St. John’s Herr Estate Announces Fall Fest By Chelsea Peifer
The annual St. John’s Herr Estate (SJHE) Fall Fest, featuring an indoor yard sale and food sale, will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. Plenty of free parking for the event will be available at the main building, located at 200 Luther Lane, Columbia. Items for sale will include household goods, dishes and glassware, seasonal and holiday decorations, plants, linens, clothing, jewelry, purses, books, CDs, lamps, picture frames, tools, and more. “There’s something for everyone,” said volunteer Ann Grubb, adding that everything will be reasonably priced. One area will feature items handmade by residents, including several knitted and crocheted creations. Food, including chicken corn soup,
hot dogs, sandwiches, and beverages, will be available for purchase as well. Chicken corn soup may also be purchased by the quart for carryout. Residents will also sell a variety of homemade baked goods, such as pies, cakes, cookies, fudge, bread, and caramel popcorn - all of which organizers say tend to be bestsellers each year. The event is sponsored by the SJHE Residents’ Council. All proceeds from Fall Fest will be donated to local nonprofit organizations like Hands Across the Street, Columbia Quick Response Service, Luthercare’s Columbia Day Care Center, Power Packs Project, and the Columbia Public Library. Residents’ Council officers include president Carolyn Livingston, vice president Bob Herr, and financial secretary Mary Miller. The Residents’ Council meets once a month, hosts social events See Fall Fest pg 4

The National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors Inc. (NAWCC) has named Lancaster County resident Clayton Tongate its Volunteer of the Year for his contribution of time to the Fortunat Mueller-Maerki Library and Research Center and the NAWCC National Watch and Clock Museum building and grounds. Tongate has volunteered many hours in the Library and Museum grounds over the past year as a volunteer member of the library staff, conducting research for reference questions, lending a hand in circulation, and spearheading the effort to clear the basement shelves to prepare for the installation of the new archival rolling shelves, according to library and archives supervisor Sara Butler-Tongate. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the NAWCC National Watch and Clock Museum and the Fortunat Mueller-Maerki Library and Research Center. Dozens of volunteers donate thousands of hours, contributing significantly to the achievement of the NAWCC’s mission. The volunteers provide much of the manpower needed for daily operations, programs, special projects, and events. From event planning to education, and exhibit construction to archival research, volunteers get involved at various levels that fit the individuals’ time and commitment availability. To volunteer, readers may call Abby Krouse at 717-684-8261, ext. 234, to request an application. The application is also available at www.museumof time.org. To put a new spin on Ernie the Muppet’s classic song, “Rubber Duckie, you’re the one, who makes fundraising so much fun. Indeed, for three decades, Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center has centered its biggest fundraiser around the floating bath toys. Schreiber supporters may purchase tickets for the 30th annual Rubber Duckie Race, which will be held as part of a Rubber Duckie Festival on Sunday, Sept. 9, in Lancaster County Central Park, 1050 Rockford Road, Lancaster. Each ticket corresponds with either one of 20,000 yellow racing ducks or one of 5,000 blue racing ducks that will be dropped into the Conestoga River at 5 p.m. Among the yellow ducks, the first 50 across the finish line will win prizes for people holding those tickets. The speediest yellow duck will win its ticketholder a $1,000 Visa gift card. For blue ducks, the first 10 finishers will win one of the higher-value prizes, including a Weber grill, a flat-screen TV, and a mountain bike. For each ticket purchase, supporters will receive a souvenir duckie. This year’s theme of a Schreiber Animal Kingdom includes more than a dozen different animal ducks, ranging from cows and tigers to cats and yaks. Each ticket for a blue duck comes with a limited-edition dinosaur duck. In honor of the 30th anniversary, retired racing ducks may also be purchased as supplies last. Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, founded by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo, is a nonprofit micro-sanctuary created to advocate for farm animals. “We have a few acres, and we have a few ambassadors for each species,” explained Turzi. “We rescue animals, and we hold public events where humans can interact with the animals and hear their stories.” Turzi noted that the animals at the farm were rescued from abusive or neglectful situations, but they are not available for adoption. She listed two types of chickens, sheep, dairy cows, pygmy goats, a turkey, and several ducks that now live permanently at the sanctuary. A celebration of the 10th anniversary of Daniel’s Den Playground will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 4 p.m. in the Manor Church Community Park, which is located next to Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster. The event will include complimentary cake and ice cream as well as plenty of time to play. The vision for a playground accessible to children of all abilities was introduced by church member Denise Haldeman in late 2006. Haldeman’s young son, Daniel, used a wheelchair, and she wanted to ensure that he and other children like him would have an inclusive place to play. After more than a year of fundraising and planning, Build Week took place in April 2008, and the playground officially opened in September 2008. “Witnessing God’s hand during Build Week and also seeing how He provided people to financially support the completion of the playground (are my favorite memories of the project),” Haldeman reflected. Daniel’s Den is open to the public from dawn to dusk yearround. The playground was built with six guiding principles. It was designed to be a place where all children could play and learn together in order to foster a new generation of acceptance. The playground was to be community-built and community-supported, highly utilized, and fully accessible. It was constructed of environmentally conscious materials. Ultimately, the design for
Daniel’s Den was highly customized in order to inspire more creative play. “Children with more challenging play areas develop great cognitive skills,” related executive pastor Bryan Gerlach. “(Daniel’s Den) affords greater opportunities for children of all abilities.” In addition to Daniel’s Den, Manor Church Community Park includes a half-mile walking trail and sports fields. Manor Church owns and maintains the park and playground to bless the surrounding region. Haldeman noted that the blessings from the playground have exceeded her expectations. “Before it was built, I really never thought about families, parents, and children coming to know Christ through the playground, but that’s exactly what has happened, and knowing I could be a part of that gives me wonderful satisfaction,” she said. Everyone is welcome to attend the celebration, and registration is not required. In the event of light rain, the festivities will take place in a pavilion on the grounds. The event will be canceled if there is extreme weather. For more information, readers may visit www.manorchurch.org or call the church at 717-2853138. Pictured on front: Children of all ages and abilities have enjoyed Daniel’s Den Playground in the decade since it was built next to Manor Church in Manor Township. A celebration of the 10th anniversary will be held at the playground on Sept. 9.

the race. “The museum will open at 8 a.m., and runners receive coupons for children,” said Connolly, who explained that children may enjoy the museum for free with a paying adult. The coupons give a spouse, grandparent, or family friend a chance to enjoy the museum with a child or children while one or both parents run the course. Funds raised by the races will benefit educational programming and exhibits of Hands-on House, a
museum for children that first opened in 1987 in a Victorian house located across the street from its present location. In February of 2000, the museum moved to 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, and just about doubled its floor space. Hands-on House is a nonprofit organization that exists to use play to create landmark experiences for children ages 2 to 10. Julia Connolly, executive director of Hands-on House, has great appreciation for the beauty of the challenging course that Hands-on House Half Marathon runners enjoy. While the half marathon is known for its challenging hills, Connolly delights in the bucolic scenery the run offers. “It’s a beautiful course with farms, trees, and a covered bridge,” she said. “It truly captures Lancaster’s character.” The 15th annual Hands-on House Half Marathon, which also offers 10K and 5K courses, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, beginning at 8 a.m. All three runs will begin and end at Hands-on House, 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The 10K utilizes part of the halfmarathon course, and the 5K winds through a local neighborhood. Strollers are permitted in the 5 and 10K runs, but pets are not allowed for safety reasons. Connolly noted that water stops and comfort stations will be available along the routes and that bagels and apples will be offered to runners at the end of the race. Each run will have its own start, and all runners will be chip-timed. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female halfmarathon runners, and all halfmarathoners will receive medals.
Prizes will also be given to the top three males and females in a number of age groups for the half marathon and to the top five males and females for the 5K and 10K courses. According to Connolly, race organizers have set a goal of attracting 800 to 1,000 participants this year. At its peak, more than 1,000 runners took part in the event. Registration opened earlier this year to give more runners a chance to sign up. Runners may register at www.handsonhouse.org/run/ or by searching for “Hands-on House Half Marathon, 10K & 5K 2018” at www.active.com. Half-marathon runners must register prior to race day, and online registration will end on Thursday, Sept. 27. Those wishing to participate in the 5K or 10K races may register ahead of time or on the day of the event beginning at 6:30 a.m. Packet pickup will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at Hands-on House and from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the race. Free longsleeved tech shirts are guaranteed for runners who preregister for the events. While the Hands-on House race courses spotlight the hallmarks of Lancaster County scenery, the event also offers a unique opportunity for children and non-runners to enjoy the museum during

The Hiestands donated the building and established the Marietta Community House Corporation for the “promotion of the spiritual, social, and physical welfare of men, women, and children,” according to https://mariettacommunityhouse.org. Since then, the Community House property has served as a meetingplace for numerous organizations; a well-baby clinic and soup kitchen during the
Great Depression; a center for weightlifters and volleyball and basketball teams; and a roller skating rink, as well as housing theater productions and social dances. During floods in 1936 and 1972, it was the site of the Red Cross Disaster Relief Headquarters. Today it is a polling site for local elections and is available for service organizations to rent free of charge. The property is also available for weddings and special events for a fee. Katherine Leaman has been involved with the Marietta Community House for more than 10 years, and she said it all started with a love story. “I went on the Marietta Candlelight Tour and then to an afterparty at my now-husband’s home,” recalled Leaman. The pair hit it off, dated, and were married within a year - and have been committed to each other and to investing in the town of Marietta ever since. In April, the Marietta Community House welcomed Leaman as the new president at its annual board of directors meeting. Leaman served on the board for more than 10 years, most recently as vice president, and she praised former president Karen Sullivan for her successful tenure and ongoing dedication to the Marietta Community House. “I’ve watched it transform under Karen’s leadership,” said Leaman, noting that Sullivan spearheaded efforts that have made the Marietta Community House into something that everyone can be proud of. “We’ve gotten beyond fixing the building and are seeing some progress,” Leaman remarked. “I’m thrilled (for the Community House) to be a good neighbor. I think everyone who’s ever lived in Marietta becomes passionate about the community. It’s a small borough, and it just cares.” As a board member, Leaman served on various committees,
including the annual tea and progressive dinner committee and the garden tour team. She headed the annual fundraising auction committee, which benefits both the Marietta Community House and the Susquehanna Stage Company, a community theater group that meets in the gymnasium building located at the rear of the Marietta Community House property at 264 W. Market St., Marietta. Leaman is excited to announce that the Community House is currently selling tickets for about a special Irish-themed drawing. Interested individuals may purchase tickets to be entered to win a vacation for two in Ireland. The winner may select from one of three vacation options tailored to their preferences: Game of Thrones Journey, Irish Adventure, or Golf in Ireland. Each trip will include a six-night stay starting in Dublin. A limited number of tickets are available for a set fee from any of the Community House board members or by visiting https://mariettacommunity house.org. The winner will be announced at “An Emerald Evening,” the Community House’s second annual dinner and auction on Saturday, Sept. 22, at McCleary’s Public House, 130 W. Front St., Marietta. Tickets for that event are also available to purchase at the website. Originally built as a private residence in 1875, the Community House was purchased by Mr. and
