Columbia Students To Perform Comedic Murder Mystery By Chelsea Peifer
Students in the Columbia High School (CHS) Theater Department are getting ready to perform Mike Steele and Matt Steele’s comedic murder mystery “A Family Reunion to Die For!” At the Knotting family reunion, newlywed Christine Franklin, portrayed by Ciara Ramos, is eager to introduce her husband, Freddie, played by Isaiah Spencer, to family members she has not seen in years. Things quickly turn south when three relatives are murdered, and chaos and hilarity ensue as the couple works to solve the series of murders. Audience participation, including prizes for successful sleuthing, will make “A Family Reunion to Die For!” an extra fun experience. Students will
perform the show at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, in the CHS cafeteria, 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia. Tickets may be purchased at the door, and separate prices have been set for adults and for senior citizens and students. An ice cream sundae bar will be included with the cost of admission, and audience members may enjoy the dessert during the performance. Changing Lives One Class At A Time Grant To Support READ Program By Ann Mead Ash
About a decade ago, Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), was an empty nester. A professional violinist and music teacher, she listened as her husband, Chuck, a pastor, described the trauma suffered by the children of the incarcerated offenders he was working with. “My husband was
doing a lot of pastoring with criminal offenders, and I was starting to see the families up close and seeing how devastating parental incarceration was for children,” said Diana, who asked herself what she could do to help. “I thought music would be a great way to help them, and that’s what I had to give. I saw (music) was healing for them, (and See SWAN pg 2

SWAN from pg 1 same things she does. She also appreciates how participating in the musical program affects her outlook. “I like that music can change your mood,” she said. “If someone is sad, music can brighten up their day.” Willow, who is in first grade, called SWAN “a magical place.” “I have always liked music, and I like to be in programs,” said Willow, who listed a number of instruments she has had a chance to play through SWAN. Willow added that she likes to perform, even though she may be a little nervous to start. “After I perform, I feel happy and I am ready to enjoy the rest of my day and think about this wonderful memory,” she said. “It makes me feel confident and gives me courage.” Diana explained that performance is an important part of the program, noting that participants perform for family, friends, and community members in settings like schools, nursing homes, and First Friday events. One of SWAN’s first students is now helping to teach others. Bryanna Still, who is now a student at Dayspring Christian Academy, has dealt with a lot of trauma, but she has excelled musically. “She has made wonderful decisions,” said Diana, of Bryanna, who assisted at the SWAN summer camp and won accolades from the instructors. “We can help children with their behavior, physical, emotional, scholastic, and social issues if we understand what is going on in their lives,” said Diana. “Their present circumstances do not need to determine who they are or what they do.” Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org.

Livingston, a stage actress with an enormous ego. “She loves being the center of attention. Her whole life is a stage,” emphasized Morgan. “The hard part of playing her is making sure your movements are big.” Julia Jones will portray Gretchen Wilcox, who is Christine’s elderly aunt and the owner of Wilcox’s Western Bed and Breakfast, a resort in the Virgin Islands where the show takes place. “She is a weird old lady and goes from nice to mean on the flip of a dime,” described Julia. “It’s fun playing her because you get to yell at people.” “It’s extremely funny, very interesting, and very suspenseful,” commented Juliana Anderson. She will portray Lola Matthews, a former showgirl originally from New York City who also happens to be a national knitting champion. Director Janet Wood selects four to five shows each year and
allows a group of students to read through them to help select a show for the coming year. “We were looking for a murder mystery, and this was the one they favored,” said Wood. Morgan and Juliana noted that Wood’s enthusiasm for the theater department and care for each student is what has made their years performing plays and musicals at Columbia so wonderful, along with the closeness of everyone involved. “One of the things you’ll find with every show here is that we’re like a family, and we support each other,” said Morgan. The cast features students in seventh through 12th grades. Additional cast members include Madison Quarry, Melanie CruzBernard, Carly VanBuren, Kaitlin Scheele, Alexis Phillips, Aliya Gerold, Taylor Williams, Georgie Kauf hold, Tristan Anderson, Jah’Dez Santos, and Derick Kinser.

Both group and private lessons are now held in 13 SDoL schools. SWAN also has a summer camp, which meets at the Wharton Business School in Lancaster. “ We give the children 120 hours of instruction during camp,” said Diana, who noted that once the SDoL recognized the need for the program, SWAN was welcomed into the schools. “The district is becoming more trauma informed and trauma aware,” said Diana, who added that recent state laws will require teachers to become more trauma informed. Currently, SWAN receives referrals of students whose parents have a history of incarceration from intervention specialists and family counselors who work for the district. Each Tuesday at 3 p.m., Lauren Reyes, a SWAN music educator, meets with about 10 students at Wickersham Elementary. Her hour with the group includes singing and working with instruments such as hand drums, drumline instruments, guitars, and ukuleles. “What Lauren is bringing this year is a program that uses melody and percussion along with singing,” said Diana. Reyes said that she wants to promote improvisation and collaboration to encourage students to create. “I try to get a good community working together,” she said, noting that the approach she uses is multicultural. Program, read-alouds, and STEM and coding programming at the library. The grant will allow the library to purchase books and other incentives for students who complete reading challenges with Tommy, the READ rottweiler that visits the library and Park Elementary School with his trainer and handler, Kelly Skiptunas. “Up until now, Kelly has been buying things for the students out of her pocket,” noted Greybill. Skiptunas, who resides in Wrightsville, has been visiting the Columbia Public Library with her trained dogs for more than 10 years. She first visited with her dog Benny, who was a bone cancer survivor and was recognized as the first rottweiler to win the American Kennel Club (AKC) Humane Award for Canine Excellence (ACE). Benny passed away at age 10. Tommy, who is certified with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, has devoted eight years to therapy work in local libraries, schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. Tommy, Skiptunas, and Greybill travel to Park Elementary School every other Thursday to spend time reading with students in various grade levels, as well as with students in the IU 13 life skills class. Skiptunas and Tommy also frequently visit the library for read-alouds and during the annual Summer Reading Program. “Kids always remember his name,” commented Greybill. “Tommy is such a happy-golucky dog, and I think the kids pick up on that,” Skiptunas said. She noted that reading therapy with dogs has numerous benefits, one of which is the opportunity for someone to practice reading aloud without fear of failure and judgment. “We all learn at our own pace. If (students) who are struggling make mistakes, that doesn’t matter to (Tommy),” agreed Greybill. “We are hoping it encourages kids to love reading for life,” emphasized Skiptunas. “And we hope it helps in developing a lifelong love for animals,” Greybill added. “You never outgrow reading. There are places you might never see, but you can visit them in a book.” To learn more about the Columbia Public Library, people may call 717-684-2255 or visit https://columbiapubliclibrary.org.
The Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) has announced that the eighth annual Extraordinary Give will take place on Friday, Nov. 22. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals can visit www.Extra Give.org, choose from more than 500 local nonprofit organizations, make a secure online donation, and have their gift stretched through at least a $500,000 stretch pool. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors Rodgers & Associates, High Foundation, and additional corporate sponsors. The 2018 Extraordinary Give was a record-breaking day, in generating $10.2 million from more than 23,500 donors to support 493 nonprofit organizations. Since the event started in 2012, the Extraordinary Give has engaged more than 30,000 people in giving, supported more than 500 nonprofits, and raised $42 million for the community. New for the 2019 Extraordinary Give, the minimum gift amount has been reduced from $25 to $10. The change was made with the goal of inspiring more individuals to participate and generating more engagement from across the region. The new minimum amount aligns with the Community Foundation strategic priority of inclusion and aims to continue increasing the number of unique donors who make a gift during the event.
A number of returning features are planned this year, as well. The Extraordinary Give will again offer an opportunity for individuals to leverage their social media networks in support of a nonprofit they care about by becoming a “Fundraising Champion.” Fundraising Champions may activate their personal networks to generate giving for the causes they care about using a personal link. To become a Fundraising Champion, readers may visit www.extragive.org, find their favorite organization, and choose the button that says “Fundraise.” The members of the Give Fleet, a volunteer driving squad open to the public, will promote the event by applying a temporary decal to their personal or business vehicle. Decals will be available through the LCCF. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their decals at any time during the month of November. Any licensed driver is eligible and can register to participate at www.extragive.org/info/extra -opportunities. On Nov. 22, ExtraGive Hot Spots will be located in Columbia and Elizabethtown, at The Shops at Rockvale, and at other venues in order to highlight locations across Lancaster County. Additional details are forthcoming. The ExtraGive Fest, the Extraordinary Finale, will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 22 at the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. The event, free and open to the public, will offer the community an opportunity to count down the final hours of
the Extraordinary Give. Designed by Lititz-based event company ATOMIC and local firm Shumaker PDT, ExtraGive Fest will serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, feature local and regional bands, show screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, and have social media stations for photo-ops and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. New this year will be the ExtraGive Food Truck Lane. Guests can enjoy a selection of local food vendors parked on South Queen Street adjacent to the Lancaster County Convention Center. Downtown Lancaster will again be aglow with a 14-story light show at the Griest Building in Penn Square, which will feature changing colors and patterns from 5 p.m. to midnight. For more information, including a list of participants, readers may visit www.extragive.org. Pictured on front: The eighth annual Extraordinary Give, set for Friday, Nov. 22, will give individuals the opportunity to donate to participating organizations of their choice and have their donation stretched through at least a $500,000 stretch pool and an additional $50,000 in prizes. Various special events will take place in Lancaster County throughout the day, concluding with the ExtraGive Fest from 6 p.m. to midnight in downtown Lancaster.

In describing the concept behind this year’s HOPE Breakfast, Brian Boycan, regional representative with HOPE International, turned to a parable. In the parable, Christ tells of a man who is hosting a banquet and invited many guests who refused to attend. The man then sent his servants into the streets to invite any who would come and join in the celebration. “Christ said when you have a banquet … invite those who can’t pay you back,” noted Boycan. “That’s what we’re called to do. We’re not in it for people to recognize us or return the favor. We want to help folks that nobody else has believed in.” HOPE International, which was founded in 1998, is a Lancaster-based nonprofit that strives to empower clients through basic business training to help them start their own businesses. “Investing in Dreams” is the theme of this year’s buffetstyle breakfast, which will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Friday, Nov. 22, from 7 to 9 a.m. As it was last year, this year’s breakfast will be held on the same day as the Extraordinary Give, Lancaster County’s largest day of online giving. Peter Greer, president and CEO of HOPE, will speak on the topic of “Investing in Dreams.” Greer received a degree in international business from Messiah

Andrew Samuel
College. He also holds a master’s in political and economic development from the Harvard Kennedy School. He has worked internationally as a microfinance adviser. He is the author of several books, including “Mission Drift.” In addition to Greer’s talk, the breakfast will feature a panel discussion, a presentation Boycan noted that HOPE has wanted to hold for some time. “We will have a panel of three regional kingdom-minded entrepreneurs who will answer the question ‘Who believed in you?’” explained Boycan. “Most successful business people didn’t get there by themselves.” The three entrepreneurs will be Andrew Samuel, founder, chairman, and CEO of LinkBank; David Millary, president of EDU-Plus International Inc.; and Crystal Weaver, Lancaster-based entrepreneur and co-founder and COO of The Commons Co. and co-owner of
Passenger Coffee Roasters, Prince Street Café, and Blue Line Lancaster. Boycan believes the panel discussion will exemplify HOPE’s mission. “That’s what those people (who believed in) the entrepreneurs (did for them),” he said. “They invested in them. That’s what we do. We reach out to people who are underserved and marginalized and vulnerable, and we believe in them.” HOPE provided $5,000 in loans in its first year of existence. HOPE had loaned out $161 million by 2008, and in the last 10 years, $1.36 billion has been loaned. HOPE now serves 965,000 clients in 16 countries. “I did the math,” noted Boycan. “If all of our clients stood handin-hand, it would take us from Lancaster to Jacksonville, Fla.” Further, Boycan noted, “If you laid $1.36 billion dollar bills end-to-end, they would go around the world five times.” Boycan thinks those who at-
tend the breakfast will have opportunities to learn from the experience. “We think it will be an inspiring morning,” he said. “All of us have the opportunity to believe in others where some may not see their potential. That’s what HOPE is about, and (at the breakfast), we hope to inspire people to believe in what we’re doing.” Boycan recalled that the 2018 breakfast was held on a morning when the area received a surprise snowfall of six inches. This year, he hopes for better weather and to see 300 or more people attend the event. Readers who would like to learn more about the breakfast may visit www.hopeinternational .org/lancasterbreakfast. There is no cost to attend the breakfast; however, reservations must be made by Friday, Nov. 15. Individuals may register by calling 717-464-3220, ext. 554, or emailing Jbeachy@hope international.org

ry, Wayne Mutata of iTrain studios got the crowd warmed up and pumped up to walk, leading a chant of Emmett’s name to kick things off. Walkers had the option of walking a 1-mile route around the stadium or a 3-mile route that continued around Buchanan Park. Fulton Bank, Penn Medicine LGH and UPMC Lititz took home the top company team honors. Bernadette Taylor of the Fulton Bank team, Terrie Byrd of the Penn Medicine LGH team and Liz Eshbach of the UPMC Lititz team were honored as the top walkers. Funds raised will support the American Heart Association’s mission to build longer, healthier lives through community education, public policy advocacy, health care quality improvement and investment in life-saving research. The Lancaster Heart Walk was presented by LGH and Fulton Bank, with additional support from the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, UPMC Pinnacle and WellSpan Ephrata. Emmett was diagnosed in utero at 21 weeks with a congenital heart defect called double inlet left ventricle.
