SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LXI • NO 39
Christmas Food Boxes Will Support Community or more than 30 years, the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers have been providing free Christmas dinner food boxes to the community. A pandemic wasn’t going to stop that, said John Meshey, project coordinator. “There is a need for this in our community,” he noted. “This year, a lot of people are hurting.” Christmas dinner boxes will be delivered to the community on Sunday, Dec. 20. The deadline to register for a box is Friday, Dec. 4, and early registration is encouraged. To register, readers may email ColumbiaChristmasFoodBoxes@gm ail.com or call 717-715-3592. Each box will contain the fixings for a traditional Christmas meal, Meshey said. “It will include a turkey, bread, milk, potatoes, canned vegetables, stuffing and a few other items,” he stated. The organizations expect to pack 700 boxes for families in the Columbia and surrounding areas, he noted, adding that the event has

grown significantly over the years. “ When this started about 35 years ago, we had one family we helped,” Meshey recalled. “We knew there were people who could use something over the holidays to brighten their day. It just grew from there, and this year especially, we’re really happy to be continuing the tradition.” COVID-19 has changed a few things about the operation, he said, including how the boxes will be packed. “We are looking for community groups to sign up to pack boxes the Friday and Saturday before we distribute them,” he explained. “We want people to schedule a time to come in and help so that we can keep the groups small.” On delivery day, a system will be set up to limit contact as much as possible, Meshey said. “When people come to help deliver the boxes, we’re going to load up their car and then they’ll go off and deliver,” he said. “They won’t be going inside anyone’s home. They’ll leave the box on the porch.”
Columbia UMC Will Offer Free Thanksgiving Meal BY CATHY MOLITORIS
On Thursday, Nov. 26, the fellowship hall at Columbia United Methodist Church will be empty, but the community will still feel the church’s love. That is the day the church will give away Thanksgiving dinners, as it has done for the past 10 years. “We usually have a sit-down dinner, but we couldn’t do that this See Thanksgiving Meal pg 5

The store carries groceries, general merchandise, clothing, and anything else that can be found for a good price. After the store reached about eight months in business, store customers were surveyed to ascertain what they liked and what was missing. As a result, AJ’s now

passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer
until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and
unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he

Food Boxes from pg 1 He said it was important that the tradition of delivering the boxes continued, despite the pandemic. “ What makes our event unique is that we actually deliver,” he noted. “There are places people can go and stand in line to get a meal, but we bring the meal right to the people that are in need.” The Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers raise money all year to pay for items in the boxes, he said, as well as relying on donations from community organizations, businesses and individuals.
In addition to the box delivery, the groups have joined forces with Foresters of America to provide Christmas dinner to residents of area senior apartments and communities, including Trinity House, St. Peter Apartments, Our Home of Hope, Marietta Senior Apartments, Brereton Manor and Sylvan Retreat. Those meals will be delivered on Sunday, Dec. 27. “We are happy to provide a service to the people of Columbia,” Meshey said. “We want to help people in need.”

The shift to remote work and virtual school has quickly expanded the need for this service. Hotspots provide a way for community members to get online for job searches, schoolwork, and resources in the comfort of their homes. York County Libraries partnered with T-Mobile for a three-month hotspot pilot project that launched in December 2019 at Martin Library in York city and Collinsville Community Library in Brogue. The project tested if hotspots could meet the needs of residents in two very different communities, urban and rural. Both areas have their own challenges with connectivity, but the project discovered that there is a community need and demand for this service.

There is no cost for the meal, Price said, and funding for ingredients is provided by church and community donations. Price anticipates serving about 150 meals and noted that anyone is eligible to receive one. “We have a lot of need in our community,” she stated. “We have older people who don’t cook anymore or people who don’t have anyone to visit for Thanksgiving, and this way, they can still enjoy a nice meal.” In addition to the takeout meals, the church will provide meals to the Hands Across the Street ministry in Columbia as well. Price said it will be hard to see the fellowship hall deserted on Thanksgiving, but the spirit of the event will live on. “It’s not really about the hall,” she said, adding that the church is still open for services at 10 a.m. on Sundays. “It’s about the people, and it’s about our community. It’s about keeping traditions alive in our church, and it’s about letting our community know we are here for them.”

The reservation deadline is Friday, Nov. 20. “The idea for this meal started about 10 years ago,” said Price, who noted that it was the brainchild of church member Charles Kelly. “He liked the sense of family this meal provides to the community. Some of the people who come to the meal do not have a family to spend the day with, so we become their family. It’s a way to spend the day together.” Although this year’s meal will be different logistically, the motivation for the event is the same, Price said. “We didn’t want to cancel this year even though a lot of things are being canceled,” she explained. “We want to still provide a meal for people and remind them we are still here for them.” The Thanksgiving meal will

With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s

culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted
A carriage ride through the streets of Jim Thorpe is a great way to see the quaint shops and beautiful architecture. Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart). Dining is just as varied. While shopping downtown, stop by Café Arielle at the Stabin Museum, a destination restaurant housed in an old wireworks factory and silk mill, complete with an underground stream and outdoor garden patio. The popular Broadway Grille & Pub is a favorite for locals and visitors, and Stella’s Secret Speakeasy above Tony Stella’s Encore restaurant is the perfect place for an evening cocktail; just make sure you know the password. Outdoors enthusiasts can
enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all, the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9-mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle through the gorge and surrounding waterways. Several outfitters are available to arrange tours to explore the region’s waters. Naturalists may want to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary. Romantic small-town charm, entrepreneurship, a legendary past and scenic vistas all make their home in the Pocono Mountains’ Jim Thorpe. Discover this unique spot for a weekend getaway in the Switzerland of America. Visit whereandwhen.com/jim -thorpe for more on Jim Thorpe, including the Jail House Museum, which is said to be haunted by the Ghosts of the Molly Maguires. Note: Some of the attractions mentioned in the article may be closed for the season or have altered hours due to COVID-19. Please check websites for days and hours of operation.

The bazaar is a great way for congregation members to show off their creative talents, said Eshleman, who is a jewelry maker. “We have so many people in our congregation who are really talented. We’re not a large church, but we have people who enjoy getting together and crafting throughout the year, she noted. Eshleman said the bazaar is always well attended, with people who are new each year to regulars who come year after year. “I see a lot of people return each year and they tell me, ‘I always look forward to this bazaar,’ she stated. She encourages anyone looking for unique items to come out and support the church. “There is going to be such a great variety, she said. “If you’re looking for Christmas gifts, or something to satisfy your sweet tooth, or you just want to pick up some soup to go home and have for lunch, you can do that here. For more information on the bazaar or to preorder soup or barbecue for pickup during the bazaar, readers may call the church at 717-426-1884 or visit www.zionmarietta.org.

“Elf the Musical,” based on the film “Elf,” will play at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Thursday, Nov. 12, through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021. This musical comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his identity and help New York City remember the true meaning of Christmas. As a young orphan, Buddy crawls into Santa’s bag and winds up in the North Pole, where he is raised, unaware that he is human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to discover his identity. For the second time in his career, Kole Mitchell McKinley will play the part of Buddy the Elf. McKinley is from North Carolina and is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical performance theater. Although new to the Dutch Apple stage, he appeared in Dutch Apple’s virtual cabaret series this spring. Performances will be on Tuesday through Sunday evenings with selected
matinees. There will be separate dinner and show ticket pricing for adults, for students ages 13 to 18 and for children under age 12. Special pricing is available for groups of 16 people or more. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling 717898-1900, visiting www.DutchApple.com or stopping at the box office at 510 Centerville Road in Lancaster.

ONE LITTLE FLU SHOT CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE Protect P Pr rot otect ec ct yourself your yo urse ur self lf and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.
