Summer Soiree will benefit Susquehanna National Heritage Area

Helpsupport the programs and projects of the Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) while enjoying a night out at the Summer Soiree. The event will be held on Friday, Aug. 18, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the River Room at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville.

“We will have some really great catered food, a cash bar and some samples from area vineyards and breweries,” said Bill Wright, director of community giving for SNHA. “We’ll have live jazz music from Tom Pontz, and we’ll have a silent auction with items and experiences related to SNHA.” Auction items will include a sunset cruise for 12 on the Chief Uncas, SNHA’s vintage 1912 electric vessel; a weekend getaway at Rock Lititz Hotel; art from a local artist; a guided hike

Class will teach mindful movement

Sore muscles led Andrew Horn to develop a class to help others improve their movement. Horn, the farm manager of Horn Farm for Agricultural Education, witnessed the physical demands his body endured while working in the farm field and forest. “After a few years of heavy work and repetitive tasks, I wanted to find movements or

exercises that helped to prepare my body for those tasks and also recover,” he said. “I did not find a typical workout in the gym to be helpful with the array of dynamic demands one might be confronted with at a place like the Horn Farm, so I started to incorporate things like MovNat (natural movement), yoga, bodyweight exercises and injury prevention exercises.”

Horn will take what he’s learned

into Hellam Hills Nature Preserve by Lancaster County Conservancy plus a wine and cheese reception; and a variety of regional goods and services.

All proceeds from the evening will benefit SNHA, which seeks to preserve, enhance and promote the history and natural resources of America’s 55th National Heritage Area, Wright said. “This event will help support all of our educational programs and our efforts to promote this area and its resources,” he commented.

“Heritage tourism is a big economic engine in America. People are always looking for local history, regional history and things to do and experience.”

A major focus of SNHA is the Susquehanna River, which Wright called the “primary geological and historical feature of our area.”

Holding the event at John

Wright Restaurant is especially appropriate, he noted, because the site overlooks the river. “It’s a special location, on the second floor, and it offers a really beautiful view of the river and the Memorial Bridge between Columbia and Wrightsville,” he said.

Along with food and entertainment, the Summer Soiree will feature an opportunity for people to hear updates from SNHA on current projects as well as information about future projects.

“The Summer Soiree is a nice way for people to directly support what we’re doing, meet some really interesting people and talk to people who are making SNHA possible,” Wright remarked.

Tickets are available on a firstcome, first-served basis. To purchase tickets for the Summer Soiree, visit https://susqnha.org/ programs/snha_soiree.

SPCA clinic

recognized

The York County SPCA’s high-volume, low-cost clinic is dedicated exclusively to spay/neuter surgeries in York County. The work of the clinic is a critical component of how the YCSPCA achieves its mission to serve York County people and pets. In 2015, Dr. Kimberly Mann joined the YCSPCA as a clinic veterinari-

an and later became the clinic medical director. Supporting her, and leading the team of veterinary technicians, is veterinary operations manager Brett Knickel, who joined the YCSPCA in 2021. Under their leadership, the clinic has continued to shatter records each year for the number of surgeries the team performs and the impact it has on the lives of animals in York County.

The spay/neuter clinic was built in 2012-13 and officially opened to the community in July 2013. The veterinarians and veterinary technicians working in the clinic at that time received instruc-

tion at the Humane Alliance in Asheville, N.C., a high-volume clinic that provides training for veterinary staff in high-volume spay/neuter techniques and mentors new clinics.

Since opening its doors, the York clinic has performed more than 75,000 spay/ neuter surgeries. Last year alone, the clinic performed a record-breaking 10,021 surgeries, 6,298 of which were on community cats. This milestone puts the YCSPCA Spay/Neuter Clinic in the top 0.2% most productive spay/ neuter clinics in the country.

clinic administered 8,170 rabies vaccines; these vaccinations help to protect both animals and humans, as rabies can be deadly to humans if contracted. Microchipping is also available at the clinic.

The YCSPCA Spay/ Neuter Clinic operates Mondays to Fridays and provides walk-in TrapNeuter-Return services Mondays through Thursdays. More information about services and appointment scheduling is available at https://ycspca.org/ programs-services/spay neuter-clinic/.

and teach it to others in Functional Movement for Everyday Life. The class will be held on Thursday, Aug. 17, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Horn Farm, 4945 Horn Road, York.

Horn taught the farm’s first class of this type earlier this summer, and he plans to use this year’s series of classes as a trial run to shape the design of future classes.

say these technologies aren’t ever needed,” he said, “but I think communities can cultivate a high degree of resilience from climate, energy and economic pressure by having a workforce of highly capable land stewards.”

Lancaster County Planning will host a webinar screening on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at noon in the HR Training Room on the third floor of the Lancaster Government Building, 150 N. Queen St., Lancaster.

The webinar will share information about Pennsyl-

vania WalkWorks, a program the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) has been working on since 2013. The DOH has worked with various partners to improve public health outcomes with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to increase physical

activity. Initially, the program focused on developing walking routes and groups, eventually including 100 routes established in municipalities across the state.

In the upcoming webinar, Justin Lehman, the DOH lead on the WalkWorks Program, and Sam Pearson from the Pennsylvania Downtown Center, a current WalkWorks partner organization, will provide information and

insights into the lessons learned over the more than 10 years of the program.

The moderator will be Peter Wulfhorst, an educator with Penn State Extension. This webinar is part of the Penn State Extension Land Use Webinar series.

Space is limited. To reserve a spot, search for “Pennsylvania WalkWorks” at www.eventbrite.com.

“I will be leading folks in breathing exercises and ground movements that help develop a comfortability in the many different positions one could experience in, for instance, a garden setting,” he explained. “Ground movement is foundational in MovNat and is truly applicable across all domains of life because of the mobility it can provide. I will also be demonstrating effective and efficient ways to lift and carry objects, both light and heavy. We’ll plan to do some sled drags and farmer’s carries as well. To finish things off, we’ll do some cooldown and recovery stretches.”

Horn believes in the need for more people to use their bodies and minds in the business of regenerative agriculture and woodland restoration rather than using largescale heavy machinery powered by fossil fuels. “Not to

He said anyone can benefit from the class, noting, “Movement isn’t optional. Even when we are sitting, our bodies are experiencing what some call a ‘load.’ Our bodies adapt to the different loads we subject them to, so if we aren’t moving mindfully and skillfully, we experience breakdown and injury.”

The class is free and very loosely structured, Horn emphasized, and he wants people to take away a new or renewed interest in the power of movement. “My hope is that class participants develop a ‘movement lens’ with which to view the world,” he shared. “I hope that new perspective shows them where they can start to implement what they’ve learned and gives them the inspiration to be creative and explore what an ideal movement practice looks like for them specifically.”

“Twilight Pond Walk” workshop set

returning from last year, and it’s all held in the outfield of the Hellam ball fields,” Kokiko stated.

The carnival will conclude with a fireworks display on Saturday. Fireworks sponsors include Klinge Corp., Delta Packaging, Den’s Service Center and Toomey Auction Service/Kreutz Creek Lions Club.

Kokiko noted that the carnival would not be possible without the support of sponsors and volunteers, and he added that organizations are welcome to set up booths and tents to promote and raise funds for their missions. “We are looking to grow our list of sponsors for next year’s carni-

val as well as grow our nonprofit tents for organizations and groups looking to do a fundraiser of their own,” he remarked.

He also noted that the carnival volunteers are getting older and may want to retire from volunteering within the next few years. “We are looking for volunteers who are willing to help with setting up the carnival grounds and running the funnel cake stand,” he said. People who are interested in learning more may contact Kokiko at lkokiko harc@gmail.com. More information on the carnival may be found by searching for “2023 Hellam Carnival” on Facebook.

Tools 4 School will offer backpacks and supplies

The faces of the kids who come to the Tools 4 School giveaway say it all, said Suzette McCarty, who is organizing the event. “You can see how much the kidsand the parents - appreciate it,” she noted about the backpack and school supply giveaway at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marietta. “School supplies are so expensive, and when you have a family with three, four or five kids, it really hits them hard.”

The church, located at 1290 River Road, Marietta, will hold its annual Tools 4 School giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. “Kids can come in and pick out a backpack, and we have different colors, different sizes,” McCarty noted. “Then we have school supplies, and they can go down the line to

fill their backpack. We have pocket folders, tablets, colored pencils, crayons, markers, pencils, pens, rulers, erasers.” Children may also browse used books and take a book home for free.

This is the church’s 15th year for the giveaway, which is always well-received by the community, McCarty said. She estimates that about 120 children received backpacks and school supplies last year.

“We want to be sure everyone has the tools they need to succeed in school,” McCarty remarked. “This is a great opportunity to help your children get ready for school.”

There is no registration for the giveaway, she noted, adding that people can just show up on the day of the event. Supplies and backpacks are donated by congregation members, as well as community members and organizations. Zion’s frater-

nal insurance agency, Thrivent, provides financial assistance to purchase supplies as well.

Tools 4 School is one of the main ministry programs at Zion. The other program is Prime Time, held at noon on the first Tuesday of the month. Open to adults in the congregation and the community, the program provides lunch followed by bingo

with prizes.

Both Prime Time and Tools 4 School allow the church members to play an active role in Marietta. “It’s important for us to reach out and connect with our community,” McCarty said.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church holds worship services at 10:15 a.m. on Sundays. For more information, visit www.zionmarietta.org.

Create Columbia will present its third Invitational Postcard Art Exhibit. Artists from around the world are invited to mail their original art postcard for inclusion in the exhibit. Entries will be used as a fundraiser for Create Columbia.

Several guidelines have been created for submissions. A postcard-size artwork or two should be created using any medium, such as painting, collage, illustration, photography, or mixed media. Postcards must be sent via

postal service (as a postcard) and should not be contained within an envelope. This year’s suggested theme is “It’s About Time.” Artists need not include a return address on their postcard art, but Create Columbia suggests that artists add their website address, as visitors to the exhibit may wish to see more of the artist’s creations.

Postcard art submissions should be mailed to CC Postcard Art 2023, P.O. Box 328, Columbia, PA 17512. The submission deadline is

Thursday, Aug. 24.

The entries will be exhibited at the National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, from Saturday, Aug. 26, to Saturday, Sept. 2. The museum’s business hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

All displayed entries will available for bid via a silent auction throughout the exhibition period. The closing reception and announcement of winning bids will be

held at the museum on Sept. 2, beginning at 2 p.m. Bidding will close promptly at 4 p.m.

Income derived from winning bids will go toward continuing operating costs of Create Columbia, a 501(c)(3) organization. No postcard art will be returned, and the artworks may be included in future fundraising efforts by Create Columbia.

Scouts refurbish Little Free Library

Girl Scout Troop 70620, based in Columbia, adopted the little library at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center in July. The library, housed in an old newspaper dispenser box, was previously cared for by the Columbia Borough School District. It is a registered Little Free Library.

Troop 70620 refurbished the library with the help of a local welder. The modifications involved sandblasting,

painting, fabricating a new shelf, and replacing the acrylic glass. The troop decorated the inside and outside of the library with the official Girl Scout logo, as well as stickers related to Girl Scouts and reading. The Scouts also stocked the library with books for children.
