The Eastern York marching band, made up of 55 students in grades seven through 12, participated in 10-hour days of band camp at the school from July 29 to Aug. 9. The band will perform “Things That Go Pop” at football games and in competitions with the Independence Division of Cavalcade of Bands Marching Circuit.

“Band camp is very difficult and it takes a lot of effort, but you get out of it what you put into it,” said Eastern York marching band president Sarah Carbery, who is a senior at Eastern York High School (EYHS) and plays trumpet. She was among the 55 members of the Eastern York marching band who prepared for their new show, “Things That Go Pop,” during two weeks of camp at the high school from July 29 to Aug. 9. Drum major Abbie Wood, an EYHS junior who plays clarinet, said that for the past several years the marching band has done darker shows, but “Things That Go Pop” is a lighter, happier theme. The first movement features Katy Perry’s song “Firework,” followed by the second movement titled “The Question.” “It’s all about popping the question, so it’s kind of a ballad

romance thing,” described Abbie. Pop culture is the focus of the third movement. “I think the audience will like that they’ll recognize different tunes in there, like ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’ and ‘99 Red Balloons’ and of course Katy Perry’s ‘Firework,’” said Abbie. Sarah said that she too is really excited for this year’s show. “Whenever the low brass plays the ballad, I feel it in my bones,” said Sarah. “It’s very pretty.” The marching band members persevered through 10-hour days filled with a predictably unpredictable summertime mix of scorching heat, humidity, overcast skies, and occasional thunderstorms. “A lot of times the weather can be really bad, but you get used to it,” said Sarah. “And we’ve had a lot less people complaining this year.” “We’re very positive,” agreed EYHS senior Jake Kennell, who plays marimba and is a percussion section leader. Experiencing A Growing Adventure The Edible Classroom Wraps Up Fruitful Summer By Chelsea Peifer

From July 29 to Aug. 2, students from the School District of Lancaster (SDoL) met in the garden at Hamilton Elementary School for a Garden to Table camp led by Beth Horst, who along with Grace

Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, will offer a class on roasting vegetables from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20. There is a cost to attend. For details and registration, contact educationdirector@hornfarmcenter.org or 717-332-8710. HOMELESS OUTREACH

Waltz Takes Part In Research Project Abbi Waltz of Columbia is one of 16 Albright College students from various academic disciplines conducting Albright Creative Research Experience (ACRE) projects over the summer of 2019. Through ACRE projects, undergraduate students conduct research or pursue creative endeavors outside of regular semester sessions. Student proposals must be accepted by a faculty review board and are rewarded with college stipends. Many collaborative teams of students and faculty present their research at academic conferences and publish their results in professional journals. Majoring in biology at Albright, Waltz is working with professor of biology Stephen G. Penn Manor High School and Warfel Construction will host a “Careers in Construction Exploration Event” for parents and students from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the construction site on the high school campus, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. During the event, participants will tour the site and learn about construction careers, including the roles of carpenters, electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, project managers, virtual design coordinators, drone pilots, and construction superintendents. The event is not limited to Penn Manor students and is open to any student in grades seven to 12. Student attendees must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The deadline to register is Monday, Sept. 9. To register, readers may visit www.warfelcc.com/student_tour. Sept. 14 will not be the first time Warfel and the high school have collaborated. For Penn Manor High School students and staff members, the massive construction project that began this past year at the school brought parking restrictions, relocated classrooms, and the constant din of heavy equipment just outside classrooms and offices. It also provided opportunities for students to learn about real-world math, engineering, and design applications and to study the life cycle of trees.

down during construction as part of a “Tree of Life” lab. Students counted the tree stump’s growth rings to estimate the age of the tree - more than 50 years - and then compared it to the tree they were studying in the lab. “This was a great experience, and I’m so thankful that Warfel and the Penn Manor administration were so open to sharing these experiences with our students,” Slates said. The interactions were designed to help demystify the construction field, said Warfel project engineer Kevin McGuire. “We want to involve the students and then turn that into a discussion about what they plan to do in the future. What’s going on outside the window, and how could that involve you?” he said. “We need more conversations like that in the education field.” McGuire said he hopes to continue the collaboration as the construction project progresses over the next two years.

Math students learned how construction workers and surveyors use trigonometry and algebra in the field. Agricultural mechanics students learned about the inner workings of a temporary ag shop as it was being built, and plant science students got to examine the rings of a tree cut down as part of the project. Warfel Construction also established an internship that enabled one student to attend weekly construction meetings and visit on-site work, and groups of students were able to tour the construction site and learn about the excavating, plumbing, drywall, technology, and other trades represented by the workers they observed. “When there’s a construction site in your back yard, you take advantage of the valuable career exploration for your students,” said Michelle Wagner, support and transition teacher at the school. “This fits into our goal of transition and preparing students for life after high school.” Staff members from Warfel and Boro Construction, the electrical contractor on the project, visited three of math teacher Gary Luft’s classes in April and May to talk about their roles in the project. “The students were given an overview and the phasing of the total construction project, as well as an explanation of what was currently being done on site,” Luft said. “It was very beneficial for the students to hear from the experts in the field.” Meagan Slates’ plant science class got to examine the remains of a giant tree cut

Two Scouts from Troop 25 in East York have earned their Eagle Scout Award, the highest award in Scouts BSA. Jadon Nardo and Christian Thole both received their awards from Troop 25 Scoutmaster Perry Bevivino during Troop 25’s Court of Honor held on May 28. They also received Certificates of Special Congressional Recognition from Rep. Scott Perry and American flags that had flown over the United States Capitol in recognition of their achievements. Both Scouts thanked their parents, their Scoutmaster, fellow Scouts, friends and family members for their help in completing their projects and their Eagle requirements. For his Eagle Scout service project, Jadon, son of Joseph Nardo and Alissa Miller, renovated four damaged horseshoe pits at both Lake Redman and Rocky Ridge County Park by leading fellow Scouts and adults in tearing down and removing the old pits and building and installing the new ones. Starting out as a Wolf Cub, Jadon has been a Scout for 10 years and has earned 41 merit badges. Jadon is also a member of Scouts BSA’s Order of the Arrow, and he has received the World Conservation Award. Jadon is a 2019 graduate of Central York High School and will attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall to study emergency medicine. Jadon will continue to volunteer as a firefighter and plans to earn his EMT certification this summer. For his Eagle Scout service project, Christian, son of Tom and Lori Thole, rebuilt and repaired parts of the horse riding jumps at Spring Valley County Park near Glen Rock by leading fellow Scouts and adults in tearing down and removing old jumps, rebuilding and repairing some damaged jumps, performing safety checks of all 22 jumps, and designing, constructing and installing 16 permanent sign posts along the trails that will guide riders during events at the park. Starting out as a Tiger Cub, Christian has been a Scout for 11 years and has earned 25 merit badges. Christian is a 2019 graduate of York Catholic High School and plans to pursue a computer engineering degree at the University of Cincinnati.

Julian co-founded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in 2018 in an effort to teach more students about growing their own food and to partner with schools to create and sustain learning gardens and customized programs. Camp mornings kicked off with “Garden Yoga” as campers practiced stretching into poses, followed by plenty of time in the garden exploring and tending the plants. Each day featured a garden-related topic with a readaloud story and activities, games, and crafts. “ We were talking about pests and beneficials,” said Jameer, one of the campers. “And we talked about how you

Some of the other summer offerings by The Edible Classroom included garden camps and enrichment programs at Park Elementary School in Columbia Borough School District, Brecht Elementary School in Manheim Township School District, Conestoga Elementary School in Penn Manor School District, Manor Township Playground in the Parks, Teen Central in Manheim, Wee Care Day School in East Petersburg, and Power Scholars Academy offered through SDoL and the Lancaster Family YMCA. Julian noted that in the fall and spring The Edible Classroom helps schools throughout the county with planning curriculum-based garden lessons: “All of which teach them how to plant, tend, harvest, and enjoy the fruits of their labor,” she explained. On Saturday, Sept. 21, The Edible Classroom will host its second annual Watermelon Blaster 5K and Kids’ Fun Run for the community at 8:30 a.m. at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. All participants will receive a watermelon blaster: a favorite smoothie recipe of The Edible Classroom’s founders that combines fresh and frozen watermelon with a splash of lime. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in three age categories. To register in advance, readers may visit www.the edibleclassroom.org/5k-registration. Those who register by Friday, Sept. 6, will receive a discounted rate and a T-shirt. Packet pickup will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Manor Middle School. Eventday registration and packet pickup will open at 7 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Run, free and open to children age 12 and younger, will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. Other festivities on race day will include live music by Dreadnought Brigade and a watermelon seed spitting contest for children and adults, where the winners will receive watermelons. A portion of every Watermelon Blaster registration fee will go into a School Garden Grant fund. Grants will be awarded to three schools to use toward The Edible Classroom’s programming to establish or sustain a school garden in the 2019-20 academic year. To learn more about how to get involved, readers may search for “The Edible Classroom” on Facebook or visit www.the edibleclassroom.org. Volunteers are welcome to serve in various capacities.

Fishing Event from pg 1 Heroes on the Water (HOW) and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) will host the fifth annual Veterans on the Susquehanna event at Shank’s Mare Outfitters, 2092 Long Level Road, Wrightsville, on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 1 p.m. Veterans and those who would like to honor them are invited to attend. The day of kayaking and fly-fishing will be free of charge. A dinner reception with live music will follow at 5:30 p.m., and there will be a nominal entrance fee for the reception. HOW provides kayaks, fishing equipment, and snacks free of charge for veterans and first responder outings. Veterans from all branches of the military gather for fishing and time away from everyday stresses. Attendees may fish or just socialize. Adam Gagne is the volunteer coordinator for the local HOW chapter, which is known as the only HOW chapter in Pennsylvania. Gagne is a retired Navy senior chief petty officer and was executive chef

for the Navy at the Pentagon. He was stationed on submarines for more than eight years. His connection to waterways extends beyond his passion for kayak fishing. As a civil engineering technician with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, he designs and works on restoration projects with the goal of reducing water pollution. To register for the upcoming Veterans on the Susquehanna event, readers may visit www.cbf.org/veterans.

Golden Knights from pg 1 The marching band includes sevenththrough 12th-graders, which the students said is a great way to make friends in other grade levels and get advice for classes and other school-related topics. “Everyone is friendly this year,” Jake said. Each section tends to establish a unique bond at camp as well, creating smaller families within the larger family-like structure of the marching band. “Percussion is always known to be the best on spirit days - always,” said Jake. Some of this summer’s spirit days included Dress Like a Staff Member, Wacky Tacky Wednesday, Crazy Hair and Hat Day, Pajama Day, and Beach Day. A tradition that Jake said is unique to the percussion section is having pizza ordered in for lunch for their section during one day of camp. Regarding camp, Eastern York Marching Band director Keith Gromis said, “It’s just a lot of fun. You don’t do it if you don’t love it.” Gromis is now in his fifth year as director and seventh year teaching music

UPMC Memorial Will Move To New Building UPMC Pinnacle has shared its plan for moving its UPMC Memorial operations from its current 325 S. Belmont St., York, location to its new facility in west York. Under that plan, the facility on Belmont Street will close, and the new UPMC Memorial will open on Sunday, Aug. 18, at 6 a.m. at 1701 Innovation Drive, York. UPMC Pinnacle shared some key upcoming dates with the public. The Belmont Street facility was scheduled to stop direct admissions from physicians on Aug. 11. Any currently scheduled surgeries or procedures will proceed as planned. On Thursday, Aug. 15, emergency medical services (EMS) and ambulance services will stop bringing emergency patients to the hospital on Belmont Street.

Patients will be taken to other area hospitals until the new UPMC Memorial Emergency Room (ER) opens. Walk-in emergency services will continue to be available at the Belmont Street ER until Aug. 18. On Aug. 18 at 6 a.m., the Belmont Street facility will no longer accept new walk-in ER patients. Also, any remaining inpatients at the Belmont Street facility will begin being transferred to the new UPMC Memorial. When the new UPMC Memorial opens on Aug. 18 at 6 a.m., it will also begin accepting emergency department patients and admitting new patients. Elective services will start at the new hospital on Monday, Aug. 19. Over recent weeks, UPMC Pinnacle has discussed the move with EMS providers and area

emergency departments to help ensure a seamless transition. The new UPMC Memorial hospital is a five-level, 102-bed facility with private patient rooms. The 220,000-square-foot facility will provide acute and emergency medical care, maternity services, cardiology and vascular services, chronic disease management, and surgical services. A 120,000-square-foot, fivelevel UPMC Outpatient Center will open next to the hospital building on Monday, Sept. 9. It will offer ambulatory surgery, outpatient imaging, a sleep lab, a cancer center, offices for specialty care providers, community meeting rooms, and more. Area residents can find out more about the transition at www.UPMCPinnacle.com/The Future or via UPMC Pinnacle’s social media sites.

Giant Pilots Enhanced Rewards Program

General DRIVER NEEDED FOR furniture store in MD on Thursdays. Needs to have the ability to lift furniture & pull a trailer. Call 717-839-1312 for more info.

Giant Food Stores has announced it is piloting a new way for its customers to increase their savings through personalized offers on products they already buy with the new Choice Rewards program. An enhancement to its current Gas Extra Rewards program, Choice Rewards brings customized savings and rewards to customers via the Giant or Martin’s app. By leveraging smartphone technology, Giant aims to provide relevant rewards to their participating customers. Choice Rewards is now available in a select pilot market, and it will roll out by the end of the year. Just like they do in Giant’s current program, customers participating in the pilot earn points on qualifying purchases at the rate of one point for every $1 spent. New through Choice Rewards, they will also be able to earn points through targeted “bonus earn” offers. When it comes time to redeem points, customers can either redeem their points for discounts on gas - with 100 points equaling a $0.10 discount per gallon up to 25 gallons - or choose among new offers such as converting points to dollars to save directly on groceries. In addition to viewing their personalized offers and rewards earnings on the app, customers can load digital coupons, activate Deli Order Ahead, or place a grocery order with Giant Direct. In the app, customers can track their earning progress while managing their points and rewards. Points earned expire on the last day of the month following the month in which they were earned. For more information about Giant or Martin’s, readers may visit the https://giantfood stores.com or https://martinsfoods.com.
