we are so thankful for our readers and the local businesses and organizations that help to make our communities thrive Shade Tree Society Will Launch Membership Drive BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Susquehanna Grace Community Church invites the public to travel the Road to Bethlehem at a drive-through Nativity on Saturday, Dec. 12.
If you’ve ever stopped to enjoy the trees that line the streets of Columbia, you have the Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission to thank. For the past 29 years, the Commission has planted approximately 900 trees in the community and has maintained street trees in the borough. The Columbia Tree Society, the fundraising auxiliary of the Commission, will begin its annual membership drive for 2021 on Tuesday, Dec. 1. The drive will end Sunday, Jan. 31, 2021.
More than 30 actors will portray 11 scenes about the birth of Jesus on Road to Bethlehem at Susquehanna Grace Community Church.
Travel On The Road To Bethlehem he story of the birth of Jesus will come to life from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, when Susquehanna Grace Community Church (SGCC), 6694 Sunrise Ave., Wrightsville, invites the public to travel on the Road to Bethlehem. The church has been presenting the drive-through Nativity for decades, said Nikki Sandman, a member of the church outreach team. “The young families of SGCC over 40 years ago wanted to have a Christmas event for their children and families of the community that celebrated the true meaning of
T
Christmas,” she explained. Visitors to Road to Bethlehem can expect a fun, family-friendly way to celebrate the Christmas holiday. “The Nativity includes 11 scenes with over 30 actors and live animals depicting the journey to Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus,” Sandman stated. “Actors are in full costume, and the live animals add an amazing feel to the night. The driveway is lined with luminarias, and visitors can listen in their cars to our radio station playing a variety of Christmas songs.” According to Sandman, the church continues to offer the event for one reason: Love. “(It’s about) our love for Jesus Christ,”
she stated, “and our love for the community.” The event is free, but food and monetary donations will be accepted for Hearts for Hunger, a food pantry serving Red Lion and surrounding areas. “Road to Bethlehem is an event that reminds families of the true meaning of Christmas,” Sandman said. “The live Nativity is a unique way to bring the Bible to life and captures the attention of all who drive through. This year, Road to Bethlehem gives families the opportunity to make Christmas memories without getting out of the car.” In past years, the event included some indoor activities, but that has
changed this year. “This year, in respect of public health and safety, we are hosting the live Nativity as a drive-throughonly event, with no indoor entertainment,” Sandman stated. “It’s still a great night to spend with your family. We encourage families to pack their car with good snacks, warm blankets and cameras. This is a night where the ‘no contact’ of the land can’t outshine the connection to the Lord Jesus.” For more information on the event, readers may visit SGCC’s Facebook page, www.facebook .com/contagiouschurch.sgcc or follow the church on Instagram at https://instagram.com /contagiouschurch_sgcc.

one, Kloidt said. “The certificate is presented to the family at the annual Arbor Day ceremony traditionally held on the last Friday in April,” he shared. This year’s membership drive is dedicated to the memory of Barry Ford, who was an active member of the Columbia community for years until his death in 2019. “Each year, we select an honorary chairman for our membership drive,” Kloidt said. “Mr. Ford was selected due to his dedication to the Columbia Boys Athletic Association, his close ties to
Columbia High School sports and for his service to the Columbia School District and Columbia Borough Council.” Kloidt emphasized that the Shade Tree Commission, along with the Columbia Park Rangers and other volunteers, works year-round to maintain the health and beauty of the trees by holding workdays throughout the year. For more information about the membership drive, readers may contact Amy Evans, Shade Tree Commission chairwoman, at 717-429-6780.

“Our goal is to renew 30 family/individual memberships and obtain 20 new members in this category,” said Bill Kloidt, past commissioner and membership drive chairman for the Columbia Tree Society. “On the business/civic organizational side, we hope to gather 10 renewals and add five new ones.” The more members the society gets, the better, he said, adding that the monetary goal for the membership drive is $1,000. Membership dues help the Commission purchase new trees for borough streets as well as in the five borough parks and other public spaces in Columbia. “Dues help fund the maintenance of all the trees in the shade tree jurisdiction with the application of mulch, fertilizer and pesticides;

She noted that her family eats their Thanksgiving dinner at the church, too, but they tend to wait until the evening. “We have fun (serving),” Dolly added. “(By the end of the day), we’re so tired, but it’s such a rewarding thing.” For pandemic-related safety reasons, meals will be delivered to Hershey Mill Home, Faith Friendship Villa, and the GateHouse homes in Mountville and Marietta. In previous years, residents of those facilities had attended the Thanksgiving dinners in person. Dining reservations are not required but are appreciated. The Workman family, including (from left) Greg, Dolly, Reilly, and (not pictured) Holly, cooked and served a community Thanksgiving dinner last year.

The meal must go on. Not wanting the Mountville area to lose its public Thanksgiving dinner when the original hosts retired 14 years ago, Greg and Dolly Workman of The Workman Funeral Homes Inc. stepped up. Along with their children, Holly and Reilly, the Workmans solicited food donations from friends and family members, prepared the food, and happily served full meals to whomever showed up. The Workmans have continued their service, and every year the number of attendees has grown. In 2019, they served 175 people via sitdown meals, takeout, and delivery. Greg and Dolly begin preparing the turkeys at 4 a.m. the day before Thanksgiving. A few volunteers help to peel potatoes and pick the meat from the turkey bones, but the Workmans do most of the cooking themselves. “I make 10 gallons of homemade gravy from scratch,”
Dolly commented. The Workmans prepare a sumptuous repast, complete with 22 very large turkeys, 100 pounds of mashed potatoes, two bushels of sweet potatoes, peas, corn, fruit cocktail, and pies. Martin’s donates 30 dozen dinner rolls as well as 48 pounds of bread cubes, which Dolly makes into stuffing. The Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania, of which Dolly is a member, contributes to the meal too. The Workmans refuse to accept any monetary donations from diners. “ We want people to eat freely,” Dolly explained. “Everybody needs to have a meal for Thanksgiving. Nobody is turned away.” After a year filled with the isolation of a pandemic shutdown, the anxiety of a tumultuous economy, and the stress of a presidential election, the Workmans are especially committed to hosting a Thanksgiving dinner. “A nice meal just makes everybody feel good,” Dolly

Goodman Chiropractic Opens In Ephrata
Goodman Chiropractic has opened at 3440 Rothsville Road, Ephrata, after a fire destroyed its previous New Holland location in 2019. After working with the founder of an upper cervical technique in Michigan for three years, chiropractor Dr. Steven Goodman moved to Lancaster in 1980. He developed the Goodman Method of Chiropractic, which focuses on the upper cervical spine. He notes that because the head and neck are vital to one’s balance, the specialized service focuses on getting to the root of debilitating pain, particularly chronic pain. Migraines and pain in the face, arms, back, and legs are treated at the atlas and C1 vertebra using an instrument Steven invented to tap under the skull and level the head

The Blue Rock Heritage Center (BRHC), 2251 River Road, Washington Boro, may have been closed this year, but behind-the-scenes has seen a flurry of activity. The organization officially changed its name from Washington Boro Society for Susquehanna River Heritage and launched the new www.bluerockheritage.org. The group also established the @BlueRockHeritage Facebook page. “The name change was also coupled with a new logo a circle of arrowheads - that showcases our local Native American history and roots, said BRHC president Charles Douts Jr. The logo was designed by local volunteer Jerry Musser, who also updated the website with new photos and information. Additionally, Musser created several short videos about the center and the Susquehanna River region; they can be viewed on Facebook and YouTube. BRHC appointed Debbie Saylor as curator, and she has been reorganizing exhibits and
adding new displays to the center, which is located at the former Wittmer/Witmer family farm. The barn, which was built in 1856, is in the midst of a renovation project that began in 2018. The plan for the barn is to use it for events and displays. It is located close to the family’s mill, where the current exhibits are housed. To top off the barn, BRHC board member Mike Landis crafted a weathervane from copper sheeting and tubing. It stands about 4 feet tall and is just over a yard wide. It can be viewed from River Road as well as by boaters and kayakers on the river. “Most farmsteads would use weathervanes to assist the farmer in predicting the weather. Typically, the tallest building such as a barn would host the weathervane, Douts said. “We are uncertain if the Witmer barn ever had a weathervane, but Mike offered to make a one for us at no cost and erect it on the barn. While Landis did not pattern his project after a specific historic weathervane, he noted that they would have been similar, with one specific

The BRHC device bears an American shad, which are once-plentiful migratory fish in the Susquehanna River. Shad were a significant food for the Susquehannock people who lived in what later became Washington Boro, and they spawned a fishing industry that flourished occasionally illegally - into the early 20th century. Landis combined a photograph of a shad with information from the Pennsylvania Fish & Game Commission to make a life-size model for the weathervane. He cut halves of the fish from copper sheeting and hammered each to create a scale-like texture. Landis soldered the halves together and then soldered on fin-shaped pieces of copper. Landis

For the Holiday Open House, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the grounds and mansion free of charge. “The Holiday Open House is a great event to simply

Although some changes will be in place this year, including limiting the number of guests allowed inside the buildings, the spirit of the events will remain intact.

allowing for COVID-19 safety measures such as socially distanced eating, private tables, and masked servers. Additionally, there will be a new feature this year, Tea to Go. It includes everything needed for supporters to host the tea in their home. Delivery can be arranged. Historic Wrightsville’s holiday tea will be held on Saturday, Dec. 12, with accommodations to ensure safety. The theme will be “‘Twas the Tea Before Christmas,” and seating times will be 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The event will return to the historic Wrightsville House, 127 and 129 Front St., after last year’s switch to John Wright Restaurant’s patio during repairs to the old house. The Donsco Corporation has again offered Historic Wrightsville use of the spacious rooms on the first floor,
Joyce Heiserman (left), events coordinator; Sharon Young (middle); and Lynn Shelton participated in Historic Wrightsville’s holiday tea in a previous year. The organization will host this year’s event on Saturday, Dec. 12.
St. Peter’s Bazaar St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 121 S. Second St., Columbia, invites the public to its annual Christmas bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 5, and Sunday, Dec. 6. The bazaar will be held after the 4:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday and after the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses on Sunday. While the event is typically held indoors in the Parish Center, this year it will be held in the church parking lot, said Claire Storm, bazaar chairwoman.
“ We will erect pop-up tents and separate them so folks can safely distance from each other,” Storm explained. “One tent will feature crafts, one will have themed baskets, one will have baked goods and (there will be) one with takeout turkey rice soup and turkey salad.” The event will be moved indoors in the case of inclement weather, she noted, but if that happens, there will be limits on the number of people allowed inside at one time. Due to COVID-19 and the Department of Health’s safety guidelines, the process for this year’s annual event will be different. The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. UPMC has partnered with LCPN to provide COVID-19 health screenings to volunteers. Families can preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341 from Friday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 11. Registration is required no later than Dec. 11. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to
registered participants on the morning of Dec. 19. The project anticipates distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this year’s partnership w i t h t h e U n i t e d Wa y o f Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Cone s t o g a Va l l e y C h r i s t i a n Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. For information about how to contribute, readers may visit www.lcpn.org.
