A Passion For Painting BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“I love art, because you are able to do whatever you want with it,” said Alana Cassel, who owns The Glazing Sun in Wrightsville. “There are no guidelines on creativity.” Cassel, 24, spends her days getting creative, hand-painting and firing pottery from her studio on Hellam Street. Although she’s passionate about her small business, this wasn’t always Cassel’s path.
Heritage Day celebrates Wrightsville’s history.
Honoring Wrightsville’s Heritage BY CATHY MOLITORIS
rightsville has a long and interesting history, and that history will be celebrated at the 46th annual Heritage Day. Organized by Historic Wrightsville Inc. (HWI), the celebration will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. along Fourth and Locust streets. Because the date corresponds with the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attack, HWI will honor local first responders with a recognition program beginning at noon. The organization will also introduce the Kenneth Stoner Award for Excellence and Community Service in memory of the past president of HWI and an active community member who passed away this year. Heritage Day will also include a Civil War encampment by the 45th Pennsylvania Volunteers, Company K at the Wrightsville Historical Museum, located at 309 Locust St. “The man who built our building, Calvin Budding, was a member of this unit during the Civil War,” explained Joyce Heiserman, chair of events for HWI. The encampment will include three programs - Life of a Soldier at 10:30 a.m., Manual of
“There’s a lot of local history and heritage in Wrightsville ... This year’s Heritage Day connects the past with the present, from the Civil War to 9/11.” Susquehanna Dodge will sponsor a car show, Heiserman said, noting the show is open to all vehicles but will focus on Jeeps. “We thought that would be nice since jeeps were used in World War II and were used by first responders,” she stated. “We’re inviting anyone with a Jeep, old or new, to participate.” A local Model A club will also be participating in the car show. “And, if anyone has a first responder vehicle, they are welcome to enter that as well,” Heiserman stated. A People’s Choice award will be presented.
Heritage Day will also feature an interfaith cornhole tournament at 10:30 a.m., with two-member teams from local churches competing, as well as old-fashioned games for children. Music will be provided by the Emigsville Band. Food will be available for purchase from food trucks and vendors. “We’ll have our popular cheddar cheese wedges,” Heiserman shared, adding that the item sells quickly and reservations for the cheese can be made by calling the museum at 717-252-1169. Additional food will include chicken corn soup, root beer floats and homemade apple sundaes. The organization’s holiday tea cookbook will be available for purchase, and tickets will be sold for HWI’s Stories by Lantern Light ghost tour in October. Heritage Day was originally created to display and honor the local heritage of the community, Heiserman said, and this year’s celebration will continue that tradition. “There’s a lot of local history and heritage in Wrightsville,” she stated. “This year’s Heritage Day connects the past with the present, from the Civil War to 9/11.” For more information on Heritage Day, call the museum at the aforementioned number or email historicwrightsville1983@gmail.com.

You’re Invited To Rally Day BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Walking in the doors of a new church can be intimidating. Jesse North, pastor of Wrightsville Presbyterian Church, is hoping to change that. The church, located at 205 N. Second St., will hold a Rally Day event on Sunday, Sept. 12. “I’m hoping Rally Day is like putting out a big welcome mat,” North said. “It can be hard to break into a new church, even if you’ve been wanting to. We want everyone to know they are welcome here.”

“I was going to college for nursing,” she recalled. “My whole family had hyped me up to be a nurse.” It was a part-time job during college that sparked a career change. “I was working at The PotteryWorks in downtown Lancaster, and I loved it,” Cassel said. “I’ve always loved art. One day, I realized, I don’t want to be a nurse. I want to do something art related, something small-business related. I wanted to make my own schedule and my own rules.” Cassel dropped out of nursing school, earned her associate degree in business from Penn State Harrisburg and began selling her pottery on social media. When she signed up to do her first craft show four years ago, she had to come up with a business name. The Glazing Sun pays tribute to both Cassel’s sunny personality and the type of paint she uses, called glaze. Cassel set up The Glazing Sun in the living room of her mom’s Wrightsville house and arranged to use the kiln

Lancaster AMBUCS will hold its first-ever Lancaster AmTryke Derby on Sunday, Sept. 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The event’s purpose is to provide an opportunity for the
approximately 85 AmTrykes recipients from the past five years to gather to ride their trykes, share experiences and enjoy an afternoon of activities. AmTrykes are specially designed three-wheeled vehicles given by AMBUCS to children and young adults whose
physical conditions require them to keep their hands and feet active to avoid contraction and increase strength. All AmTryke riders and their families are invited to attend the event, which will include noncompetitive riding courses, entertainment and
refreshments. In the case of rain, the event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 26. The chief mission of the Lancaster AMBUCS chapter, a Lancaster-based service organization dating to 1925, is to purchase, build and grant AmTrykes.

Rally Day will kick off with a 10 a.m. church service, followed by a church picnic. “This is an opportunity for us to preview our Christian education programs for kids and adults,” North noted. The picnic will provide an opportunity for fellowship and a fresh start after a difficult year for everyone, he said. “It’s a chance to sort of restart,” he explained. “We’ve worked really hard during the pandemic to be safe, sometimes having services in person, sometimes livestreaming, and we’re still going to be livestreaming. But this is about getting people together to connect in person.” North said Rally Day will provide an opportunity to see what Wrightsville Presbyterian is all about. “If you’re thinking, ‘I’d really like to get back to church,’ or even, ‘I’ve never really been a part of a church, but my kids and I could use something positive in our lives,’ this is the place for you,” he said. He’s quick to point out that

he doesn’t have all the answers, but he’s willing to help people who are questioning their faith. “We try to be a place where it’s OK if you have questions, it’s OK if you have doubts,” he said. “We don’t think we have it all figured out either. This is a place where we encourage conversations and questions and we want to support everybody,
no matter where they are in their faith journey.” The church members have spent the past year trying to be not only safe as the pandemic impacted the community, but also responsive to the community’s needs, he noted. “The church is about being together, which has been hard this past year,” North stated. “We’ve been
working really hard to figure out a way to keep people safe, but also keep people together. We hope Wrightsville Presbyterian can be a place where people can connect with God, grow and figure out how to love their neighbors better.” For more information on Wrightsville Presbyterian Church, visit www.wpcpa.org.

Painting from pg 1 in The PotteryWorks, spending hours transporting fragile pottery pieces back and forth across the river. When an opportunity arose in June to open her own studio, she took a leap of faith. During this time, Cassel also got married and bought a house, which she is renovating. And she purchased her own kiln, saving her the trips to Lancaster. Cassel mostly specializes in hand-painted mugs, but she creates all sorts of pottery pieces, including planters, trinket dishes, ring holders and more. “I love color, so I use a lot of it,” she said. “I don’t have a rhyme or reason for how I approach a piece. Each one is different.” She sells her products across the United States. “There are only about three or four states I haven’t shipped to yet,” she said. Locally, The Glazing Sun

products can be found at the Prussian Street Arcade in Manheim, Molly’s Courtyard Café in Marietta and York and Virtue Art Market in Hellam. Cassel acknowledges that being a small-business owner does have its challenges. “The work never stops,” she commented. “You can’t call in sick, and it’s hard to shut work off at the end of the day.” Still, she said, she can’t imagine doing anything else, and she encourages others to follow their dreams. “I would encourage anyone with a passion to just jump into it,” she said. “Just say to yourself, ‘I know I can do this.’ I manifested what I wanted to happen, and it has. Some days, I can’t believe this is what I do for a living.” For more information on The Glazing Sun, visit https://theglazingsun.com.

FRIDAY JULY 9, 2021 • VOL. 51, NO. 27
Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.
The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.
July Is Customer Appreciation Month At The Emporium The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Each time a customer receives an invoice, they will receive a raffle ticket, thus the more a customer buys, the more chances they have of winning. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case. The Emporium will be divided into three sections, starting with its dealers located on Route 130 and ending with the dealers on River Continued on page 5
