Columbia Borough School District is in need of winter coats of all sizes for boys and girls in grades five through 12. Those who have unused coats in good condition are encouraged to consider donating them. In 2017, the community helped students obtain winter coats; the response was so great at that time that the supply of donated coats has lasted until now. At the high school and middle school levels (grades five through 12), the district recently gave away its last coat. The district still has coats remaining for elementary-age students. To donate new or slightly used winter coats to the district, readers may contact superintendent Tom Strickler or drop them off at the district office, located at 200 N. Fifth St., Columbia. To arrange to have the items picked up, readers may call Strickler at 717-681-2616.

According to the Shade Tree Commission, shaded homes and tree-filled yards make urban life more pleasant and provide practical benefits such as lower heating and air-conditioning costs and increased resale values. The tree canopy is also a major contributor to storm water runoff reduction. This year, the society will be partnering with the Columbia Education Foundation (CEF) to dedicate this year’s membership drive to the memory of two Columbia benefactors: Dean Little and Clarissa Wolcott. Little was a United States Navy veteran, having enlisted at the age of 17 in 1943. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he worked for the American Oil Company and Consolidated Freightways. In 1964, he opened Little’s Beverage Distributor in Columbia. He retired in 1982 and moved to Brogue in York County, before later moving to St. John’s Herr Estate in Columbia in 2009. He was an active member of numerous local veterans and social organizations. Little passed away in 2016. Wolcott was a 1953 graduate of Columbia High School and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Millersville State Teacher’s College. She taught in the School District of Lancaster for 35 years. She was a member of the former Cookman Methodist Church, as

well as Columbia United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Columbia Public Library Board, Columbia Tree Society, Columbia Historic Preservation Society, and the Witness Tree Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. She taught Sunday school for 52 years. Wolcott passed away in June 2019. Memberships are available in the following categories: student, individual, family, business, and lifetime. Interested individuals may also purchase a Memorial Certificate in honor of a deceased loved one. A Memorial Certificate will be presented to the donor in their deceased loved one’s name at the annual Arbor Day observance to be held on Friday, April 24, 2020, in the Locust Street Park in Columbia. A copy of the Shade Tree’s annual report to council is available upon request. Members of the Columbia Shade Tree Commission are chairperson Amy Evans, secretary Shawn Shuffelbottom, treasurer Amanda Hawn, and Jack Gamby. The Shade Tree Commission partners with the Columbia Park Rangers in maintaining street trees and park trees. To purchase a membership or participate in maintaining local trees, interested individuals may contact a member of the Shade Tree Commission or call the Columbia Borough office at 717-684-2467.

The Train Guys Prepare Holiday Exhibit By Chelsea Peifer

The Train Guys are back at work setting up an elaborate, interactive miniature train display for the public in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. The group of approximately 20 volunteers began construction in mid-October for the final product to make its public debut from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3. “ We think for a temporary Christmas display that this is the biggest on the East Coast,” said Train Guy Craig Coble. O-gauge trains run through detailed

towns decorated for the holidays, and G-scale and standard-gauge trains and accessories are also featured. The interactive elements of the display, which has upwards of 50 push buttons, are one of the things that Coble said visitors tend to most appreciate. Several new push button accessories have been added for 2019, as well as new track loops, a third level of track, a police station, a flying saucer abducting a cow, and enhancements to the perennially popular circus setup. “Last year was our best year ever. We had well over 4,600 visitors, and we’re hoping for even more this year,” Coble stated. Costumed greeters - such as a railroad police officer and an engineer - track attendance and

interact with guests at the event. Historical Elizabethtown buildings are part of the setup, such as a miniature version of the Klein Chocolate Company stadium, which was built in Elizabethtown in 1919. “Most of the volunteers have a lot of history knowledge, whether it’s about real railroads, toy trains, or Elizabethtown itself,” noted Coble. “And all of those pieces of history link to so many others.” Volunteer John Gantz worked for Amtrak for 33 and a half years and has been part of The Train Guys for seven years. “It’s all about the kids,” said Gantz. “It’s good for me to be with a good group of guys here and just seeing the kids enjoy it all every year.” Aidan Mollohan, 17, said that this is his sixth year helping The Train Guys. He plans to pursue a career as a mechanical engineer and has been able to glean wisdom from engineers among the crew. “It’s also helped me to learn a lot about carpentry and wiring. A number of our members are electricians,” Aidan commented. Retired industrial arts teacher Ken Stehman has enjoyed working with The Train Guys since he was recruited by Coble seven years ago. “I just enjoy tinkering with things and the problem solving that’s involved,” said Stehman. “We always end up with new challenges, because it’s never the same layout.” The 2019 display will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays

How Small Businesses Give Back

Forry’s Country Store

Information from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs says that small businesses, or firms with fewer than 500 workers, accounted for 99.7% of businesses in 2016, the most recent year for data. Firms with fewer than 100 workers accounted for 98.2% of companies. Thanks to their influence and reach, small businesses have the potential to impact local communities in numerous ways. Small businesses employ local residents. According to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, small businesses accounted for 61.8% of net new jobs in the United States between 1993 and 2016. Small businesses are innovative. The SBA notes that small businesses represent about 96% of employer firms in high-patenting manufacturing industries. That suggests that small businesses are full of new ideas.

The Lancaster Barnstormers front office has been lauded by the Atlantic League, winning two awards for the 2019 season, it was announced recently by league president Rick White. Lancaster garnered the league’s Community Service Award for the franchise that has done the greatest work aiding those in need in its particular market. In addition, the Barnstormers’ general manager, Mike Reynolds, won the Joe Klein Executive of the Year honor for his work in growing the Barnstormers’ brand and attendance during his three seasons at the front office helm.

The Barnstormers’ organization was feted for several community outreaches. One in particular was the Christmas Tree Lane presented by the BCF Group and the Christmas Spirit Light Show that was pioneered at Clipper Magazine Stadium during the 2018 holiday season, generating over $29,000 for local charities. Also factored into the honor were Thanksgiving and Christmas programs centered at Clipper Magazine Stadium that feed the hungry through the holiday season. Lancaster is also the site of a Camp Out for Homelessness event in conjunction with Tabor Community Services.

Lancaster, in its 15th season in the Atlantic League, was also applauded by the league for the creation of the Little Sluggers’ Dugout, a private room for nursing mothers, sponsored by May-Grant Obstetrics and Gynecology. Mental health awareness also came to the forefront in May in a partnership with the Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital. Cylo also kept a busy schedule during the 2018-19 campaign, making 587 appearances outside of the confines of the stadium. Reynolds has dramatically increased

WBUMC Slates Holiday Activities By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The members of Washington Boro United Methodist Church (WBUMC), 1964 Water St., Washington Boro, invite the community to attend several upcoming events. A baked potato bar meal will be served free of charge at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30. The menu will include baked potatoes and an assortment of toppings: sour cream, broccoli, grated cheese, cheese sauce, chili, salsa, bacon, chives, and butter. Desserts will be offered as well. The meal has traditionally been held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving as part of an Advent festival, said Mission and Nurture Committee co-chair Tabetha Young. “We used to do a covered dish thing, but we got tired of turkey,” she added. Typically, two services are offered on Sunday mornings, with a modified service at 8:15 a.m. and a blended service at 10:30 a.m. However, only the later service is offered in December. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m. and currently serve individuals from age 6 to 92. During the worship service on Sunday, Dec. 1, Juniata County resident Jeremy Goodling will give a concert of Christmas and gospel music. WBUMC pastor Carlene Wolf will give a short message. A soup and sandwich meal will follow

the service. A children’s program highlighting a possible meaning of the “12 Days of Christmas” will be featured at the service on Sunday, Dec. 8. A Christmas Eve service containing music, Scripture reading, and candlelight singing will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24. Additionally, the Mission and Nurture Committee will host a Christmas bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eleven vendors are slated to participate, offering a mix of handcrafted and direct sales items. The church kitchen will sell egg sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, beef barbecue, and both cups and quarts of chicken corn soup, tomato soup, and beef vegetable soup. There will also be a baked goods table. The proceeds from the bazaar will be used to support local and foreign missions, Wolf said. In previous years, beneficiaries have included the Columbia Ministerium, Africa Inland Mission, Love146, Global Ministries’ Family Village Farm in India, North Star Initiative, LUMINA, and Water Street Mission. For more information about WBUMC events, readers may contact Wolf at 717-989-5979 or pastorwashingtonboroumc@ comcast.net.

ception on Dec. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, and holds regular gallery hours on weekdays. Whatmore, a native of Lancaster County, has always had a love for the arts, which she inherited from her father, whose intricate works still hang in her family’s home. Following graduation, Whatmore pursued a career in business. However, while she was working with her own three children during their school years, she found herself drawn back to the arts. The inspiration for the “Through the Door” collection is the Christmas season. Whatmore enjoyed depicting Saint Nicholas in different eras and incorporating artists of that same time period in the scene. The pug (left photo) and the lion (right photo) are just two of the charcoal animal portraits that will be featured in the exhibit “Scott Higgins: It’s In Their Eyes.” The exhibit will open on Dec. 6 at the Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster.

a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Higgins created the works with charcoal, each piece taking approximately 12 to 15 hours to create. The drawings look very realistic, but upon closer inspection viewers can see the artistic marks. Higgins is a York-based artist who grew up in Lancaster and has been an artist practically his entire life. He said that he finds daily inspiration in his pets and how they make him feel. Knowing the special bond people have with the pets in their lives makes him feel honored

& Son Inc. in the HVAC Over $5 Million category. The project consisted of a sixstory overbuild and expansion of Lancaster General Hospital’s existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Building vertically on a tight, landlocked site created several challenges. Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the building rose. James Craft & Son Inc. was hired to perform the mechanical piping and HVAC for the vertical expansion and received many deliveries at its own warehouse to transport to the jobsite. Working in an occupied facility next to highly sensitive areas and minimizing the disruption to the hospital staff’s ability to treat patients was the highest priority. This year, the Project of the Year Award finalists also included CCS Building Group, Willow Street - Willow Valley Chapel Relocation, Lancaster (Category: Miscellaneous/Special Projects); Keystruct Construction Inc., York - Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Elevator Addition, Hummelstown (Category: Institutional Under $2 Million); Kinsley Construction Inc., York - York Traditions Bank Tenant Fit-out, York (Category: Commercial Under $2 Million); Mowery PSL, Mechanicsburg - Westminster Place II at Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg (Category: Residential New Multi-Unit); Wohlsen Construction Company, Lancaster - CityGate Medical Office Building and Corporate Center, Lancaster (Category: Commercial $10-$25 Million); and Wohlsen Construction Company, Lancaster - Amtrak Harrisburg Station - Baggage Bridge Removal, Harrisburg (Category: Miscellaneous/Special Projects). The gala was attended by more than 350 contractors, project owners, design professionals, and guests, including Sen. Ryan Aument, who presented the chapter with a 60th anniversary resolution. This year’s program featured 82 entries, judged using specific criteria regarding the quality of construction and workmanship by a panel of construction design professionals. The Excellence Award, the top honor, was given to the highest scoring project in each category, providing it earned at least 90 points. The Merit Award, second place, was given to all other projects within each category that scored 80 or more points. The Excellence Award winners at the Keystone Chapter level are now eligible to enter at the national level and compete against the best in the industry from all 69 ABC chapters nationwide. A list of all of the Excellence Award and Merit Award winners is available at https://abckeystone.org/abc-key stone-awards-top-contractors-for -excellence-in-construction-at -2019-eic-gala/.
