Will Host Seasonal Events
BY CATHY MOLITORISCreate Columbia wants to make the river town a Halloween destination. The group, whose mission is to promote the arts in Columbia, will host two Halloween-themed events on Saturday, Oct. 29, and Sunday, Oct. 30.
On Oct. 29, the group will host a vendor event in the Columbia
Market House, 15 S. Third St., from noon to 2 p.m. The event will showcase antique and vintage Halloween decorations, with a collector on hand to discuss the items and answer questions. The next day, Oct. 30, the second annual Halloween House Tour will be featured. It will run from 3 to 8 p.m. and will consist of four private homes and four public properties.
A Halloween Party In The Park
BY CATHY MOLITORISFrom candy and costumes to pumpkins and ghosts, there’s something for everyone at the Halloween Party in the Park. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 4 p.m. in Locust Street Park, 550 Locust St., Columbia.
The party will be hosted by Columbia’s Movers and Shakers Society, a group of volunteers, community members and business owners focused on promoting Columbia events and activities. “Everything we do is about community and collaboration,” said Alison Liebgott, owner of Switchboard Studios in Columbia and one of the event organizers. “This year’s party is going to be twice as big as last year.”
The party will feature music by DJ Eric Michaels of Music 2 Dance 2 Radio, along with vendors, who will be hosting a candy walk. Chickies Rock Moose Lodge is donating trick-or-treat bags for kids to collect candy, said Rebecca Wright, a member of the Movers and Shakers. “It’s going to be an opportunity for kids to go trickor-treating in a safe environment,” she stated. “We have 16 vendors signed up so far.” Vendors will include Parma Pizza & Grill, Eisenhaur’s Sweets and Eats, Masonic Lodge 286 and AAA Central Penn. The Inversion Co. will be on-site with aerial silks demonstrations, and Columbiabased ghost hunter Rick Fisher will sign copies of his books. A Halloween photo booth will also be set up.
“We will be having our annual pumpkin hunt as well during the party,” Liebgott said. To participate, people can prepurchase a pumpkin, which Liebgott will decorate with a name and design, and the party organizers will hide the pumpkins around the park. “You can come to the party and hunt for your pumpkin,” she explained.
At 7 p.m., a costume contest will be open to the public, featuring five categories - best kids’ costume for children age 12 and under, best teen costume for teens ages 13 to 17, best adult costume for those age 18 and up, best duo costume for people of all ages and scariest costume for people of all ages. The winner of each category will receive a prize.
Chris Vera of the Columbia Historical Preservation Society will host walking ghost tours of downtown Columbia and the Columbia Market House dungeon during the Halloween Party in the Park. Two tours will be offered - one at 6 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. - and space is limited.
Proceeds from the party will be donated to Raven Ridge Wildlife Center and will also benefit Columbia’s Movers and Shakers Society, which is working on applying for 501(c)(3) status.
“This party is where you want to be for Halloween,” Liebgott remarked. “Last year, we had 350 people come through, and we expect more this year. It’s truly a community Halloween party.”
The rain date for the party is Sunday, Oct. 30. For more information on the party, search for “Halloween Party in the Park” on Facebook. To sign up for the pumpkin hunt or the ghost tours, visit www.switchboard studiosandgallery.com.

The team recently participated in a Pink Out game to raise funds for a local breast cancer organization.

“This is not a scary tour,” said Kay Leader, a member of Create Columbia. “It’s an opportunity to see Halloween decorations and maybe get some inspiration for your own house.”
Tour-goers may proceed through the route at their own pace and in any order. Two venues will have lim-
ited hours during the tour. Mount Bethel Cemetery, located at 700 Locust St., will offer mini tours from 3 to 6:30 p.m. and will be open for exploration until 7 p.m. Art Printing Co., 131 Locust St., will be part of the tour from 3 to 6 p.m. Both venues are also participating in the Haunted Lantern Tour, which will run concur-

Susquehanna National Heritage Area will host a fall lecture with Monica Spiese on “Oral History” at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, on Thursday, Nov. 10, from 6 to 7 p.m. Spiese is a historian at Millersville University.
Attendees will learn about the importance of oral history and how to gather and share personal stories and oral histories. After the lecture, participants will be invited
to explore “Columbia’s Storied Places” exhibit and further immerse themselves in Columbia’s history. Participants may also add their own story or memory to the interactive story map of Columbia.
There is a cost to attend. Seating is limited, and advance registration is recommended. To register, visit https://susqnha.org/events/ or call 717-449-5607. Proceeds benefit the operations and programs of the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center.

rently to the house tour.
Additional sites on the house tour include the Columbia School of Music, the Columbia Market House and a variety of homes that will be decorated for the holiday.
Leader noted that last year’s inaugural tour was well-received. “I’m still getting positive feedback and still hearing good things about last year’s tour,” she stated.
Denise Brubaker, a member of Create Columbia who participated in the first tour, will again open her home this year. She and her husband, Gary, are Halloween enthusiasts who keep a downstairs room decorated for the holiday year-round.
“I like this tour, because all of the stops are different,” Denise remarked. “I don’t decorate like anyone else on the tour, and you’re going to see something unique at each location.” She also emphasized that even though her home was on last year’s tour, visitors will see new things this time around.
Proceeds from the tour will help fund Create Columbia’s mission and its projects, including providing scholarships for students to pursue

O V E LOVE with Your Legs
“A lot of girls on the team and the coaches as well have firsthand experience with breast cancer affecting their family members or people they know,” said senior player Kya Hubler. The team decided to sell Pink Out T-shirts to raise funds for Pink Power, a York-based nonprofit. Team members’ moms also made baked goods to sell at the Pink Out game, with proceeds going to Pink Power as well.
The Pink Out game was held on Oct. 4 against Northeastern High School. Before the game, the team members presented a check for $2,000 to Pink Power. The final amount is expected to be closer to $2,600 after all proceeds from the bake sale and a teacher dress-down day are tabulated.
“We wanted to do this to raise
awareness of the fight against breast cancer, but also to raise awareness of the team and bring the community together for the game,” said senior Brooklyn Camara.
Kelsea Storm, a senior player, said the volleyball team works well together. “We’ve really improved throughout the year,” she stated of the 22-member team. “I think we just keep getting better.”
Junior Taylor Sawmiller emphasized that the Pink Out game was just one of many fundraisers that sports teams at Eastern hold throughout the year. “Eastern is a very community-oriented school,” she said. “There’s so much great support for our team, for other teams and for organizations in our area.”
Pink Power was founded in 2017 with the mission of raising money and awareness for breast cancerrelated causes. Head coach Kristie Bunn chose the organization, noting, “I wanted to be sure we went with a local charity so that all of the money would benefit people in this community.” She said the girls fully embraced the idea of the Pink Out, the first event of its kind for the

Come Shopping At A Church Bazaar
BY CATHY MOLITORISThere is really something for everyone at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church’s bazaar, whether you’re looking for food, homemade crafts or thrift-store treasures, said Mary Ann Eshleman, bazaar organizer. The event will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 1290 River Road, Marietta.
“For food, we are doing soup and barbecue to go again this year like we did last year,” Eshleman noted. The selection of soups will include ham and bean, vegetable beef and chicken corn, along with whatever other types church members choose to make. “We’ll have a variety to choose from,” she remarked. “We’ll also have hamburger and pork barbecue, and we always have a lot of baked goods, like cookies, candy and snacks. The baked goods are most people’s favorite part of the bazaar. They
walk in the door and head straight to them.”
Throughout the year, church members get together about once a month to make craft items for the bazaar. Items for sale will include a variety of wood crafts such as snowmen, sleds and other Christmas decorations, as well as year-round décor. “Some of our wooden items are made from repurposed wood, including pallets,” Eshleman commented, adding that items also include window frame mirrors, a bench, wall sconces and stools.
Other craft items that will be featured include crocheted stuffed animals, hats, scarves and an afghan, as well as beaded jewelry, notebooks and ornaments.
A white elephant area of the bazaar will feature a little of everything, Eshleman said. “There’s usually a big section of jigsaw puzzles and books,” she said. “There’s lots of miscellaneous variety and lots of good bargains.”
Half of the proceeds from the bazaar will go toward the church’s elevator fund, and half will support outreach ministries, including the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank, school supplies for local students and programs for local senior citizens.
Eshleman said the bazaar is not
just a fundraiser but also a way for the church to connect with the community. “We like to give back, and we like putting on an event that promotes good fellowship,” she shared. “The bazaar also involves everybody in our congregation in some way, from making crafts to making food to helping during the event.”
