FIA Provides Medical Care, Food
CWM
Friends In Action (FIA) International, a nonprofit organization located in Middletown, recently partnered with pastors in Bolivia to provide COVID-19 relief to indigenous people groups. Aid has included medical care, medical supplies and food. FIA uses infrastructure projects as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached indigenous people groups. Recent projects aided residents of the hundreds of tiny villages along the coasts
of the Amazon River, which are especially vulnerable to COVID-19. For most of the villagers, their town hospital has only 35 beds and one ventilator and is a multipleday journey by boat and on foot. Additionally, some villagers travel two days from their remote locations to find medicines such as acetaminophen. FIA’s field leaders, Donna and Gary Ferch, reported that close to 90% of FIA’s co-workers in the area have contracted the virus. See FIA pg 2

Schreiber Rubber Duckie Race Moves Online Center Receives Matching Grant According to Dan Fink, director of marketing and public relations for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, this is just the second time that Schreiber has received a $250,000 matching grant in its 84-year history, and both times it has come from the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. “This one comes at a critical moment for us as we work to navigate a COVID-19 world,” Fink
remarked. “Like many nonprofits, we’re facing a challenging period in the next 12 months.” See Schreiber pg 6
Schreiber’s 32nd annual Rubber Duckie Race will be virtual for the first time in its history. Souvenir duckies with a “Choose Your Own Adventure” theme will accompany ticket sales, which will end on Sept. 12. Ticket proceeds will be matched by a grant from the Stabler Foundation.

“The Returned Soldier” statue, depicting a World War I American soldier, is located at the Fifth and Locust streets entrance to Locust Street Park.
Local residents are invited to enjoy the outdoors this summer by visiting Locust Street Park in Columbia. Although it is legally considered private land owned by the Old Columbia Public Grounds Company (OCPGC), the park is open to the public, contingent to an organized group providing sufficient liability insurance and signing a lease agreement for its event. The park is open from dawn to dusk each day and is not to be used as game lands. The concept for the Old Columbia Public Grounds Company was established in 1788 when Samuel Wright, the town founder, wanted to create a lasting benefit for the citizens of the new town. For this purpose, Wright designated an area on the banks of the Susquehanna River that would be important to business as it provided access to the ferry, the shad batteries and the receivers of lumber and produce. The ground was available for use free of charge by everyone interested in river transportation up See Locust Street Park pg 4

One of the pastors participating in the relief efforts was pastor Saul. Wearing his mask and gloves, Saul began knocking on doors and distributing food and medical supplies funded in part by FIA donors. Going door-to-door to indigenous populations in the small towns and villages near Guayaramerin, Saul shared the Gospel and prayed with many villagers who already had COVID-19 and others who were afraid of catching it. Saul later contracted COVID-19 and experienced complications from the virus and diabetes. Among FIA’s efforts in Bolivia is El Misionero, a riverboat used to take medical personnel and the Gospel into unreached villages accessible only by the Amazon River. FIA began building the boat more than a decade ago, and each year, doctors, nurses, and dentists volunteer to treat more than 1,100 villagers for dewormings, prenatal care, minor surgeries, and vision and dental needs using the boat. One helper who worked on the boat was Medardo Rodriguez Dorado. Dorado championed the medical ministry for years by removing rotten wood, milling new timbers, and repairing the boat so it could be sailed it farther into the Amazon
jungle to reach additional villagers. Dorado was well-known by other villagers for being proficient with a chainsaw. He and his wife contracted COVID-19, and Medardo died from the disease in early June. FIA sent funds to help to provide food and medical care for Medardo’s widow and other widows. El Misionero’s first captain, pastor Manuel Bravo, also contracted COVID-19. Bravo is a national pioneer missionary who has also served as ministry outreach director partnering with FIA and an organization of seven evangelical Bible churches in Guayaramerin. Though in a high-risk category, he began moving toward recovery as a result of treatments provided by a team of volunteer doctors and nurses from El Misionero using medicines and intravenous therapy funded by donors to FIA. As the need is great, several churches and individuals have agreed to provide matching funds for donations up to $7,500. To donate before Saturday, Aug. 15, readers may visit www.fiaintl.org and select Bolivia Where Needed Most. Gifts will be used to provide intraveous therapy, breathing treatments, and medicine for those who are sick, as well as rice and beans for grieving families.

trict for the construction of the high school and later for the expansion and reconstruction of Park Elementary School. The OCPGC recently sold the River Park back to the Columbia Borough. In addition to the annual Memorial Day service, Locust Street Park is used for a variety of other events, including the annual Antique, Art and Craft Show sponsored by the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC); the Thunder on the River car and motorcycle show sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club and the SVCC; and movie nights sponsored by the Borough of Columbia Parks and Recreation Commission. St Paul Lutheran Church also uses the park on the second Sunday morning of September to conduct the annual 9/11 memorial service. The last event of the year is the Christmas tree lighting in December. The OCPGC is managed and maintained by a volunteer board of nine members. The board consists of president Andy Ohrel, vice president William Kloidt, secretary/treasurer Mark C. Zeamer and members Jack F. Markel, John C. Meshey, Steven O. Deets, Glenn D. Bachert, Jeff Seibert and Jack Gamby. The board receives maintenance assistance from the Columbia Park Rangers, the Columbia Lions Club and the Columbia High School National Honor Society. Each year, the OCPGC volunteer board sponsors a fundraising drive to assist in the upkeep of the park. The park or gazebo may be reserved for community events such as concerts, library events, auto shows and antique and craft Shows. Schreiber from pg 1 The grant will provide a dollar-for-dollar match for all the money raised by Schreiber starting June 11, when the Stabler Foundation forwarded its approval. Stabler has committed up to $250,000, and Schreiber has one year to raise the matching funds. The initial $250,000 grant combined with what Schreiber hopes to raise from the community would mean $500,000 for the local organization, matching the amount generated from a similar grant by the Stabler Foundation in 2016. That grant was the largest contribution toward adding an infant room to Schreiber’s Circle of Friends Academy child care center. “This grant couldn’t have come at a better time for Schreiber, said Schreiber president James DeBord. “Obviously, with everything happening around COVID-19, raising revenue is even more of a concern than usual. The community rallied around us, as it always does, these past three months, but we don’t know what challenges are ahead of us. This grant and the matching dollars it generates will give us a significant boost at a critical time in our fundraising. Schreiber has gradually phased in services in various departments. The softball weekend will be held from Friday to Sunday, Aug. 21 to 23, and the Golf Classic will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 21. “We will keep making adjustments as we go, DeBord said, “and we will keep telling our story. This place has been around for 84 years. I have faith that the staff, our leadership, and this community will do what’s necessary to make sure we’re still here on the other side of COVID. Additionally, Schreiber has moved its iconic Rubber Duckie Race online. This year’s race would have been the 32nd event, but the tens of thousands of racing ducks will not take their trip down the Conestoga River at Lancaster County Central Park. Instead, a special online duckie event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, to determine prize winners. Tickets went on
Schreiber has a new Duckie Mobile that will travel around Lancaster County selling duckies and bringing other excitement to neighborhoods. This year’s theme is “Choose Your Own Adventure and features some of the most popular souvenir duckies from recent years, including dinosaurs, unicorns, and cows. To honor health care heroes, doctors, nurses and other medical duckies are available as well. The Schreiber Center is a nonprofit organization that aims to offer the finest in innovative therapy, education, and recreation resources for children, teenagers, and young adults. COVID-19 prompted the shift to a virtual duckie race, and there will be other ways this year’s event will look different. Schreiber supporters are encouraged to purchase tickets online to limit personal contact during duckie transactions. Fun, new content, particularly contests and biographies of some of this year’s souvenir duckies, will be posted on the aforementioned website. Additionally,

Local couple Linda and Philip Malin has been photographing local furry and feathered family members for 30 years. However, the coronavirus pandemic challenged their business, which involved pet photography home visits and pet portrait events at local pet stores. They had to find a way to survive this crisis, so Linda came up with the idea to put pet photos on masks. Pet owners are invited to send the Malins an image by email or mail and then place an order for a Furry Face Mask at www.LindaAndPhilipMalin.com. Contact information for submitting photos is available on the aforementioned website. The Malins will tweak the photo, print it on a mask and mail it directly to the customer. Pet owners can have a photo of their bird, cat, dog or reptile heatsealed and imprinted on a comfortable, two-ply, 100% polyester mask that can be washed and air dried. Individuals may also ask for a breed-specific pet from the Malins’ stock photography. While the Malins are used to working with pet expressions, the Furry Face Mask is not limited to pets. Some customers have designed their own artwork to put on their masks. For example, a gardener put her flowers on her mask, a groom put his new bride on his mask, a golfer put “hole-in-one” and the date on his mask and a musician put his tuba on a mask. Artists of all ages have individualized a logo to wear while at work. Creative dragons and unicorns are a common image for children’s face masks. For more information, readers may visit the previously mentioned website or www.face book.com/malinscreativeconsultants. A fee is charged per mask; shipping is free.

The Junkluggers offers donation receipts and launched the Remix Market, a sister company to some of the Junkluggers franchishes, as a way to keep items out of landfills. The Junkluggers focuses on green, community-oriented practices and striving to enhance lives, the community and the environment by donating, recycling, upcycling and supporting local charities.
