Putting For Miracles

Leisure Lanes, 3440 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, will host a mini golf tournament fundraising event Saturday, Aug. 13. The tournament, organized in association with the PlayYellow and Extra Life programs, will raise money to benefit the Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey as a part of the Children’s Miracle Network.

Registration has been scheduled for 9 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The tournament will have a set cost per player and a team maximum of four players, with availability for up to 36 teams total. Leisure Lanes will sell food and beverages at the event, which will be held on both the miniature course and the grass. Children must be age 10 or older to play on the latter. People of all ages and levels of experience are invited to participate, whether they are professional golfers or amateur players.

The Putting for Miracles tournament was conceived by Dave Chobanoff, a longtime participant in Extra Life, a Children’s Miracle Network program centered around raising money for children’s hospitals through games. Extra Life raises funds through its network of players and streamers as they stream online and facilitate fundraisers year-round. “A lot of people think the program involves video games only, but it includes any type of game,” said Chobanoff. “Anything from video games to board games to cornhole.” He first discovered the program and became involved with the Children’s Miracle Network when a friend invited him to participate in an event. “I said, ‘Hey, I’m game for that,’ no pun intended,” Chobanoff quipped. “I’ve met quite a few Miracle Children and families and gotten to watch them grow. I was captivated by the program.” Money raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is used in a variety of ways at member facilities; funds are distributed for research, patient services, advancement services, charitable care and hospital equipment. Member hospitals provide over $3 billion in charitable care annually for patients in need.

The mini golf event will also be held in association with PlayYellow, another Children’s Miracle Network program. PlayYellow has a similar goal as Extra Life, but it consists of golfers around the country who wish to support the cause. Participants include PGA Tour professionals, amateur golfers, tournaments and golf manufacturers; the only requirement for participation is a desire to contribute to children’s hospitals and treatment nationally.

Chobanoff has big plans for next year and hopes to return to Leisure Lanes for a second fundraiser. “I want to do something on a larger scale,” he said. “I’m already looking into sponsors and food trucks to support the event.”

Twelve holes have already been sponsored and a giveaway drawing will be available to participants. A member family of the Children’s Miracle Network will also speak at the tournament. To register or become a sponsor, email Chobanoff at padave78@gmail.com or visit https://bit.ly/CMNP4M22.

Event coordinator and Extra Life participant Dave Chobanoff decided to keep the tournament local and host it at Leisure Lanes.

Hay Hole Covers Available

Safe Kids Lancaster County, in collaboration with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health), is manufacturing and distributing free hay hole covers to the community. Funding was made available by the American Trauma Society - PA Division. Based upon recent data from LG Health, falls due to open hay holes are a recurring farming injury in children. Hay hole covers are intended to reduce severe injury and death due to falls. The covers must be installed and used correctly.

The hay hole covers come with all the required materials, are easy to assemble and install, and come with instructions. The covers are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and LG Health will deliver the covers to homes/farms.

To order hay hole covers, contact Lindsay Pringle at 717-5443807. Callers will need to provide their name, address and phone number as well as the number of covers requested and the number of children on the farm.

The celebration is an opportunity for members of the rescue to share everything the organization does - and potentially recruit new volunteers, Maxine noted. “We have a great crew here, but we’re always looking for younger kids to come in and help,” she said, adding that training begins in a junior program for high school students. “We want the community to know that we’ve been here for 75 years, serving and helping. We’re always on call, 24 hours a day.”

Lake Clarke Rescue provides services on the Susquehanna River, Lake Redman and other creeks and waterways. “We go out and help with flooded roads,” Maxine said. “We also do ice rescues. We work with the local fire companies, and we not only do rescue, but we also do recoveries.”

Maxine’s husband, Charles, was the chief of the rescue for many years. He passed away in 2021, but Maxine continues to volunteer because the organization meant so much to both of them. “He really took this to heart,” Maxine said. “Both of us have seen the caring of the people who are involved in the rescue, and both of us were on rescue for years and years. We know that the rescue makes a difference in the community.”

She encourages the public to come out to the anniversary celebration and learn more about the rescue’s history and importance in the region. “You can come and talk to our chief … or talk to any of our rescue members, ask questions and learn more about us,” she said. “Come out and enjoy the day, play some games, have fun and get to know what we’re all about.”
