Scorching hot temperatures gave Columbia High School (CHS) students a run for their money at band camp as they tirelessly rehearsed for the new fall show, “Under the Sea.” Band camp took place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from July 29 to Aug. 2 at the school and concluded with a preview show for the public on the evening of Aug. 2. Marching band director Daniel Stauffer said that he and other band staff members begin brainstorming ideas for the coming year’s show in January before settling on a theme that they believe they can portray well on the football field. “Under the Sea,” which Stauffer described as a darker show featuring sirens and

Eastern York Recreation Authority

mermaids, will include the songs “Uninvited” by Alanis Morissette, “La Mer” by Claude Debussy, and 2WEI’s arrangement of “Toxic” by Britney Spears, as well as an original composition by Columbia’s own Demetrius Archer, who instructs the band’s woodwinds section. Aside from performing the show during halftime at CHS football games, the band will participate in a total of six competitions for the Cavalcade of Bands. Last year, CHS placed second overall in the Independence Conference out of 16 school marching bands from the Mid-Atlantic Region. In addition, Stauffer was named 2018 Marching Band Director of the Year at the Cavalcade of Bands. See Marching Band pg 5

Columbia High School color guard captain Morgan Williams (left), brass section leader Juliana Anderson (center) and woodwinds section leader Stephanie Kuhns are looking forward to another successful season for the marching band, as the students will participate in six Cavalcade of Bands competitions.

Elizabethtown resident Naomi Fredlund (right) got to meet Miss Lieu (left) during a May trip to Vietnam with Brittany’s Hope. Fredlund and her company helped to raise nearly $15,000 to build homes for families in need in Vietnam through Brittany’s Hope, including one for Miss Lieu and her children.

As Elizabethtown resident Naomi Fredlund anticipated the five-year anniversary of her company, Life Changes Realty Group, she envisioned a celebration that could somehow involve all of the business’s clients. One agent suggested doing a larger-scale version of the payit-forward program that Life Changes operates, and Fredlund loved the idea. T h r o u g h p a y - i t - fo r w a r d , L i f e Changes real estate agents donate a portion of their commission earned when a deal is closed to the charity of the client’s choice. According to Fredlund, that has led to more than $350,000 being donated to various charities thus far. A fundraising endeavor independent of pay-it-forward, however, would be new for the company. The 25 members of the Columbia High School marching band rehearsed the band’s new show, “Under the Sea,” during camp at the school from July 29 to Aug. 2.

R044666

The majority of this year’s band members are underclassmen, making it somewhat of a regrouping year, but the students are determined and optimistic about having another successful season. “I’m hoping (the audience) can see how good we are for being such a young band,” said color guard captain Morgan Williams. “We do have a lot of new students, so we’re working on making sure they’re not getting discouraged and hopefully we can set them up (to do well) next year.” Brass section leader Juliana Anderson said the marching band is already very close-knit. “We can be really goofy but also get a lot done,” remarked Juliana, who plays trumpet. To spice things up for the long days of band camp, Morgan, Juliana, and woodwinds section leader and saxophonist Stephanie Kuhns planned Spirit Days for the week, which included dressing for daily themes of America, mismatch, pink, tourists, and crimson and gold. In addition to Morgan, Juliana, and Stephanie, the other CHS 2019 marching band members and their instruments include - flute: Anonya Bland and Alexis Phillips; clarinet: Erin Herman, Nevaeh Kilby, Kirsten Resch, and Taylor Siltzer; saxophone: Braden Strawser; trumpet: Seth Reece; mellophone: Allie Unkow; baritone: Madison Hedgepeth; bass clarinet: Chris Sabino; percussion: Trenton Garza, Emma Grove, Rose Misciagna, Alayna Morales, Ashton

Brittany’s Hope from pg 1

In May, a group from Elizabethtown College and the community traveled with Elizabethtown-based nonprofit Brittany’s Hope to Vietnam to help build a new house (right photo) to replace a collapsing mud house for a family in need. When it came to selecting a recipient, Fredlund immediately thought of Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit that aims to help orphaned and at-risk children through international special needs adoption

One of the homes built was for Miss Lieu, a young widow with two children living in a mud house with a collapsed roof. She had originally approached Brittany’s Hope about needing to place her children in one of the organization’s homes for children, as she was lacking means to repair the home, pay medical bills from her husband’s illness, and cover living expenses. Instead, Brittany’s Hope was able to build Miss Lieu a new home, complete with a sturdy roof to endure the rainy season as well as a bathroom, which the old house did not have. In spite of the language barrier, Fredlund connected with Miss Lieu and her children. “The hope (Miss Lieu) had was amazing to see. When I was there, she was glowing,” Fredlund shared. “One of the translators, (Le Thi Tu) Hong, said, ‘Their lives are forever changed,’ and that really stuck with me.” Fredlund also got to meet the two children that she sponsors through the Brittany’s Hope child sponsorship program. “It was one of the highlights of my life to see those families,” described Fredlund. In the future, Fredlund would like to return to Vietnam with her colleagues and others interested in helping. “Brittany’s Hope went above and beyond. I’ve been on a lot of trips and very few of them were run as well as Brittany’s Hope,” remarked Fredlund. “My goal is to help other businesses that want to give back.” For more information on Brittany’s Hope, readers may visit www.brittanyshope.org. Registration is open for the 2019 Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk, which is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14.

grants and humanitarian initiatives. “Being an adoptive mom myself, their mission obviously resonates with me,” said Fredlund. “And another thing I love about Brittany’s Hope is that every penny goes to the children and not to administrative costs.” Fredlund serves on the board of Brittany’s Hope and approached executive director Mai-Lynn Sahd about potential projects that Life Changes could help with. Sahd suggested building a house for a family in need. “It was the perfect opportunity for us as a real estate company - a perfect fit,” Fredlund said. Fredlund and her colleagues set a goal of raising $7,500 - a bit more than the approximately $5,000 needed to build one house through Brittany’s Hope in Vietnam. Through advertising the initiative on social media, sharing with clients, and participating as a team in the Brittany’s Hope 2018 Walk of Love fundraiser, Life Changes raised nearly $15,000. That meant Life Changes was able to contribute toward building homes for two families. In May, Fredlund and her husband and two adult children accompanied a group of Elizabethtown College students and professors, as well as other community members, on a trip to Vietnam to help with the building project. Sahd noted that the organization is judicious in the building process, allowing international volunteers to contribute to some parts of the project while still ensuring that the work is done by local residents so as not to take away economic opportunities. Anyone whom the organization builds a home for contributes something whether labor, finances, or something else - toward completing the project.

The Bethel United Methodist Church, 1674 Furnace Road, Brogue, will hold its annual picnic on Thursday, Aug. 8, starting at noon. Town Talk To Focus On Local Millionaire

Young adults from Aaron’s Acres and Allstate agency owners and staff members Karen Hershman (far left), Vera Boak (second from left), Shelly Santoni (fourth from left), John Mellish (fourth from right) and Meredith Allen (second from right) recently hosted an ice cream social for residents of Pleasant View Retirement Community. Five Allstate agency owners and agency staff members recently volunteered with Aaron’s Acres, mentoring older teenagers with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Together, Allstate volunteers and the young adults planned and hosted an ice cream social for residents of Pleasant View Retirement Community. Thanks to its volunteerism, Aaron’s Acres will receive a $5,000 Allstate Foundation Helping Hands Grant. Aaron’s Acres will use these funds to support its year-round therapeutic programs for children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. According to Maria Kapsak, community outreach coordinator at Aaron’s Acres, some of the funds will go toward the cost of camp for children whose families may be unable to afford it.

Aaron’s Acres provides individuals with disabilities ages 5 to 21 years old with year-round therapeutically based and ageappropriate recreational programs. These programs are directed by specially trained and certified staff members in a supportive environment and aim to enhance socialization and communication skills. Aaron’s Acres is one of thousands of organizations this year to receive Allstate Foundation Helping Hands Grants secured by agency owners, personal financial representatives and licensed sales professionals on behalf of the nonprofits where they volunteer. The grants support organizations addressing domestic violence, youth empowerment, disaster preparedness, hunger and other causes. See Socialpg 8

The second Wednesday in August will once again see the occurrence of the Salunga Community Picnic. The 78th annual event will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the Hempfield Fire Department Pavilion in Salunga Park, located next to the fire station, 19 W. Main St., Landisville. Although the picnic is named for its location, attendance is open to everyone, regardless of residency. “There’s this (wrong) idea that you have to live in Salunga to come. You can live in Landisville to come. You can live anywhere. Invite your neighbor. That’s the whole point,” said Karen Haldeman, who has taken over coordinating the picnic from Stacey Cooper. Cooper had been the coordinator for an estimated 10 years and remains on the picnic committee. “I don’t want to see the picnic go away,” Haldeman said to explain her willingness to assume leadership of the event. Cooper and Haldeman have worked together on the picnic committee, which is always open to new members. “We need more volunteers,” Cooper added. “People say they like (the picnic), but it’s hard to get help. We feel like the event fails or succeeds on us. We need more community in our community event.” The picnic will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with the women’s games, which have been changed to include anyone over age 13. When the first picnic was held on Aug. 6, 1941, the schedule included dozens of games for women and children. “Women didn’t have jobs, and kids were out of school, so they had time to play,” Cooper explained. “Now we come from work, pick

up a pizza at Hot Z, and show up late,” Haldeman quipped. The opening games will be organized by Jen McFarland Swope, who lives two hours away. She is filling in for her cousin, who is on vacation. “(Swope) said it’s kind of like a family reunion for her (to come back to the area where she grew up),” Haldeman related. Children’s games are slated for 5:30 p.m., although the committee is still looking for someone to organize that activity. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Attendees should bring their own meals and place settings. The picnic committee will provide ice cream, chips, and beverages. This year, the after-dinner schedule has been slightly adjusted. Door prize winners will be announced throughout the evening instead of only at the end. They will be interspersed with a children’s peanut scramble at 6:45 p.m., a cake walk at 7 p.m., the announcement of guessing game winners at 7:45 p.m., and special games at 8:15 p.m. Local businesses have donated items for the door prize drawing, and everybody who attends will receive an entry. “We request a dollar, but it’s not required to get a ticket for the door prizes,” Cooper said. “We appreciate a donation. They help to keep the picnic going.” The committee also raises funds through prize drawings for themed baskets. This year’s baskets are slated to include a backto-school theme from the Landisville Church of God, another theme, and a surprise. The Salunga Community Picnic will be held rain or shine. Folks who would like to volunteer to help with the event may call Haldeman at 717-898-0989.
