Lantern Tour To Highlight Local History, Lore Participants will experience life as it was in the early 1800s when Rivertown Theatre Productions presents Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, themed “Authentic Illusions.” The annual event will take place on Friday, Oct. 16; Sunday, Oct. 18; Friday, Oct. 23; and Saturday, Oct. 24. Tours will run every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the final tour stepping off at 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, 23 and 24, and 8 p.m. on Oct. 18. Returning to directing the tour again this year are Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright, who noted that the event was expanded to two weekends in 2020. “Last year, we had 300 to 350 and we sold out and we had to turn people away,” Wright explained. “That’s why we expanded it. We expect up to 500 people this year.” Due to COVID-19, safety precautions will be in place. “It will be a little different this year,” said Mimnall. “We are asking our tour groups to all wear masks. They will have to remain 6 feet away from our tour
guides at all times. We are limiting our groups to 20 people each.” “Actors will not be wearing masks, which is why they have to stay 6 feet away from the tour groups,” she added. “With voices muffled (by a mask), they can’t perform a specific character.” The tour, led by actors from the nonprofit theater company, will begin and end at the Loyal Order of Moose, 223 Locust St., Columbia, and will venture down Locust and Second streets guided by lantern light. A trolley ride will also be part of the tour, and there will be an indoor location - the historic Samuel Miller mansion, which is now home to Art Printing Company at 131 Locust St. The characters being portrayed on the tour will include both fictional and real-life characters. For example, this year visitors will meet the original owners of the First National Bank of Columbia at the corner of Second and Locust streets. “Each of these characters performs as if they are living in the moment of the time period they were from,” Wright explained. The pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families looking into and plunging into camping during the summer of 2020. For fall, that trend does not seem to be slowing much, and fall weather is often ideal for camping activities. Lantern Tour from pg 1 Wright pointed out that actors on the tour are all volunteers and are of varying ages. “Our youngest actor is 6, and then we have some older folks that work with us,” she said. “They also span counties - York, Lancaster and Lebanon.” Preparation for the event begins in January. “Sara and I start preparing at the very beginning of the year. Scriptwriting takes us to May, and we do auditions in June,” said Wright, noting that rehearsals start in July. “We rehearse once a week and, when it’s closer, two or three times a week. We walk the tour the whole way through. It would be impossible if we did not have the support
system of our actors and their families.” Organizers said the tour is a fun, interesting way to the learn about the local community. “Anybody would find this tour entertaining. We do cover some local history as far as Columbia is concerned, (but) the town’s history is only one part,” Wright said. “There is comedy and drama. former troop member is interred at IGNC, as is the father of a current Scout. The number of graves at IGNC has increased to about 43,000, and the troop has expanded its impact to local cemeteries. The troops laid wreaths at Landisville and Salunga cemeteries last year and will add Rohrerstown/Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery and Laurel Hill Cemetery in Columbia - a total of 1,000 veterans - this year. Three additional burial grounds may be added next year. Evans is recruiting businesses to sponsor the purchase of wreaths, and she hopes to get veterans’ families involved as well, as much for the families as for the Scouts. Evans appreciates being able to share the families’ personal stories with the Scouts. “I can’t give them connections like that with anything I could teach them from a book,” she said. “This is a real thing we’re doing.” Evans related an interaction she had with a woman who sponsored a wreath for her son’s grave last year. “I realized later that she was a Gold Star mom. His wheelchair glides easily up the ramp originally intended for all-terrain vehicles. “I’m not your regular camper,” said Loewen. “I go camping because … I have all my (equipment) with me.” Loewen noted that 90% of his camping expeditions are tied to his love of car racing. He also enjoys the relationships he has developed with other race fans. “I see the same people every year, because we reserve the same (camp sites).” For those who are not sure camping is for them, Shady Maple RV offers rentals, starting with pop-up campers and

Jessica relayed that during a hike through Harvey Winter State Park, a bear foraged ahead of them, continually stopping to look back before disappearing into the brush. She also recalled stepping on a rattlesnake on the Quehanna Trail. Because it was early morning and cold, the snake was sluggish. Kim Pierce and her husband, Gene, of Terre Hill, graduated from a tent to a hybrid camper a few years ago, but she still prefers cooking over an outdoor fire to using the stove in her camper. The couple’s first date was a backpacking outing on the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. “(After) we had a family, we camped at state parks in tents,” said Kim, who noted she loves her hybrid because the canvas reminds her of tenting. Kim honed her campfire skills when she did an internship at Yellowstone and worked as a park ranger in Caledonia State Park. She was introduced to a book called “Roughing It Easy” by Diane Thomas, where she learned how to make a stove from a tuna can, corrugated paper, and paraffin and to cook eggs and bacon in a paper sack. “You can cook cheaply over the

However, the safety factors and other benefits of camping can be achieved without “glamping,” as RVing is sometimes called. ELANCO-area residents and hiking buddies Laura Zimmerman and Jessica Zimmerman, who are related through Laura’s dad and Jessica’s grandmother, do not hesitate to hit the trail for as long as 10 days with up to 35 pounds of clothes, food, water and other supplies, including a tent, on their backs. They can cover as much as 10 miles per day, and they have camped in places like the Quehanna Trail in Elk County, the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Tioga County, and Jessica’s favorite, Black Forest Trail in Lycoming County. The young women often camp well into the fall and as early as April, braving temperatures that can drop into the teens. Laura noted that to keep the food supplies light, they take along a lot of pasta and rice, and they carry dried beef. Laura uses a dehydrator to prepare food ahead for them to take along. The Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta, will present its free Autumn Town Talk on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 2:30 p.m. in the gym/Studio 264 at the rear of the house. Jeri Jones, who owns Jones Geological Services in Spring Grove, will present an encore of his lecture “Cool Geology on the Northwest River Trail.” Along with well-known sites like Chickies Rock and the White Cliffs of Conoy, Jones will speak about features that may pass unnoticed, like vertical ripple marks on the face of Chickies Rock. His presentation will blend geology and history through descriptions of operations and structures that utilized stone and processed minerals from geologic formations along the trail and took advantage of the opportunities the Susquehanna
River presented to produce and transport products by rail and canal. In addition to the lecture, Jones will unveil his new book, “Geologic Guide to the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.” The guide describes more than 25 points of interest along the 14-mile trail that follows the river from Columbia to Falmouth. Sponsored by Susquehanna National Heritage Area and Rivertownes PA USA, the guide will be available at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, and through Rivertownes PA USA. Copies of the guide will also be available for purchase after the Town Talk. Jones, a native of York, has spent more than 40 years studying the forces and events that created the landscapes people see today. He earned a degree in geoarchaeology from Catawba College in North
Carolina. He has taught at area colleges and conducted field trips and programs for people of all ages. He has written four books and contributed to numerous other publications. Jones received the Digman Award for Geologic Excellence from the Eastern Chapter of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers. Current regulations for meetings in Pennsylvania will be observed, and attendees are asked to wear a mask. Studio 264 is not handicappedaccessible. The board of the Marietta Community House sponsors Town Talks as a community service in accordance with the organization’s mission to promote the spiritual, intellectual, educational, social and physical welfare of men, women and children.
