GIANT Now Accepting SNAP Benefits Online
The Giant Company recently announced that Pennsylvania customers who participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will now be able to shop online for both grocery pickup and delivery via Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct using their Pennsylvania Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) ACCESS card.
People in eligible lowincome households can adopt more nutritious diets with SNAP, increasing their food purchasing power at grocery stores and supermarkets. Those who are eligible receive an EBT ACCESS Card to make food purchases.
Applications for SNAP and other public assistance programs can be submitted at www.compass.state.pa.us. Onsite County Assistance Office (CAO) services are also available if clients cannot access services through the COMPASS website, via the myCOMPASS PA mobile app or by calling the Customer Service Centers at 877-395-8930.
To shop via Giant Direct or Martin’s Direct, customers need to add their EBT Card, add their groceries to their online cart and then enter their PIN and pay for the items. When customers shop online, they can only use their SNAP benefits on the same items that are eligible when shopping in the store. Minimum order values will not apply to SNAP users, but pickup and delivery fees will be applied to each order.

Treasury Announces Unclaimed Property
Pennsyvlania residents are advised to check with the Pennsylvania Treasury’s Bureau of Unclaimed Property to see if they have property, including military decorations, waiting to be claimed.
Nearly $4 billion in collectibles, dormant bank and retirement accounts, jewelry, military medals, rebates, stocks, and uncashed checks have not yet been claimed by their rightful owners. The unclaimed property may also include items from safe deposit boxes.
Residents can search the registry by visiting www.patreasury.gov or by calling the Treasury’s Bureau of Unclaimed Property toll-free at 800222-2046.
Veterans and families of service members can search a database of unclaimed military decorations at www.patreasury.gov/unclaimed -property/medals/ as they may be owed Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars, and more. Currently, 650 military decorations lie unclaimed in Pennsylvania’s Treasury.

Friday night’s festivities will feature a car show, with trophies awarded in various categories. The car show will begin at 5 p.m. On Saturday morning, a horseshoe tournament will be held, and monetary prizes will be presented. To register for the horseshoe tournament, contact Barry Sweitzer at 717-755-4406. Potosky said that ride-allnight wristbands will be available each evening during the carnival and that admission to the carnival is free.
On Saturday evening, the carnival will wrap up with fireworks at 9:30 p.m. “They will be really outstanding fireworks,” Potosky stated. “It will be something to see.”
The carnival started more than a decade ago, when members of Hellam Recreation were looking for an event to bring the community together.
“There used to be a carnival back in the day and Phil Smith, the township supervisor, said, ‘Why don’t we have a carnival again?’” Potosky recalled. “Everybody jumped on board, because we all liked the idea. As a recreation group, we did so many activities for the youths, but we didn’t really have any activities for adults or anyone else in the community. We felt the carnival was one way we could reach part of the community our organization wasn’t touching.”
Although Hellam Recreation no longer organizes the carnival, the event’s mission has remained the same. It’s a chance to bring people together to socialize and have fun, Potosky said.
“We also have the support of the fire department and ambulance and the fire police, who direct traffic,” he said. “We have policemen who walk through and make sure everything is going smoothly. The carnival is a total community endeavor.”
The Hellam Carnival will be held Aug. 25 through 28.
Labor Day Weekend Events Planned In York
A variety of family-friendly events will take place in downtown York on Labor Day weekend.
Downtown restaurants and businesses will offer specials and events during the monthly First Friday celebration on Sept. 3 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Downtown Inc will coordinate and post information about individual events happening around town that day. For more details, visit www.downtownyorkpa.com.
The York Revolution will play games on Wednesday, Sept. 1, through Monday, Sept. 6, against the Long Island Ducks and South Maryland Blue Crabs.
On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4 and 5, Penn Park will be the site of 10,000 Acts of Kindness and What the Food Trucks, which will be free events. The two organizations decided to team up to share resources and market the two events. The 10,000 Acts of Kindness 2nd Multicultural Unity Through Kindness Concert and Festival will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The event will include a concert, a community resource fair, food and fun.
On Sunday, What the Food Trucks will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. More than 40 food trucks will line the streets around the park, and the event will also include a large stage for entertainment, a Community Corner featuring York’s nonprofits, and a Treasure Island pop-up beer and wine garden. The event is free to enter, and all activities are free. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
What the Food Trucks is organized by CrocodileDog Marketing. In 2019, more than 20,000 people visited downtown York for What the Food Trucks, many spending the day under tents with friends.
The decision to build a new facility was not taken lightly, said Phil Smith, chair of the board of supervisors. The old building dates to at least the 1970s, and it needed extensive repairs, he explained. Since the township already owned the land across the street, the decision was made to build a new facility rather than trying to fix the old one. The old building will be given to the Kreutz Creek Library, which will move from its current FEMA trailer location next door.
To complete the project, the township hired a grant writer and a financial adviser, who helped keep the construction within budget, Mann said. “We received over $1 million in grants,” she stated. Lobar Associates handled the design and building of the project, which allowed the township to customize the plans to meet its specific needs, including creating a covered and gated area for police cars to park.
“We now have the space to upgrade our police department,” Smith said, noting that the department is working toward accreditation and the improved facility will help achieve that goal.
The open house will be the first time the public has been invited into the building since it opened, Smith remarked. It’s important for township members to see where their tax dollars are going, he said.
“Part of our vision in building this was to be as transparent as possible so people can see what we’re doing with their money,” he commented. “Even though our space is bigger, we did everything in a frugal way. We didn’t build a Taj Mahal.”
Mann invited anyone who is interested to come to the open house and meet the people who serve the community. “Come out and see more about how the municipality runs,” she said.
