A champion for the community Chili for Charity Cook-Off will benefit food bank

RonRobbins is passionate about providing opportunities for recreation in York. The board chair of the Eastern York Recreation Authority (EYRA) was recently recognized for his efforts when he won the Community Champion Award from the Pennsylvania Recreation & Park Society, a statewide organization that facilitates parks and recreation programs throughout Pennsylvania.

“I was shocked, surprised and grateful when I found out I won,” Robbins said, “but that’s not what keeps me going. I don’t do it for recognition. I do it for the kids, my own children and everybody else’s children.I want them to have a place for recreation in our community.”

Robbins, who, with his wife, Michelle, has six children who range in age from 10 to 27, has been volunteering with community recreation programs for almost 30 years. He used to volunteer with Hellam Recreation, and when he ended up being the only active volunteer left, he looked into forming EYRA to keep recreation opportunities alive in Eastern York.

Robbins used a state-driven grant to hire a parks and recreation director, Jessica Cirilo, who helps maintain consistency in an organization run by volunteers. “Most people move on from volunteering after their children leave the program,” Robbins said. “I wanted someone who, even if I stepped out of the program, would still be there to see these programs continue. That was my biggest goal.”

EYRA offers a variety of recreational programs for youths in the region, including baseball, softball and soccer programs, with youth

winners. Additionally, each competitor will have the chance to be chosen by one of the event’s Gold Sponsors to receive a judge’s choice plaque.

The event is an opportunity to sample tasty chili, while raising funds for community projects, said Rebecca Wright, representing Columbia’s Movers and Shakers Society. “Proceeds from this charitable event will go directly to the Columbia Food Bank to provide some extra relief during their most needed time of year,” she explained.

Along with sampling chili, people will have the opportunity to enjoy live music and time for socializing at the event, Wright remarked. “This family-friendly event is full of tasteful food as well as tasteful live music,” she said. “Attendees can expect a variety of chili dishes that will have them begging for the recipe.”

Last year’s inaugural Chili for Charity Cook-Off raised

$500 for the Columbia Food Bank, and organizers hope to exceed that number this year.

Columbia’s Movers and Shakers Society formed to promote events and activities in the town. “The mission of Columbia’s Movers and Shakers Society is to support organizations and our community through events and outreach programs,” Wright commented. “We are a group of committed like-minded individuals who all have a passion for helping others through events in our community.”

Entries for the chili cookoff will be accepted until space runs out, Wright said. To enter the contest or to purchase tickets to attend, search for “The 2023 Chili for Charity Cook-Off” on Facebook. Tickets will be available at the door, but there is a discount for purchasing tickets in advance.

New bishop to visit local churches

Bishop Timothy Senior has been celebrating Masses with parishioners throughout the diocese this summer as he begins his ministry as 12th bishop of Harrisburg. Senior was named to this position by Pope Francis on April 25, and he was installed on June 21 at Saint Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg.

During his pastoral visits, he will meet with all the priests of the diocese prior to the public Mass. The Masses will begin at 7 p.m. All parishioners are welcome to attend.

Senior will visit the North Lancaster Deanery on Thursday, Aug. 24, at Holy Trinity Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, and he will visit the South Lancaster Deanery on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Saint Leo the Great Church,

2427 Marietta Ave., Lancaster.

The Aug. 29 Mass will also be livestreamed; visit www .hbgdiocese.org for the link.

Prior to being named the bishop of Harrisburg, Senior was an auxiliary bishop of Philadelphia, serving as the regional bishop of Montgomery County and Philadelphia-South, as well as chancellor of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary. While with the archdiocese, Senior served as rector of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, moderator of the Curia of the Archdiocese, vicar for clergy and deputy secretary and secretary for the Secretariat for Catholic Human Services in the archdiocese.

basketball coming this fall. Most programs are open to youths ages 4 to 18.

Along with hiring Cirilo, Robbins set his sights on acquiring funds to improve EYRA facilities. A new playground was recently built at the Barshinger Complex on Accomac Road in Hellam.

Over the years, Robbins has filled a variety of roles in EYRA. “From coaching to lining fields, securing donations to handling disagreements and emptying trash cans to overseeing the funnel cake stand, Ron (works hard),” said Cirilo. “When he is not at his full-time job or on his boat - the only time he turns off his phone - there is no doubt you can find him getting his hands dirty somewhere in the community, striving to make it just a little bit better.”

At the awards ceremony earlier this year in Hershey, Robbins thought EYRA was receiving an award as an organization, unaware that Cirilo had actually nominated him individually.

“I had no clue,” he recalled. “I saw my name come up on a screen in front of all these people I don’t know, and it was a total surprise.”

He emphasized that although he was honored to win, he’s not driven by accolades.

“I really just want to provide opportunities to kids,” he said. “That’s so important to me. We’ve accomplished a lot, and I think we have a great plan in place going forward to accomplish even more.”

Railroad Museum events will highlight model train displays

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will hold its Model Railroading Days event from Friday, Aug. 18, through Sunday, Aug. 20. Admission for the event will be included in the museum’s regular admission, and attendees will be able to explore a variety of displays from multiple model train organizations.

A Middle Division layout, which is based on the Pennsylvania Railroad in the Harrisburg area, will be set up in the second-floor gallery. The Pennsylvania Landscapes layout will be displayed in Stewart Junction. Both layouts have been crafted by the museum’s volunteers. On Saturday, Aug. 19, a tree-making demonstration for model train displays will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and it will be included in the museum’s standard admission cost.

On Sunday, Oct. 1, the Railroad Museum will hold its 16th annual Garden Railways Tour from 1 to 5 p.m. The self-guided tour will include five stops across Wrightsville, Lancaster, Lititz and Manheim, and each stop will feature a model train display that

is incorporated into a yard or garden. After purchasing a ticket, participants will receive the list of stops on the route, and they may choose which locations to visit for their tour. Tickets may be purchased by visiting the museum’s store during its regular hours or by visiting https://tinyurl.com/garden railwaystour. Children age 5 and under will be admitted at no cost.

The Railroad Museum first introduced the annual Garden Railways Tour after learning about the practice from museum volunteer John Bowman. Bowman is heavily

involved in the garden railway community and continues to connect the museum with model train enthusiasts who have garden displays throughout York and Lancaster counties.

“I think the appeal is the scale; garden railways are the largest model train displays,” said Elizabeth Myers, program coordinator at the Railroad Museum. “Many people associate model train displays with basements and small rooms, but this combines the hobby with nature and being outside.”

Not only are garden railways located outdoors, but

they also often integrate a mix of elements that can be found in nature, such as branches, flowers and stones. When setting up the displays, garden railway enthusiasts often place pieces made of plastic and metal alongside the natural elements to create a realistic model of real scenic train routes. The outdoor setting also allows the displays’ creators to utilize landscaping to customize their constructions. “It’s a really fun way to get outside in the early fall and enjoy a family-friendly activity,” Myers said. Wish you were here

We are not hoarders; we are sentimental creatures. We are not collectors; we are protectors of memories.

For many, postcards hold great value. They can be seen as monetized sentimentality.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will conduct its annual expo and show at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Admission to the event is free.

“People collect multiple things for all different reasons,” said Gordon Smith, a member of the Lancaster County Postcard Club who’s organizing the expo. “It depends on what draws their interest. Some people collect postcards for the post marks from different post offices. Some people collect them for the stamps. The show is an opportunity for people to get together and talk about postcards and explore postcards.”

Postcards will be displayed on 45 tables - about 10 more than in 2022 - by 20 vendors or dealers, some from as far away as Maryland, New York, Delaware, Ohio, New Jersey,

Virginia and Washington, D.C. More than 100,000 postcards depicting scenes, vacation spots and roadside places like diners, hotels and motels, as well as some celebrating holidays and special occasions, will be made available for purchase.

“I’ve never seen so many postcards in one place,” said Smith, a 53-year-old resident of Wrightsville. “Some people have their favorite dealers. Everyone comes looking for different stuff. Most of them are there to buy, but there are also people from

Wagman recognized with Contractor Safety Award

the community coming to sell their families’ collections. But there are also people who are curious; they’re just taking it all in.”

Nearly 250 postcard collectors and aficionados are expected to attend the Lancaster County Postcard Expo. The expo is one of a handful of postcard shows conducted in Lancaster County at different times each year.

“(A postcard is) a card that the postal service will mail without an envelope,” said Smith. “It used to be a way of communicating at the turn of

the (20th) century. At that time, the mail went out three or four times a day. They didn’t have telephones. It was a short message and a way to keep in touch. It was just random conversation that you and I now have in person or over the phone.”

Smith said he possesses postcards that were postmarked as far back as the 1870s.

“Some people make their own postcards,” said Smith. “I personally like the real photo postcards. It’s a picture of what happened there and then. It gives you a glimpse of what life was like at that specific moment.”

The Lancaster County Postcard Club recently celebrated the 33rd anniversary of its founding. A few years after its founding, the club sponsored its inaugural Lancaster County Postcard Expo.

“Postcards are still being made,” said Smith. “You can find them at tourist areas. But they’re not being used as much as they used to be, probably because people now use phones or the internet.”

Covered Bridge Classic celebrates the joy of riding

The Lancaster Bicycle Club exists to promote the sport of bicycling, advocate for the safety of riders and provide members with cycling opportunities. Few events exemplify that mission better than the Covered Bridge Classic.

On Sunday, Aug. 20, the 400-member Lancaster Bicycle Club will stage the 44th edition of its annual Covered Bridge Classic at seven start/finish points across northern Lancaster County. Some 1,300 bicycling enthusiasts from points all along the East Coast will descend upon the county to celebrate the fellowship inspired by cycling.

The event is being presented as a ride, not a competition.

“The purpose is to draw in cyclists,” said Leslie Arnold, communications director for the Lancaster Bicycle Club. “It’s to offer a huge cycling event to the community. It’s an eclectic mix. Some are very serious cyclists. Some people do it because they are challenged by friends. Some make it part of their vacations. People want to see the covered bridges. That’s what draws people.”

From the seven start/finish

points, participants are treated to rides of various length - 35, 50, 65 or 100 miles - through the Lancaster County countryside in the areas of Warwick Township, Ephrata, Manheim, Stevens and Hempfield. The 100-mile trek incorporates 14 of Lancaster County’s covered bridges into its journey.

All of the routes include rest stops, some of which feature mechanical support, parking and refreshments.

“Lancaster is not flat,” said Arnold. “There aren’t steep, steep climbs, but we have climbs that are going to push you. The shortest course has the least amount of climbs, and the longest course has the most amount of climbs.”

The Covered Bridge Classic also serves as a fundraiser. From its participation, the Lancaster Bicycle Club is hoping to raise more than $10,000, some of which will be put back into the club, some of which will be funneled into community causes related to bicycling and some of which will go toward the maintenance of the covered bridges.

Since 1999, the Lancaster Bicycle Club has awarded $545,000 in grants mainly funded through the Covered Bridge Classic.

Cyclists are treated to a variety of Lancaster County terrain during the Covered Bridge Classic.

The Covered Bridge Classic promotes fellowship through cycling.

“It’s a huge way to give back to the community,” said Arnold. “The Lancaster Bike Club is all about advocating for cycling safety. We have social events throughout the year. We have different things for everybody, different types of rides for all levels of riders. Throughout the year, there’s always an effort to schedule a ride every weekend.”

In addition to its relaxed rides, the Lancaster Bicycle Club also organizes two other more formal rides - the Three Creek Century and the Chocolate Tour.

The Lancaster Bicycle Club was formed in 1973, and six years later it presented its inaugural Covered Bridge Classic.

“Over the years, we’ve evolved,” said Arnold. “More people came in, and we became bigger and more complex. At one point, we had 600 members. It’s a pastime you can do, and there’s also more serious riders. The club has evolved to reflect the needs of the membership.”
