Spreading A Pandemic Of Love
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
By Ann Mead Ash
With unemployment in the double digits nationally and with limits on how much socialization can be done in person, starting a blog might seem like an ideal solution. Bloggers can earn an income while interacting with people outside their own households from the safety of their homes. However, there is more to becoming a successful blogger than just opening a WordPress account. It is easy to start a blog, but it can be challenging to keep it going. “I stay motivated because I picked a topic that is just our life. It’s something that I’m very interested in,” said Ephrata resident Kathy McClure, who launched the Frugal Lancaster blog in 2010. “Don’t start a blog on something new to you. Choose something that you’re already doing and interested in.” See Blog pg 4
Looking back at the abrupt changes he dealt with last March when COVID-19 restrictions temporarily closed the state, Spencer Browne, now a rising senior at The Stone School in Lancaster, was philosophical. “When something as shocking as a pandemic happens, there are many different ways to (react),” noted Spencer. “I think it consumes a lot of people and they are stuck in shock about the world being so different they can’t do anything … but we saw
it as an opportunity to help people who are in that stasis.” Spencer, along with his family, which consists of his parents, Jen and Sean See Pandemic Of Love pg 3

A Way To Honor Your Grandparents
An outdoor worship service, food trucks, pony rides, free lunch for first responders and more will be offered during the Hometown Heroes Celebration to be held on Sunday, Sept. 6, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wrightsville Assembly of God, 365 Orange St., Wrightsville. The event is free, and community members are invited to attend. The first-time event will be held outdoors at the church. “We typically have two identical services at 9 and 11 a.m. On that day, we are having one outdoor worship service at 11 a.m.,” explained pastor Aaron McNatt, noting that people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. “(For the worship leaders), we will have a flatbed trailer with a stage on it.” In keeping with COVID-19 restrictions, seating will be spaced out. “Masks are suggested,” said McNatt. “There will be plenty of room to social distance. They
can sit as far apart as they desire. We are not passing offering plates or Communion trays. All of our greeters and servers will be wearing masks.” Following the service, people may purchase lunch and snacks from food

obstacle course for children. “People who are not comfortable being in a large gathering can come and go,” McNatt noted. As part of the hometown heroes aspect of the event, local first responders, including those from the Hellam Township Police Department and Wrightsville Fire and Rescue Company 41, have been invited to attend the event and they will receive free food. First responders will be asked to provide identification. “We have invited our police department - I’ve already contacted Chief Doug Pollock and our fire department Chief Chad Livelsberger. They will be present,” said McNatt. “We’ve invited all of our EMTs and first responders to come to the event. To honor them, we will have a voucher for them, and they can take it to a food truck and lunch is on us.” McNatt said that the congregation was anxious to hold a community-wide event since the church’s annual Easter egg hunt was canceled. “Wrightsville is a small town with 2,000 people in the borough. year and in October a Fall Fest event,” he noted. “We will have 1,000 people out at each of these events. Because we had to cancel the Easter egg hunt and we haven’t had any of those large community events yet this year, we wanted to have an outdoor event.” He noted that congregation members will also be able to socialize since many of them attend separate services on Sundays. “For our church (members), it’s a great opportunity to see the other half of the congregation,” said McNatt. “We have over 100 people in each of these (Sunday) gatherings. Our facility does not allow us to be all together in the building. It will be good for them to see the other half of the church.” He added that because the church is situated near the Susquehanna River, it attracts residents of both York and Lancaster counties. Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, will offer two classes this fall. “Mastering the Monologue will take place on Tuesdays, Sept. 8 through Oct. 13. One of the most intimidating aspects of auditions can be the monologue. In “Mastering the Monologue, local director and actor Kevin Ditzler will guide attendees through what they need to know to make an impact at their next general audition. Partcipants may join via Zoom for this small group class that will allow them to work privately, perform for an audience, and receive real-time feedback. This class will provide weekly 60-minute group sessions for performance and one weekly 30-minute session for each student with Ditzler for in-depth one-on-one work. Participants will leave the class with two audition-ready monologues.
Acting and Scene Study will be offered on Thursdays, Sept. 17 to Nov. 5. This class is for committed, experienced actors age 18 and up who wish to refine their craft. Starting from existing foundations of technique, participants will consider physical life, emotional life, and character development through text analysis, improvisation, and warm-up exercises with paired scene partners to explore the actors’ instrument in a safe environment. Managing artistic director Jim Johnson will teach the class. Class size will be limited to 12 to 16 actors. A final showcase is possible, but the emphasis will be on discovering strengths and weaknesses, not performance. There is a registration fee for each class. To register, readers may visit https://marietta arts.org/ and select Education Programs.

Jen explained that Pandemic of Love focuses on putting together the puzzle pieces of donors and recipients. “We look at what someone wants to give and try to connect people who are a good fit for each other, she said. “So if (someone can’t pay a) bill for $150 and we have someone who has $150 to give, I connect those and then they pay the bill directly. In addition to utility bills, the organization has fielded requests for help with groceries, fuel, and medication. She said gift cards for those items are tremendously helpful. One recipient had a service dog that was ill and needed help with vet bills and to purchase special food. W hen a donor has food to give away, Jen turns to the caterer Scarlet Runner to help distribute it to the recipients. Even as the state has reopened, Jen said that many residents continue to be affected economically for a variety of reasons. “Some people have not been able to go back to work because their employer is not going to reopen, but also a lot of people (have) anxiety (that) is preventing them from going back, she explained. Because there are only two chapters in the state, Jen and the other volunteers have fielded requests from tiny towns as well as from Philadelphia. They ask donors if they have a preference for keeping donations local. Spencer noted that Pandemic of Love is unusual because it is completely run by volunteers who do not actually handle the donations. “Pandemic of Love has no overhead costs, he explained. “There’s no money involved in the matching process. People come to us and we document everything.

Browne, and his brother, Jayden, home from college in Minnesota, joined forces with volunteers Michelle Simon and Deb Miller and fellow students Jayna Ribner and Henry Willis to form the Lancaster chapter of Pandemic of Love. The grassroots, nonprofit organization connects those in need with those who have something to give. It has more than 650 volunteers nationally and, as of late June, had matched nearly 190,000 donors with those in need for $25.1 million in transactions. Pandemic of Love was founded in Florida by Shelly Tyglielski. “She started it for her community, said Jen, who noted that the idea spread quickly and soon became a global network. Jen shared the story of the nonprofit’s founding with her family, and by late May, she had contacted Tyglielski through www.pandemicoflove.com. By early June, all the Lancaster volunteers had been trained via an online forum, and the Lancaster County chapter was ready to let the public know of its existence. Jen lauded Spencer and Jayna and their expertise in social media for helping to get the word out. “I really credit the young volunteers with making this as successful as it’s been, said Jen. “They know how to tag the right people. We are fortunate to have young volunteers who know what they’re doing. Thanks to the volunteers’ hard work, by early July, the Lancaster Chapter had matched 30 donors with recipients. “What was shocking in the beginning is that I had so many donors who were interested, recalled Jen, noting that at one point she had more donors than people in need. “I was so impressed with that, she said.

In addition to WordPress, McClure listed Buffer and Later for scheduling Facebook and Instagram posts, respectively; MailerLite and ConvertKit for email marketing; E-junkie for file downloads; and Tailwind for managing Pinterest. McClure also recommended connecting with other bloggers and is herself a member of a Facebook group for Lancaster County bloggers. Thanks to work she put into the blog in the early years when her children were little, McClure now needs to spend only about five hours a week on it. Ultimately, patience, persistence, and dedication are key to running a successful blog. “Don’t expect the money right away, McClure advised. “You’re doing it to share whatever you know, your knowledge. You’re doing it to connect with people.

The majority of feedback on McClure’s posts has been positive, but when the occasional troll pops up, McClure simply deletes the comment. Other times she allows the comment to remain but does not respond, and yet other times she engages. Each instance has to be handled on a case-by-case basis, she noted. Traditionally, these have included advertisements placed on a page as well as sponsored posts in which businesses pay bloggers to write about products or events. Now, there are services like Patreon through which bloggers may offer special access to posts on Instagram or subscriptions so readers will not see ads on their blogs. Running an Instagram account, along with having an active Facebook page or group, has become crucial for earning an income from blogging. McClure spends as much time on Facebook and Instagram posts as she does on blog posts, and she uses her blog as a content resource center where she creates posts that she shares on social media. “I think I’ve become more of an influencer than a blogger, she said. “It’s a lot of Instagram

McClure began blogging as a way to share with others how she and her husband saved money while raising children. Initially, the blog focused on how to use coupons effectively. It also featured a part-discount, partreferral deal program, and McClure estimated that her family saved more than $1,000 on dining and entertainment thanks to the program that first year. As the family grew and ways to save money changed from coupons to gas points, the blog also shifted. “I just share about things I use and do myself, McClure said. “Most of the time, it’s just, we’re living life, and I share it. During the last few months, McClure has seen people starting blogs on current hot topics such as homesteading and homeschooling. “Look at your gifts and your interests. Look at what people are asking you about and go from there. Be creative. Try it and see what works. Some people start channels for their pets, she said. “If it brings you joy,

Mountville Fire Company Seeks Community Support By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Mountville residents should have received a markedly different fund drive mailing from the Mountville Fire Company (MFC) within the past few weeks. “We tried some new things this year: We added color and PayPal,” said MFC public information officer and senior firefighter Peter Taraborelli. “ We got 60 responses right away - impressive!” As an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, the MFC depends on donations to continue serving Mountville borough, parts of East and West Hempfield townships, and surrounding municipalities. Adding an electronic donation option has the benefit of enabling donors to commit to recurring donations at weekly, monthly, and yearly intervals. “ We have a lot of people who’ve set up never-ending (donations),” Taraborelli said. “Three, five, 10 bucks every month is helpful because we can start to depend on it.” One-time gifts are also welcomed, of course, and the MFC hopes to raise $50,000 through the fund drive. Writing the letter presents the MFC with an opportunity to rework its punch list. “(We prioritize purchases that promote) life, safety, and specific to our mission over things that would make our lives easier,”
Taraborelli explained. The MFC regularly sacrifices maintenance costs in favor of buying lifesaving equipment, but at some point, the leaking 14year-old roof really must be replaced and the pitted parking lot has to be repaved for the first time since the 1980s. The organization would also like to upgrade the electronic key system on the building to improve security. Operating the emergency vehicles is pricy, and replacing them costs even more. With the MFC responding to 339 calls in 2019, the apparatus roll out into the community almost daily. The oldest vehicle in the fleet is an engine that has been in service for at least 30 years. The newest piece is already about 10 years old. Taraborelli noted that the base price for a fire engine is about $750,000, so the MFC has delayed replacing the older units. The MFC made a change to its registration with the Internal Revenue Service this year that may help with expenses over time. When the MFC first filed for nonprofit status, it was registered as a 501(c)(4), a designation for volunteer firefighter organizations. However, most of the other local fire companies opted for a 501(c)(3) designation. That impeded applications for grants and hindered mergers with other fire companies. The Mountville Welfare

The MFC’s bylaws were updated, the constitution was rewritten, and the MFC is in a better position for the future. “We changed from a social to a charitable organization,” Taraborelli remarked. “Now we are an organization that takes this seriously - it’s represented in our status - we are here to protect the community.” Community members are always welcome to check out the MFC’s financial records to see how donations are spent, Taraborelli said. Lancaster Awarded NEA Grant The City of Lancaster was awarded a $50,000 grant in July by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the Office of Public Art’s Public Art Community Engagement (PACE) program. The grant was awarded to fund the new PACE manager position in the Office of Public Art, which will run the PACE Neighbors program. The PACE manager will also support the Office of Neighborhood Engagement through resident-driven public art projects. The position was posted on Feb. 14 and applications closed on March 13, but the selection
process was delayed due to COVID-19. The Office of Public Art was one of 855 organizations nationwide to receive a grant from the NEA. The grants were made possible through CARES Act funding to support previous NEA award recipients with staff salaries, fees for artists or contractual personnel, and facilities costs. This award marks the third grant that the City of Lancaster has received from the NEA in the last year. To learn more, readers may visit www.cityoflancaster pa.com.

Corn Cob Acres Set To Open Giant Introduces Reusable Bag Final preparations are underway for Corn Cob Acres’ 11th season of family fun on the farm. Saturday, Sept. 5, will mark opening day with new activities, including a large corn bin, lots of yard games, and an expanded Hidden Acres area of its park. Pig race shows and Bunnyville will also return. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Corn Cob Acres’ final preparations took a different path this year. Staff have created new and fun activities to enjoy, but they also spent time creating plans to ensure the safety of guests and staff.

FORMER KNEE PAIN SUFFERER SHARES: “I was looking at surgery…But now there’s no need.” New Knee Pain Workshop Helps Local People Get Back to Normal Naturally, Without Unnecessary Pain Pills, Injections, or Surgeries. • • • • • •
Are you careful how you move because you’re afraid your knee might “give out”? Do you find yourself taking Tylenol, Aleve or Advil just to get through the day? Are you missing out on family time because of knee pain? Have you changed the way you do everyday activities - like going up and down stairs or getting in and out of a car? Do you try to just “keep going” but you feel limited in what you can do? Do you feel worn out and held back because of your knee?
If you answered “YES” to any of the above questions, the Knee Pain Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “When I first started my PT at Madden, I had trouble with just about everything. My knees hurt and sometimes fell out from under me. Since my PT, I have been able to clean with a bit of pain but nothing like it had been and I am able to do things with my grandkids again! When I went on vacation, I put so many steps on my legs and didn’t mind at all!” -Sharon M. Knee pain can completely destroy your life…we’ve seen it many times. It can make you avoid the things you once loved doing such as taking walks with the dog, spending time outdoors with the family, or even doing simple household chores. I’ve seen many folks afraid to do everyday things like going up and down the stairs or getting out of the car because they don’t know if their knee is going to “give out” and make them fall. Knee pain can: • Make you feel like you’re not your normal self… • It can zap and take away your energy… • It can make you feel depressed as you see other people doing the things you wish you could be doing… It can be a downward spiral. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy we’ve helped literally hundreds of knee pain sufferers cancel their surgery, get off of pain meds and anti-inflammatories…and get back to feeling like their normal self again. Naturally. That’s why we’re hosting a Knee Pain Workshop on Wednesday, September 9th at 7pm right here at Madden Physical Therapy in Shrewsbury in the Giant Shopping Center (right next to AAA).
