SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
John Meshey has been involved in the Columbia community for more than 45 years, so it’s fitting that he’s the grand marshal of the 2023 Columbia Mardi Gras Halloween Parade. The parade will step off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26. John, a 1975 graduate of Columbia High School, recalled that he first became involved in the community when he entered a fundraiser to win a prize through the Jaycees when he was 21 years old. “I won one of the prizes, but instead of giving me the prize, they paid my membership dues,” he “It’s a fun time. There’s candy being thrown, and it’s just a fun opportunity to get out and enjoy yourself.” noted. It was the first of many commitments John has made to Columbia over the decades. He’s been a member of the Columbia Lions Club for 10 years and currently serves as service chair. He’s also active with the Sunsnappers, Columbia Park Rangers and Columbia Civil Service Commission, among other organizations. The father of two children and three grandchildren said giving back to his community has always been important to him. “Having children participate in different sporting events, I ended up coaching or selling concessions,” he said. “I have always wanted to be a part of all the community events happening Columbia. People appreciate it, and it’s nice when somebody comes up and says, ‘Thank you for doing this.’” John will be joined in the parade by his wife, Tammy. He noted that he began participating in the parade as a child, recalling how he and some friends dressed up as Laurel and Hardy. Tammy also participated in her youth, with her whole family creating a float annually

“At this event, guests can expect good music, lots of candy and a variety of vendors,” said Rebecca Wright of the Columbia Movers and Shakers Society, describing The Halloween Party in the Park. “They can also expect to see lots of cool decorations, tons of pumpkins and
some very creative costumes.” The Columbia Movers and Shakers Society will host the event in Locust Street Park, 550 Locust St., Columbia, on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 3 to 7 p.m. The rain date will be Sunday, Oct. 29. At least 20 vendors will be on hand for the party, including Levi Spray Art, Cooper’s Comics & See Party pg 5

based on the parade’s theme. This year’s parade has a theme of “Wide World of Sports” and will feature more than 50 units in five divisions. “We have a lot of local groups participating, like the Scouts and lots of school groups,” John said. “We’ll have bands and floats.” Judges will circulate throughout the parade, reviewing entries to award cash prizes. “We have them walk through the parade so that way the spectators can see the groups performing anywhere along
the parade route, not just at a judges’ stand at the end,” he explained. The parade is a true community event, he noted, drawing not only a large number of participants but a large crowd of spectactors as well. “It’s a fun time. There’s candy being thrown, and it’s just a fun opportunity to get out and enjoy yourself,” John said. “We expect a big crowd for this. It’s always been a great time.” The parade will begin at Columbia
Bazaar will feature handmade crafts and more BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“We have such a nice variety of items, and it’s not overwhelming,” said Hilary Smith when describing the Olde Salem Craft Bazaar. “It’s not huge, but there’s still a good variety. It’s an enjoyable fundraiser for us to put together, and it’s fun for people to come to and shop.” The bazaar will be held in the social hall at the rear of Historic Salem United Church of Christ,
324 Walnut St., Columbia, on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We’re going to have toys and Christmas items, handmade plushies, prints and notecards from the Joseph W. Halter Jr. collection,” Smith stated. “He was a Columbia resident, and some of his work is pencil drawings and some are painted. We’re going to have 1-foot-by-1-foot barn quilts, handcrafted blacksmith items, artwork, jewelry and plants. We will also have a Mary Kay rep there.”

Some items are made by congregation members, who get together throughout the year for crafting. Other vendors are friends of members of the church. The event will also feature a variety of food, available for eat-in or takeout. “We’ll have chicken corn soup, sausage minestrone, chili and cream of broccoli soups,” Smith shared. “We’ll have hamburger barbecue, hot dogs and pretzel sandwiches. We will also have stuffing balls, and they are always a big hit. We always sell out of them.” A variety of baked goods, all made by church members, will be for sale as well, including sand tarts, peanut butter balls and cake doughnuts. Several chances to win will also be offered at the bazaar. “We’ll have

Smith noted that the church has held the bazaar for more than 30 years. It’s a fundraiser for the church, with proceeds this year going to support building projects. “Half of the proceeds will go to our property campaign, and half will go to the general fund and outreach,” Smith explained. “We need a new roof for our social hall building, and our parking lot needs repaved.”

Things will get spooky when Marietta Restoration Associates hosts the annual Haunted Marietta event on Friday, Oct. 27, and Saturday, Oct. 28. It will feature a walk-through haunted house from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Union Meeting House, 80 N. Waterford Ave., Marietta. The first hour, from 6 to 7 p.m., will be a non-scary experience for younger children. Lights will be on and there will be no costumed actors in the haunted house. From 7 to 9 p.m., visitors will experience a dark haunted house full of scares and spooky characters. “This is a free haunted house with a small parade beforehand,” said Meghan Fisher, who is helping to organize the event. “It’s a haunted
house that is comparable to other attractions in the area.” The Union Meeting House, which was built in 1818, has been transformed into a spooky site under the supervision of creative director Willis Boyles and his family. Boyles had created a Halloween attraction in his Marietta backyard for many years, inviting the community to attend free of charge. In 2019, Marietta Restoration Associates approached Boyles about collaborating on the event and moving it to the Union Meeting House, where it could take place no matter the weather. Boyles still handles all of the design and creativity for the haunted house, with new features added each year. New this year, the haunted house will open after a costume parade that

This live re-enactment of the true story of the Pilgrims is drawn from primary sources. Thanksgiving Exposed takes guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ being the focal point for all of history. The story traces the Gospel from Jesus to the Apostle Paul to the Gutenberg Press on to England. On the way, it includes a replica of the Wittenberg doors, which guests step through to move into the Reformation and on to Elizabeth I and James I, when persecution began for reformers in England, setting the stage for the rise of the Separatists. Guests then move through six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. It tells the Pilgrim story from their beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland, and their voyage to the New World. Thanksgiving Exposed enables guests to witness how the seeds of Christian self-government were planted and later gave rise to the United States of America. Dayspring Christian Academy’s Class of 2024 will offer treats in front
receive a food box. Meshey noted that the project began with the Columbia Jaycees in 1982. “That first year, we did just one box,” he recalled. “We all brought something in for somebody who needed a food box.” Over the years, the distribution has grown significantly, and the organizers rely on community members to help with delivery of the boxes. More information on delivery time and location will be available closer to the December date. Meshey explained that the club members solicit local businesses and individuals for donations to cover the cost of the food boxes, along with contributing Lions Club money collected throughout the year. Volunteers will also deliver a Christmas dinner on Sunday, Dec. 31, to residents of local senior apartments in lieu of a food box. These meals are prepared by Foresters of America and delivered by the Columbia Lions Club, the Sunsnap-
pers and other community volunteers. Christmas dinners will be delivered to residents of apartments including Trinity House Apartments, St. Peters Apartments, Our Home of Hope, Marietta Senior Apartments, Brereton Manor, Sylvan Retreat Apartments, Faith Friendship Villa and Hershey Mill Home. “As a club, we want to help our community out,” Meshey said. “It’s about the joy you see from the people you deliver to. They are so grateful. It puts a smile on your face, knowing you are helping somebody out who’s in need, and people are thankful for what they’re getting. So many people look forward to it every year.” He encourages anyone with a need to sign up for a box. “It gives you the opportunity to have a traditional Christmas dinner, and if you’re in need of help, it’s OK to ask for it,” he said. “There’s no need to be ashamed. We understand that people run into hardships, and if we can help, we want to.”
