Honoring heroes in Columbia Girl Scouts encourage people to shop local

Whetheryou are driving, cycling or walking along the streets of Columbia, you’ll find visual representations of the town’s history just by looking up. Volunteer Bob Smith reported that he often receives glowing feedback on these visuals, Hometown Heroes banners, as he hangs them throughout Columbia.

The banners offer a way for the community to honor those who have served in the military. The project, coordinated by the Columbia VFW Post 2435 and the Borough of Columbia, has resulted in orders of more than 520 banners since it began last summer.

Orders are still being taken for the banners, but now organizers are limiting deadlines for orders to twice a year going forward. Starting in 2024, orders received by Wednesday, Jan. 31, will be hung in the spring, and orders received by Sunday, June 30, will be hung in early fall.

“In the beginning, we were ordering banners every two weeks,” said Robin Gamby, who is helping to coordinate the project. “We still have orders coming in.” Dividing the upcoming year into two timeframes will help Smith and Borough employees who volunteer to hang the banners in their free time.

It’s a project that’s close to Smith’s heart. An Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam, Smith was inspired to start the banner project after seeing similar tributes in towns surrounding Columbia. He wasn’t sure how it would be received locally, but he’s been very happy with the response. “I love it,” he said. “It makes me feel good that we have so many orders.” Hanging the banners has also brought up memories of growing up in Columbia for Smith, who is a lifelong resident of the town.

“It’s been neat to see names of people I recognize,” he said, “and then to realize, ‘I didn’t know

they served.’”

Gamby noted that the committee members worked closely with the Marietta American Legion, which offered advice and support on the project since that organization had coordinated a similar effort. “They helped us a lot,” she said. “We’re really grateful to them.”

Banners are two sided and include the name of the honoree, along with the military branch they served in, their rank and their wartime service, if applicable. Each also includes a photo. Banners are available for any veteran, activeduty, retired or deceased man or woman who served or serves in any

branch of the military and who was born, was raised, lived or worked in Columbia.

People can request where they’d like the banner to be displayedanywhere in downtown Columbia or even near their home if it’s in the borough. “We do our best to accommodate their request,” Smith said.

To order a banner, email ColumbiaHometownHeroes@gmail .com or stop in at the Columbia VFW, Fourth and Manor streets; Smith’s Hotel, 1030 Lancaster Ave., Columbia; or Mountz & Kreiser Law Office, 553 Locust St., Columbia. More information can also be found by searching for “Columbia Hometown Heroes” on Facebook.

For many, following through with things - finishing what one starts - is a learned life lesson. It requires discipline, focus and commitment.

With their Girl Scout careers winding down, Bethany Rector and Kathryn Fives are also nearing completion of one of their most involved projects.

Both 17, Kathryn and Bethany are the only members of Troop See Girl Scouts pg 3

Taizé service offers opportunity for reflection

There’s something powerful about silence. It offers an opportunity for reflection and meditation, and it’s an integral part of a Taizé worship service.

Named for the Taizé region of France where it originated, the service includes elements of Catholic and Protestant traditions, with a focus on spirituality.

A Taizé service is held on the first Saturday of the month at St. Luke Episcopal Church, 209 S. Market St., Mount Joy, beginning at 5 p.m.

The next service will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 2.

The Rev. Martha Harris leads the service, which began at St. Luke under the direction of former pastor Rev. Beth Mollard. After Harris became priest in charge in January, she took over the Taizé service in February.

“The church is an ideal venue because of its small sanctuary size,” Harris said. “It’s an intimate setting.” The sanctuary is darkened for the candlelit service.

Participants enter the church in silence, and the service includes See Taizé pg 2

psalms of praise, read-andrespond recitations, prayers, Bible readings and chants. Worshippers are invited to light a candle at the altar during the service in memory or honor of someone as well.

Initially, the Taizé service featured recorded music, but after April’s service, Harris recruited musicians to play live at the service.

“I’ve been on a search for musicians, especially ones who play instruments that are conducive to small spaces,” she said. In Lancaster, she found Davie Krak, who plays the Irish harp.

“He hadn’t heard of Taizé before, but he was interested,” Harris recalled, noting that Krak created original compositions for the service. “He plays beautiful music.”

At the Sept. 2 service, Jonathan Hansen will accompany Krak with music on wooden Native American flutes as well.

At the end of the service, people may leave in silence, or they may stay in the sanctuary for Communion.

One of the best things to come out of the Taizé services has been the opportunity to welcome new people into the St. Luke’s sanctuary, Harris said.

“We’ve had people here who have never been to St. Luke’s,” she noted. Harris is also priest in charge at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Columbia, and members of that congregation have also come to the Taizé service.

“You don’t have to be Episcopalian or even a religious person to come to this ser-

vice,” she emphasized. “Anyone can appreciate the opportunity to worship in their own mind and heart while also being part of the community.”

She encourages anyone who’s interested to see what a Taizé service is all about.

“This is a come-as-you-are

type of service,” she said. “People often say they are spiritual, but not necessarily religious. This is an opportunity to practice that in an ancient way.”

20766 of East York, one of the smallest Girl Scout troops in the world. Their recent project is called the York County Market Quest.

“For Kathryn, Girl Scouts has been a chance to be part of a bigger organization, part of a worldwide organization,” said Beth Fives, Kathryn’s mom and the leader of Troop 20766. “I think when she takes a step back it will be like, ‘Hey, look at all these things I accomplished while I was in Girl Scouts.’ She’s accomplished things as part of her commitment to Girl Scouts moving forward.”

Not a fundraiser, the York County Market Quest is essentially a promotional campaign spearheaded by Bethany and Kathryn to highlight the importance of local business and the production of local foods. Kathryn and Bethany’s idea was to create a contest where participants were motivated by prizes to visit seven York County farm markets, orchards and roadside markets and track their visits by scanning QR codes.

The entry deadline for the promotional contest is Saturday, Sept. 30.

“They did most of the work with some guidance from me,” said Beth Fives. “The goal is to get people to think more local, to get them to think about where they get their food. There’s something to be said for supporting local businesses. Everyone was very receptive of the idea.”

“We originally got into this project because we wanted to learn more about where our food comes from,” said Kathryn. “In doing this pro-

ject, we are sharing what we learned by promoting local farms while being able to show people where their food comes from by a smaller and fresher source.”

The girls began working on the York County Market Quest project in February by formulating ideas and laying out plans to implement them.

Bethany and Kathryn created posters for each individual location and contacted the local businesses via email and phone calls.

“They got to learn about some of the local markets and that there are so many cool markets in the area,” said Beth Fives. “It’s an opportunity for the girls to experience and learn about things they wouldn’t normally get to know about. They also got to learn about leadership. As a leader in this project, they had to do things they weren’t used to. Understanding how to be a leader and how to work as a team are super valuable lessons.”

A former Girl Scout herself, Beth Fives founded Troop 20766 in 2011 when Kathryn was in kindergarten. At that time, 25 girls were involved with the troop. Bethany and Kathryn, whose years in Girl Scouts will come to an end upon their graduation from high school, are the only remaining active members.

“I wanted to give Kathryn and her friends all the great opportunities that Girl Scouts presents,” said Beth Fives.

The American Heart Association invites people from across York and Adams counties to fight heart disease and stroke by participating in the 2023 York Heart Walk and Adams County Heart Walk on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Both the York and Adams County Heart Walks will be held at new locations this year. The York event will take participants on a 1.5mile walk through the York College campus. Festivities will begin at 8 a.m., and the

walk will step off at 9 a.m. starting at Graham Field, 899 S. Richland Ave., York. The Adams County Heart Walk will feature a 1-mile walk through Gettysburg Recreation Park, 545 Long Lane, Gettysburg. Festivities will start at 12:30 p.m., and the walk will step off at 1:30 p.m.

The Heart Walk raises funds to support the mission of the American Heart Association and save lives from heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. It is also an opportunity for families, co-workers and communities to come together to participate in a heart-healthy activity while honoring those who have been affected by heart disease and stroke, including 43-yearold heart transplant survivor Asheley Walters of Dillsburg.

Walters learned at 11 years old that she had a genetic heart condition, which turned into heart failure. At a young age, she was battling persistent breathlessness, a declining quality of life and atrial fibrillation, which eventually led to her having a stroke when she

was 30. By the time she was 38, her heart function was so compromised that her health care team determined that a heart transplant was her best chance at survival. She is now five years post-transplant, full of energy and ready to share her story to kick off the Heart Walks.

The York and Adams County Heart Walks are cochaired by Brent Doores, vice president of finance at Family First Health, and Michael Cogliano Sr., president of WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital.

Doores joined Family First Health in April. He oversees all day-to-day financial operations and strategic fiscal initiatives for the organization. He previously served as CEO for Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of York and in leadership roles across a variety of service lines and specialties for 15 years at WellSpan Health, including urgent care, heart and vascular services, and revenue management.

CLOG-FREE GUTTERS

Cogliano has served WellSpan Health for the past 25 years, 22 years of which have been at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital. He began his career as a registered cardiovascular invasive specialist, giving him an appreciation for the impact of heart disease on individuals, families, and communities. Cogliano has volunteered for numerous organizations and community boards, including serving as past chair of the Adams County Economic Development Corporation. He also served as chair of the York and Adams County Heart Walks in 2022.

To learn more or sign up to participate, visit www.heart.org/yorkwalk. From there, participants can stay up to date by downloading the Heart Walk mobile app and encourage friends and family to join in via email or social media.

The funds raised from the Heart Walks go toward research, advocacy, CPR training and promoting better health in support of the association’s 2024 Health Equity Impact Goal of reducing barriers to health care access and quality. Visit www.heart.org to learn more.

The weeklong DeMolay leadership training conference was attended by more than 70 DeMolay members from Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia. The conference offered attendees the opportunity to learn leadership skills and to set personal goals that may prepare them for future service to the organization as well as life in general.
