Whetheryou are driving, cycling or walking along the streets of Columbia, you’ll find visual representations of the town’s history just by looking up. Volunteer Bob Smith reported that he often receives glowing feedback on these visuals, Hometown Heroes banners, as he hangs them throughout Columbia.

The banners offer a way for the community to honor those who have served in the military. The project, coordinated by the Columbia VFW Post 2435 and the Borough of Columbia, has resulted in orders of more than 520 banners since it began last summer.

Orders are still being taken for the banners, but now organizers are limiting deadlines for orders to twice a year going forward. Starting in 2024, orders received by Wednesday, Jan. 31, will be hung in the spring, and orders received by Sunday, June 30, will be hung in early fall.

“In the beginning, we were ordering banners every two weeks,” said Robin Gamby, who is helping to coordinate the project. “We still have orders coming in.” Dividing the upcoming year into two timeframes will help Smith and Borough employees who volunteer to hang the banners in their free time.

It’s a project that’s close to Smith’s heart. An Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam, Smith was inspired to start the banner project after seeing similar tributes in towns surrounding Columbia. He wasn’t sure how it would be received locally, but he’s been very happy with the response. “I love it,” he said. “It makes me feel good that we have so many orders.” Hanging the banners has also brought up memories of growing up in Columbia for Smith, who is a lifelong resident of the town.

“It’s been neat to see names of people I recognize,” he said, “and

then to realize, ‘I didn’t know they served.’”

Gamby noted that the committee members worked closely with the Marietta American Legion, which offered advice and support on the project since that organization had coordinated a similar effort. “They helped us a lot,” she said. “We’re really grateful to them.”

Banners are two sided and include the name of the honoree, along with the military branch they served in, their rank and their wartime service, if applicable. Each also includes a photo. Banners are available for any veteran, activeduty, retired or deceased man or woman who served or serves in any

branch of the military and who was born, was raised, lived or worked in Columbia.

People can request where they’d like the banner to be displayedanywhere in downtown Columbia or even near their home if it’s in the borough. “We do our best to accommodate their request,” Smith said.

To order a banner, email ColumbiaHometownHeroes@gmail .com or stop in at the Columbia VFW, Fourth and Manor streets; Smith’s Hotel, 1030 Lancaster Ave., Columbia; or Mountz & Kreiser Law Office, 553 Locust St., Columbia. More information can also be found by searching for “Columbia Home town Heroes” on Facebook.

Bring your own picnic and enjoy a night out in a unique setting, all to benefit a nonprofit organization.

Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery will hold the fifth Fête en Noir at the cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, on Friday, Sept. 8. Entrance to the grounds will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the event will run from 6 to 9 p.m.

“Guests may expect a relaxing event complete with music, conversation and fundraisers throughout the event,” said Kathy Hohenadel, who is helping to organize the Fête. “This is a great opportunity to connect with family and friends while enjoying a slightly upscale picnic atmosphere.”

Guests are encouraged to dress in black and to create a festive atmosphere by inviting friends and sharing seating at tables that will be set up in See Fête pg 4

Over Memorial Day weekend, Hilary Smith and her family had a yard sale at their home. Inspired by the response from the community, Smith had an idea.

“Our yard sale went so well, I thought, ‘Let’s do something for the church. It’s an easy fundraiser,’ recalled Smith, a member of Historic Salem United Church of Christ in Columbia.

The church will hold an indoor yard sale and bake sale on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in

the social hall, located at the rear of the church building, 324 Walnut St., Columbia.

“We will have new and used items for sale,” Smith said. “We’ll have lots of new school supplies for purchase.” School supplies will include backpacks, notebooks, pens and markers.

A variety of other items will be for sale from members of the congregation and friends who paid a fee to set up a table. “We’ll have toys, household items, books,” Smith stated. “We’ll have clothes, especially lots of girls’ clothing.”

Church furniture will also be for sale.

Baked goods, including homemade sticky buns, will be available for purchase, as well as hot dogs and sauerkraut and a variety of drinks.

Proceeds from the event will be used for the church’s property campaign. “Our goal is to raise $100,000 by the end of 2023,” Smith said. Needs at the church include replacing the roof on the social hall and redoing the parking lot. Additional fundraisers for the campaign have included a

Holding an indoor yard sale is not new to Historic Salem United Church of Christ, Smith said, noting that the church used to hold events like this one years ago. “It’s been a while since we’ve done one,” she remarked. “We’re hoping it’s a good fundraiser for us.”

She invites everyone to come to the sale, adding, “There will be lots of items to choose from and a nice variety. We’ll have some-

thing for people of all ages.”

Native tree and shrub fundraiser planned

The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program of Lancaster County will host its fourth annual native tree and shrub sale. The sale will feature a limited supply of 28 different trees and shrubs, all of which are native to Pennsylvania.

The trees and shrubs provide food, shelter and nesting habitat for wildlife, as well as

privacy, shade, foliage and landscape beautification.

Planting trees can also reduce flooding, stabilize soil and filter pollutants. The Master Watershed Stewards noted that fall is one of the best times to plant new trees.

Proceeds from this fundraiser support the Lancaster County Master Watershed Steward Program and its efforts to share information

and inspire improvements within local watersheds.

Preorders are required; no plants will be sold at the pickup locations. To place orders through Sunday, Aug. 27, visit https://extension .psu.edu/mws-tree-sale.

Plants may be picked up on Friday, Oct. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

The cemetery is full of interesting statuary and striking grave markers, and Fête participants are encouraged to walk around and explore the grounds.

“Tiki torches and other low-level lighting will provide a warm glow, and attendees will leave with a warm

feeling of having supported a worthy cause,” Hohenadel said.

She noted that the Fête en Noir is made possible through the sponsorship of the Columbia-Middletown Elks Lodge 1074, the Foresters of America Court Susquehanna 235, the Columbia American Legion Paul Revere Leber Post 372, Kleen-Rite Corporation and Nikolaus & Hohenadel. The VTF is funded by Pennsylvanians who voluntarily make a donation when applying for or renewing their driver’s license, photo ID, or motor vehicle registration. Additionally, the VTF receives proceeds from the sale of the Honoring Our Veterans and Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates and private donations. Grantees slated to receive funding identified over $2 million in matching funds pledged toward grant-funded initiatives. Combined with the VTF grants, the fundraising efforts will result in more than $2.8 million for veterans’ initiatives in Pennsylvania over the next two years.

A total of $150,000 in grant funding was available for new, innovative, or expanded programs or services provided by county directors of Veterans Affairs or the Pennsylvania Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs. The three areas of emphasis for

CARDS OF THANKS

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT. You who made me see everything and showed me the way to reach my ideal, You who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You who are in all instances, of my life, with me, I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great material desires may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Thank You for Your love towards me and my loved ones. Amen. Persons may say this prayer 3 consecutive days without asking your wish, after the 3rd day your wish will be granted, no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this dialogue as soon as your favor has been granted. Thank you. KMS

Conservation advocates win awards

The Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts (PACD) recently held its annual conference in Harrisburg. Several conservationists were recognized during an awards luncheon on July 19.

The Legislator Leadership Award was presented to Sen. Scott Martin, who was nominated by the Lancaster County Conservation District. This award recognizes legislators for outstanding efforts to further the activities and accomplishments of the state’s conservation districts or PACD on a statewide basis. As chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Martin is an advocate for conservation efforts across the state. He worked to enact the legislation that created the new statewide Agricultural Conservation Assistance Program, which represents a $154 million investment to help improve water quality and soil health. Martin was also instrumental in providing additional funding to conservation districts for their operational needs through

the state budget process.

Piper Sherburne was one of two recipients of the President’s Award. The PACD executive board presidentcurrently Kelly Stagenselects an individual, organization, or agency to receive this award in recognition of their outstanding efforts that

have resulted in furthering the accomplishments of PACD. Sherburne is PACD’s South East Region director and chair of the Berks County Conservation District board. She was recognized for her efforts to eradicate the spotted lanternfly in Pennsylvania. Sherburne is known
