Iron foundries played a vital role in establishing the riverfront region in and around Columbia and Marietta, and the 14th annual Pig Iron Fest and Car Show on Sunday, Sept. 30, will serve as a celebration of the region’s industrial heyday. “It really captures the spirit of Marietta and the area,” said
organizer Marcus Snow. “There is a historic focus on the iron foundries and the role they played in building the region, but we also have fun with great show cars, family-oriented events, food, and live music. It is a great day for community, and everyone helps out.” The free community event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Furnace Road Day Use Area and the

All The Bells And Whistles
Each year the dedicated residents who organize Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days decide on a different agricultural process or antiquity to feature at the two-day event, and this year’s theme was chosen at the suggestion of numerous individuals. Bells, whistles, and poultry items - new and old, of all shapes and sizes - will be on display for folks to view and learn a bit of history. Organizer Darl Williams has amassed quite a collection of bells and whistles, including several worn by horses pulling the famous Conestoga wagons. See Old-Fashioned Field Days pg 3
The organizers of Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days, including (from left) Darl Williams, Earl Fuhrman, Mitch Bernhard, Ron Bernhard, Tonya Bernhard, and Kevin Baker, invite the community to enjoy the free two-day festival celebrating agricultural history on Sept. 15 and 16 at Conoy Park in Bainbridge.
As summer winds down and the weather cools off, that means that soup will be making its way back onto the dinner table. Perhaps even better news for soup fans is that an opportunity to let someone else do the stirring and simmering is on the horizon as St. James Lutheran Church in Columbia prepares for its annual autumn soup sale. This year’s soup and bake sale is set to take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the church, 655 S. 10th St., Columbia. Folks are invited to preorder quarts of soup by calling 717-684-5135 or 717-684-2096. The varieties of soup on the menu will be cream of crab, chicken corn, ham

During the summers of 1988 to 1992, Millersville University (MU) students, led by Dr. June Evans, trudged down the old railroad bed to the Henry Clay Iron Furnace. The railroad bed has now been transformed into the Lancaster County Northwest River Trail. The students carried shovels, trowels, screens, and notebooks to the site, which was the second of eight anthracite coal fired hot blast iron furnaces in the area. The furnaces had lined the shores of the Susquehanna River between Marietta and Columbia from 1843 to 1931. Hundreds of hikers and bikers now pass by the remains of one of those furnaces every week. During the class excavations at the furnace site, the teams uncovered, classified, marked, and preserved more than 50,000 artifacts. The artifacts are now housed at the Musselman/Vesta See Exhibit Dedication pg 2

The tavern house, which was used as the manager’s house for the furnace, was included in MU students’ excavation. Around 1865, John Q. Denney purchased the property. Denney was one of the men involved in the burning of the Columbia/Wrightsville covered bridge during the Civil War. The furnace was later under the management of several
owners until Clement Brooke Grubb purchased it in 1875. Grubb was the greatgrandson of Peter Grubb, who discovered the Cornwall ore deposit. In 1876, pig iron worth $81,871 was cast. The furnace ceased operation in 1889. Iron Furnace center, 26 Furnace Road, Marietta. The Sanborn Insurance map was used locate the buildings in the furnace complex, the manager’s house, and the tenement housing. The field study team drew grids on many of the buildings before starting the survey. The grids were used to mark the location of an object where it was found and note what was near the artifact, which helps archaeologists estimate a date for the item. Many of the artifacts are now displayed in the Dr. June Evans Henry Clay Exhibit, which is located in the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center. The exhibit is housed in a historic cabinet from the former Billmeyer Jewelry Store that operated in Marietta. The cabinet was restored by local resident Lillian Hill during the past winter. The exhibit showcases dishes, bottles, bowls, a steel toy stove, and many other items that were uncovered at the site. The exhibit also includes photos of the excavation, quadrant maps, and the Sanborn Insurance map that details the buildings of the Henry Clay Furnace complex. The Dr. June Evans Henry Clay Exhibit dedication will take place during the annual Pig Iron Fest which is planned for Sunday, Sept. 30. The dedication will be

include the annual benefit auction, which will begin at 2 p.m. Auction lots are made up of a variety of donated items, including wood carvings, farm toys, baked goods, and other homemade goods. Individuals may donate items for the auction right up until the start of bidding. All proceeds will support the event and help to keep it free to the public. A tractor parade will make its way through the event grounds at 11 a.m. on Sept. 15 and at noon on Sept. 16. Live musical entertainment will be provided on both days, including performances by bluegrass band Iron Ridge on Sept. 15. A church service will be held at 9 a.m. on Sept. 16, led by pastors from the churches in Conoy Township. The two-day festival began as a way to celebrate the heritage of the area, and it remains a community event to its core. Churches and civic organizations such as the Bainbridge Fire Company, Bainbridge Lions Club, and Elizabethtown Jaycees prepare and serve a variety of food and beverages for attendees to purchase. Local Boy Scouts assist with parking, trash, and crowd management. For more information, readers may find “Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days” on Facebook or call 717-572-6144.

In those days, bells announced that a team of horses was coming and signaled to people and animals alike to get out of the way. “Anyone can bring stuff that day to display, and there’s already been a fair amount of people who said they’re bringing these items,” said organizer Ron Bernhard, adding that train whistles and steam whistles will also be among the selection. Poultry-related items can encompass anything from old feeders to signs, memorabilia, and more. “You’d be surprised what shows up,” Bernhard commented. The 21st annual Susquehanna OldFashioned Field Days event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16, at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. Admission and parking will be free. Antique tractors, hit-and-miss engines, model engines, and other items will round out the machinery exhibits. Revolutionary War and Civil War re-enactors will be set up on both days. A variety of live demonstrations will include rope making, apple cider pressing, shingle sawing, and blacksmithing. Craft vendors will also be on-site offering a variety of handmade goods for sale. Organizers encourage families to take advantage of all that the festival has to offer for children. Moms in Prayer International groups in Lancaster County are preparing for their weekly meetings during the school year. Founded in 1984, Moms in Prayer is a worldwide organization of mothers and other women in more than 140 countries around the world who gather to pray together for children of all ages and for schools. During each one-hour meeting, attendees take part in four types of prayer: praise, silent confession,
thanksgiving, and intercession. In addition to traditional/one-school groups, there are a variety of other groups, including church-based, homeschool, preschool, special-needs, military, and college groups, as well as a growing prison ministry. Moms in Prayer has also announced Bless Our School Sunday, which will take place on Sunday, Sept. 16. On that date, church members around the world will pray and is a regular performer at local open mic nights in Marietta. Rinard is returning to Pig Iron Fest and plays a mix of classic ’70s and ’80s tunes along with new country and indie music. Food vendors will offer chicken sandwiches and chicken tenders, hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue sandwiches, french fries, soft pretzels, and beverages. Children can take a hayride, decorate pumpkins, and enjoy special music, games, and crafts for their age set in the Kids’ Zone. History tours of the furnace ruins will be offered throughout the day, and a dedication ceremony for the Dr. June Evans Henry Clay Exhibit at the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center will take place at 1 p.m. The exhibit features items that were uncovered at the Henry Clay Furnace site, where Evans led Millersville University students on archaeological digs from 1988 to 1992. The site was one of eight anthracite coal-fired hot blast iron furnaces in the Marietta and Columbia region between 1843 and 1931.

Church member and resident chef Peg Shenberger, along with a dedicated crew of volunteers from the church, will once again prepare hundreds of quarts of soup for the community. Cream of crab and chicken corn are perennial bestsellers, but Shenberger said that all of the varieties offered have devoted fans who would miss their favorite if it were to be removed from the selection. Homemade baked goods are equally popular, and event organizers are confident that this year’s treats will not disappoint. The baked goods selection will include fudge, seafoam, taffy, cakes, pies, soft pretzels, whoopie pies, and several other items yet to be determined. Last year the soup and bake
sale raised approximately $2,000. All proceeds from the event will go into the St. James Lutheran Church Outreach Fund, which makes contributions to local organizations such as the Columbia Food Bank and the Columbia Borough Fire Department. The members of the outreach committee planning the event include Shenberger, pastor Mark Kopp and his wife, Keri, along with Betty Albin, Jean Fry, Cathy Miller, Lynn Morrison, Sharon Pannell, and Vicky Waugh. St. James Lutheran Church offers Sunday services at 10:30 a.m., with Sunday school at 9:15 a.m. Child care is available during the services. To learn more about the church and its happenings, readers may visit https://stjamescolumbiapa.com.

Golfers Show Promise Despite Inexperience by Eric Pyles
Golf is a game of numbers like how many shots per hole, how many strokes under par for your round and in the high school version, how many players on your team and how long have they been playing. For the Eastern York High School team, the answers to the last two questions are heavily influencing the results of the first two questions. First year skipper Brett Heiser kicked off his inaugural season with just four players and only three of them, Nate Hoyer, Dyson Renn and
Jon Minneman, brought any prior varsity experience into this season. That led to a 0-6 showing in the season’s first match on August 20th at Mountain View Golf Club. Hoyer’s round of 89 claimed top spot for the Golden Knights. Heiser was able to pick up a few more players before the season’s second match, meaning Eastern York was able to take part in the team competition on August 30th but it was not enough to shake a win out of Bon Air Country Club. The mix of inexperienced newcomers and a trio of veterans, led by Hoyer’s sixth place round Eastern’s Dyson Renn, left, and Jon Minneman both posted rounds of 102 to finish tied for second on the Golden Knights’ scorecard at last Tuesday’s YAIAA Division II match at Pleasant Valley.
team disadvantage but the guys are having fun and we have goals of having six guys competing midway through the season and hopefully earning some league points finishing ahead of a few other teams.” The golf team may have gotten a jump on their season compared to the rest of Eastern York’s fall sports teams but it was worth the wait for girls’ volleyball team. The Lady Golden Knights used wins of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-23 to roll past New Oxford on September 4th, beginning their 2018 season with a 1-0 mark. The season opener wasn’t all sunshine and roses for head coach Josh Korb’s squad which was illustrated in a 25-18 game one loss that Korb chalked up to “first game jitters.” As

York’s other first half score while Cassidy Arnold joined Campbell in second half scoring. The season did not start in the same manor for the girls’ soccer team. The Lady Golden Knights traveled to Gettysburg for their season opener on September 4th and came home on the wrong side of a 12-0 final. Savannah Yingst got the start in goal for Eastern and finished with 12 saves but she was no match for the Gettysburg trio of Grace Floreck (two goals, four assists), Lora Bertram (three goals, one assist) and Maddy Gaydon (two goals) who led the Lady Warriors to the win. The early goings for the boys’ soccer team have put the Golden Knights on both sides of shutout finals. Eastern York opened the season on September 1st by topping LancasterLebanon League’s ELCO Raiders by a 1-0 count before dropping a 4-0 final to YAIAA Division II foe Gettysburg three days later. Nate Robbins netted the game winner against ELCO with just under six minutes remaining in the contest while the work of Brady Bixler (six saves) and the Golden Knights defense kept the home team at bay. of 84, posted a score of 476, a mere seven strokes behind Gettysburg. While it was still a last place finish the Golden Knights showed some promise. That promise produced some results on September 4th when Eastern traveled to Pleasant Valley Golf Club. The Golden Knights knocked off Gettysburg 392-420 to earn their first win of the 2018 season behind Hoyer’s round of 84. Renn and Minneman tacked on rounds of 102 while newcomers Dillon Mealey (106) and Nolan Reichard (110) finished up Eastern’s top five. “The team is made up of seven Nate Hoyer turned in a round of 82 to lead the Eastern scorecard guys and have come a long way in the and finish second overall in the individual standings at last Tues- first few weeks,” said Heiser. “Having day’s YAIAA Division II match at Pleasant Valley. four brand new golfers puts us at a
the remaining three games can attest those jitters were gone after the opening game. “After we found our rhythm in the second set, it was game on,” said Korb. Katie Lehman directed the offense to the tune of 27 assists and played a big part of Eastern’s defense with 12 digs. Korb mentioned that type of defense setting up the offense, “it just wears down the other team’s offense and in-turn gives our hitters a chance to attack the ball.” Sarah Moore helped Lehman back up that point with a 15 kill and four dig effort while Olivia Koicuba (five digs, three aces, one kill) and Elisa Sprenkle (three blocks, two kills) provided additional back-up. Count the field hockey team as another club where the 2018 season was worth the wait. The Lady Golden Knights kicked off their regular season slate by clobbering Hanover, 4-2. Eastern York controlled throughout the contest leading to a 15-6 edge in shots and a 13-4 advantage in corner attempts. With the action predominantly taking place at the other end of the field, Kelsey Felix needed just five saves to pick up the win. Lily Campbell was at the forefront of the attack, finishing with a goal and an assist to Morgan Arnold that opened the scoring. Addison Malone nabbed Eastern

Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D Prescription Drug Plans are allowed to change the amounts of their plan deductibles, co-pays, and total out-of-pocket expenses, as well as their drug formularies each year, which is why Medicare strongly recommends that beneficiaries compare their current plan against other plans available for 2019. The information sessions are for people already on Medicare and enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan. Space is limited and registration is required. To register, readers may call Lancaster County Office of Aging at 717-299-7979, 800-801-3070, or by email aging@co.lancaster.pa.us.
