Eastern York High School Holds Homecoming

In a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. To inspire generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler.

You’re Invited To Thanksgiving Dinner BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

The meal must go on. Not wanting the Mountville area to lose its public Thanksgiving dinner when the original hosts retired 14 years ago, Greg and Dolly Workman of The Workman Funeral Homes Inc. stepped up. Along with their children, Holly and Reilly, the Workmans solicited food donations from friends and family members, prepared the food, and happily served full meals to whomever showed up. The Workmans have continued their service, and every year the number of attendees has grown. In 2019, they served 175 people via sitdown meals, takeout, and delivery. Greg and Dolly begin preparing the turkeys at 4 a.m. the day before Thanksgiving. A few volunteers help to peel potatoes and pick the meat from the turkey bones, but the Workmans do most of the cooking themselves. “I make 10 gallons of homemade gravy from scratch, Dolly commented. The Workmans prepare a

sumptuous repast, complete with 22 very large turkeys, 100 pounds of mashed potatoes, two bushels of sweet potatoes, peas, corn, fruit cocktail, and pies. Martin’s donates 30 dozen dinner rolls as well as 48 pounds of bread cubes, which Dolly makes into stuffing. The Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania, of which Dolly is a member, contributes to the meal too. The Workmans refuse to accept any monetary donations from diners. “ We want people to eat freely, Dolly explained. “Everybody needs to have a meal for Thanksgiving. Nobody is turned away. After a year filled with the isolation of a pandemic shutdown, the anxiety of a tumultuous economy, and the stress of a presidential election, the Workmans are especially committed to hosting a Thanksgiving dinner. “A nice meal just makes everybody feel good, Dolly remarked. With COVID-19 guidelines at the forefront, a socially distanced meal will be held at

The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. are housed. To top off the barn, BRHC board member Mike Landis crafted a weathervane from copper sheeting and tubing. It stands about 4 feet tall and is just over a yard wide. It can be viewed from River Road as well as by boaters and kayakers on the river. “Most farmsteads would use weathervanes to assist the farmer in predicting the weather. Typically, the tallest building such as a barn would host the weathervane,” Douts said. “We are uncertain if the Witmer barn ever had a weathervane, but Mike offered to make a one for us at no cost and erect it on the barn.” While Landis did not pattern his project after a specific historic weathervane, he noted that they would have been similar, with one specific difference. “They used a different type of solder with more lead,” Landis said. “And of course, they had a lot of tools that I don’t have.” Most weathervanes feature an image of an animal or other decoration. The BRHC device bears an American shad, which are once-plentiful migratory fish in the Susquehanna River. Shad were a significant food for the Susquehannock people

who lived in what later became Washington Boro, and they spawned a fishing industry that flourished - occasionally illegally - into the early 20th century. Landis combined a photograph of a shad with information from the Pennsylvania Fish & Game Commission to make a life-size model for the weathervane. He cut halves of the fish from copper sheeting and hammered each to create a scale-like texture. Landis soldered the halves together and then soldered on finshaped pieces of copper. Landis estimates that within a few seasons, a patina will begin to form on the copper. The new color will be appropriate, as the BRHC website describes American shad as having a “metallic blue-green back.” The BRHC plans to host an open house in June 2021 and the annual River Heritage Day in October 2021, as well as educational programs by Circle Legacy Center and Raven Ridge Wildlife Center. Four Good Men With Shovels It’s been nearly 175 years since they put him in the ground. His family and friends are gone. The last people to actually know him have been gone for more than a century. All we know is hearsay at best. All we know for sure is his name or part of it - and the dates of his arrival on and departure from Earth spelled out in hard-to-read, weathered letters on the broken piece of stone that marks his eternity. Who cares? We all should especially those who inhabit the same area that George Lieberknecht called home before his demise in 1846. Fortunately for Lieberknecht and others who lived around Canadochly Lutheran Church

in the 18th and 19th centuries, four current members of that church have spent a year as unofficial cemetery conservators. Jim Anspach of Columbia, Gene Smeltzer of Lower Windsor Township, Bill Dehoff of Windsor, and Bruce Herbst of East Prospect have been getting plenty of exercise but not much recognition as they work to restore the headstones in a small graveyard on the East Prospect Road next to the church’s event hall. The centuries have been hard on the stones, especially the marble ones eroded by years of rain that has slowly dissolved the letters carved on the surface. Trees have fallen, and branches have broken some stones, so these men do their best to piece them back together. Few stones are

plumb, so they dig holes to reset the stones and point them skyward. Most of the stones in the old section next to the event hall are from the 1800s, but some, the ones closer to the road, date to the 1700s. Some of these monuments stood near Canadochly Lutheran during our nation’s early years, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. They were here when canal boats traveled the creeks and rivers and when wagon trains carried families across the country to settle the West. At least four of the stones mark the resting places of Revolutionary War soldiers. Those markers were decorated with American flags and bronze medallions from the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

“We’ve reset more than 30 stones,” said Anspach, who has helped with similar cemetery restoration efforts at Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia. “The place looks better and better. We hope to get to the old slate markers in the spring.” George Lieberknecht’s headstone gives testimony to his German roots, as its epitaph is written in German: “Hier Ruhen Die Gebeine Von George Liebernecht. Geb 3 Feb 1766 Starbolen 12 Sept 1846.” Translation: “Here rest the bones of George Liebernecht, Born Feb. 3, 1799, Died Sept. 12, 1846.” Who would have imagined that four good men would restore that old marker in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Library Seeks Local Support The Columbia Public Library, 24 S. Sixth St., Columbia, is reaching out to the community for support. Like many other organizations, the library has faced challenges during the coronavirus pandemic. With annual expenses of $190,000 and only $53,700 coming from state, county, or municipal funding, the library needs the support of the community. Even with an annual income of $7,000 from library service fees, the library needs

assistance from its supporters to make up the difference. This year has been especially challenging since annual fundraisers had to be canceled and more rigorous disinfecting protocols and procedures have been implemented. There are many ways to support the library, including asking employers to support the library, arranging United Way payroll deductions, making memorial contributions, and donating online, by mail, and in person. bids to seven companies for a total of 210,000 trees, stakes, and shelters for 2021. RFPs for trees have been issued for single years since 2018, but contracting two years ahead to 2022 is unique for CBF. Four companies were awarded future contracts for a total of 500,000 trees for 2022. Those companies are Aquatic Resource Restoration Company in York County, Musser Forests in Indiana County, Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County, and American Native Plants in Baltimore County, Md. All four companies were also among the seven that received contracts for 2021. Funds provided through the contracts will help some of the companies expand their operations. CBF noted that the security of its forward contracting made the latest RFPs attractive to a conservative industry still affected by the housing crisis of 2008 when there was little need for nursery stock and services. The economic benefits of forward contracting also extend to contractors that will do the planting work and maintain the planting sites, said CBF’s Brenda Sieglitz, who manages the partnership. Sieglitz added that the new contracts will also increase the diversity of native trees for planting, as CBF has ordered a mix of species. As part of its efforts to plant a variety of trees, CBF responded to input from statewide organizations and is asking for trees that are hard to find. CBF launched the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership in 2018, focused on Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint goal of planting 95,000 acres of forested buffers by the end of 2025.

Amid COVID-19 restrictions, 84,000 of 95,000 trees distributed for spring planting in 2020 went into the ground. The remaining 11,000 trees are being kept in partner greenhouses and will grow into larger stock for future plantings. For fall plantings, about 47,000 trees were scheduled to be delivered in September to pickup points. Due to spring cancellations, the fall 2020 number of trees is more than double what was planted in the fall of 2019. Adding 10 million new trees alongside streams, streets, and other priority

landscapes in Pennsylvania’s portion of the bay watershed would accelerate the Keystone State as much as two-thirds toward the 95,000-acre target, according to CBF. Trees are among the most cost-effective tools for cleaning and protecting waterways by filtering and absorbing polluted runoff, stabilizing streambanks, and improving soil quality. Placed in parks, municipal properties, and other urban and suburban settings, trees absorb and clean stormwater, reduce flooding, and help restore abandoned mine land.

Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County received contracts to provide trees to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in 2021 and 2022.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has stepped up its efforts to ensure that it will be able to plant millions of trees in the coming years. The efforts also benefit local businesses and streamside buffers in Pennsylvania. CBF, which coordinates the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, is spending approximately $2.6 million for 710,000 trees, shelters, and stakes to supply plantings through 2022. Growers and related businesses in Pennsylvania and Maryland that provide trees, shrubs, and materials are guaranteed revenue through this forward contracting, and the partnership will receive the variety, quantity and quality of trees, shrubs, and materials it needs to continue its drive to plant 10 million trees in Pennsylvania by the end of 2025. Since 2018, cumulative efforts by CBF, the partnership and others across Pennsylvania have planted roughly more than 1.74 million trees. The partnership is made up of 147 national, regional, state, and local partners. CBF issued requests for proposals (RFP) and awarded

District Receives Reusable Bottles Susquehanna Heritage and the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) provided 500 water bottles to the Columbia Borough School District to be distributed to students. Columbia Borough School District started its Back-toSchool Supply Drive asking for reusable water bottles, because it had retrofitted all the water fountains to be water filling stations to reduce the chance of

spreading COVID-19. Susquehanna Heritage and LCSWMA encouraged reuse and recycling by choosing a 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottle, which helps support the entire recycling lifecycle. The bottles are made in the United States and come with a sip and pour lid with an easy carry handle. Additionally, the partners wanted the messaging to reflect how the Susquehanna River brings synergy to the com-

munity. The bottle design uses a word cluster of blue words flowing by a green shoreline. Additional bottles are available for purchase from Susquehanna Heritage at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. All proceeds from reusable water bottle sales support Columbia Crossing’s educational initiatives. For more information, readers may contact 717-252-0229 or info@susquehannaheritage.org.
