New Location from pg 1 A local church called The Miracle Center recently purchased the building at 732 W. Main St., Mount Joy, on Sept. 28. The building was formerly Simp-Lee Seafood. In July 2017, the church, then located in Columbia, launched a one-year, $50,000 building campaign when it was notified it could not renew the lease on the location it had at the time. The church leadership, including pastor Ricky Morales, began searching for a location for the 8-year-old church, but plans for several potential options fell through. Two weeks before The Miracle Center was to vacate its premises, the church learned of the building on West Main Street. When the church decided to make an offer for the building, the members realized they needed to increase their fundraising goal to $65,000. They held numerous fundraisers, including banquets, auctions, and bake sales. Members sold crafts, such as handbags, and children got involved by drawing

before the holidays. “And, guys, this is a good time to take your wife or girlfriend out so she won’t be upset when you’re hunting,” added Bell with a laugh. Bell described the band’s performance at last year’s fundraising dance as “unbelievable.” Tickets sold out for that event, and organizers are hoping for another successful year. Full-price tickets will be available to purchase at the door while supplies last. Interested individuals may purchase discounted tickets in advance from any member of the Friends of the Kreutz Creek Library or the Collinsville Discount Band or by stopping in at the VFW or the library, located at 66 Walnut Springs Road, York. Proceeds from the dance will go toward furnishing the new Kreutz Creek Library. According to Bell, the capital campaign for the new building will officially kick off in April 2019, with construction set to begin at the end of 2020 or in early 2021. A fundraising goal of $3,000 has been set for the dance in order to eventually help purchase new furniture, bookshelves, and so forth for the new space. In addition to fundraising for the new library building, the Friends of the Kreutz Creek Library help to raise funds to support the current programs offered at the library and to meet a $35,000 portion of the library’s overall budget. “(A lot of) patrons think the state funds the entire library, but that’s not the case. What we raise isn’t for extra things; it’s to fund bills,” explained Bell. “This dance is a time for people to get together, enjoy themselves, and support the library.” To learn more about the dance or the library, readers may call 717-2524080 or visit www.yorklibraries.org/ hellam-kreutz-creek.

Tide Gridders Dominate Northern Lebanon The fall sports season at Columbia High School ended last weekend with the much improved football team at ho me against Elco and two cross country runners competing in the District Three championships. Here is your next-to-last weekly Merchandiser fall sports recap for the fall season at Columbia High School. FOOTBALL It’s been a while since the Columbia High School football team won more than a game. You have to go back to 2013 to find that. Friday, Oct. 19 ended that streak as the Tide dominated Northern Lebanon, 34-19 for their third win of the season against six losses. It’s the first time since that 2013 season that the Tide gridders won back to back games. Had
it not been for a nine point loss to Lebanon and a two point loss to Ephrata, a few weeks ago, the Tide very well could have been talking playoffs for the first time in six years. Junior quarterback Matt McCleary had a great game against the Vikings. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 267 yards with three scores through the air and another on the ground. For his game, McCleary received Player of the Week honors. The first half was entertaining for both teams. Columbia dominated the first part of the half - Northern Lebanon, the second part. It all ended in a 13-13 halftime deadlock. Coach Bud Kyle’s team had its way offensively against NL. With the calm Photo by Vaughn Brown Photo by Vaughn Brown and cool McCleary at the helm, the Columbia’s Phillip Acosta an extra point out of Matthew Columbia’s Darnell Tucker catches a 14-yard touchdown pass in McCleary’s hold during the Tide’s 34-19 Section Three victory front of the Vikings’ Alex Folmer during the Tide’s 34-19 Section over host Northern Lebanon on October 19. Three win at Northern Lebanon on October 19.
Tide started at its own 28 and needed nine plays to find pay dirt on a 7 yard pass from McCleary to Demetrius Diaz-Ellis to take a 6-0 lead. On their next possession, the Tide was rolling again. They scored on a 27 yard pass from McCleary to Michael Poole. Phil Acosta kicked the PAT to take a 13-0 lead in the second quarter. That’s when Northern Lebanon gained momentum. Thanks in part to the Tide. On the
ensuing kickoff, the Tide allowed the Vikings to return the football to midfield. It ended in a score for NL. On the Tide’s next offensive series, they drove deep on the NL side of the field but McCleary was picked off in the end zone. Columbia was hit with a 15-yard penalty on the play, giving NL life at the 35. They scored in the final seconds of the first half to tie the game. That would be as close as the Vikings would get as the Tide dominated the second half.

They opened the second half scoring on a 14-yard pass from McCleary to Darnell Tucker and later another score on a 1-yard run by McCleary to take a 28-13 lead. After the Vikings scored to pull within 28-19, Columbia iced the win on a touchdown in the final minute of the game. VOLLEYBALL Columbia closed its volleyball season with a pair of losses in a rare doubleheader against L-L League newcomer Octorara. The doubleheader was needed because of an earlier postponement at Octorara. Not only was it the final games for coach David Farley, who is retiring after 19 years with the program, but five senior girls who were recognized prior to the games. They are Onyx Rodriquez, Javy Fernandez, Meghan Braas, Desiree Torres and
Yashinka Del Valle. CROSS COUNTRY It is post-season time for the Tide as runners Cassidy Cook and Anthony Palmisano competed in the District Three Class A cross country championships at Big Spring High School on Saturday, Oct. 26. An update will be provided next week.

The Trojans took over in the fourth, scoring three times and converting all three two-point attempts to steal the win. Eastern York’s lone highlight of the final quarter was Zurin’s third TD of the night, a 23-yard score that capped the senior’s 180-yard, three score night. Zurin and Martin finished with nearly identical receiving lines in the loss...Zurin posted a six catch, 157 yard and two score game while Martin finished with 160 yards and two scores on nine catches. Kaleb Corwell accounted for another 63 yards of Seitz’s total. VOLLEYBALL History is in the works for the Eastern York girls’ volleyball team. The Lady Golden Knights first historic event was qualifying for the county playoffs for the first time since 2011. Their second historic event was a 3-1 win over York Catholic on October 22nd in the county playoffs, Eastern’s first county playoff win since 1991. “It definitely feels great!” said head coach Josh Korb. “We have made districts for two years now, but just missed counties. It is an awesome feeling to represent YAIAA this year as well.” Korb’s squad set the tone with a

The Eastern York football team is in the middle of a stretch that just might prove there is little truth to the old saying that offense wins games and defense wins championships with their previous three games as perfect examples. The Golden Knights have scored 33, 42 and 43 points in those
games but found themselves on the wrong side of the final score in all three contests including their October 19th meeting with Wissahickon that ended as a 58-43 loss. “The past three games have witnessed quite the offensive output; however, we are not satisfied and will look to improve as costly mistakes have not allowed us to reach our full

Abby Smith filled the rest of the stat sheet with 11 kills, five aces, one dig and one block. Korb offered some parting thoughts on his team’s historic win. “With it being a playoff match, I was curious to see how the team played under pressure and they exceeded expectations. It is a great feeling to play well against a high caliber team and it just demonstrates that we are playoff ready team.” The win over York Catholic set up a semifinal showdown with last year’s YAIAA runner-up and current ninth ranked AA team in the PAVCA poll, Delone Catholic. The Lady Golden Knights were not able to continue their history making charge in their October 23rd meeting, falling to the Squirettes 3-2. “It was wild. We started slow the first two sets,” said Korb. “We couldn’t find our rhythm until we rolled into the 3rd set.” The rolling that Korb was referring to was a 26-24 game three win that kept Eastern York’s hopes alive. The Lady Golden Knights continued to rebound from the 25-18 and 25-21 losses in games one and two with a 25-17 game four win that forced a decisive game five. The changes that Korb and his team made to pick up those wins were not as effective in the final game leading to an 18-16 Delone win. See Eastern pg 10

potential. Penalties, missed assignments and turnovers are all areas, which we will look to improve upon,” said head coach Josh Campbell. “Though we are breaking records on offense, we have not been able to achieve the most important statistic, which is winning. Each day we will look to find a way to finish out opponents and allow our ultimate goal of winning.” Despite racking up 461 yards of offense against Wissahickon, the Golden Knights ended up with the loss after allowing 490 yards to the Trojans, 293 and five touchdowns coming on the ground. The Trevor Seitz led passing attack accounted for 436 of Eastern’s 461 yards and four of their six scores but it was the Wissahickon ground game that put the first points on the board. Seitz quickly erased that 6-0 deficit by finding Dylan Zurin for a 27-yard score and a 7-6 lead. The game appeared to be all Eastern as the Golden Knights enjoyed two more first quarter TDs but momentum would not stay with Eastern York. Another Zurin score, this one on a nine-yard rush, combined with a 25yard Bryce Henise interception return for a touchdown pushed Eastern’s lead to 21-6 late in the opening frame. Wissahickon was able to start their comeback with the final points of the quarter. Tommy Quinn found Maurice Willis for a 45-yard strike that made it 21-12. The scoring waned in the second with the teams’ combining for just two scores, the first another Seitz TD pass. This time he hit Demonte Martin for a 15-yard score and a 28-12 cushion. The Trojans managed to trim the lead to 28-20 at halftime with Quinn’s second and final TD pass of the game. This one covered 22 yards and was followed by the first of five successful two-point conversions. Wissahickon managed to tie the game at 28-28 with the first of two third quarter scores for the Trojans. Eastern York was able to counter the 47-yard run and successful two-point try with another Seitz to Martin hookup. Seitz’s third TD pass of the game and second to Martin covered 69yards and put the Golden Knights

business owner stepped up to the task this past summer. Columbia native Lewis Weber started his own business, L. Weber Painting, 12 years ago with a minivan and two crew members. Hower had known Weber as a child and said that as soon as she contacted him about the need for improvements at the Columbia VFW, he was immediately willing to donate the time and services of his business. “It’s just so exciting to think that there are still people out there who will do things like this, Hower remarked. “Columbia VFW, our veterans, and our community would like to extend a very warm and respectful thank you to Lewis for giving back to Columbia in (memory of) his mom, Linda Weber. According to Hower, the crew spent three 10-hour days repairing and painting the exterior of the Columbia VFW in extremely hot and humid temperatures this summer. She was thrilled with how quickly the crew members completed the project and noted that last year Weber had also donated two weeks of labor to repairing and painting the restrooms at Glatfelter Field. “(Linda) would have been very proud to know her son gave back to veterans and Columbia, the town she loved so much, Hower said. “And now his kids can drive by the Columbia VFW and say, ‘My dad made this happen.’
Hower is still working to raise funds and find assistance with completing other updates to the building, such as replacing the roof and air-conditioning system. “ We just don’t make enough money to do repairs, she explained. The building is approximately 50 years old, with the exception of an addition that was put on in the 1980s. Individuals interested in making a financial donation may call the VFW at 717-684-7380 or stop in. The Columbia VFW currently has approximately 480 members and is open from 1 to 10 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, as well as from 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays. To become an active member, interested individuals must join under a relative who has served in the military and is an active member. Anyone is welcome to join as a social member. Bingo events, which are open to the general public, take place on the third Saturday of each month. Doors open at noon, and play begins at 1 p.m. Additionally, the Columbia VFW hosts an oldies dance from 5 to 9 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month. Hower noted that building rentals are one of the things that currently keep the location afloat financially. Folks who are interested in renting out the Columbia VFW for weddings, parties, and other events may call 717-684-7380.

They did just that with a 3-1 win over Susquehannock on October 18th. The Lady Golden Knights had another four players register double digit digs led by Koicuba with 22. Dobbeck and Winter added 19 apiece while Lehman tacked on 10 digs to her 37 assists. Smith tallied a team high 12 kills while Moore (seven), Koicuba (three) and Dobbeck (eight) helped with a combined 18 kills. FIELD HOCKEY The Eastern York field hockey team was unable to pull off a March Madness style upset in their District 3-1A first round contest. The 12th seeded Lady Golden Knights fell to the fifth seeded Lady Raiders of ELCO by a 3-0 count on October 24th. Anya Kissinger, Myah Yesko and Alicia Yoh each scored once to bring an end to Eastern York’s season with a 12-7 mark.
“It was unfortunate that we couldn’t close the match with a win, but it definitely shows we are able to play with all of the state-ranked teams in the league, stated Korb. “I’m happy with how we battled back and look forward to a great showing in districts. Four different players finished with double digit digs starting with Olivia Koicuba’s team leading 23. Dobbeck paired 10 kills with 14 digs while Moore added another 10 digs to her team high 19 kills and Winter tacked on 10 more digs. Lehman finished with a 43 assist, six dig, one kill and two ace line while Smith chipped in with 15 kills and four blocks. Before the Lady Golden Knights could make their first YAIAA tourney appearance in seven years they had to finish out the 2018 regular season.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church pastor Traci Glover (left) and (continuing from second from left) members Mary Eppley, Gail Houck, and Mary Ann Eshleman invite the community to a holiday bazaar at the church on Nov. 2 and 3. Handmade crafts, white elephant gifts, food, and baked goods will be among the selection. All of the items are created by congregation members or friends of the church, noted organizer Mary Ann Eshleman. For Zion Lutheran, the bazaar is an event that everyone pitches in to make possible. “Most of the people in the church either make

something or help with setting up or in some other way,” Eshleman shared. In addition to the crafts, another popular part of the annual event is a white elephant gift area. Gently used, low-cost items such as puzzles, games, books, decorations, and more will be available for shoppers to peruse and purchase. Attendees may also pay to enter to win several giveaways for gift cards paired with homemade items. Plenty of food and beverages will be available to purchase on both days at the bazaar, including barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, chicken corn soup, ham and bean soup, and beef vegetable soup. Homemade baked goods such as candy, cookies, and pumpkin rolls will also be among the selection. Plus, the church’s international gift shop will be open during the bazaar. Typically open before and after weekly Sunday worship services, the shop features fair-trade items that are made by individuals from all over the world, such as scarves, jewelry, coffee, chocolate, and home décor. “It’s another nice option for people to shop for gifts,” Eshleman remarked. Proceeds from the bazaar benefit the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank and the church’s facilities task fund particularly in helping with payments for an elevator that was installed at the church in March 2017 and dedicated in September 2017. To learn more, readers may call the church at 717-426-1884.

Ironville UMC Welcomes New Pastor, Plans Holiday Bazaar
The church has something to say about it. Coming to church is not just to feel good but to share God’s love with those outside this place.” Impink hopes that he can inspire his congregations to share God’s peace with others, promoting healing of individual hurts, strengthening relationships, and destroying prejudices. When he preaches, he uses visual aids and does not use a pulpit, preferring to have a more casual interaction with the congregation. “If I can’t remember (my sermon), what chance do you have of remembering anything I say?” Impink asked. “He gives us inserts in the bulletin with spaces to fill in the blanks,” said Ironville member and bazaar coordinator Ellie Shirk. “It helps to see where he’s going.” “I want them to not just learn about God but be transformed by Him,” Impink added. “I want you to come into the conversation and see that Jesus has things to say. There, 20 names were listed under the headings of “in memory of” and “in honor of,” up from 16 the previous year. “We’ve lost a lot this year,” Jones remarked. “It shows you the scope (of the reach of cancer),” said team member Nancy Yale. “Everybody’s touched by cancer,” added Carol Allison, the other co-captain. The members of Ken’s Cancer Fighters host fundraising events throughout the year. They participate in the East Petersburg community yard sale and host an ongoing candy sale. The team will have candy bars in flavors like sea salt caramel, almond toffee, and chocolate mint available for purchase at its annual craft show on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Living Hope Community Church, 2823 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Also at the event, more than 25 vendors will sell a variety of products, including
small tools, jewelry, antiques, yard art, fragranced wax melts, stamped goods, holiday décor, crocheted items, scarves, and more. The team will sell chili and soup by the bowl or quart, along with hot dogs, snacks, coffee, and baked goods. Last year’s craft show brought in $2,000, contributing to the best-ever fundraising total for the team. “This year, we’ll do better,” Yale asserted. “We’re selling a lot of chocolate. I work in a department with hungry men. That’s where my candy bars go.” In addition to selling candy bars, Yale makes yard art that she sells at two events in the spring. She donates all of her proceeds to the team. The team members indicated a desire to add more activities to their fundraising calendar. “We would like more events to do fundraising instead of the same things,” said team member Barb Deery, suggesting that a painting night is in the works. Folks who would like to be kept up-todate on fundraising activities for Ken’s Cancer Fighters, as well as those who would like to inquire about vending opportunities at the craft show, may call Allison at 717-394-8583.

should impact how we live every day.” Sunday school classes for adults are offered at 9:30 a.m., and worship services are held at 10:30 a.m. A children’s program and nursery care are available during the services. Rachelle sings and plays the piano, and Impink plays drums, so the couple has been giving input to the music. “They’re trying to jazz up the music too. It’s fun,” Shirk remarked. “There’s a lot of talent in this congregation,” Impink added, explaining that he has recruited a number of musicians to work together to accompany congregational singing. Guests are welcome to visit any Sunday. During November, Impink will preach on gratitude. “It’s a shame Thanksgiving gets only one day,” he explained. “In November, we’ll take some time to pause and reflect on how we’ve been blessed.” For more information about the holiday bazaar, call the church at 717-684-8072.

The members of Ironville UMC will hold a holiday bazaar on Nov. 3. The church welcomed the Rev. Greg Impink (back) as its pastor in July.
R023343
By Dayna M. Reidenouer The members of Ironville United Methodist Church (UMC), 4020 Holly Drive, Columbia, will host their annual holiday bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ten vendors in addition to church crafters will sell jewelry, aprons, artwork, knitted items, holiday décor, and more. There will also be a white elephant room offering household items, books, and toys. Santa Claus will visit, and Santa’s Workshop will offer make-and-take crafts for a small fee. Food and beverages will be sold during the event. The offerings will include pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs and optional sauerkraut, chicken corn soup, beverages, and baked goods. Tables will be set up so folks may eat at the bazaar, and high chairs will be available. The proceeds from the bazaar will help to fund the purchase of a new roof for the church. The Rev. Greg Impink, who began working at the church and neighboring Newtown UMC on July 1, noted that the roof has been leaking for many years, so he is happy that the job is slated to be done. Impink previously was the lead pastor at Limeville UMC in Gap. Prior to that, he began his career in the ministry by working as associate pastor at Hempfield UMC. Impink grew up in Latrobe and graduated from Penn State. When he and his wife, Rachelle, moved to Mountville five years ago, Rachelle encouraged him to apply for the position at Hempfield UMC. After starting at that church, Impink enrolled in Palmer Theological Seminary, and he graduated in May this year. He is also a chaplain at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. “The church exists for those outside of it,” Impink said, explaining his philosophy of ministry. “We live in a very hurting world.
