Walk Aims To Raise Epilepsy Awareness, Research Funds By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Aaron Wingert of Lancaster was 30 when he experienced his first epileptic seizure. “Everything is normal in your life, and then you wake up in the back of an ambulance,” he said. Nineteen-year-old Nadine DeBalko of Adamstown was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 12 and had to change her perceptions about the disorder. “I thought it was just older people who had it,” she recalled. Lancaster resident Kerri Michnya never remembers a time without seizures. She was diagnosed at age 10. Now age 42, she has been seizure-free for 11 years. Both Michnya’s and Wingert’s seizures are well-controlled by medication. DeBalko opted to have surgery two years ago to remove her amygdala, the area of the brain where
her seizures were centralized. She considers herself cured. “Epilepsy is a spectrum disorder,” Michnya explained. “It looks different and treatments are different in each person.” Navigating life with epilepsy is challenging, the trio agreed. “There didn’t seem to be a lot of resources available,” Wingert said. “I saw my neurologist every six months, but they couldn’t help with the emotional aspect.” Thankfully, he said, he discovered the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania (EFEPA) through social media a few years ago. Epilepsy has two sets of specific challenges, Wingert suggested: the seizures themselves and the side effects of the treatments available. The uncertainty of the disorder, the restriction from driving and from certain occupations, and the financial costs of medication, See Walk To End Epilepsy pg 4

a group of people of color and of African descent gathered regularly for religious services in a pasture area of Marietta called Heisey Woods, which became known as Cassel’s Park in later years. Bethel AME Church was established, and documents show that in October 1833, land was acquired from Christian and Margaret Hershey in the 100 block of Green Lane - now Fairview Avenue. The property was described as including a stable, orchard and a carriage house. The congregation remodeled the carriage house and worshiped there until it was destroyed by a fire in 1861, according to documentation in the Pioneer Fire Company minutes book. After many hardships
and prayers, a new church building was erected on the same site. In 1969, that building was torn down to make way for a more modern structure, which was made possible through the generosity of Mrs. Anthony L. Resch. The new church building was dedicated on April 26, 1970. The cemetery beside the church is the resting place of several black Civil War veterans, including Wesley Armstrong, who fought with the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which was featured in the film “Glory. Weekly Sunday activities at Marietta Bethel AME include Sunday school at 10 a.m., followed by a worship service at 11 a.m. All are welcome. Walk To End Epilepsy from pg 1 and the financial costs of medication, ambulance rides, and hospital stays can create a lot of stress. For people like Wingert who have idiopathic seizures, stress can trigger more seizures. Thus, having a community of understanding people is hugely important. Michnya is EFEPA’s Lancaster County resource coordinator. She coordinates a support group and other programs to ensure people with epilepsy have the encouragement, guidance, and information they need. “My job allows me to give back,” she said. “I feel really fortunate.” Michnya is also helping to coordinate Lancaster County’s inaugural Walk to End Epilepsy along with Wingert and DeBalko, who are both volunteers. Wingert had attended a version of the event in Philadelphia and was so impressed by the camaraderie and sense of community among the participants that he suggested that it be brought to Lancaster. “It was more than time to have it here,” Michnya said. “It sends a great message: You are not alone in your diagnosis.” The Walk to End Epilepsy will be held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Oct. 12. Registration will open at 9 a.m., the walk will begin at 10 a.m., and the event will conclude by noon. Both DeBalko and Wingert are slated to speak during the opening

ceremony. The walk will mimic Philadelphia’s event by taking place inside the stadium. “It really brings the community together,” Wingert said of keeping the event contained. The event is family focused, so there will be activities for children throughout the morning. These include entertainment by a magician, face painting, balloon sculpting, and play on an inflatable slide. Refreshments will be provided at the event, and an afterparty will be held at Yorgos, 66 N. Queen St., Lancaster. There will also be opportunities to win gift cards and other prizes at the walk. Additionally, vendors will be on hand to offer information about pharmaceuticals, CBD, and more. The Walk to End Epilepsy will be held rain or shine. There is no charge to attend the event, but fundraising is encouraged. A minimum fundraising amount has been set to receive an event T-shirt. Proceeds from the walk will fund research into treatments and cures as well as resources for people with the disorder. Event sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information or to register for the walk, readers may visit w w w. E p i l e p s y Wa l k P A . o r g . Online registration will close on Friday, Oct. 11. Individuals may also register at the event. Michnya may be reached for questions at kmichnya@efepa.org or 717-449-1872.

Valentine’s Day is often an occasion for happy changes in life: first confessions of love, confirmations of continued affection, and even proposals of marriage. For Willow Street residents Baron and Rene Geib, who have been married for 27 years, Valentine’s Day 2017 brought them into the section of their vows that no one wants to experience: the commitment to love in sickness as well as in health. The ordeal began with what looked like a blood blister on Baron’s arm. Heeding Rene’s urging, Baron had the spot biopsied, and on Valentine’s Day 2017, he received the diagnosis of cancer. A week later, he received confirmation that he had melanoma. While melanoma is often called skin cancer, the disease often reaches below the skin. After surgery to remove the tumor and some of his lymph nodes, Baron was told he had stage 3 cancer. Unfortunately, the surgery did not stop the progression of the disease. All of Baron’s lymph nodes had to be removed, and, in four days, a tumor grew from a pea size to a 4-inch diameter around his brachial artery and brachial nerve, causing complications in his arm. By the time Valentine’s Day rolled around again in
2018, the cancer had entered stage 4. Baron has undergone radiation and immunotherapy treatment, but the onset of pneumonitis caused the treatment to halt. He is now receiving only pain management as the primary course of care, Rene reported. If the pneumonitis decreases, immunotherapy may be restarted. “We are in limbo but have accepted whatever God has in store for our lives,” Rene said. “We take one day at a time, trusting God for each moment. We have decided to take what we have, enjoy it, learn from it, share it with others, and just live the best we can. We can’t complain: God has been with us each step of the way.” The Geibs are hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Baron has been a nurse for many years but has been unable to work since his disease progressed. Rene became a registered nurse this year, and she will begin working in October. That will enable her to support herself and the three grandchildren for whom they are the primary caregivers. To relieve some of the stress caused by medical bills and living expenses, as well as to help the Geibs to move into a house with a first-floor master suite, friends have

Field Hockey Teams from pg 1 knew Buckius say she showed compassion to all her patients and patience to her family, and she was always kind. Buckius was a Girl Scout and later became a Scout leader. An outdoors enthusiast, she spent many summers teaching young girls how to enjoy and take care of nature. Buckius loved hiking, kayaking and traveling to new places, as well as sports, including hockey, soccer, football and fencing. As part of their fundraising campaign, the Eastern York and

Take the Eastern York gridiron gang...the Golden Knights were rolling along at 2-1 while outscoring their opponents 121-94 after three weeks of the 2019 season. Malone, with help from Campbell, made it 2-0 just 2:07 into the second half while Arnold picked up goal number two and Campbell assist number three

The lone goal of the game came with 6:30 remaining in the opening half with Campbell setting up Malone. Felix needed six saves to earn the shutout this time around. See Eastern pg 10
The field hockey team got back to their winning ways on September 20th, erasing the sting of an overtime loss to Bermudian that snapped the Lady Golden Knights six-game winning streak. The 3-0 victory not only got Eastern York back to winning, the teams used the game as a fundraiser for the Heather Baker Foundation which helps support local families affected by cancer. McCleary Throws 476 Yards Against A-C

Columbia’s Dale Nell sets up to block the Dutchmen’s Steven Colledge during the Tide’s 70-43, Section Three loss at Annville-Cleona on September 20. by Sam Valentin
The Crimson Tide traveled to Annville Cleona to try to squash the Dutchmen’s homecoming festivities but that plan went awry very quickly. What if I told you Matt McCleary threw for 476 yards and four touchdowns? That would normally mean a win, but Friday September 20th was not a normal game at all as AnnvilleCleona ran away from the Tide by a score of 70-43. McCleary is only the tenth quarterback to throw for 400 yards or more in a single game since the L-L league formed in 1972. He also now owns the third most passing yards in a single
game in L-L history. The Tide ended the first quarter tied. The Dutchmen struck first but McCleary answered back with a 21 yard strike to Darnell Tucker for a 7-7 score. Midway through the second quarter that all changed. Annville-Cleona came alive quickly when they rushed in a long touchdown. Then a few plays later the Tide coughed up the football setting up another touchdown for the opposing team. The very next snap McCleary was picked off and it was taken back to the house. The tide drastically changed in 30 seconds as the score now read 28-7 with about seven minutes left in the half.

The lone bright spots for Columbia in the second quarter were two field goals by kicker Phillip Acosta. They entered halftime down 42-13 as they were outscored 35-6 in that second quarter. Coach Kyle realizes that mistakes have come back to hurt the Tide this year and this game was no different. His staff preaches playing all four quarters as a unit and to finish strong. The Tide got the message loud and clear in the second half, rebounding with 30 points. Michael Poole came up with an 80-yard reception from McCleary. Tucker hauled in another touchdown pass from McCleary. This
time a 27-yard pass was capped off with a successful two-point conversion as Demetrius Diaz-Ellis caught a short pass. McCleary also used his legs to find the end zone as he scampered for a 13-yard and a six yard score. Then he hooked up with his favorite target Ryan Redding for a 37-yard touchdown pass. Redding ended the night with 11 catches for 237 yards and a touchdown. Poole hauled three catches on the night for 151 yards, most of those yards coming on the 80 yarder he took to the house. Tucker caught three passes for 73 yards and found the end zone twice.
and right the ship. Columbia plays Ephrata on October 4 in an important league matchup that could have playoff implications. If they can get the tide rolling and get some help from the top of the table they could sneak into the playoffs as they are just one win away from jumping back into the middle of the pack in Section Three. On the year, McCleary has thrown 15 touchdowns with 1407 passing yards and is boasting a quarterback rating of 100. Redding has 570 yards on 37 catches totaling six scores. Poole has hauled in 14 catches for 275 yards and one score. Diaz- Ellis has 15 catches for 237 yards and found the end zone three times. Tucker has added 17 catches for 227 yards and two scores. Keegin Zink has four catches for 74 yards and one touchdown. TENNIS The tennis teams struggled continued as they dropped matches to Elco, a non- league match against Antietam, Octorara, Lancaster Mennonite, and another non-league showdown with West York. The girls did win two matches against Antietam and one match against Lancaster Mennonite. Against Antietam the girls won both their doubles as the tandem of Brooke Haldeman and Cleo Grove won 8-0 and the pair of Melanie CruzBernard and Merat Labib won 8-4. Grove was the lone bright spot against Lancaster Mennonite, winning in singles 4-6, 6-4, and 10-6. They wrap up their season against York Country Day and hope to finish on a high note. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL The girl’s volleyball team is still Photo by Cheri Sine Photo by Cheri Sine searching for their first win. Columbia ended the night with 489 yards of total offense, which McCleary accounted for the vast majority of. They did allow 503 yards to the Dutchmen but were stout thru the air only allowing a total of 96 total passing yards. Columbia fought to the finish. According to Kyle they knew the game would be tough but they are confident against any opponent they face. They hope to take that into their next game

We made a few mistakes early that cost us but played hard for the entire 80 minutes,” said head coach JJ Heiland of the 3-2 loss to KD on the 19th. Gavin Donnelly and Ethan Nikolaus did their best to help the Golden Knights keep pace with the Rams but it was not enough to pull out the win. Donnelly scored both Eastern York goals, splitting the work between the two halves while Nikolaus finished with eight saves in the loss. September 24th brought the Warriors of Gettysburg to town and unfortunately for Eastern York Alex Cole made the trip along with the rest of his Warrior teammates. Cole took part in all four Gettysburg goals, scoring three and assisting on the final tally, to propel the Warriors to the win. Donnelly broke-up the shutout with a second half score while Nikolaus turned away another eight shots in the loss. “Overall the boys are playing well. It’s easy to focus on what went wrong after a loss but instead we need focus on what went right,” said Heiland, “No team, player or coach is perfect, but to improve we must have a plan in place to fix our mistakes and prevent repeating them in future games.” GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team found the
Lebanon, Lititz Christian, and Octorara. They lost 25-13, 25-7 and 25-3 to Northern Lebanon. Mercy Gonzalez had two service aces and seven digs while Kamron Andrews added a solo block. Lititz Christian beat the Tide 25-10, 25-10, and 25-6 on Sept 23. Gonzalez again led the way with three kills and nine digs while Lillian Wickenheiser and Melina Mowrer both added a service ace. The girls dropped straight sets to Octorara as well but Andrews led the way with two kills and seven digs. Gonzalez served three aces. Amanda Torress added two assists. Totals for the year include Andrews with three kills, two service aces, 13 digs and one solo block. Gonzalez sits at ten kills, 14 service aces, and 61 digs, while Torres bumped her totals to two service aces, two assists and nine digs after a big individual week. Nine of those saves came in the September 19th loss to KD where Hailey Clayton secured the win for the Lady Rams with a first half goal. Head coach Christina Crumling called her squad’s game opposite Gettysburg on the 24th a “well played match” but Eastern was unable to translate that into a victory, instead falling by a 2-0 count. Crumling added, “We were defensively solid and applied a lot of offensive pressure,” but Gettysburg’s keeper tandem of Jenna Brasee and Lydia Floreck were up to the task of keeping the Lady Golden Knights off the scoreboard. CROSS COUNTRY The cross country team hosted their lone YAIAA meet of the season on September 24th, inviting Dallastown, Gettysburg and York Tech to Sam Lewis State park for a 3.1-mile race. The result was one win for both the boys and the girls with losses to Dallastown and Gettysburg offsetting that victory over York Tech. Tyrel Emig paced the boy’s side to the 20-41 win over Tech with an 11th place run. Anthony Roselli (18th - 20:18), Hailu Barrow (19th - 20:23) and Dellas Edmisten (20th - 20:30) all cracked the top 20 with Chase Curry and his 22nd place time of 20:36 rounding out Eastern’s top five. For the Lady Golden Knights, it was Abi Ferry and her 14th place time of 26:36 that propelled Eastern to the 15-50 win over the Lady Spartans. The remaining runners in the top five finished in pairs with Fiona Valore (27:43) and Emma Parvis (28:16) crossing back-to-back in 17th and 18th place while Kayley Druck (33:53) and Savannah Conley (34:19) did the same in 22nd and 23rd place. GOLF The golf team closed out their regular season on September 19th with a trip to Honey Run Golf Club where Dover played host. The Golden Knights were able to pick up one win on the day, topping Gettysburg 406415 but dropped their decisions against Susquehannock, KennardDale, West York, York Suburban and the host Eagles to finish the regular season 2-46. On the bright side, Dyson Renn played well enough to secure one of the 21 spots in the YAIAA Championship reserved for Division II players. The senior started golfing as a
