Fête Will Keep Cemetery In The Black BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia is the final resting place of many people who played key roles in Columbia’s history. You can help preserve that history by attending Fête en Noir, a fundraiser organized by the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery. The event will be held on Friday, Aug. 13, in the cemetery, located at 700 Locust St. Entrance to the
grounds will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a bringyour-own-picnic from 6 to 9 p.m. The event was inspired by similar local fundraisers, said Kathy Hohenadel, a member of the Friends group. “We saw the Fête en Blanc, which is held in Lancaster, and we thought, ‘What a cool idea,’” she recalled. “Since we’re doing this in a cemetery, we decided to do Fête en Noir and encourage people to wear black.” See Fête pg 3

or 24 hours, creativity will be put to the test when Columbia High School Thespian Troupe 289 hosts its first Play-in-a-Day Fest. “We have 24 hours to write, direct, rehearse and produce a play,” said Georgetta Kaufhold, a member of the troupe. “We’re hoping to produce at least two plays, depending on how many kids we get.” The festival will kick off with an open house on Thursday, July 29, from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by creative sessions from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 30, and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 31. Play performances will be held at 7 p.m. on July 31. The festival will take place in the Columbia High School auditorium, 901 Ironville Pike, and is open to anyone age 12 and over. Janet Wood, troupe director, came up with the idea for the festival. “A lot of professional theater groups do play-in-a-day events,” she
“You can come and check it out and see if you like it. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and it will be a cool experience to say you participated in this.” Wood noted that the festival also offers an opportunity for students to try theater without a huge time commitment. “When you participate in a show during the school year, you need to commit hours and weeks of your time,” she said. “This is a way to try theater out and see if you like it.” For Isaiah Spencer, the festival offers not only a chance to indulge his love of theater, but also an opportunity to promote the theater program. “I like the idea of doing theater outside of the school year,” he said. “We’re excited about this, and we hope to make it an annual tradition.” There is no cost to participate in the festival, and the performance is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Wood at 717-468-3212 or search for “CHS Play-in-a-Day Fest 2021” on Facebook.
Mount Bethel Cemetery will be the site of Fête en Noir on Friday, Aug. 13.

explained, adding that the plays will be about eight to 15 minutes in length. “It’s a great exercise in thinking creatively and working under tight time constraints.” Some parameters will be in place for the plays, Wood said, but there will be a lot of opportunity to get creative. “Everybody will get a designated prop and a theme, as well as a starting sentence,” Wood noted, adding that participants can offer suggestions for the theme. “They have to use those things, but within that, they’re free to create. They can do comedy, they can do drama, they can include music. It can take any form.” Thespian Alexis Phillips encouraged people to come to the open house to learn more about the festival. “The open house will give people an example of what we’re going to be doing at the festival, and it will give them a visual representation of what to expect,” she said. Her sister, Alissa, agreed, adding,

The event will be held at the organization, 265 S. 10th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, Aug. 1. “Our goal is to have over 200 cars this year,” said Tammy Loughlin, executive director of the shelter. “We have had cars come from all over, and this year, we’ve opened it up to mopeds, motorcycles, all types of cars and trucks. We even had an ambulance last year.” The car show will also feature a giveaway drawing and basket giveaway, along with music and food.

“It’s a really fun day, and people have the chance to vote on a variety of categories like Best in Show or who’s done the most work on their car,” Loughlin stated. “It’s just a really interesting thing to see, and it’s fun to walk around and talk to the car owners and hear their stories. Some of these cars have been passed down from generation to generation.” This is the third year for the event, which benefits the catfocused shelter. Proceeds from the car show are used to care for animals looking for a forever home. “Right now, we are full. We have 120 cats and five dogs. We currently have a six-week waiting list for surrenders,” Loughlin said, noting that proceeds will also help See Cruisin’ pg 3

mysterious petroglyphs, which are shaped like animals. “We don’t know the meanings of these,” she said. In addition, the collection includes butcher blocks, duck decoys, and information about ice harvesting, a crucial business prior to refrigeration. The organization is associated with the Circle Legacy Center, a Native American heritage group with an emphasis on the arts, crafts, and culture of indigenous people, and with Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, which holds regular classes on animals such as bats, owls, and vultures. Saylor noted that part of her job is to identify and catalog area archaeological finds. “Once an item leaves the area, its cultural value is lost,” she explained. “That’s why the heritage center exists: so we can show people … what a wonderful heritage this whole place has.”

and brought in Saylor from Baltimore to bring new life to the historical displays at the center. Saylor, who is curator of the Indian Steps Museum in Airville and vice president of the Lower Susquehanna Archaeology Society Chapter 28, said she saw a real potential gem in the Blue Rock Heritage Center. “Washington Boro is very rich in archaeological history,” she noted. The current exhibit at Blue Rock Heritage Center, “Footprints Through Time,” takes visitors from the PaleoIndian Period to the present. “When you walk in, you understand the timeline, which is PaleoIndian the first 16,000 years,” she said, explaining that the earliest culture in the area is traced to nomadic people, followed by Shenk’s Ferry people. Among the artifacts on display are stone tools, spear tips, and pottery. Saylor has also created an exhibit of

According to Douts, the organization was founded after the location was purchased by the Lancaster Area Sewer Authority in 2002. “A group felt we had lost so much history,” said Douts, who added that the borough was the smallest in Lancaster County prior to becoming part of Manor Township in 1971. increase attendance this year, noting that the event helps the Friends group support the cemetery. Along with the admission charge, there will be other fundraising opportunities happening throughout the event, she stated. Proceeds from the Fête en Noir help maintain the cemetery, which covers a wide area of property. “The major cost we have is the upkeep of the lawn,” Hohenadel explained. “In addition to mowing, there’s a lot of trimming around all of the crypts and tombstones. We spend $14,000 a year on lawn care.” The Fête en Noir is made possible through the sponsorship of the American Legion Paul Revere Leber Post 372, the Chickies Rock Moose Family Center and the Columbia Fraternal Association, as well as the Columbia Lions Club and Kleen-Rite Corporation. Looking at the calendar this year, the Friends saw that a Friday the 13th will occur in August, and they thought it made the perfect date for the event. Participants should bring their own picnic food to the Fête en Noir and should also make reservations as a group, Hohenadel noted, adding, “We’ll reserve tables and seat people by their group, whether it’s a group of four or a group of eight, or whatever size.” Music will be provided by a DJ, and participants will have the opportunity to hit the dance floor or stroll the grounds and take in the cemetery’s beauty. “It will be a wonderful opportunity to have an outside picnic with friends or family in a unique setting,” Hohenadel stated. “It’s starting early enough that there will be enough daylight if you want to walk around through the cemetery and look at the interesting tombstones and statuary and enjoy the history that’s there, or you can just sit and socialize with your friends and enjoy the music.” The event was not held last year due to the pandemic, but it drew about 80 people in 2019, Hohenadel said. “We are very proud of our police department,” said Corina Mann, township manager. “They do so much for our community, so we wanted to let our community know that our police are here to help, they are friendly, and they are approachable.” Along with members of the Hellam Township Police Department, the Night Out will include representatives from the Hellam Fire Company and the Wrightsville Fire and Rescue Company as well as Susquehanna Valley EMS. “Our police department recently got a K-9, so we’ll be having K-9 demonstrations as well,” Mann said. The K-9 unit is funded wholly by fundraisers and donations, so the police will have merchandise for sale at the event to benefit the program. The municipal offices opened in their new facility in October, but because of the pandemic, there wasn’t an opportunity at the time for an open house, Mann noted, so tours of the new location will be offered at the Night Out. The event will also feature a variety of children’s events, including a

The campaign promotes police-community partnerships and seeks to build camaraderie while emphasizing neighborhood safety. Mann said the event offers an opportunity to socialize and get to know more about the organizations that serve the community. “Come out and join us and meet your local emergency service personnel, township personnel, township office staff, public works department and more,” she said. “It will be a fun-filled evening.”
