Taking Simple Steps To Help Small Businesses Thrive BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

The young couple at a dinner party that Valley Farm Supply owners J.C. and Caren Remsberg attended was frustrated with the challenges facing their small trucking company: hiring people, growing the business, and even the possibility of returning to work for someone else. The Remsbergs were empathetic, and they passed along the same advice J.C. had received from a college friend who owns a logging business. “Nothing is better than being on your own as a businessperson, and he knew that, J.C. related. “We really talked SCORE up to him and (that) he needs to be in the next Simple Steps program. “SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon is an active chapter of professional mentors who are here to help people who want to start or optimize their business, explained certified mentor and education committee chair Catherine Bonser. “This is a service available to small businesses at no charge to them. See SCORE pg 6

Protect yourself and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

The local SCORE chapter offers one-to-one mentoring as well as educational programs, including the flagship “Simple Steps for Starting a Business.” Simple Steps involves five two-hour sessions - currently conducted online - in which experienced professionals cover business planning, funding, legal considerations, marketing, and other subjects. “The Simple Steps program was excellent and helped answer a lot of basic questions we had about business,” J.C. said. “ We got to hear from other new and potential business owners in the program and heard what they wanted to achieve.” Simple Steps alumna and Sage Heart Studio owner Ramona Ndlovu also found the program helpful. “It was an encouragement to see so many other small business owners and hopefuls giving entrepreneurship a try. I was not alone,” she said. “Some of my classmates had already been running successful businesses, and it was especially helpful to hear their questions, insights, and ways of solving challenges.” Ndlovu appreciated the opportunity to ask specific questions about her business,

which enabled her to determine what she could do on her own and where she might need to hire experts. At the first session, she learned about important paperwork she needed to file with a state agency. “The course provided helpful, timely, and thorough information for supporting the growth of my business. In class, the presenters made sure to use class members’ business types as examples so we could better understand how to put the tools into practice,” she remarked. The Simple Steps program is offered six times a year, and information about upcoming sessions is available at https://lancaster. score.org. There is a cost to participate in Simple Steps. SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon offers additional educational programs, some of which have been designed specifically to address current issues in business. “ We regrouped when COVID hit,” Bonser commented. “We put together a number of programs … to help businesses navigate these new waters.” A number of those programs were recorded and posted to the @scorelancaster YouTube account. YorVoice Champions Recognized York County’s 2020 YorVoice champions have been announced. See the Elephant and the Brass Peanuts from Menchey Music was awarded Live Band Champion with its performance of “I Want a New Drug” by Huey Lewis, and Alyssa Colon, sponsored by York Traditions Bank, took home Vocal Champion with her original composition, “Glittering Light.” This year’s YorVoice competition was held virtually on YouTube and Facebook Live after being postponed from March until August. Viewers tuned in from a wide area to watch eight musical acts from York County compete for the title of YorVoice Champion, while raising money for the Cultural Alliance of York County’s 2020 Resiliency Fund. In total, the event raised over $14,000 for York County’s arts and culture community. In a close competition, judges named Jenny Parker, who performed “Wild Horses” by the Rolling Stones, as

The Homecoming court also included fellow seniors (front, from left) Matthew Gick, Mac Matteu, Scott Fisher, Anthony Catterall, Dominic Blanchard, Gavin Bonner, Matthew Doyle, Joe Zelis, Dylan Staub, (back) Ireland Brennan, Isabella Strand, Shannon Staples, Luisa Stout, Lena Ndasi, Gina Bolli, Kelleigh Pollock, Laura Laux, and Grace Keesey.

Rotary Club Holds Golf Tournament The Rotary Club of York East held its annual golf tournament on Sept. 22 at Briarwood Golf Club. Approximately 70 golfers participated. Now in its 17th year, the golf tournament has always supported local groups. In the past few years, the tournament has benefited local charities Catholic Harvest Food Pantry, New Life for Girls, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Susquehanna Heritage, the Salvation Army, Veterans Memorial Gold Star Healing and Peace Garden, York County Veterans Court and York Rescue Mission.
