On Saturday, Oct. 30, a committee of volunteers will be scaring up some fun in Columbia’s Locust Street Park. They will be throwing a community Halloween party from 3 to 7 p.m. featuring fun for people of all ages, said Alison Liebgott, one of the organizers. “We’re trying to do something for the people in our local community that they don’t have to drive to,” she noted. “They can just walk to the park.”

Groups will be limited to 20 for each tour. “We’re calling this tour ‘Ripped From the Headlines,’ because the stories that will be told are based on events that happened in Wrightsville’s history,” explained Joyce Heiserman, events director. “These are events that would have appeared in local newspapers at the time.” Heiserman noted that Wrightsville has had at least five newspapers throughout its history, which gives the tour organizers a lot of stories to choose from. “These events are so historically varied and wide, we know they would have been headlines in the papers, even if we don’t still have the actual paper with the headline,” she noted. “The museum committee reviews the information, and all of the tour is based on actual facts from the community.”

Libraries Post GOAL Program York County Libraries and PeoplesBank want first-graders to get a library card and read. Now underway, the annual Grade One At the Library (GOAL) program aims to give a library card to every first-grader in York County. Grade one is typically when children start learning how to read, and York County Libraries offer a collection of easy reader books, ideal for building literacy skills. Children who are in first grade
can participate in the free program, which awards prizes the first three times they visit the library during October and November. One of the prizes is a copy of “Tall Tall Tree” written by featured GOAL author Anthony D. Fredericks, professor emeritus of education at York College of Pennsylvania and author of more than 160 books. Parents can register their children for GOAL at
www.yorklibraries.org/goal or through participating classroom teachers through Friday, Oct. 8. Following registration, library cards will be mailed to students at home. First-graders who are already library members can participate, too. Fredericks will be featured during a virtual GOAL Celebration event for participants and their families on Saturday, Nov. 13. Details will be announced at www.yorklibraries.org.

Historic Wrightsville Inc. (HWI) has announced its Tag-a-Flag for a Vet campaign. HWI’s goal is to have more than 100 tagged American flags on display on the lawn of Historic Wrightsville’s museum, 309 Locust St., for the Veterans Day program on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. There is a fee per tag, and the deadline to order for this year’s
program is Saturday, Oct. 16. Each tag will require the veteran’s complete name, years of service or campaign, branch of service, and rank at discharge. The military-style dog tags will be red or blue with silver engraving and will be hung on a new American flag. A listing of honorees will be kept so that tags will
not be duplicated. This will be an ongoing project with new tags added each year and displayed to the public at the annual Veterans Day program. HWI will maintain and store the flags. To order, call HWI at 717-2521169, email historicwrightsville 1963@gmail.com, or stop by the museum.

tour wraps up with a campfire featuring s’mores and hot apple cider back at the museum. Comfortable walking shoes and a flashlight are recommended. The tour is a fundraiser for Historic Wrightsville Inc., which operates two sites in town - the museum on Locust Street and the Burning of the Bridge Diorama on Hellam Street. “We use the proceeds from the tours to help with upkeep, paying utilities, general operating funds, including archiving and gathering of materials, and needed repairs,” Heiserman explained. The group has been offering the lantern tours for about five years, she said, adding that the event has the “flavor” of Halloween without too much of the fright. “It’s not gory or anything, but there will be a few scares along the way,” she remarked. “The tour will feature lots of historical facts and information about residents and happenings in the town throughout the years.” For more information or to reserve tickets, call the Historic Wrightsville Museum at 717-252-1169, email historicwrightsville1963@gmail.com or stop in.
