Soiree On The Susquehanna “A lot of people think the Susquehanna River divides Lancaster and York counties, but I like to think of it as a zipper,” said Bill Wright, director of community giving for Susquehanna National Heritage Area (NHA). “It’s a connector. It brings us together.” The river will take center stage when Susquehanna NHA holds its Summer Soiree Redux beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. The event will take place at River’s Edge at Long Level, 1829 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. Organizers are calling it a “Redux” because last year’s event had to be canceled, Wright explained, noting the Summer Soiree is an opportunity to raise funds for the organization while also highlighting the history and culture of the region. The event will feature pontoon boat rides on the Susquehanna, David Kinser (left) and James “Boomer” Weaver are organizing the Driving 4 Drama Benefit Car Show.

That year, the car show featured more than 100 cars, and Kinser hoped to repeat the event last year but had to cancel it due to the pandemic. “I’m excited to get back to it,” he stated. “I know there are a lot of

people who have cars they want to show off. We had 121 cars enter the first year, and we’re hoping to get twice that many this year.” Any car, truck or motorcycle may be entered in the show, which features 17 participant-judged categories. Additional categories will be judged by car professionals, and the Director’s Choice category will be judged by Columbia High School

People thought those were really cool since it benefits the theater club.”

Board, provided the students with the opportunity to meet with female construction industry leaders, visit job sites of local contractors and learn beginner trade skills. During the week, the campers used the knowledge and training they gained to create their own steampunk-themed, lighted charging station.

Over the course of the camp, attendees worked together as a team while discovering the career opportunities that the construction industry provides. They were taught basic safety skills, blueprint reading, electrical wiring, carpentry, plumbing, and more under the guidance of ABC Keystone’s apprentices, instructors, mem-

bers, and staff members. ABC Keystone is committed to building awareness of the opportunities in the industry, and next year, the chapter hopes to expand the camp’s outreach into the surrounding counties of ABC Keystone’s 11-county footprint. live jazz from the Tom Pontz Trio, food and beverages and a silent auction. “We’ll have more than 40 items,” Wright noted. “We’ll have things like river experiences, boat rentals, paddleboard lessons, artwork and more.” The soiree will kick off the 20th anniversary celebration of the organization being recognized as a state heritage area, Wright said, adding that a variety of activities are planned all weekend for the anniversary. In 2019, Susquehanna Heritage was designated as a national heritage area and has made the Susquehanna River the centerpiece of its programming. The organization operates the Zimmerman Center for Heritage in Wrightsville and manages the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center in Columbia. Offering programming on both sides of the river works well with Susquehanna NHA’s mission of promoting outdoor fun and cultural discovery. “Lancaster and York counties share a lot of things in terms of culture, heritage, geology and history,” Wright said. “ We’re working on

developing partnerships with other groups in the area that align with our mission.” Along with providing field trip opportunities, lecture series, outdoor programming and more, Susquehanna NHA is an economic driver for the region, he stated, as it brings in tourists for events and activities. The Summer Soiree will help Susquehanna NHA continue its educational programming and fund upcoming events and major projects. “Coming to the soiree is a way to support an organization that is working to preserve and conserve our heritage as well as promote the region as an economic engine,” Wright remarked. “It will be a fun evening to come out, enjoy some food and live music and take a boat ride at a gorgeous place. And you’ll be helping us continue to support and promote the culture and heritage of this area.” For more information on the Summer Soiree, visit www.susquehannaheritage.org or email Wright at wwright@susquehanna heritage.org.

Along with cars, the show will feature music from a DJ; food trucks, including Farm Show milkshakes; vendors; and a Chinese auction. “We’ll have kids from the theater program helping out, and we’ll have some other extracurricular clubs participating, too,” Kinser stated. Proceeds will help the booster club support the theater department’s operating expenses. Kinser, who owns South 16th Street Garage in Columbia, has been the theater set director for more than 10 years, and all three of his sons have participated in the theater

program. He is also active with local theater companies, including Rivertown Theatre Productions. “ Whether you’re a car enthusiast or you just want to support the drama department, it’s going to be a great day,” he remarked. “Come out and have some fun.” Preregistration will be accepted for the show, but participants can also register cars on site the day of the event. The car show will be held rain or shine. For more information, leave a message at 717-615-3372 or search for “Driving for Drama Benefit Car Show” on Facebook.

Leaders Commit To Initiative Five community leaders have made a commitment to end child sexual abuse in York County by giving their employees opportunities to participate in the Stewards of Children training offered by the York County Safe and Healthy Communities Initiative through the York County Children’s Advocacy Center. The five individuals are Vicky Diamond, president of WellSpan York Hospital; JT Hand, president and CEO of The York Water Company; Pamela Gunter-Smith, president of York College of Penn-

sylvania; Anne Druck, president and CEO of United Way of York County; and Dave Sunday, York County district attorney. The two-hour Stewards of Children training teaches participants how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child abuse. The training, offered at no cost, is available to any adult. The aforementioned leaders and their companies were featured in a campaign series that can be found at https://ouryorkmedia .com/superheroes-for-york -county-kids/.

The goal of York County Safe and Healthy Communities is to train 5% of the adult population in York County, which is about 17,000 people. As of Aug. 2, the organization had trained about 1,800 people. Melissa Page, the York County prevention coordinator for the Safe and Healthy Communities Initiative, and Deb Harrison, executive director of the York County Children’s Advocacy Center, are encouraging employers; church leaders; members of nonprofits, neighborhood associations, civic groups, or

school districts; and others, whether they are parents or not, to take the training. York County was awarded a competitive grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency to partner with the Child Maltreatment Solutions Network at Penn State University and other local organizations for the Safe and Healthy Communities Initiative. More information about the initiative is available at www.solutions network.psu.edu/prevention -trial/efforts-to-prevent -child-sexual-abuse.

Educators Attend OLNI Trainings school districts of Conestoga Valley, Ephrata Area, and Columbia Borough in addition to the Lancaster County Conservation District, Stroud Water Research Center, the

Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and Millersville University. Educators from each entity participated in environmental literacy events that can be implemented in classrooms at every level. This summer, the group met for two weeks - one week in June and one week in July. Teachers from each of the three school districts participated in a wide range of environmental literacy learning events and projects that are scalable from the elementary classrooms to high school classes. From determining the health of a stream via chemical water testing to an accounting of macroinvertebrates - bugs

in the water - to computer tools that delineate watersheds and even augmented reality stream tables, educators had a wide range of educational options from which to choose during the sessions. Teachers were also given time to work collaboratively to develop systemic environmental literacy learning to enhance what is already accomplished in the schools. The grant was funded by the Pisces Foundation, Chesapeake Bay Trust, Chesapeake Bay Office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Chesapeake Bay Funders Network.

Antlerless Hunting License Sales Start The 2021-22 general hunting licenses are on sale throughout Pennsylvania. The transaction fees have increased for all hunting licenses, as have the costs of an antlerless deer license for Pennsylvania residents and for nonresidents. The York County Treasurer’s Office began accepting resident antlerless deer applications by mail only on July 12. Any checks received for the wrong amount will be returned and will go unprocessed, jeopardizing the hunter’s choice of WMU. Applicants should write a separate check for each

license when sending multiple license applications in a single envelope. Another new rule is that hunters may now apply for and obtain up to six antlerless deer licenses before the start of hunting seasons for any wildlife management unit (WMU) in which licenses remain available. Hunters statewide are limited to holding six unfilled antlerless deer licenses at a time, but hunters may obtain no more than three antlerless deer licenses during the initial mail-in rounds. Each hunter will qualify for at least three additional

licenses at the time over-thecounter sales begin, although licenses in many WMUs are expected to be sold out by Monday, Sept. 13. Hunters who obtain six antlerless deer licenses may apply for additional licenses, if available, as they harvest deer and report them. Hunters who report harvests online through www.huntfish.pa.gov or call the customer support line at 800-838-4431 instantly become eligible to purchase another license, if any are available. Those reporting by mail will not be eligible to buy another license until their

report is logged. The last day to purchase a landowner antlerless deer license was July 9. For more information, call the York County Treasurer’s Office at 717-771-9603.

golf bag, a Darius Rucker autographed acoustic guitar, a balloon ride for two, and more. Only a portion of the dogs that go through the training process provide mobility assistance. The others go to work as facility dogs or become pets. Several UDS Service Dogs interact with children in schools and with clients in a counseling office near Philadelphia. Currently, the organization is creating a pilot program to work with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and train dogs to assist them, and child advocacy centers are on the waiting list for support canines. At the golf tournament, the organization will premiere a video highlighting the Pups in Prison Program. In the program, 4-month-old puppies go to maximum security prisons for training with carefully screened inmates. The program gives inmates the opportunity to give back to their communities, as well as the chance to enjoy the affection

and companionship that dogs are so eager to share with their humans. The video will focus on the story of one dog raised by an inmate who was released and currently resides in Canada. The dog is now serving in a school district. The video will show viewers how the Pups in Prison Program impacted the inmate’s life and the lives of those that the dog now serves. “If you’re a golfer, this a beautiful way to come out and support a worthy cause and the efforts of the UDS service dog program,” said Lori Breece, manager of the Service Dog Training Program at UDS. “I’ve seen miracles with the power of a pup. It’s quite amazing to see how lifechanging a dog can be.” Preregistration is required for the golf tournament and must be completed by Friday, Aug. 13, at www.udservices.org/golf21. Anyone who would like to support UDS Service Dogs by sponsoring the golf outing may contact Breece at lorib@udservices.org.
