Providing beauty with native plants

During the height of the pandemic, Carolyn Livingston was inspired to make a difference in her community. “I started thinking, ‘What is this world going to be like for my grandchildren? Is there anything I can try to do to make a change?’” recalled the resident of St. John’s Herr Estate in Columbia.

When she received money from COVID relief funds, she decided to act. “I put my money where my mouth is,” she stated. “Why just talk about doing something if you’re not actually going to do it?”

Carolyn spearheaded an effort to transform an unused space at the retirement community into a garden full of native plants. She hoped the project would not only beautify the grounds of the facility but also inspire other people to consider planting native plants.

Carolyn reached out to Elyse Jurgen, owner and founder of Waxwing EcoWorks Co., a Lancaster-based organization with a mission of promoting ecological gardening

experiences, and she recruited a team from St. John’s as well as two of her grown children to help with the project.

In early fall 2021, the group - which included residents Anita Perrone and Audrey Hibner, St. John’s staff members Steve Weisser and Ed Rodriguez and Carolyn’s daughters

the garden that abuts an exterior wall of St. John’s personal care wings. “Given that it is a south facing slope, against a brick wall, the space is very dry and sunny. This makes for the perfect site conditions to grow a low-growing little bluestem meadow.”

Carolyn noted that the garden is always evolving, featuring new colors and flowers seasonally. “The residents love it,” she said. “They tell me they love to watch it because it keeps changing.”

Gwen Livingston and Susan Staugaard - gathered at St. John’s to plant 1,500 “plugs” or small plantings, all of which are native to this part of Pennsylvania. Jurgen selected 15 native species, including coneflowers, asters, wild petunia and butterfly weed.

“The native species that were selected for this plant palette were chosen based on the stark site conditions of the site,” Jurgen said of

Along with plants, the garden features several bee boxes, and Carolyn has noticed many varieties of bees pollinating the plants. That’s one of the many benefits of using native plants in a garden.

“Native plants pack the greatest punch for regenerating habitats and struggling wildlife populations,” Jurgen noted, adding that the monarch butterly is among these populations. “Indigenous plants to this region have co-evolved with treasured wildlife - birds, butterflies, etc. - so they can recognize it as a nutritional food source or as a

Don’t underestimate the power of a penny. That’s all it takes to have fun at the Summer Food and Fun Extravaganza Food Truck and Penny Carnival. The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Water’s Edge United Methodist Church, 471 Abel’s Road, Wrightsville.

This is the third year for the event, which offers a variety of family fun, said Lisa Miller, outreach coordinator. “ This year, we have some new games, and we’re going to

have a 22-foot slide from 3 Monkeys Inflatables,” she shared. “We’re also going to have a bubble machine, because kids love bubbles.”

Charming Balloons will provide balloon artistry, and face painting by Funny Faces will also be offered. Fun-E-Faces will feature caricatures, and the Craley Fire Department will on hand with equipment for kids to explore.

Food options will include The Kilted Griller, Maine Course Mobile, Dandelion Thyme, Premium Shaved Ice and ice cream from the East Prospect Lions Club.

Growing the garden

The Edible Classroom, a nonprofit based in Washington Boro, has been selected as one of United Way’s Level Up and Launch Fellows. Through the annual program, United Way offered a $25,000 grant and has committed further fundraising support to the Edible Classroom, as well as nine other local nonprofits.

In addition to the initial grant, United Way will match the funds that the Edible Classroom raises until Friday, Nov. 10. Beth Horst and Grace Julian, co-founders of the Edible Classroom, plan to use the increased support to strengthen the organization’s existing programs and to expand its impact in the area. “As we were considering how to deepen our investment in our school districts, we saw this grant as an opportunity to expand in the community while remaining in the classroom,” Horst said.

With the resources acquired through United Way’s program, the Edible Classroom will focus its attention on two projects: establishing a school-based community garden in the Columbia and Lancaster school districts. One of the goals of creating the gardens is to provide educational

opportunities for high school students in the form of paid internships, where the students will participate in the operation and maintenance of new programs. The gardens will also serve as a platform for many local school districts to offer science classes, gardening courses and career training.

At Hamilton Elementary School in School District of Lancaster, the Edible Classroom will expand the existing garden into an adjacent unused plot. The current garden is already being utilized for summer camps, community gatherings and garden education courses, but the expansion will allow for a larger space for events and easier public access to fresh produce.

The Edible Classroom also

plans to hold a series of workshops on site once the project is completed.

As the Edible Classroom progresses its project at Hamilton Elementary School, it is simultaneously working on a similar venture at Columbia High School and Middle School Hill Campus. Although the twin projects share the same goals, the undertaking in Columbia will focus in part on addressing food insecurity in the district. The food grown in the garden will be distributed to students’ families through a partnership with Columbia Borough.

The Edible Classroom is currently in the early stages of planning the project, and Julian and Horst hope to begin installing the infrastructure for each garden in

the fall. The nonprofit has also connected with local high schools to enlist the help of volunteer groups and those interested in becoming interns. “Right now, we’re just networking with community members to listen and learn from them,” Horst said. “We’re going to go through one portion at a time as we acquire the funds.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (Penn DOT) has posted signs designating a 10-ton weight restriction on the Route 462 Veterans Memorial Bridge (ColumbiaWrightsville Bridge) over the Susquehanna River connecting the boroughs of Wrightsville in York County and Columbia in Lancaster County. The sign posting officially implements the 10-ton limit established by the department on July 17.

The new restriction limits the weight of each vehicle to 10 tons except for emergency and other vehicles specifically permitted by PennDOT. Vehicles exceeding the posted weight limit should use Route 30, an 8.7-mile detour, or another alternative route. Truck detour signs for Route 462 were scheduled to be installed around the beginning of August to provide supplemental support for the new weight restriction.

The weight restriction was implemented after a routine

inspection uncovered deterioration to the primary load-carrying members of the open spandrel concrete arch spans along portions of the bridge. PennDOT is working toward interim repairs to the bridge and will re-evaluate the posting while repairs are being made.

The weight restriction was created to reduce strain on the bridge and thereby allow safe passage until more significant interim repairs can occur. Given the necessity to change the design scope of work on the bridge, inclusive of bridge deck, floor beam and column replacement, work on the bridge for the permanent condition is now not anticipated to occur until the summer of 2025.

The historic Route 462 bridge was built in 1930. Approximately 11,548 vehicles use the bridge daily, with about 601 trucks anticipated to be affected by this posting.

For more information about PennDOT and its projects, visit www.penndot.pa.gov.

but students from the theater department at the high school will pick their favorites as well.

A drawing, door prizes and a Chinese auction will also be held, and music for the event will be provided by Music2dance2radio. A variety of food vendors will also be on-site.

Money raised from the show will help offset the costs of putting on theater productions at the high school, Dave said, noting that the theater department offers a fall play and a spring musical annually.

“(The car) show is always well attended,” he noted. “We have a great turnout, and people have fun. Our trophies are unique as wellthey have drama masks on them.” Trophies will be sponsored by local business-

es and individuals.

Weaver said he looks forward to the show every year because he especially enjoys interacting with the theater students and other young people who come to the event.

“I’ll be out driving my car, and a kid will say, ‘I like your car,’ and I love that,” he said, noting that he drives a 1997 Geo Prizm with lifted tires as well as a 1963 Bel Air, among other vehicles. “I’d much rather have a kid say that to me than an adult.”

Show participants should enter the church at Anderson Ferry Road, and spectators should enter at Ore Mine Road. More information, including weather updates, may be found by searching for “Driving for Drama Benefit Car Show” on Facebook or calling 717-684-3600.

Penn State Extension to offer food preservation workshops

Penn State Extension, Lancaster County, will offer two home food preservation workshops.

The “Pressure Canning” workshop will be held on Monday, Aug. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m., and the “Introduction to Drying” workshop will be offered on Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon. The programs will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

Wounded Warrior Ride planned

The Saddlebag Riders Team of the Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries will host its annual Wounded Warrior Ride on Saturday, Aug. 12, with kickstands up at 10 a.m. The guided ride will begin and end at Bethany EC Church, 1165 Letort Road, Conestoga, and will travel through the countryside and several covered

bridges. It is approximately 50 miles and will take about 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete.

A donation is requested and will include food and drinks at the church after the ride. Proceeds will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. For more details, contact Chuck Moore at 717224-8790.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in home food preservation. Canning and drying are methods of food preservation that allow people to enjoy seasonal foods all year long. While these methods of home food preservation have existed for centuries, much has been learned about the science behind safe canning and drying methods.
