Grace Baptist To Hold BloodDrive
Educators from three local school districts and several other organizations participated in environmental literacy events that they can implement in the classroom.
The Outdoor Learning Network Initiative (OLNI) completed its first grant cycle in July. OLNI, founded in the fall of 2019, is a collaborative partnership between the school districts of Conestoga Valley, Ephrata Area, and Columbia Borough in addition to the Lancaster County Conservation District, Stroud Water Research Center, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and Millersville University. Educators from each entity participated in environmental literacy events that can be implemented in classrooms at every level.
This summer, the group met for two weeks - one week in June and one week in July. Teachers from each of the three school districts participated in a wide range of environmental literacy learning events and projects that are scalable from the elementary classrooms to high school classes. From determining the health of a stream via chemical water testing to an accounting of macroinvertebrates - bugs in the water - to computer tools that delineate watersheds and even augmented reality stream tables, educators had a wide range of educational options from which to choose during the sessions.
Teachers were also given time to work collaboratively to develop systemic environmental literacy learning to enhance what is already accomplished in the schools.
The grant was funded by the Pisces Foundation, Chesapeake Bay Trust, Chesapeake Bay Office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Chesapeake Bay Funders Network.

On the wall of Donegal Presbyterian Church, a sign bears a Celtic saying. It translates to “one hundred thousand welcomes,” and it perfectly sums up the church’s philosophy, said Portia Brian, who volunteers as the church’s historian. “We believe in connecting people through faith,” she said. “Churches come and go, but this one has withstood the test of time.”
She’s not kidding. Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, will mark its 300th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 26, with a homecoming service beginning at 10 a.m. Bagpiper Gustav Person will lead a processional of church dignitaries, and the service will include recorded greetings from the Rev. Stephen Richmond of the Rathneeny, Ireland, church with whom Donegal shares an ancestral heritage. Representatives from the synod and presbytery will participate in the service, and the Rev. Matthew D. Randolph will deliver the sermon. The Rev. Larry Chottiner has written a hymn especially for the 300-year celebration. The Donegal Church choir will provide special music. Communion will be celebrated at the church’s early 18th-century Communion table, and the elements will be served from the church’s antique pewter Communion set. Tea and scones will be served in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. A luncheon will be held at Cameron Estate Inn beginning at 1 p.m.
Brian said the congregation uses 1721 as the date of the church’s formation, because there is documented proof of that date. “We use that date, but we know that there were people worshipping here before that time,” she noted.
The church grounds were once home to a “witness tree,” where church members met in 1777, when George Washington sent a message asking for men to muster and travel to Philadelphia for the Revolutionary War effort. In 1991, the tree had to be cut down due to disease, but the congregation used its wood to make offering plates, bowls, bells and more. Acorns from the original tree were also saved to plant a new tree.
Brian said the 300th anniversary celebration offers a time for the community to come together and recognize the longevity of the church.
“We are welcoming anybody back who has a connection to Donegal Presbyterian Church,” she said, noting that the church has withstood the challenges of life on what was once frontier land through wars and even the most recent pandemic. “It’s amazing that a congregation has survived for 300 years, and it has evolved over those years. The church had to be a vital part of the community to survive that long, and we are still committed to serving our community today.”
Reservations are requested for the church service and may be made by calling the church office between Monday, Sept. 6, and Monday, Sept. 20, at 717-653-1943. Reservations for the luncheon are required by Sunday, Sept. 12. To sign up, email CarlaDouple98@gmail.com or purchase tickets on Sundays after church services.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our country. Between the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on that tragic day. Among them were 343 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters.
In 1992, Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), which has developed and expanded programs to honor fallen fire heroes and assist their families and co-workers. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way for firefighters and the community to honor and remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who died at the World Trade Center. The first stair climb was held on Sept. 11, 2005, when five Colorado firefighters convened at a high-rise building in downtown Denver to climb the equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each subsequent year, attendance grew, and in 2010, the original Denver team partnered with the NFFF to create a template that would enable coordinators to host 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs anywhere in the United States.
Eleven years ago, Scott Yuill, a volunteer firefighter at the East Petersburg Fire Company, was surfing the internet and discovered the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Yuill decided to organize a stair climb in Lancaster because he knew someone who had lost his life during the terrorist attacks. The Lancaster 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb has always been held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster.
The Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Firefighters will have the option of wearing turnout gear and carrying equipment. All participants will receive a photo badge of one of the fallen firefighters as well as a T-shirt, which is included in registration. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. Although encouraged, preregistration is not required because there will be sameday registration. To preregister, visit https://lancaster stairclimb.org/registration. Spectators are welcome.
The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs fund programs provided by the NFFF to support the families of fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit.
For more information, visit https://lancasterstairclimb.org or email syuill@lancaster stairclimb.org. To learn more about the NFFF, visit www.firehero.org.

“When this happened to Linda, it really hit home … being parents and realizing the danger our teenagers are in,” said Jennifer King. She and her husband, Wayne, both members of the Pennsylvania Riding Club, are working with American Bikers on a Mission to organize the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride. Stoltzfoos was kidnapped and murdered in 2020.
Wayne, who was born into the Plain community, is friends with Sam Blank, a spokesman for the Stoltzfoos family. “I wanted to make sure this was done right,” said Wayne. “A focus of our club is bridging the gap between the biker community and the (Plain) community.” With that goal in mind, Wayne and other members of the club plan to hold the ride on Saturday, Sept. 11. Riders will meet at Ephrata Community Church (ECC), 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, from 10 to 11:45 a.m. for registration. The ride will leave at noon and follow a route that will take Route 322 east to Farmersville Road to Shirk Road to Route 23 through New Holland to Route 897. The ride will end at Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl. A short ceremony including the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, announcements, and a safety briefing will be held at ECC.
At Weaverland, Andrea McHenry, a representative of FREE, a Berks County-based anti-human trafficking organization active in Reading, will speak briefly. McHenry said she plans to share statistics about human trafficking. “We do education on how to take action against human trafficking and how to identify and respond to victims,” explained McHenry. “We do prevention work with children in an effort to keep them safe.” FREE opened The Resting Place, a women’s drop-in center meeting basic needs and providing safe housing for those who request it, in Reading in 2019. The organization is in the process of opening a refuge home in the Reading area.
With the ride being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Wayne noted that riders from Never Forget 9/11 will leave Manheim and join the ride when it leaves ECC. In addition, the Green Castle American Legion Riders Color Guard will be present. There is no charge to take part, but Jennifer requested that those who plan to participate search for “Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride” on Facebook and indicate their intent to attend. A similar ride last year attracted more than 700 riders. “There were probably 3,000 people (gathered at ECC before we left),” noted Wayne.
Organizers anticipate having coffee and possibly doughnuts at ECC prior to the ride. They are hoping to provide volunteer traffic control and to have members of the Birdin-Hand Fire Company that organized early searches for Stoltzfoos present. Opportunities to donate to those organizations will be presented. Following the ride, chicken meals and ice cream will be available for purchase at Weaverland.
Organizing the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride are (from left) Jason L’Heureux, Andrea McHenry, Wayne and Jennifer King, Elizabeth and Brent Bair, and Mike Kulkusky.
