Options For Hiking In Green Outdoor exercise is encouraged during COVID-19 restrictions as a way to stay healthy and positive and maybe even increase defenses against disease. Benefits of exercise may include lower cholesterol and blood pressure, while improving strength, balance, and coordination. Social distancing is usually easier when exercising outside, as well. Kristen Holloway, founder of the Facebook page Day Hikes of Lancaster County PA, has always been a hiker. During the pandemic, she has been trying to hike at least weekly alone and with family members. “When I lived in San Diego, I found this book of day hikes of San Diego County,” said Holloway, who set herself a goal of visiting all the trails in the book while she lived there. After returning to her native Lancaster County, Holloway decided a Facebook page could offer other avid hikers the same kind of information

she had found in the book - trails that offer beautiful scenery along with varying degrees of difficulty. “I knew there were all these great hikes, but I knew there were some I didn’t know about,” said Holloway. “I was looking for one place that had all the good hikes, so I wanted to put something together so that people would know what’s out there.” Trails that are good for a variety of activities include the Enola Low Grade Trail, which can be accessed from a number of points in the county the Turkey Hill Trail Head in Manor Township, Sigman Road in Pequea Township, and Fairview Road in Strasburg Township. The trail has a crushed stone surface and is a favorite of walkers. The White Cliffs of Conoy in Marietta are located along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, which can be accessed from Columbia, Marietta, or Bainbridge. Holloway said it is a paved trail often used for running and biking in addition to hiking. The trail, which runs along the Susquehanna River, features some See Hiking pg 4

teenagers say they feel sad or depressed most days. Almost 16% have seriously considered attempting suicide, and more than 9% of students have attempted suicide. Gretchen Gaudioso, client and family advocate with Mental Health America Lancaster County (MHALC), has been visiting schools for some time, working to educate students about mental health issues. TeenHope addresses mental health issues by offering screening programs for depression, anxiety, and suicide risk to area middle and high school students. Since the beginning of the fall 2019 semester, MHALC and TeenHope have been working together to provide students with education regarding anxiety, depression, and suicide prior to the screenings. “When I learned of (MHALC’s) existing program, it seemed to be a perfect fit,” said Kim Moore, See TeenHope pg 2

A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgive hope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who added that the fair is the perfect vehicle to find a meaningful gift,

especially for those who do not need anything in particular. Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful gifts. “I think through this (pandemic) people may have realized that stuff really isn’t important, other than basic necessities,” she said. “(Instead of) all the stuff we might have thought was necessary, we can refocus on what’s important.” See Gifts That Give Hope pg 4

Annette Roland of Music for Everyone (left) and Grace Julian of The Edible Classroom manned their tables at the 2019 Gifts That Give Hope Fair. The 2020 fair will be held as a virtual event on Dec. 5.

McDevitt. “Mental health disorders can affect school performance, harm relationships, and lead to suicide, (so) we have increased our efforts in educating students on the importance of mental wellness, how to identify what a mental health challenge is, and how they can receive support for themselves and others.” When Gaudioso speaks to students, she tries to allay anxiety and fear about participating in a mental health screening. “(I tell them this is) just like getting your height, weight, and vision checked (at school),” she said. “You get your mental health checked.” Gaudioso explained that the screenings are done by licensed professionals, and students are referred to other mental health specialists depending on the test results. Following a presentation, the students will be surveyed to gauge the impact of the information they have received. “We feel it’s important for students to have as much information as possible so they know it’s normal to struggle in these areas … and there is help available for everyone,” said Moore. director of TeenHope. That realization led to a pilot program at a couple of Lancaster County high schools, where Gaudioso has spoken to students who were participating in screenings. Gaudioso educates teenagers about mental health treatments, which include therapy, medication if needed, having supportive people around, and educating oneself about symptoms. She also talks about the steps involved in getting help and the different types of therapists available, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, or licensed social workers, and she talks about what students can expect during the screening. Part of Gaudioso’s presentation is to encourage students to be honest during the screening. “I tell them they need to be honest and true to themselves because it will only help them,” she said, adding that she goes over the signs of depression and anxiety in detail with students and asks them to take a serious look at their own behavior. She asks them to look at things they once participated in that they are no longer doing, such as communicating with friends, completing schoolwork, playing a sport, or spending time with family. Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC, noted that the organization is trying to be proactive in facing the increased rate of anxiety and depression in teenagers. “ We are working diligently to remove the barriers that prevent one from getting the help they need,” said

Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, 100 Museum Road, Stevens, where she has spent up to three hours hiking. Because Holloway lives in Penn Manor School District, many of the trails she has discussed on the page are in that area. For a good workout, she heads to Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve, reporting that that the trail is a loop of nearly 4 miles with hilly terrain. Kelly’s Run can be found at 199 Street Road, T397, Holtwood. Holloway said that hiking has been a family tradition. “My parents took us hiking a lot as kids,” she shared. “It’s fun, but it’s a good way to get exercise.” When Holloway hikes with her children, she likes to visit the Lancaster Conservancy Trout Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea (Holtwood). “Trout Run is great for those who like to play in the water,” she said. For green and shady hikes, Holloway recommends Lancaster Conservancy’s Climbers Run Nature Preserve, located off Frogtown Road, Pequea. Other scenic trails on Holloway’s list include Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve, 857 Green Hill Road South, Conestoga, in Martic Township and House Rock Nature Preserve, 370 House Rock Road, Pequea. Holloway appreciates the beauty of the outdoors during solitary ventures. “I like to hike by myself,” she said. “It’s meditative, so it’s time to be in my thoughts and be in nature. You take more in when you’re by yourself.” The Facebook page Holloway founded allows her to combine her interests in hiking and photography. “I have a list of 25 more hikes to investigate that aren’t on the page (yet),” she noted. For those who are averse to the summer heat and crowded trails, she recommends hiking in the early mornings before the sun is high and the parking lots fill up.

GOTR Season Announced Girls on the Run (GOTR) is accepting registrations for the upcoming GOTR and Heart and Sole season, which will begin on Monday, Sept. 21. At GOTR, social-emotional learning is the cornerstone of the award-winning, research-based lessons for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR supports girls in identifying and processing their emotions. The GOTR programming seeks to empower girls to nurture their physical and emotional health, find strength in their connectedness, and build confidence and resiliency. Following current COVID-19 guidelines, GOTR-trained coaches and dedicated staff are ready to adapt program delivery as the school year approaches. GOTR has made several modifications to the program to ensure the health and safety of coaches and participants. In the event of unexpected or planned closures, GOTR will shift in-person programming to virtual practices. Coaches will be provided with specific resources, training, and support to prepare them to seamlessly deliver the program virtually. The virtual program will engage and connect socially and emotionally and will provide physical activity as well. As guidelines allow, GOTR will also plan to meet safely in small groups as it connects at alternate sites such as parks, community centers, churches, and schools. Additional modifications that have been made to the GOTR and

Gifts That Give Hope from pg 1 COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions also encouraged the changes in how the fair will be held this year. “We decided to keep it virtual,” said Knepper, who added that the organization will be spotlighting 30 nonprofit organizations that have taken part in the fair previously. “The sponsors that would normally have been our supporters are going through a tough time, so we are trying to have minimal overhead costs,” she explained. She added that, as in the past, there will be variety in the organizations that are featured and that both local and global nonprofits will be included. Local organizations that will be featured in the 2020 GTGH are Milagro House, SWAN, Music for Everyone, Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coalition, Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, The Common Wheel, and Power Packs Project. Other area nonprofits that will be highlighted are Lifecycles, The Edible Classroom, Mom’s House, Aarons Acres, Faith Friendship Community of Mountville, the Lancaster Junior League, Nurse Family Partnership, North Star Initiative, Clare House Lancaster, Church World Service Lancaster, and Advoz. Organizations with furtherreaching missions are Feed My Starving Children, World Bicycle Relief, Connection Ubuntu, Habitat for Humanity, Rafiki Africa Foundation, Brittany’s Hope, HOPE International, Heifer Project,Vickie’s Angel Foundation, Outreach Paraguay, Siloam Ethiopia, and Meals on Wheels.

Heart and Sole program delivery include reduced team size for safer gathering; reduced duration from 10 weeks to eight weeks to accommodate a later start date; flexibility in times and days of practices; a flexible season start date; and modifications to adhere to social distance guidelines and minimize exposure. Each girl will receive her

own bag to hold her individual materials for the season. GOTR coaches will receive updated training and additional modules that include social inclusion, COVID-19 safety, and trauma informed coaching. The season culminating 5K will take place midNovember through smaller sitebased events and virtually. For more information and to register, readers may visit www.gotrlancaster.org.

abandoned buildings and the cliffs, actually remnants of a limestone quarry. “It’s a pretty overlook with the white cliffs, and you’re walking along the railroad tracks, which is kind of cool,” said Holloway. For short hikes,

Holloway recommends Ray’s Woods, 44 Laurel Drive, Holtwood, and the Farmingdale Trail in Noel Dorwart Memorial Park, 408 Parklawn Court, Lancaster. For more moderately challenging hikes, Holloway recommends the loop at Steinman Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea, and combining trails at

FORMER KNEE PAIN SUFFERER SHARES: “I was looking at surgery…But now there’s no need.” New Knee Pain Workshop Helps Local People Get Back to Normal Naturally, Without Unnecessary Pain Pills, Injections, or Surgeries. • • • • • •

Are you careful how you move because you’re afraid your knee might “give out”? Do you find yourself taking Tylenol, Aleve or Advil just to get through the day? Are you missing out on family time because of knee pain? Have you changed the way you do everyday activities - like going up and down stairs or getting in and out of a car? Do you try to just “keep going” but you feel limited in what you can do? Do you feel worn out and held back because of your knee?

If you answered “YES” to any of the above questions, the Knee Pain Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “When I first started my PT at Madden, I had trouble with just about everything. My knees hurt and sometimes fell out from under me. Since my PT, I have been able to clean with a bit of pain but nothing like it had been and I am able to do things with my grandkids again! When I went on vacation, I put so many steps on my legs and didn’t mind at all!” -Sharon M. Knee pain can completely destroy your life…we’ve seen it many times. It can make you avoid the things you once loved doing such as taking walks with the dog, spending time outdoors with the family, or even doing simple household chores. I’ve seen many folks afraid to do everyday things like going up and down the stairs or getting out of the car because they don’t know if their knee is going to “give out” and make them fall. Knee pain can: • Make you feel like you’re not your normal self… • It can zap and take away your energy… • It can make you feel depressed as you see other people doing the things you wish you could be doing… It can be a downward spiral. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy we’ve helped literally hundreds of knee pain sufferers cancel their surgery, get off of pain meds and anti-inflammatories…and get back to feeling like their normal self again. Naturally. That’s why we’re hosting a Knee Pain Workshop on Wednesday, September 9th at 7pm right here at Madden Physical Therapy in Shrewsbury in the Giant Shopping Center (right next to AAA). If you’ve been told you have arthritis, or bone-on-bone on your X-ray and you absolutely need surgery…here’s some of what you’ll learn: 1. The Top 3 Causes of Knee Pain that can lead to a Knee Replacement and a long recovery. (One of them you won’t believe…) 2. The #1 Single Biggest Mistake that Knee Pain sufferers make that can lead directly to surgery. 3. A sure-fire way to get your life back and pick the right treatment for the cause of your pain (and save you time and money). 4. What successful treatment and permanent relief look like without the side effects of unnecessary medications, injections or surgery. So, if you want to get your life back and handle the cause of your knee pain, here’s how to register to learn more. Call Heather at 717-210-9945 today. Tell her you would like to “Save your seat for the Knee Pain Workshop.” To make sure all attendees questions are answered, space is limited to 10 seats… and seats fill up FAST. I’m looking forward to seeing you there and helping you become your “normal self” again.
