Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” By Chelsea Peifer
Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the advances in science and medicine
like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 and 27, beginning at St.

Columbia Life Network, in partnership with United Way of Lancaster County, is seeking volunteers to support the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Columbia, as the program works to meet an increasing demand for free tax preparation assistance. VITA hopes to prepare an estimated 10,500 total federal, state and local tax returns for low-income individuals and families in the spring of 2019. Volunteers do not need to have tax expertise or experience. United Way will provide free training to individuals willing to commit to volunteering as free tax preparers for VITA clients. Training will take place from November to January. VITA asks volunteers to help for four hours per week during tax season. In 2018, 250 volunteers prepared 10,058 returns for low- to moderateincome families at 17 sites across Lancaster County. Their work returned refunds totaling more than $12.4 million to these individuals and families. To learn more and to volunteer, readers may contact Jaclyn Belew at Belew@uwlanc.org.

Simple measures like prenatal vitamins and checkups make a big difference,” she said. Eventually, Siloam Ethiopia would like to make a difference in the lives of children by opening an orphanage to offer safe housing, education, and nutrition. “There are so many children in the streets,” Ketema remarked, noting that many youths have been orphaned due to AIDS. on Saturday, Oct. 13; inventory all of the supplies that have been donated to the clinic; and negotiate laboratory testing services with a local hospital. “That would be a savings of $300 a month,” Ketema said, noting that using the hospital’s lab would mean Siloam Ethiopia would not have to purchase an expensive complete blood count (CBC) machine. A CBC machine is still on the clinic’s punch list, just to be safe. Siloam Ethiopia would also like to obtain a blood chemistry machine, an autoclave, and a water purification system that would serve the entire clinic. A larger reservoir for water is also desired, as one of the services clinic workers have found themselves providing is access to bathing. It costs Siloam Ethiopia about $4 for each client visit. In the months since the clinic opened, the client base has been predominately female. “We primarily have seen women because women are inordinately affected by poverty,” board member Lindsey Teske said. “Ethiopia is one of six countries in the world that count for half of maternal mortality, and one out of every 64 mothers dies in childbirth.” She shared an additional statistic from the World Health

The deadline to make reservations for the banquet is Monday, Nov. 5. A cost has been set to attend the banquet, and an offering will be accepted. Tide Volleyball Battles Elco Raiders The fall sports season at Columbia High School is heading down the home stretch, with good efforts but not many wins. Here is your weekly Merchandiser fall sports report VOLLEYBALL Coach David Farley and his volleyball team continue to search for their first win of the season following recent losses to Elco and Lancaster Mennonite. Tuesday on the home court against the Lady Raiders, the Tide girls were swept. Prior to that, Farley’s squad lost to Mennonite, 25-13, 25-17 and 25-17. Against the Blazers, Yaniska Del Valle, a senior, had a big match with six kills, two service aces and a team-high 12 digs. Also contributing was Amanda Torres with one block and Desiree Torres with another block. FOOTBALL Improvement as the season goes on, is all any coach wants to see from his team and program. That’s what Crimson Tide football coach Bud Kyle saw from his team during its recent game with Lebanon, a 15-6 loss. “It was a good The Tide’s Meghan Braas reaches to get her hands on an Elco spike during last Tuesday’s Section Three meeting in Columbia.

game. We were the better team but penalties hurt us,”Kyle said. “Penalties hurt us.” “The kids are playing hard and believe they can play with anyone,” the coach said. “The future is bright.” Not only did penalties hurt the Tide against the Cedars but so too did mistakes such as fumbles. The Cedars scored their first points of the game on a safety when quarterback Matt McCleary misplayed a center snap and kicked it out of the end zone for a safety. Lebanon added a touchdown on a pass play later in the first quarter to take an 8-0 lead. The Tide found the end zone in the second quarter on a 1-yard run from running back Luke McGinnis. However, the two-point conversion, in an attempt to tie the game, was off the mark. The home standing Cedars got an insurance score in the final 12 minutes on a short scoring pass. The defense was anchored by Dale Nell and Matt Gambler, who combined for five sacks and a number of hurries. As for the penalties that Kyle mentioned, the game looked like an NFL game with both teams being flagged nine times for a combined 154 yards. Quarterback McCleary was 9 of 27 passing for 71 yards. His favorite targets were Terrence Elliott, who caught four passes for 37 yards and Ryan Redding and McGinnis, who Photo by Vaughn Brown caught two passes each. GOLF Thanks to a co-operative sports agreement with Day Spring Christian Academy of Mountville, Columbia is again offering golf for the first time since the 1980s. The idea of the agreement is for both schools to boost numbers in sports the other school doesn’t offer. Three CHS students are playing golf at DCA - Nathan Resch, Carter Houck and Luke Redding. Of the three, Houck represented DCA/Columbia at the District Three individual championships last week at the Briarwood Golf Club in York. SCHEDULE The football team continues Section 3 play with its first-ever trip to Octorara, the first of two straight road games. Their final, that’s right, home game of the regular season is Oct. 26 against Elco. In volleyball, the Tide girls meet up with Day Spring, Oct. 11, which will be played at the Nook. In cross country, the final meet of the season is at Cocalico, also with Northern Lebanon.

Eastern York Field Hockey Battles Lady Eagles by Eric Pyles
Mid-season slumps are never fun but it is better to get them out of the way before the regular season gives way to the postseason, where one loss brings everything to an abrupt end. Of course, not all midseason slumps are created equal. Take for instance the Eastern York field hockey team. The Lady Golden Knights have dropped two of their last three games, doubling their loss total for the season in the process. But when you look further you see that one of those losses was an overtime thriller against the only undefeated team in all of the YAIAA while the other was a tough luck loss where Eastern controlled the game but could not find the back of the cage. Despite the rough patch head coach Steph Felix keeps preaching to the team “to not let up.” “We continue to work on the basics and
fundamentals to stay sharp and approach each game one day at a time,” said Felix. That approach was good for one win in the previous three games as the Lady Knights were finally able to play what should have been their season opener opposite Middletown. The game was moved to Hershey High School due to poor field conditions at Middletown but it made no difference as Eastern collected a 3-0 victory. Kelsey Felix had an easy day in goal, finishing with zero saves against zero shots. Morgan Arnold led the offense, scoring the game’s final goal with 1:47 remaining and assisting on Lauren Zimmerman’s tally 20 minutes earlier. Cassidy Arnold, with help from Addison Malone, gave Eastern a 1-0 lead near the end of the opening half. The first of the two losses took place on September 27th. The Lady Knights controlled the flow of action, leading to a 12-6 edge in shots and a 17-9 edge in corner attempts but it was the Lady Rams that finished on top thanks to two second half scores from McKenna Channell. Felix finished with four saves. After picking up the win over Middletown on the 29th, Eastern York returned to YAIAA action to kick off October with a visit from Bermudian Springs on the 1st. The end result was a 2-1 overtime loss but the Lady Knights can take solace in knowing they pushed the Lady Eagles more that just about any of their previous opponents. Malone’s late score not only made it a 1-1 game it was just the third goal given up all season by Bermudian’s keeper, Melaina Shoop. Additionally, the late tally sent the game to overtime, just the second such game all season for the Lady Eagles. That inexperience did not matter as Hailey Lamo was able to pick up the game winner in the extra frame handing Eastern York their forth loss of the season and second in three games. GOLF The golf season officially came to a close on September 27th with Nate Hoyer’s participation in the YAIAA Championship. The gathering off

all the YAIAA’s top players was held at Briarwood Golf Club’s East Course where Hoyer started hot, shooting three-over through the front nine. The senior cooled off as he worked his back to the clubhouse, finishing with a 17-over round of 89 that left him five shots off the District 3-AAA cut line. CROSS COUNTRY The cross country teams spent the final Saturday of September at the 26th Annual Carlisle Invitation. Tyler Druck rounded out the top five, finishing 351st with a time of 20:22. Most of the Lady Knights also ran in the Champion Race where Fiona Valore led the way, finishing 276th with a time of 24:38. Abigail Ferry was next to cross the line, taking 303rd with a time of 25:21. Alanna Falk and Savannah Conley finished six-seconds apart with Falk (27:18) taking 331st and Conley (27:24) 339th. The lone Lady Knight that did not compete in the Champion Race was Olivia McLain. She took part in the Challenge Race and turned in a time of 19:56.0, good enough to finish 47th out of the 221 runners. Eastern York returned to regular season action on October 2nd with a trip to Spring Grove where the host Rockets along with York Tech, Gettysburg and Biglerville awaited. The girl’s collected forfeit wins over Spring Grove, York Tech and Biglerville to finish 3-1 on the day. McLain was the first runner to finish, Staff photo clocking a 21:54. Monday in Wrightsville. The boy’s split the day down the middle by
picking up wins over York Tech (26-31) and Biglerville (15-48) while suffering losses to Spring Grove (19-36) and Gettysburg (15-48). Eastern York was able to pick up both wins despite no runners finishing in the top 10. FOOTBALL The last Friday in September surely felt more like a Halloween trick for the Eastern York football team after suffering a 55-21 loss to Gettysburg. The Warriors used Ammon Robinson’s five TD game to blow by the Trevor Seitz led Golden Knights. Seitz accounted for 339 of Eastern’s 367 yards of offensive output by completing 22 of 36 throws. The junior signal caller also played a part in all three Eastern York scores, hooking up with a different target for each touchdown. Still it was no match for Robinson’s monster game that saw him tally 154 rushing yards and make five trips to the end zone, one of which was on an 89-yard kick return that started a run of five straight Gettysburg scores. Robinson’s kick return came 28 seconds into the second quarter and immediately followed a Seitz to Demonte Martin TD that knotted the game at 14-14. Martin’s 11-yard score came as part of his 89-yard, eight catch game but only served to provide the ignition for Robinson. Dylan Zurin, who finished with a game high 125 yards on five catches, accounted for Seitz’s first quarter score, hauling in a 20-yard strike that made it 7-7 midway through the opening frame. Robinson started to take over the game after that Seitz to Zurin score, popping off a 43yard TD run to finish the first quarter scoring with the Warriors on top 14-7. Another touchdown run, this one covering 16 yards and coming five minutes after his kickoff return TD, put Gettysburg up 28-14. Gettysburg picked up one final first half score to make it a 35-14 game at the break. ODEL ENT REM Robinson BASEM TER 2018 FALL/WIN

finished his tear in the third quarter, scoring on runs of four and 13 yards that stretched the Warrior lead to 48-14. Eastern York managed one final touchdown, a two-yarder from Seitz to Kaleb Corwell, as time expired in the third. Gettysburg tacked on one final TD with just over two minutes remaining in the game to set the 55-21 final. BOYS’ SOCCER It took nearly three full weeks but the boys’ soccer team finally broke into the win column for the third time this season. The 2-1 victory went down on September 29th with Eastern topping Dover. Zach Gross and Nate Robbins picked up one goal each while Brady Bixler turned away three shots to preserve the win. Golden Knights fell to Kennard-Dale on October 1st. The teams played through regulation and nearly both overtime periods before KD managed the game winner. Bixler turned away 10 shots in the near miss. One day later the Golden Knights were back at it, playing their fourth straight road game, this one in Glen Rock. Isaac Barrow put Eastern York up early with an unassisted goal in the 5th minute but Susquehannock would take over from there, scoring three unanswered goals to send Eastern York home with a 3-1 loss. Bixler tallied eight saves this time around. GIRLS’ SOCCER The last three games for the girls’ soccer team saw the Lady Golden Knights experience both ends of lopsided finals. Eastern picked up their second win of the season on September 26th by throttling Hanover 10-0 in a rain shortened affair. Ten different players scored, including one for each of the goals during the ninegoal opening half. Cassidy Shetter kicked off the fun with Kyrsten Strange, Katie Case and Maya Stump following for a quick 4-0 lead. Caitlin Shetter made it 5-0 with McKenna Southerland, Liz Heistand, Aubrey Buchanan and Katie Ferry joining in

on the first half action. Sara Peters netted the only goal of the second half while Savannah Yingst finished with a zero save shutout. Three days later Dover came to town and left Wrightsville with a 7-0 victory. The Lady Eagles used two goal games from three different players to cruise to the win. Yingst turned away 13 of the 20 shots she faced. The girls followed with a 9-0 loss to Susquehannock on October 2nd to fall to 2-10 on the season. VOLLEYBALL Make it six straight wins for the Eastern York girls’ volleyball team after the Lady Golden Knights knocked off New Oxford, Warwick and Gettysburg. The wins moved Eastern to 10-2 on the season and have them sitting sixth in the District 3-AAA power rankings with just over two weeks remaining in the regular season. The 3-0 victory over New Oxford took place on September 27th and saw Eastern York post bookend wins of 25-17 to go with a 26-24 game two final. Katie Lehman directed the offense to the tune of 22 assists while Sarah Moore was the beneficiary of a lot of those assists, finishing with a team high 12 kills. Olivia Koicuba (14 digs) and Morgan Winter (eight digs) anchored the defense with help from Lehman’s nine digs. The Lady Golden Knights ventured into Lancaster County for an October 1st match opposite Warwick and came home with a 3-1 win. The girls did falter in a 25-23 game two loss but by opening with a 25-18 victory Eastern had the cushion to absorb the loss. The Lady Knights closed out the match with wins of 25-14 and another 25-18 final. Lehman racked up 36 assists with Moore enjoying 15 kills, three blocks, two digs and two assists. Koicuba also enjoyed a stellar all-around game with 17 digs, four aces, three assists and two kills. Lehman also collected eight digs, while Winter chipped in with nine digs and eight kills. Eastern York’s sixth straight win came one day later, outlasting Gettysburg for a 3-2 win. The Lady Warriors claimed the opening game 25-17, jumping out to an early lead. Eastern used big games from Lehman (43 assists and 12 digs) and Moore (20 kills and eight digs) to take the next two, 25-19 and 25-13 only to see Gettysburg bounce back with a 25-21 game four win. The girls claimed the decisive fifth game by a 15-13 count to secure the victory. Koicuba added 13 digs and three kills to the winning effort while Winter (nine digs, seven kills) and Morgan Dobbeck (eight kills, four digs) helped the cause with a combined 15 kills and 13 digs.
Heart Walk from pg 1 More than 1,500 walkers turned out for the 2018 Lancaster Heart Walk at the Barnstormers’ home stadium in downtown Lancaster on Sept. 15. Participants raised a total of $248,000 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The fundraising total is expected to climb as additional donations are accepted until November. Before departing on the walk through the city and the Franklin & Marshall College campus, walkers had the opportunity to learn about heart health, receive free blood pressure screenings, try out the new American Heart Association blood pressure kiosk sponsored by the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation located at the stadium, learn hands-only CPR, try healthy snacks, and take photos at a photo booth. Local news anchor and master of ceremonies Susan Shapiro and Heart Walk chair Carrie Willets, president of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital, welcomed walkers during the opening ceremonies and introduced the Heinaman family of West Hempfield Township. Ryan and Nicole Heinaman shared the story of their 6-year-old son’s heart defect diagnosis. Ryan and Nicole expected to receive great news about their healthy baby boy during their 20-week ultrasound. When doctors discovered that the baby had a two-vessel cord, they suggested that the Heinamans get more frequent ultrasounds. During an ultrasound at seven months, doctors detected something wrong with their baby’s heart and referred them for additional testing by a pediatric cardiologist. The results were inconclusive, but doctors wanted to follow up after the baby was born. Tyler Heinaman was born in June
2012 and seemed to be healthy and normal. The Heinamans followed up with the pediatric cardiologist two weeks later for testing. This time, doctors could see what was wrong with Tyler’s heart. Tyler was born with a condition called coarctation of the aorta, a narrowing of the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. His heart defect was severe, and he needed surgery to correct it right away. He was flown to Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., where he received surgery five days later. Tyler will still need to be monitored by cardiologists to ensure that the surgical repairs adapt to his growing heart and body, but today he can live a normal life with no restrictions. At the Heart Walk, Tyler and his family led the walkers out of the stadium to kick off the walk. Walkers returned to the stadium to learn the winners of second annual bicycle giveaway drawing sponsored by UPMC Pinnacle, featuring 12 bikes donated by the hospital’s physicians, staff and teams. The walk was preceded by a high-energy warmup led by Wayne Mutata. Dollars raised will support heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention and education. The Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association’s Healthy For Good movement to encourage sustainable healthy lifestyle changes. For more information about the Heart Walk, readers may visit www.heart.org/lancasterwalk or call 717-207-4228. Pictured on front:

Additionally, LCCC members will empty the showroom, which will be the site of the “ladies’ oasis and a display of door prizes and silent auction items. The oasis will feature massages by students at the Mount Joy campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center as well as several vendors. LCCC member Susanna Mooney, who is married to Clyde, related that the vendors typically include a makeup supplier and other vendors of home and beauty products. The show will be held rain or shine. Clyde expressed his hope that if it rains, folks will still come out to participate in the silent auction and door prize drawing. The proceeds from the auction will help the LCCC with its support of Clare House of Lancaster and the LCCC Christmas Angels program. The club will also contribute to the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation (CMAF). Miller was the co-founder of Carlisle Events, which hosts Corvettes at Carlisle; he died from amyloidosis in 2004. The LCCC regularly sells tickets for a drawing for a new Corvette at the Carlisle fete, typically resulting in about $50,000 for the CMAF earmarked for donation and research purposes. Additional funds go to Clare House, which serves homeless women and children and helps them to achieve self-sufficiency. On Oct. 21, exhibitors may register between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. The show will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Attendees may vote for their favorite vehicles, and results will be tallied after the show concludes. Awards will be announced at about 3 p.m. Trophies for first, second, and third places will be
awarded in 14 classes. All General Motors vehicles, as well as anything powered by GM, will be welcome at the show. These include Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn, GMC, and Hummer. Vehicles of all ages may be exhibited. “I’m sure we’ll have more than one 2019 car, Clyde said. “(On the other end of the spectrum), sometimes we have vehicles from the ’30s and ’40s, Foreman added. Music will be broadcast during the show, and a barbecue caterer will sell food and beverages. Spectators may attend free of charge, but prices have been set for exhibitors. Folks who register by Saturday, Oct. 13, will receive a discount. The full price will be charged on the day of the show. The first 200 registered vehicles will merit a goodie bag and an event T-shirt. “It’s a fun show, Susanna commented. “It’s a great opportunity to hang out with people who like cars, socialize, and look at some really neat and unique vehicles, Clyde added. Approximately 30 actors from throughout Lancaster and York counties have been rehearsing for the tour since auditions were held over the summer. The actors will be decked out in period costumes that portray historical figures or ghastly spirits. “The people we get are really passionate about history,” emphasized Wright. Just as some of the actors travel from far and wide to make the event possible, so do those who regularly embark on Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, which Mimnall said began in 2000. “Last year we had a bus trip from Maryland,” Wright recalled. This marks the second year that Mimnall and Wright are directing the tour

together. The 2011 Columbia High School graduates have great memories of going on the tours in high school and later participating in the tour as actors for five years before stepping into their current leadership role. Putting the tour together is a yearlong process that entails writing a script, recruiting sponsors, cultivating actors, working with the Mount Bethel Cemetery board, and coordinating costumers, hair and makeup artists, and countless details and logistics - all of which Mimnall and Wright happily take on for the sake of telling the rich story of their hometown. For more information on Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, readers may visit www.facebook.com/HLTMortalityWithin/ or https://columbiahlt.wordpress.com. Individuals who would like to inquire about volunteering with the 2019 tour may call 717-517-2442. In addition to actors, opportunities are available for folks to help next year with costumes, hair, makeup, technical work, and more.
