Hoop Shoot promotes friendly competition

When she competed at the state Elks Hoop Shoot contest last year, Lily Porreca was nervous. She had done well at the local event in Columbia, where she won first place in the 8- and 9-year-old age group, and she had won her division at districts as well.

She knew what she had to do: get on the court and push past the nerves. “After I took a few shots, I felt

Books for a bargain

When you browse the tables at the Kreutz Creek Library fall book sale, you’ll find a mix of genres and a huge selection.

“By our rough count, we had about 18,000 books last spring,” said Ed Ritter, book sale chair, describing the library’s spring sale. He expects as many at the fall sale, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, in the Hellam Township Public Works Building, 44 Walnut Springs Road, York.

Along with fiction and nonfiction books for adults and children, the sale will feature puzzles and jewelry. “We sold a lot of puzzles in the spring,” said Jennifer Johnson, library manager. “They became popular during the pandemic, and they seem to be even more popular since.”

Books will be sorted by category, with certain authors highlighted. “We take a dozen or so of our top authors and put their books together in cartons,” Ritter said, noting that

The Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 will hold the annual Elks Hoop Shoot program on Sunday, Nov. 5, in the gym at Park Elementary School, 50 S. Sixth St., Columbia. authors might include Janet Evanovich and James Patterson. “That way, they’re all in one place.” Johnson said this is especially appreciated by collectors of specific authors. “If you’re looking for a specific title, this is really handy,” she stated. “It makes it easy to find what you’re looking for.”

The book sale will also feature

Johnson agreed, adding that the one-price sale doesn’t cut into the inventory. “You might think by the end of Saturday there are no good books left,” she shared, “but that’s not the case. What is a good book to you might not be to someone else, and there are good books to be had.”

The book sale is organized by the Friends of the Kreutz Creek Library, and the sale will help fund operation of the library. “The money raised by the Friends helps with the costs to keep the library open,” Johnson said. “The Friends also support the library with

As a Boy Scout, Derick Kinser is concerned about his community and the world around him. Looking for an idea for his Eagle project, Derick struck up a conversation with Columbia Mayor Leo Lutz.

Lutz suggested that Derick consider raising awareness of how storm drain runoff affects the Susquehanna River. Inspired by the idea, Derick gathered a team and got to work.

“As a group, we refinished and repainted almost 100 of the storm drains in the bottom end of Columbia Borough, hoping for them to stand out and make people

think twice about dumping a harmful substance into our rain runoffs that lead into the river,” he said.

He started planning his project in mid-July and spent two workdays in late August with two different crews. On the first day, he had help from Eugene Schmitt, Jarret Schmitt, his brothers Shane and Travis Kinser, and Becky Wright. On the second day, Travis and Shane returned to help, along with Derick’s father, Dave Kinser. Derick also worked with Columbia Borough, specifically with Jake Graham, who is the public works manager.

Not only did the group clean up the storm drains, but they also created See Storm drains pg 4

Celebrating Marietta with history, cars and dogs

Marietta played a major role in the pig iron industry, and that history will be spotlighted at the 18th annual Pig Iron Fest. This year’s festival, to be held on Saturday, Sept. 30, will offer three events in one, combining the Pig Iron Fest with a car show and Dog Fest. The main location of the festivities will be Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“For the Pig Iron Fest, we wanted to get as many local restoration people involved as we could,” said Gary Schatz, a member of the Donegal Rotary Club, which is organizing the event. “We have people who have a lot of experience with the history of this area.” Lenny Droege will conduct walking tours of the Marietta Iron Furnace Park. “We’ll be running a shuttle from the church to the furnace area,” Schatz noted.

Stay

Droege will lead visitors through the Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center, which tells the history of the timber, iron and railroad industries in the area through displays, artifacts and an HO-scale diorama of the iron furnace. Participants will also be able to visit the Donegal and Marietta No. 1 furnaces, weather permitting. The shuttle will take visitors by the historical homes of Henry Watts and Henry Musselman, both iron masters of the mid-1800s, before returning to the church grounds.

The car show portion of the event is open to all makes and models of cars and motorcycles. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the day of the event, and trophies will be awarded at approximately 2 p.m.

Two food trucks - Spud Muffin and Kurtz Concessions - will be on-site for the festival, Tim Rinard will provide musical entertainment throughout the day and Steve

Bailey will set up a photo display. A Kids Zone will feature pumpkin painting, hayrides and other activities.

“We’ll have Miss Jan from the Milanof-Schock Library there, and she’ll be doing story readings,” Schatz said. “The kids’ activities are always very popular.”

The Dog Fest portion of the festivities will highlight furry friends, with ribbons awarded to every registered dog. “Dog Fest is a fundraiser for local rescues,” Schatz shared, explaining that the second annual event was rained out in

May, so organizers decided to add it to the Pig Iron festivities. Pet-focused vendors will be on hand, and an area will be set up for people who would like to show off any special tricks or skills their dog can do. Local K-9 officer Sarge will also offer demonstrations.

Attendees are asked to bring a food item for the Community Care Center, a ministry of Community Bible Church, and proceeds from the festivities will benefit maintenance of the Musselman-Vesta building, local fire and police departments

Program to offer library cards to first-graders

Students complete Dyslexia Center program

Young students are invited to join York County Libraries’ annual Grade One At the Library (GOAL) program, which offers a free library card to every first-grade student in York County. Students can sign up through their classroom teachers during the first few weeks of school.

After students register for the GOAL program and receive their library cards,

they are encouraged to visit any of York County Libraries’ 13 locations to check out books and pick up participation prizes. One of the top prizes is a copy of “Who Made This Mess?” written by featured GOAL author Laura Gehl. In addition to getting a copy of the book, participants may meet Gehl and have the author autograph their books during the GOAL Celebration in November.

Gehl is the sixth nationally known children’s author selected to encourage York County first-grade students to read. The previous GOAL authors are Tedd Arnold, Will Hillenbrand, Peter Catalanotto, Lindsay Barrett George, and Anthony D. Fredericks. Each author is involved for three years and visits York to inspire children to read and learn.

Gehl is the author of more than 40 books for young readers, including “I Got a Chicken for My Birthday,” “My Pillow Keeps Moving!” and “Apple and Magnolia.” Her books have been praised by the Junior Library Guild and selected for the Kirkus Best Picture Books of the Year, the Indie Next List, CCBC Choices, and ALA Notable. Some of Gehl’s books have been a Booklist Editors’ Choice, an Amazon Editors’ Choice, a Charlotte Zolotow Highly Commended Title, an ILA Honor Book, and a winner of the Mathical Award.

The GOAL program has given library cards to 42,273 students since the program’s inception in 2008. PeoplesBank has been the presenting sponsor since the program’s start.

The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster held its 19th annual Celebration of Achievement on July 30 at the Lancaster Masonic Center. Of the nine children graduating from the program, six were in attendance. The graduates are Kaitlin Cruz, Bailie DeMaria, Kayliannah Gonzalez, Iris Kowal, Letteria Olsen, Nalani Reese, Maya Roeser, Delaney Smith, and Seth Wickenheiser.

About 250 children have received services through the center since its opening in 2002.

Heather Brown, director of the center, presented each graduate with a signed certificate, a personalized booklet detailing the student’s reading journey, a collection of thank-you speeches from fellow graduates, and an autograph bear, the mascot adopted by the Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc., as a keepsake. Students presented words of thanks to their tutors and the Board of Governors for the services they received. The Lancaster Lodge of Perfection presented a $6,000 check from the fifth annual Bowling Night Fundraiser. The Celebration of Achievement concluded with an ice cream social.

The center, sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, is one of six such centers in Pennsylvania providing tutoring at no charge to children from elementary through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible

regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The Orton-Gillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language.

Flu vaccinations now available at Giant, Martin’s

The Giant Company has announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 133 Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.

Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors. Most insurance plans cover flu shots with no copay, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing pharmacists, subject to state regulations. No appointment is needed.

Through Saturday, Oct. 7,

select Giant and Martin’s pharmacies will once again offer drive-up flu vaccinations where patients can pull into a spot in the designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their car. Store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations as well as the dates and times will soon be available at www .giantfoodstores.com/pages/ tgc-vaccines or www.martins foods.com/pages/tgc-vaccines.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

(CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots by the end of October for everyone age 6 months and older, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over 65, children

under age 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy, visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com or download the free Giant or Martin’s pharmacy app.
