompass 38 million people in 17,000 communities throughout the United States.

“I would say that the event has a little something for everyone,” Bullman said, encouraging people to come to the Hellam festivities. “There’s free food and fun for the kids. … It’s a fun way to spend the evening, and it supports our boys in blue.”

For more information on the National Night Out program, visit https://natw.org.

HOPE recently surpassed $1.6 billion in micro loans with the goal of restoring dignity in families’ lives. To raise funds to reach such goals, HOPE holds a yearly golf tournament. This year’s fundraiser will take place in three locations: Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City, Md., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14; Iron Valley Golf Club, Lebanon, on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and Wyncote Golf Club, Oxford, on Sept. 15 at 8 a.m. Those who wish to register to play or who want to provide a sponsorship may do so at www.hopeinternational .org/golf by Friday, Sept. 1.

Sarah Smith, content and media writer for HOPE International, said that the HOPE approach offers a sustainable way to alleviate poverty and positively impact a community. “When someone takes out a loan or is saving money and starts a business, they start employing other people in the community,” she noted.

one make an appointment, and if Beth’s not the right person to help, she can direct them to the right person. … Everything we do is confidential, and there is no shame in asking for help.”

For more information on DSAA, visit https://dsa squared.org or search for “DSAA - Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance” on Facebook.

Rutt emphasized that HOPE focuses on all domains, not just the material but also personal, social, and spiritual. “It’s exciting to see what God can do through what He puts in the hands of the clients we serve around the world,” he said, adding that as the war in Ukraine continues to rage, HOPE continues to offer loans in that country and pray with clients. “God is working,” said Rutt. “We see more and more people coming to Christ through interaction with our teams and the churches even through the destruction and disillusionment of the war,”

Rutt added that sustainability is the reason HOPE has always avoided simply giving handouts to those in need. “We believe we can get to a longer-lasting solution through allowing people to use the gifts that God put in our hands. We are interested in restoring dignity, not creating dependency.” To continue to make that happen, Rutt has set a goal of raising $1.5 million toward HOPE’s total budget of $36 million through the golf tournament. “It all happens through partnerships and sponsorships,” he said. “Contact us and help drive out poverty.”

ASPIE opens new gallery

ASPIE held the grand opening for its new gallery from June 9 to 11 at 1905 Barton Drive, Lancaster. ASPIE is a nonprofit organization creating supplemental income for adult artisans with disabilities. The organization serves people who have autism, traumatic brain injuries, dystonia, cerebral

palsy, and other disabilities and who have creative talent and skills. ASPIE helps these artisans generate income through donations for their original artwork using the online gallery at www.aspieartists.com as well as the new brick-and-mortar location.

During the grand opening,

ASPIE featured 10 artists, including five from Lancaster County. Sixty-five people attended the event, and donors took home a total of 46 works of art, including paintings, photographic prints, metal sculptures, wooden toys and note cards. The five local artists spent time at the gallery, interacting with attendees.

ASPIE will host another weekend event at the gallery in the fall. Until then, the gallery will be open by appointment only, and those interested in viewing the artworks may call 207-412-8090.

Giving Trail to benefit nonprofits

The inaugural Giving Trail will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, July 28, and Saturday, July 29. It will begin at Lancaster Gift Box, 317 N. Queen St., Lancaster; continue at The Common Wheel, 324 N. Queen St., Lancaster; and end at Decades, 438 N. Queen St. Everyone age 18 and up is welcome to participate by making a nonperishable food donation at each of the three stops on the trail. Participants who get their Giving Trail Passport stamped at each business will be entered to win a gift tower.

The Giving Trail food drive

will benefit Community Action Partnership (CAP) and will also help raise funds for eight local nonprofits.

As part of the Giving Trail festivities, Decades will host a Christmas in July celebration, including a visit from Santa Claus on July 29 from noon to 4 p.m. On both days, a holiday sangria cocktail will be available, with proceeds benefiting Lancaster Food Hub, and gingerbread-flavored ice cream will be offered, as well.

For more information, including a complete schedule, or to donate online, visit www.lancastergiftbox.com /givingtrail2023.

A visitor (back), from Maryland, joins Steven, from Mount Joy, who creates artwork from metal scraps of all sorts. After viewing Steven’s artwork, the visitor commissioned a new piece of art directly from Steven. Dorrin, a painter from Mountville, displays off one of his comic book collages. Dorrin has a following among comic book aficionados, one of whom attended the ASPIE gallery opening virtually from his home in Virginia. ASPIE artists Jon (front, center), a painter from Lancaster, and Jesse (back, center), a photographer from Lancaster, were joined by Jon’s mother, Annette (front, far left), and gallery visitors from Acadia Rehabilitation in the Greenfield area.
