Veterans Day Service Planned At Historic Wrightsville Museum By Chelsea Peifer

Area residents are invited to join Historic Wrightsville Inc. and American Legion Post 469 for a community Veterans Day service at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Historic Wrightsville Museum, 309 Locust St., Wrightsville. Lisa Burk of Historic Wrightsville said that last year’s ceremony for the rededication of Union Cemetery included a Veterans Day observation that many attendees seemed to appreciate. “Someone said that this was very nice and Historic Wrightsville should do a service every year, so we decided to try it this year,” Burk noted. American Legion Post 469 commander Kurtis Timmer will be the featured speaker at the service, which organizers estimate will last approximately one hour. A choir led by Bob Gotwols and Sydney Lehman and composed of local residents will provide music. Individuals who would like to be part of the choir may call the museum at 717-252-1169. A community Veterans Day service is planned for 1 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the Historic Wrightsville Museum. All are welcome to attend, and the museum will be open for visitors to explore as well, with displays including the current “Remembering Wrightsville’s Veterans” exhibit.

Savory Pork And Sauerkraut St. James Lutheran To Host Dinner

By Chelsea Peifer

Every November, during Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week, thousands of shoeboxes stuffed to the gills with small toys, school supplies, and hygiene items are collected to deliver to children in need around the world. While there are thousands of drop-off sites throughout the country, Deb Ward, who serves as the volunteer area coordinator for Lancaster and Lebanon counties, noted that this region is consistently one of the areas that collects the largest number of boxes. “We collected around 32,000 boxes last year,” Ward said. “We’ve got a huge goal this year, and we’re really praying See Operation Christmas Child pg 2

By Chelsea Peifer

Each year, Operation Christmas Child delivers shoeboxes filled with small gifts and essentials to children in need in approximately 120 nations. National Collection Week will take place from Nov. 12 to 19, when folks may take filled shoeboxes to any of the designated drop-off sites nearby.

For some people in Lancaster County, pork and sauerkraut is a meal associated with New Year’s Day celebrations in accordance with the longstanding German tradition of eating it to gain wealth and blessings for the new year. But why not enjoy the delicious combination more than once a year? The folks at St. James Lutheran Church, 655 S. 10th St., Columbia, have been hosting a pork and sauerkraut dinner for the community for nearly 40 years. This year’s event is set to take place at the church on Saturday, Nov. 17. Meals will be served familystyle from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the church See Pork And Sauerkraut pg 6

Members of St. James Lutheran Church in Columbia, including (back row, from left) Richard McComsey, Bob Buzzendore Sr., pastor Mark Kopp, Jim Lease, Sharon Pennell, Leo Barninger, Bob Fickes, (front row) Cathie Miller, Betty Albin, Peg Shenberger, Lynn Morrison, Vickie Waugh, Norma Hinkle, Dick Hinkle, and (seated) Betty Kuhn, invite the community to a pork and sauerkraut dinner on Nov. 17 at the church.

to get over 37,000.” National Collection Week is set to take place from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19, for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers like Ward get to experience the joy that abounds as adults, youths, and children drop off the shoeboxes at various locations before they are shipped to a distribution center in Baltimore. From there, Ward said the boxes are taken by tractor trailers, airplanes, or ships to the approximately 120 nations where children will receive the gifts. “During collection week, the best thing to see is when a family walks in and the child is carrying a box and they’re so proud they made this box and so excited that a little kid is going to get a box (they) made themselves,” shared Ward. “They’re getting gifts for children in a war-torn or (developing) country who may

have never received anything like this before.” “For me personally, I get to pray over the boxes at each location,” Ward continued. “That blesses my heart, to know that I can touch so many lives in that way, because each box represents a person.” In April 2017, Ward had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to help hand out shoeboxes to children and youths along with other Operation Christmas Child volunteer area coordinators from around the United States. Ward said that sometimes depending on logistics, the boxes are not distributed immediately at Christmas but later on throughout the year. This was the case with the Rwanda delivery, but the timing did not take away from the recipients’ delight. “You see almost a void of joy, and when that gift comes in, they really come alive,” Ward recalled.

“The void that was in their eyes becomes this amazing joy. Like we say, it’s the light of Christ that comes in.” One 11-year-old boy in Rwanda opened a box that included a pair of winter gloves, causing Ward and the other volunteers to feel dismayed about him receiving something so impractical for the climate where he lived. However, they were surprised to see his exuberant reaction. “He was thrilled, and the translator explained it was because he had needed a pair of gloves to try out to be a soccer goalie, but his family couldn’t afford to buy any,” Ward relayed. “So the gloves turned out to be perfect.” Ward explained that families may use a medium-size shoebox they already own, purchase a designated Operation Christmas Child box at Hobby Lobby, or contact any of the drop-off locations to see if they have any extra boxes available. Drop-off locations in Lancaster County include the following:

LCBC - Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim; Jerusalem Church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim; New Life Church, 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster; Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street; Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland; and Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. To view the times for each location or to find additional drop-off sites in surrounding areas, interested individuals may visit www.samaritans purse.org/operation-christmas -child/drop-off-locations/. Additional instructions and suggestions on what to pack in the boxes according to age and gender may also be found at the website. Generally, each box should include one special item such as a stuffed animal, soccer ball with a pump, or clothing outfit, and then be filled in with other toys, school supplies, and hygiene items.

“It’s time for our club’s annual show,” announced Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club president Chris Haefner. The fifth fall show will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. Separate prices have been set for admission for adults and for students. Children age 5

and under will be admitted free of charge. During the event, club members will display various fossils, minerals, and crystals found locally and all around the world. Haefner made special note of select fossil ferns from St. Clair, Pa.; wavellite found in only Pennsylvania and Arkansas; rare tabular graphite crystals in blue quartz that the club discovered in

Exton in 2013; and trilobite fossils from the Kinzers formation in Lancaster and York counties. “Something that is significant is a new genus,” Haefner related. “(I found a) new form of life in 2017, and photos and details of the research will be shared to those who inquire.” He noted that the creature appears to have been the size of a small onion, with tendrils that reached out to collect food. Haefner uncovered the first fossil in the York side of the Kinzers formation, and a second of better quality was found in spring this year. Both specimens were found in soft-bodied fossilization, a unique form of preservation in which soft body parts are present to see. Both specimens are in the final stages

of study in Europe before papers will be written and published about the newly discovered creatures. Eventually, the fossils are slated to go to the Smithsonian Institute. While the unique fossils will not be available for purchase, there will be thousands of other fossils, gems, and minerals for sale. Additionally, hot food will be sold by the church guild. Plenty of parking will be available at the church. The entrance for the show will be located on the lower level at the rear of the church, and it is handicappedaccessible. For more information, readers may contact Haefner and his wife, Cathy, at silverfordinc@ yahoo.com or 717-285-0870.

organization they wish to support, and clicking the Fundraise button. Additionally, this year dozens of individuals across Lancaster County will be part of spreading the word about the Extraordinary Give by being part of the Give Fleet. The volunteer driving squad is open to members of the public who would like to promote the Extraordinary Give by applying a specially designed magnet to their personal or business vehicle. Magnets will be available through the Lancaster County Community Foundation. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their own magnet at any time from Saturday, Nov. 10, to Friday, Nov. 16. Any licensed driver is eligible to be part of the Give Fleet and may register to participate at the Extraordinary Give website. On Nov. 16, community members may also support the day of fundraising by attending the Family Give Fest and the ExtraGive Fest. Both events are free and open to the public. The Family Give Fest will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Lancaster Marriott, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Children, parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are invited to participate. The event is designed with preschool and elementary children in mind. Families will be able to learn about causes in Lancaster that impact local families every day, give their thoughts on what is important to them, and share their passion with others. The festival will include interactive learning stations, on-site ExtraGive T-shirt printing, and a family photo station. Steven Courtney will present live music. The ExtraGive Fest will follow from 6 p.m. to midnight on the second and third floors of the

Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center. Attendees may count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give and attend performances by local and regional bands. ExtraGive Fest will also serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, featuring screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, social media stations for photo opportunities, and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. From 5 p.m. to midnight, the Griest Building in Penn Square will be aglow with a 14-story light show, making it a glowing symbol of the community’s generosity during the Extraordinary Give. The light show will feature changing colors and patterns that ExtraGive Fest attendees may customize by pushing integrated buttons in an interactive experience. The lights’

responses to the individuals’ actions are meant to create a metaphorical example of how each individual action may impact the community. The record-breaking 2017 Extraordinary Give generated a total of $8.6 million for 464 nonprofit organizations in a single day. More than $31 million has been generated since the creation of the Extraordinary Give in 2012. For more information about the 2018 Extraordinary Give, including a list of participating organizations, readers may visit www.ExtraGive.org. Market St., Marietta, will hold a special event to honor all veterans on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. A short ceremony will feature speakers and members of the Marietta American Legion Post 466. various grants. The Buy-A-Brick campaign continues to raise funds to maintain the structure. In addition to the ceremony, the Marietta Community House will honor veterans by displaying a copy of the original dedication of the Marietta War Memorial for veterans of the Marietta vicinity who served in World War II. The brochure from the 1946 dedication features photos and write-ups of the veterans who

served. All veterans are invited to attend as well as families and friends of those who served, especially those from World War II. The public is also invited to attend. to provide access (to the program) by (making) GOTR available where girls gather after school, which is not always at school,” explained GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “Many times that’s in community organizations like Boys and Girls Club,” said Johnson. “We will be inclusive in ensuring that all girls feel the curriculum is relevant and reflects their life experience and that all girls feel listened to, valued, and part of a team.” With that in mind, a team of nine girls from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club began meeting on Sept. 10, and the group will take part in its first 5K when GOTR Lancaster holds its fall run at Millersville University on Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 9 a.m. Registration for the untimed run in the Pucillo Gymnasium will begin at 7 a.m. GOTR kicked off its fall season on Sept. 4 with 61 teams and 800 girls meeting in every school district in the county. Jessica Wilson, who has coached the Blue Ball Elementary team, said that this year’s 5K will include a variety of activities for the girls and their running buddies. “The presenting sponsor, (a local) orthopedic and physical therapy practice, will create a temporary tattoo that reflects GOTR and the fall 5K,” said Wilson. In addition, the primping items that the girls may use before the race will include colored hair spray, face paint crayons, and bracelets they can inscribe. Wilson noted that Millersville University students take a special interest in the 5K. “All the Millersville University athletic teams send representatives on Saturday morning,” Wilson said. “As all the girls are running, (the Millersville students) will be cheering at the tops of their lungs or forming tunnels with their hands for the girls to run through or creating a high-five line (for the runners).” Wilson noted that the Millersville students can provide a real boost. “A girl who is struggling with motivation will turn the corner and see that team and take off,” said Wilson. “It lifts the spirit.” Johnson noted that in addition, members of area high school clubs volunteer at the 5K. Johnson shared that GOTR staff members are pleased to welcome the new team from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club to the program. “We are so excited to be branching out to a nontraditional site,” she stated, noting that the program is always mindful of physical and cognitive disabilities. “We will strive to provide curriculum modifications when needed, and we promise all girls will have a coach who has been trained to understand social context and create positive and inclusive environments and build genuine relationships.” Jennifer West, program director for GOTR Lancaster, expressed gratitude for those who volunteered to lead the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club team. “We have one staff member, one intern, and the father of a girl on another city team who stepped up to coach,” said West. “He saw the need, and we are really excited about that.” Both West and Johnson hope to see more teams that meet outside the traditional sites take part in the program. “We

Tide Teams End Fall Sports Season The fall sports season is over at Columbia High School without any November action for the first time in years. Here is your weekly Merchandiser sports report. CROSS COUNTRY The only CHS sport to make the post season was cross country, who had two runners participate in the District Three Class A Cross Country championships on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Big Spring High School in Newville.

Although they didn’t advance to this weekend’s PIAA championships, the two Columbia runners, both sophomores, did well. Cassidy Cook and Anthony Palmisano, placed 52nd and 55nd, respectively, at the district championships. Cook ran the course in 26:52.7, while Palmisano ran a 20:00.7. FOOTBALL There’s plenty to be excited about for the Crimson Tide in football, despite a 3-7 overall mark. The win total is a high mark for the program, who hasn’t won more than

a game since 2013. And, the best news is that 27 of the 30 players are scheduled to return next season. The Tide closed its rebuilding season on Friday, Oct. 26, with a 50-22 loss at the hands of Elco. “The season came to an end and it was a tough, fought game. We didn’t pull it out but we fought until the end and just fell short of making the playoffs,” said coach Bud Kyle. “The Tide is rising.” Elco, who finished tied for second place in Section 3, won the game by running the football, 40 times for 386

yards and they didn’t throw a pass. The Raiders jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead before the Tide got on the scoreboard on a 31 yard pass from quarterback Matt McCleary to Terrance Elliott. The two also hooked up on a 23 yard pass, trailing 28-7. McCleary in the second half completed a third score covering 20 yards to Ryan Redding. The two-point PAT was the “Philly Special,” as Redding completed the conversion pass to McCleary to end the scoring. For the game, McCleary completed 18 of 32 passes for 278 yards and three scores. His top receiver was Elliott with six catches for a career high 132 yards, while Redding also Photo by Jeremy Madea caught six for 78 yards. Terrance Elliott catches a 31-yard touchdown pass for the Tide during their season-finale with Elco in Columbia on October 26.

Golden Knights dropped their District 3-3A quarterfinal match opposite West York on Typically, when the phrase ‘Three-Peat’ is October 30th, the third loss to the Lady Bulltossed around the sports world it is seen as a dogs this season. good thing but that is not the case for the Despite a third 3-0 loss to West York in the Eastern York girls’ volleyball team. The Lady last six weeks that brought his squad’s season to an end head coach Josh Korb remained upbeat. “I was pleased with how we performed,” said the second-year skipper. “The girls left it all on the court and gave West York a good battle.” That good battle with the fifth ranked 3A team in the most recent PA Volleyball Coaches Association rankings saw Eastern end up on the wrong end of a 2521, 25-19 and 25-14 final. “Our defense was incredibly strong and our back row was digging up everything to keep the ball alive, but defense can only last for so long and West York has a very powerful offense,” said Korb and the stats back him up as the team combined for 33 digs and just 16 assists and 15 kills. Morgan Dobbeck led the defensive effort with 10 digs while Katie Lehman (seven digs), Staff photo Olivia Koicuba (six digs), Sarah Sarah Moore slaps a winner for the Golden Moore (five digs) and Morgan Knights during their District Three Class 3A Winter (five digs) all offered supquarterfinal match with host West York last port. (four kills), Abby Smith (four kills) and Winter (three kills) leading the way in kills. “I am proud of how the girls performed this year and especially during the post season,” was Korb’s final thought on a season that saw his team go 15-5 while picking up their first YAIAA playoff win in over 25 years. The Lady Golden Knights earned their third shot at West York by picking up their third District 3 first round win in the last six years on October 27th. “It was definitely a good feeling to win on Saturday,” said Korb of the 3-1 victory over Northern York. “Not to take anything away from Northern, they had a very scrappy team who left it all on the floor, but our heads were not in it on Saturday, our homecoming was that evening, so it was a definite distraction going into the match,” offered Korb regarding the Lady Polar Bears winning game two 25-23 after his squad posted a 25-19 game one win. Thankfully for Korb and the Lady Golden Knights they were able to bounce back with wins of 25-23 and 25-19 to secure the match. Lehman finished the win with 41 assists and three digs along with one kill and one block. Smith (18 kills) and Moore (14 kills) were on the receiving end of a lot of those Lehman assists while combining for 10 digs, five aces and one Moore block. Dobbeck added two aces and one assist to her eight kills and eight digs while Koicuba finished things off with four digs to go with three kills, assists and aces. CROSS COUNTRY Saturday October 27th saw the end of the cross country season for all but one Eastern York runner. Olivia McClain was that runner, conquering what head coach Joel Jacobs described as “less than ideal” conditions, to qualify for the November 3rd PIAA Championship race. On a cold and rainy day that left the Big Spring course muddy and slow McLain turned in a 19:46.5, just 19 seconds off her personal best, finishing fourth in the girl’s 2A race. “She ran a great race,” said Jacobs. McLain was joined in Newville by a handful of other Golden Knights but only Fiona Valore participated in the girl’s race, finishing 121st with a time of 24:38. Pierre Allard led the boy’s team by posting the 83rd fastest time, a 19:06.9. Taylor Cappeluti and Chase Reed crossed the finish line at nearly the same time with Cappeluti taking 135th with a time of 19:54.9 and Reed 136th with a time of 19:55.0. Tyler Druck followed in 155th place (20:30.5) while Anthony Roselli finished up

the scoring five for Eastern York with a 166th place run of 20:51.4. Ben Elicker wrapped up the Eastern York contingent with a time of 20:56.7, good enough for 171st. FOOTBALL Winning is always better than losing and it gets even sweeter when that win snaps a losing streak or comes on homecoming. Such was the case for the Eastern York football team with their 5627 homecoming victory over Kennard-Dale busting up a sevengame slide that started back on September 7th. “Any victory, whether it is the first game, the last game, or homecoming is a blessing,” said head coach Josh Campbell. “The players, coaches and community put a lot of work and effort in each week. With having three close losses, back-to-back-toback, it was satisfying to see the player’s hard work pay off. We were looking to put a complete game together and achieve our ultimate goal of winning.” As he has all year, Trevor Seitz piloted the attack, capping his stellar junior season with 298 yards and six touchdowns on just 11 completions. The impressive final game left Seitz with 2800 passing yards on the season while the six TD passes pushed his season total to 37. Against the Rams, Seitz started racking up stats nearly from the opening whistle, hitting Dylan Zurin for a 52-yard score early in the opening frame. The pair hooked up again moments later on Zurin’s only other catch, this one from 65-yards out, making it 14-0 after the Brady Bixler PAT. Zurin, who finished with those two touchdowns and 116 yards, surrendered his early favorite receiver status to Demonte Martin for the remainder of the game. Martin did not disappoint, racking up 117 yards and four scores on just five catches, putting his season totals at 1018 yards and 21 scores. The first of those four TD catches finished off Eastern York’s

Martin’s three remaining visits to the end zone all came in the second quarter starting with a 20-yard TD that made it 28-7. Jacob Rose broke up the Seitz to Martin show by scoring Kennard-Dale’s second TD on a 14-yard burst that made it 28-13. Martin resumed his domination with touchdown catches of 32 and 17 yards to give Eastern York a 42-13 cushion at the break. The Rams opened the second half scoring with a five-yard Wyatt McCleary score only to see Eastern answer on the ensuing kickoff. Jesse Edgell took that kickoff 80 yards to paydirt for a 49-21 Golden Knight lead. Kaleb Corwell capped his evening and the Eastern York scoring with a 46-yard touchdown run. That score highlighted his 133 combined rushing and receiving yards and made it a 56-27 game. Millersville University Theatre will present the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” at 8 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 8 to 10, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. The performances, featuring students, faculty, and alumni, will take place in Clair Performance Hall at the Winter Center, 60 Cottage Ave., Millersville. “Jesus Christ Superstar” is a rock opera that is said to have reinvented musical theater for the modern age. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by

Tim Rice, the musical is loosely based on the final week in the life of Jesus Christ, from the point of view of Judas Iscariot, and features a mix of musical styles that draw upon 1970s rock, gospel, folk, and funk themes. Tickets can be purchased at www.MUTicketsOnline.com, by calling 717-781-7600, or by visiting the box offices at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and in the Student Memorial Center, Room 103, on the Millersville University campus.
